Slept the whole time.
Last Del Mar beach walk for \240a while. Portuguese man I war. \240My neighbor Kim says these are harmless. Good thing as I was barefoot and stepped on one. \240Not dead yet.

Arrived in San Diego our favorite driver Ali drove us home. \240I mean back to our old home

Max blew me a kiss. \240❤️. \240With Trangs encouragement. \240Poor little guy was sick.

Kim was in Palm \240Springs and told me to pick sd much lavender as I wanted. I saved some for \240the bees. \240I’m the bee photographer. \240🐝

If you are going anywhere north, the trick is to get through LA at night during the week. Or just stay in LA.

8:30 \240pm traffic vs

2-6:30 traffic or pretty much all the time

Light traffic in LA. \240Just like Atlanta. 5 is equal to 75.
Can you guess what the lecture is about just by seeing what’s on the screen?

I guessed Literature? Katie guessed English. Paolo said it’s AI they are predicting the next word. \240🤔😳

Coffee Alba. No Red Bull for breakfast. Lol

May Day protests in LA

Chilaquiles or breakfast burrito? \240

Chilaquiles verde. \240The hot sauce helped clear Marc’s sinuses

This is Gabby the owner and chef. \240Just opened a second location. \240Great breakfast and lunch.el Tarasco Mexican Grill. It’s an office building and a little hard to fine the entrance but glad we did.
Big fight over water rights in the breadbasket of the US. \240Scores of dead fruit trees is evidence. \240Despite the record rain not enough is funneled to farmland. \240

50% of Americas vegetables come from California

One side of the highway is green orange groves🍊

Then a field of dead trees. 🥲

New development called for Tracy outside Livermore. An hour from San Francisco.

This Cattle farm was huge. \240At least 100 acres. Thousands of cattle need water to graze the fields.

The farmers won. More stormwater to save up for draught years
Why California is called the Golden State. Fields of golden grasses. \240

Our Berkeley tour guides for \240the day, Katie and Paolo. Katie is studying nuclear engineering and Palo civil engineering. \240Their freshman year. I told them if they didn’t finish school they could always be a tour guide and pizza delivery. \240🤔

Non alcoholic drinks except for my old fashion. \240Katie is leaving tonight to tour a nuclear facility in San Louis Obismo. \240Paolo said he had to go study. \240Guess they didn’t like the tour guide and pizza delivery idea.

The campanile you can see from everywhere. No it’s not leaning. I think I am

The belltower or as they say the campanile is Largest bell tower in the US is right here in Berkeley. \240If there’s an earthquake it’s so long it so tall it would hit the bay.

The Morris room private library. \240In fact there’s no less than 20 libraries on campus. \240A spot for everyone.

There are at least 23 bears statues on the Berkeley campus. \240There’s on in this picture can you spot it?

🎓 2025 graduates

Net a new friend at the bar at the Berkeley \240city club. Karen is a member and was having a glass of wine before playing bridge. She went to UCSD in San Diego. Would love to have heard more of her story.

Second most popular transportation is mopeds

Business school

Old side of campus architecture

Berkeley has 3 different bus systems.

It’s hilly

New construction everywhere
Did I step back in time? \240Thornburg Village was the idea of a 25 year old California developer and builder Jack Wood Thornburg who planned a village to look like old Europe. \240The architect William Raymond Yelland had spent time in a village during WWI. It’s been continuously occupied in since it was built in 1927. \240

Chichi San Chen. \240So automated I couldn’t figure out how to pay.

This is how you carry tea

Is age a 12 year old student at Berkeley? \240

The whole San Francisco Bsy

Maybe not for the cars encountering the bikes
Dinner at Agrodolce in Berkeley with two new friends. Kathleen and Tommy. Tommy is our friend Roses cousin. They live in Oakland. So interesting, we could talk with them forever. Great dinner and even better conversation.

They gave us the best tips on retiring…. Enjoy the process and slow down. I need to remember that.

We’ve been looking for redwoods all day is that one by the car? \240
Dinner a Za’s on the lake and hear some yelling. Guessing it’s a dare. Who else would jump in the freezing lake at 45 degrees and rain.

