May I use the Xerox machine?&#8221;<br>&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Version 2 (request with a real reason):<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;Excuse me, I have 5 pages. May I use the xerox machine, because I&#8217;m in a rush?&#8221;<br>&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Version 3 (request with a fake reason):<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;Excuse me, I have 5 pages. May I use the xerox machine, because I have to make copies?&#8221;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a stab at what you think happened because I&nbsp;think you&#8217;ll be blown away.&nbsp;Here&#8217;s how it shook out:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Persuasion-Words_because.jpeg\" alt=\"Persuasion Words_because\" class=\"wp-image-10814\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Persuasion-Words_because.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Persuasion-Words_because-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Persuasion-Words_because-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>In Version 1 (request only),<\/strong>&nbsp;60 percent of people let the researcher skip the line.<br>&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>In Version 2 (request with a real reason),<\/strong>&nbsp;94 percent of people let the researcher skip the line.<br>&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>In Version 3 (request with a lame reason),<\/strong>&nbsp;93 percent of people let the researcher skip the line!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What this tells us is that people &#8211;\u00a0<em>over 9 out of 10 times<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0will agree to your request as long as you provide a reason&#8230; no matter what that reason is.\u00a0So the takeaway, therefore, isn&#8217;t in finding a great reason for your requests to clients, employers, or anybody you may need something from in your everyday life&#8230;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The real takeaway is the power of the word\u00a0<em>because<\/em>. The trigger in the mind of the\u00a0other person is the word\u00a0<em>becaus<\/em>e regardless of what follows.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0I read about this study in a phenomenal book called\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2DAQNdI\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Influence: The Psychology Of Persuasion<\/em><\/a>, by Robert Cialdini.
