<\/h2>\n<\/h2>\nThere is an art to travel packing that takes some time to perfect. \u00a0We all have those things we actually CAN’T\u00a0live without when away from home… but chances are the items on this list are\u00a0not one of them.\ud83d\ude48<\/p>\n
So, consider the length and purpose of your trip and keep the following in mind for what NOT to pack.<\/p>\n
1. Anything irreplaceable\u00a0<\/strong> Especially with the fancy jewelry… it may look nice, but guess what? \u00a0Thieves think it looks nice too and you may have just became a mark. \u00a0Save yourself heartache and leave the expensive or meaningful stuff safely at home.<\/p>\n 2. Full bottles of anything<\/em><\/strong> 3. “Just in case” items<\/strong> 4. Your bookshelf<\/strong> Instead, invest in an e-reader, subscribe to a magazine’s digital edition or check out the second-hand bookstores once you arrive, (and donate it before you leave). \u00a0If you are a physical-book-ONLY type person, then just one or two paperbacks, depending on how long you’re gone for.<\/p>\n 5. “Useful mementos”<\/strong> So you get the concept, we’re talking about things like hats, coolers, toothpaste, snacks, etc.. Grabbing stuff like this once you arrive is a great excuse to check out a corner shop or grocery store for some regional fun-ness. \ud83d\ude0a<\/p>\n 6. Umbrellas Most hotels, hostels or private rental properties will have umbrellas for you to use free of charge. \u00a0Or find a cheap one while your there.<\/p>\n 7. Too many clothes<\/strong> Don\u2019t pack 5 of your bulkiest sweaters. \u00a0The lightest packing travelers focus on versatility and color coordination that make a few key pieces all they need.<\/p>\n Another pro tip: Pack only 1 pair of jeans and make sure your tops\u00a0can be worn with all your bottoms.<\/p>\n 8. Shoes,\u00a0shoes, shoes<\/strong> You ideally want TWO\u00a0pairs max\u00a0(INCLUDING the one you’re wearing) and they should work for every occasion you need. \u00a0Make sure you wear the bulkiest pair on travel day. \u00a0Bonus points if you only bring the pair you wear!<\/p>\n 9. Keys!<\/strong> So unless you’re a school janitor, pack only your\u00a0crucial keys… and walk a little lighter.<\/p>\n 10. \nThis means expensive jewelry, family heirlooms, and sentimental objects… anything that would suck really bad\u00a0if you were to lose it.<\/p>\n
\nAnd depending on where you’re going consider skipping even partially full bottles all together. \u00a0This obviously counts for anything hotels typically provide. \u00a0Unless you are on a seriously remote adventure you can pick up toiletries on location.<\/p>\n
\nYou know the ones… \u00a0they begin with the words \u2018Maybe I\u2019ll throw that in just in case\u2026\u2019 \u00a0These include workout clothes, that third pair of shoes, and an outfit you\u2019ll only wear once.<\/p>\n
\nNothing will weigh you down more than hardcover books, travel guides and stacks of magazines. \u00a0Don\u2019t do it!<\/p>\n
\nThink of things you need for this type of trip and instead of bringing, buy the local version. \u00a0It’s an awesome way to really immerse yourself in your destination and live like a local.<\/p>\n
\n<\/strong>This can almost fall under the \u2018Just In Case\u2019 items, but it deserves a special mention. \u00a0Even the most compact umbrellas really are not necessary to pack.<\/p>\n
\nThis one is so easy in theory, but so hard in practice for some of us (cough \ud83d\ude09). \u00a0Choose wisely!<\/p>\n
\nThey get their own point because they can majorly sabotage your light-packing efforts, for the gals\u00a0AND the guys. \u00a0Resist the urge to stuff running shoes, dress shoes\/heels, sandals and hiking boots in your bag.<\/p>\n
\nThis is a small thing – but it makes a difference if you’re like me and they weigh 5 pounds between the sheer amount of metal and keychains you\u2019ve attached to them. \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n
\nTechnology is great… what\u2019s not great, however, is loading up your precious packing space with your tablet AND laptop AND smartphone AND etc., etc.. \u00a0Take inventory of your technology and pair it down to as little as possible.<\/p>\n