Marc’s car 😱. Looking for white car culprit.

Might have found them. Cameras in parking lot. Police report filed. Now on to next stop.

Drive to Lake Tahoe. From flat to 7,450 ft above sea level in 4 hours. \240

Lighting or something killed a bunch of trees

Marc ran off to the bathroom

There’s a beach at a state park. Not sure I would go swimming.

Paddle Boarding at 50 degrees in the rain. Why?

Still snow on the ground.

Drive back to the north side shows how the San Francisco money has come to the lake and built huge million dollar “cabins”

Headed to Mt Shasta. May the 4th be with you. 😂

Evidence of a forest fire.

Wide open plains

Back up the mountain

Looks like salt flats

There she is.

Getting closer

Little towns along the way. \240When Marc goes in and says. No stay in the car you know it’s not good for lunch

We made it to Weed, California. \240Funny it’s actually named after a lumber guy who’s last name was Weed

Big fire.

Back to marsh. \240Wonder if they’ve thought of growing rice?
We made it to Oregon. \240Klamath Falls. \240Stayed in the lake and found a great Chinese restaurant. Family owned and operated for 40 years. \240

Genuine Chicked? \240What’s a broaster? \240

This was an old railroad stop for the pacific line.

Stayed at the new Fairfield Inn. Looks like they are planning to make this a big water park area with other commercial buildings. \240We should come back in 20 years and see what they’ve built.

Nice quiet evening to a long driving day. \2406 hours of driving and my rear hurts. Needed the walk.
Breakfast at Rosie’s. \240One one waitress and she was running. \240

🥲Heading out of town.

Photo bombing my pic

Stopped at the turn for Squaw Valley and the Olympic flame. 🔥 yes it’s still lit since 1960.

Had to stop for cherries. 🍒

Weird cherry.
Can’t say enough good things about our vist to Bend and our stay with Gary. \240Thanks Chris for introducing us. \240 He has a great place and the best stories. We talked about everything and loved Gary’s music night!

Thanks Gary for the awesome B&B and great conversations. \240

View of Bend from Gary’s back porch.

Drive into town. \240The town of Bend got its name from a bend in the Deschutes River. \240Originally named Farewell Bend but the post office said it was too long. 😂

Lots of new modern homes along the river.

Nice homes around the old mill area. Very family oriented town with bike paths and outdoor activities \240Gary says lots of families moving in from California. \240I can see why. I could live here.

New townhomes being built

Some homes where redesigned to match the Bend style

The REI power plant. \240Repurposed from an old lumber pulp plant

Gary took us to Greg’s great place on the river.

Couldn’t decide if the rocks came first or the restaurant.

Greg’s is one if Gary’s favorites. \240Sorry no pics of our plates. \240

I don’t know if this pic shows the Kyakers going by. But they were out
Marc and Gary’s car wash. I can’t count how many bugs were killed along the way but needless to say a lot of remains were in the grill, windows and pretty much all over.

Morning Conversation over French press coffee. Did I say great B&B?

Then to Jackson’s for another cup and breakfast

Exceptional service. \240Yes we will have the Gary’s special. \240Salad with eggs and crispy bacon. ? To my surprise it went together well and sorry no picture as I quickly ate it all.

Over the window

Both sides 😮

Yeah we found a place to go to the bathroom. They dug out a restroom

Snowdrift. Taller than me so 7 ft?

What is that poll doing there? Marc says to mark the side of the road for the snowplows. \240It’s 8 ft tall. \240

Wait for me.

One last picture

Bye bye snow covered buildings.
Arrived in Portland. \240Staying at Hotel Bensen off Broadway new Powells. \240Walked to lunch at a Thai Peacock. Then to the Lan Su Chinese garden. The Japanese garden was closed but this was a little gem in Chinatown we would have overlooked. Glad we didn’t. Had green tea by the koi pond under a willow tree. Perfect.

From our room

Very walkable if you don’t mind the homeless sleeping in the park or on the sidewalks. Or walking around talking to themselves. \240It didn’t seem like anyone else noticed.

Cute little Thai Peacock restaurant

More than I could eat.

Marc said no thanks to some of my salad. He’s not a salad guy.

This path seemed clear.

