Or does it happen sometimes? Feeling a longing for home while traveling is more common than you think. Did you know there are things you can do to feel less homesick as you travel? You can simply scroll through some photos and think of happy moments with the people you love! <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pack sentimental items.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/personal-item.jpeg\" alt=\"personal item\" class=\"wp-image-6804\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/personal-item.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/personal-item-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/personal-item-300x300.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Sentimental items can help when feeling homesick because they remind us of our homes, loved ones, and memories we hold dear to us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>However be careful when <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"packing (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/pack-this-the-travel-packing-list-app-that-doesnt-suck\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>packing<\/strong><\/a><strong> these special items! If you are flying on a plane, then I\u2019d say pack them in your carry-on or purse. Do not put them in your suitcase or a checked bag in the event that something happens to it. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s better to lose clothing and shoes than your favorite keychain or hat from a family member. These little reminders will remind you that you\u2019re never really too far away from home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Remember pack sentimental. Not valuable. We suggest leaving your grandmother\u2019s heirloom rings or jewelry at home. It\u2019s a new place, of course, it\u2019s going to feel weird and different at times! <\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>To counteract the feeling of culture shock, <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"research your destination (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/how-to-pick-your-next-travel-destination-new-for-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>research your destination<\/strong><\/a><strong> before you arrive. Study their culture, how they get from certain places, their ways of etiquette, and other parts of their culture.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>By feeling like you fit in a little more, you\u2019ll begin to feel similar to the way you feel at home &#8211; natural and comfortable. Ultimately, eliminate the feeling of being a tourist and you\u2019ll feel like a local. <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stick to a routine as often as possible.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/routine.jpeg\" alt=\"routine\" class=\"wp-image-6807\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/routine.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/routine-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/routine-300x300.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>As mentioned earlier, oftentimes feeling homesick stems from a lack of routine. When you arrive at your destination, try your best to stick to a schedule. Keep your morning and evening routines, if you have them, as close to the routines you follow at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>For instance, if you wash your face, read a book, and then brush your teeth and go to sleep &#8211; do just that! Utilize your space around you, if there\u2019s a common area where you can meditate or do some light stretching before bed, do that too.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Creating a routine on your trip will help to establish a sense of normalcy in your mind and body, thus eliminating stress or \u201cshock.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If you can, call or Facetime with a family member or close friend.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/phone-home.jpeg\" alt=\"phone home\" class=\"wp-image-6805\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/phone-home.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/phone-home-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.journohq.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/phone-home-300x300.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Curing homesickness can be as easy as getting on the phone with a family member or close friend. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not suggesting text messages or Facebook messages, but if that\u2019s what you can do &#8211; then so be it. However, the effect that a family member or friend\u2019s voice has on oneself truly is irreplaceable! That\u2019s what makes humans so great! So consider this the next time you are really missing home. Just hearing a friendly, familiar voice can really change the way you are feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>Explain that you are homesick if you\u2019re comfortable with it. Then change the subject and discuss either what you\u2019ve been up to or how the traveling has been, or what your family member or friend has been up to. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>For instance, catching up with an old friend and gossiping, talking about sports, shows, etc.&nbsp; like you would at home might be just what you need! Take your time, don\u2019t rush. Book or find more interactive experiences in your destination. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>For instance, consider taking a cooking class in Barcelona or a dance lesson in Paris.
