The first hot chocolate beverage is believed to have been created 2,500-3,000 years ago by the Mayan people. By 1400 AD this beverage was an essential part of Aztec culture and referred to as xoc\u014dl\u0101tl.<\/p>\n

This ancient version of hot chocolate was NOT what you\u2019d order at a Starbucks today.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all, it was served cold and it was not sweetened (sugar had yet to come to the Americas). The drink was prepared with ground cocoa seeds mixed with water, cornmeal, chili peppers and other ingredients.<\/p>\n

Thankfully it evolved over time and, once sugar and heat got involved, it really caught on in popularity, spreading throughout the world. \ud83d\ude0b<\/p>\n
