MERLIN’S SONG<\/strong><\/p>\n

Or Merlin wise I learned a song,\u2014
\nSing it low or sing it loud,
\nIt is mightier than the strong,
\nAnd punishes the proud.
\nI sing it to the surging crowd,\u2014
\nGood men it will calm and cheer,
\nBad men it will chain and cage\u2014
\nIn the heart of the music peals a strain
\nWhich only angels hear;
\nWhether it waken joy or rage
\nHushed myriads hark in vain,
\nYet they who hear it shed their age,
\nAnd take their youth again.<\/p>\n

Hear what British Merlin sung,
\nOf keenest eye and truest tongue.
\nSay not, the chiefs who first arrive
\nUsurp the seats for which all strive;
\nThe forefathers this land who found
\nFailed to plant the vantage-ground;
\nEver from one who comes to-morrow
\nMen wait their good and truth to borrow.
\nBut wilt thou measure all thy road,
\nSee thou lift the lightest load.
\nWho has little, to him who has less, can spare,
\nAnd thou, Cyndyllan’s son! beware
\nPonderous gold and stuffs to bear,
\nTo falter ere thou thy task fulfil,\u2014
\nOnly the light-armed climb the hill.
\nThe richest of all lords is Use,
\nAnd ruddy Health the loftiest Muse.
\nLive in the sunshine, swim the sea,
\nDrink the wild air’s salubrity:
\nWhen the star Canope shines in May,
\nShepherds are thankful and nations gay.
\nThe music that can deepest reach,
\nAnd cure all ill, is cordial speech:
\nMask thy wisdom with delight,
\nToy with the bow, yet hit the white.
