Ready to go

Car is very full we may not need all this stuff. But I don’t want to get out there and wish we had it. If we are not comfortable we will end up hating camping and never going.

Learnings:

  • The Yeti 45 is too small for us. Or we are being way too much food. We will need to get another cheap cooler for drinks and a few random food items that did fit. I also think I don’t have enough ice or frozen stuff in it so we will have to keep and eye on it
  • We filled the car to the brim and had to work to keep room for Lyle.

Beloit Travel Wisconsin Welcome Center

Into Wisconsin.

There is not much to say about Wisconsin really. A state of cheese. \240Not my thing.

3
Ehlenbach's Cheese Chalet Inc

Like I said. A state of cheese.

Disgusting. A state recognized for their skills in letting milk go bad and letting mold and bacteria grow.

As we were driving away I noticed the cow statue had way to realistic veins sculpted into its utter. Why would someone do that? \240It was a little disturbing.

Courtyard by Marriott Sioux Falls

It’s been since March 13th since i spent a night in a hotel. Somehow i still show as 64 nights in a Marriott this year.

I miss traveling.

8
Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews

Sickies Garage for average burgers and wings. Fun big menu but average food. Employees wore masks but complained about them. Nobody else has masks. In the place, in the parking lot, on the streets. No one.

9
The World's Only Corn Palace

First stop (after gas and McDonald’s of course.

Rest stop fun

Camp sit and dinner

Sunrise. Good morning.

Learnings:

  • it got a little cold and the sheet was not enough alone around 4 am. I didn’t unpack or unroll the sleeping bag so I didn’t have a good morning sleep. Didn’t want to wake Jamie or need to go to the bathroom. So I just let it be cold.

Breakfast

Eggs and sausage. Cooked on the stove. Eggs frozen and one broke in the Yeti Cooler but other than that all good.

Stephens malted hot chocolate is pretty good and the hydro flask cups work well.

Quiet morning in the camp. All the lots are full so we are not alone but they are far enough away that you can see them brush their teeth and make coffee but can’t hear them.

Mornin view from the table (no edits)

Rushmore. No Kayne.

Dinner night 2.

Foil dinners. A classic. Or so I’m told.

Hamburger, potatoes, carrots, onions and seasoning. I don’t think Jamie likes her’s. I liked it but maybe chicken or something would be better. \240These were pre-cooked so a bit of a camp cheat

Early morning drive to Custer state park. Decided to go to needles hwy first for the lighting and to keep the crowds down. It worked with the crowds. Not sure how many photos I got but we will see.

Pizza and movie in the car for lunch. We decided to take it easy, get pizza and watch Iron Man in the car. We are watching all the marvels in the chronology of the story, not of their making.

Pizza from Pizza Mill - pretty good. Good garlic bread (bought from Costco). Easy to eat in the car.

We got a little bored so decided to go to bear country. I think it is more like Elk Country with Bear. It’s a drive though “keep your windows up” type wildlife place. Cruel, and not really good. As we should up to pay they said the drive would be 3.5 hours because they are so busy and backed up. It was bumper to bumper and all to look at sickly, sleeping bad animals.

There ended up being a bunch of misfit bears. It turns out they bread them there for the parks cruel life.

The wolf below is about what we saw. \240Look hard on top of the rock.

I hate my pillow so we went to rapid city (like 2 hour drive) to go to a bed bath and beyond for a new one.

We then decided we were too lazy to go back and cook dinner so we got Outback Steakhouse to go (the place was packed all with no masks or distancing) ate it in the car behind a holiday in express and watched more of Iron Man.

Learnings:

  • If covid continues for years and we can’t see movies or eat out ally all and everyplace needs to close, eating in the car with a movie is not bad and my be a go to for us as society breaks down

Badlands National Park

Badlands

Lunch and Deadwood

After the Badlands we decided have lunch at Wall Drug again since it was right there. Still a Covid super spreader location with very few masks and zero social distancing, even from this with masks.

Thunder Storm

Big one all night. Started around 2 am and it is still raining at 7:30.

Tent worked. Equipment in mud room and chairs in vestibule.

Jamie and I probably had our best sleep yet during it.

Train ride

Lunch at Custer Wolf