We’ve arrived in Chinatown

Locked gates before you pay says something about the neighborhood.

Marc loved the designed stone paths. Maybe at our house 🤔

In the middle of the city a quiet little oasis. \240

Dragon green tea. \240Marc said it looked like….well I won’t repeat it. I’m having tea.

Managed to escape Powell’s ( the worlds largest bookstore) with only 4 books. But tomorrows another day and it’s just down the street from the hotel. \240

Dinner at Departure. \240Great rooftop restaurant designed to look like you were flying out ie departure lol. Gret views including one of \240Mt Hood but the lady thought I was taking a picture of her so I stopped trying to get a good shot. Marc liked his tuna poke sushi and I liked the saki. \240🤪

Start off the day with Breakfast at The Benson. Every President has stayed here.

Portland’s famous Japanese Gardens. We were fortunate to have a great tour guide who walked us through the history, Dr Tono who was the architect and the sights, sounds \240and meanings of each element.

Over 100 volunteers work on pruning and of course sweeping the moss

This bird was having a zen moment

Marc wants to go but I’m still finding and still taking pics.

Ready to go in another trail

Ok I’m game.

Rose or Camilla ?
One more hike of the day. To the redwoods in the Hoyt Abororetum further up the hill. We are on the opposite side of downtown on what is called Arlington Heights. Land of \240gorgeous homes and parks.

I’m starving so we drive down to find something to eat….pizza fit the bill but finding Gluten Free Pizza? \240No problem in Portland.

Wait is that my favorite gluten free bakery? The one in Redondo Beach….yes it is 😊👍

This is my little slice of heaven and the days not over yet.

Cute I could live in a studio

Ah we’ve arrived at our massage appointment. \240

My new favorite massage therapist. Oleander a mix of stretching, acupuncture, massage and Treager. We did a couples massage and Marc’s therapist was just as effective at getting all the kinks out. \240Marc said we will need one a week. Ok yes sign me up.
Marc’s still coughing so we spent about 3 hours waiting at urgent care. \240Good news not bronchitis or pneumonia but some type of lung bacteria originating from allergies so an antibiotic and Flonase. \240

Need to eat with the meds so cold pizza works
Now to the hotel and check out downtown

You can see the Astoria column yes that’s what it’s called. Built as a tribute to the people that settled the West coast in 1927 by the Great Northern Railroad as the end of the Oregon Trail

Do you recognize this house? \240Did you watch the Goonies? \240

This twisted metal resused as a bike rack

The pier that used to be

Bowline Hotel on the water. Nice Scandinavian industrial design. \240

Made it to Astoria. \240Just what I remembered. Ships and ships and views. The town is walkable but as Marc found with all the one ways, walking is better than driving. First stop lunch at the Astoria brewing company. \240Not as good as Diego fish tacos but a nice place for beer. \240

Checking out the sea lions at the pier and next the cannery museum. \240Marc said be prepared for the smell but it didn’t smell it was closed a long long time ago. \240Bumblebee Tuna got its start here.

If he can do it we can

Grifting my teeth as we drive over the planks.

Salmon used to be average this size or larger. \240Until the damn stopped all the salmon from spawning and wiped out the population.

Hokie Bird was caught and tied up for a while.

Help me!!

Yes that’s my man.

Stop at the local brewery. Music and beer but only one waitstaff so we left. There used to be 7 breweries but Covid has taken a hit on Astoria. \240

In line at the ferry and wait. We didn’t make it? \240Nope that was to Vashon. Glad we have the Ferry expert with us. \240She does this several times a month

Let’s go for a walk in the woods. \240What tree is that? What plant is that? \240Andy either knows everything or he’s making it up. Either way it was a great walk and I learned a lot. \240

The lighthouse is on a spit. This is a new word for me. \240It is a piece of land formed from the sediment of a \240river flowing into another body of water. \240

Glowing madrona \240trees

Great dinner Salmon and pesto yum

Helen DeLaVergne Ridder she says Marc looks more like a Lacy on his mothers side I see the DeLaVergne side.

Found a seat in the front.

Tried to figure out what this ship \240was carrying

HB having fun on the bow

Me having fun on the bow
