Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

I am travelling to Australia with three friends (Scott Freeman, Jake Neal, and Devon Garcha) who I have been friends with since elementary school. The plan right now is to go to Fiji for 6 days until the 14th (I arrive at 5am local time) then we fly to Sydney and start from there. We’re gonna go all around Australia so just follow along and you’ll be able to see where I’m at and what I’m up to!

I have a flight booked from Perth to Amsterdam on March 17th so the Europe leg of the trip will start then. In Amsterdam I’m meeting up with 2 friends from university so I wont be on my own at any point of my travels that I know of thus far. Everything else is pretty up in the air with what I’m doing and I’ll just go with the flow and see where I end up.

I’ll make sure to post lots of pictures so that it isn’t all reading but this first update is for anyone that doesn’t know much about the trip! I plan on returning to Canada around mid-May but we’ll see how things go!

I’m currently on my flight to San Fransisco and it was delayed 90 minutes (thanks Air Canada) so we’re stuck sitting in the plane but at least that gives me some time to write.

Me on the plane as I write my first update

I have a 6 hour layover in San Fransisco any ways so it’s not the end of the world.

I’m going try to update this at least once a day and write two things but we’ll see how well I stick to that plan.

If anyone has any questions or any recommendations for the particular place that I’m in, please don’t hesitate to let me know (or message my parents/sister and get them to tell me). Alternatively, you can also make an account for this website and leave a comment and I’ll make sure to read them and respond if I have time!!

Peace, love, and all the above

2
San Francisco Airport (SFO)

Just landed in San Francisco!! Next flight is in 4 hours to Fiji

3
San Francisco International Airport

Made it onto the plane to Fiji!

Got an 11 hour flight ahead of me! Arriving at 5am local time and I cross the international day border so I’m going into the future!!

Plus I got a funky pillow and blanket

Also this is a thing!! How fun

4
San Francisco International Airport

Got some food and I’m watching Top Gun finally, so far so good

We got sweet and sour chicken and a lady in the back said “What’s Sweden chicken”

I ended up chatting with the lady beside me who was from Fiji and gave me some recommendations on what to do while we’re here which is a win.. and she gave me a piece of gum so double win!

5
Nadi International Airport

Just landed in Fiji

Drinking Fiji water in Fiji of course

Just waiting for Scott, Devon, and Jake to get off their plane and we’ll head off to our AirBnB where we’ll be for 2 nights

6
Nadi International Airport

We all made it safe and sound!!

Still gotta wait 3 hours to check in to our AirBnB

7
Aquarius On The Beach

Stopped in for a bite to eat at Aquarius hostel while we wait to check in to the AirBnB

8
Nadi Airbnb

We made it to our Airbnb safe and sound! There was quite a bit of confusion with the address since it’s a newer subdivision. The pictures of the place were a bit misleading and it doesn’t have some amenities it claimed to have but all things considered it’s pretty nice

We all took our shirts off right away to cool down, it’s around 30 degrees and super humid

Jake loves his Fiji water

9
Nadi Airbnb

Just did our first little grocery run! We got enough food for a day and a half and it cost about $18 Canadian

Walking back from the grocery store

We got 2 loaves of fresh bread for about $1 canadian

10
Nadi Airbnb

First sleep in the Airbnb was good, we’re still a little jet lagged but it only feels like a 4 hour time difference so it isn’t too bad. We played cards to see who got what bed and I ended up getting a king bed to myself cause Scott wanted the couch with his 3rd pick and Devon got a the single bed even though he came last lol.

My bed for the first night

The weather here is super bipolar, it’ll be sunny for 30 minutes then downpour for 15 minutes then be back to sunny again. We haven’t been caught out in the rain yet but I’m sure it will happen soon enough.

The rain was coming down so hard last night it woke 3 of us up but it died down fairly quickly and we went back to bed no problem.

When we got up this morning we ate some breakfast, played some cards, and listened to music.

We’re about to go for a walk to see what’s around here. Tomorrow morning we’re planning on taking a bus to Suva (the capital of Fiji) where we’re gonna stay for 3 nights because there’s more to do around there for excursions and nicer beaches. It’s about a 4 hour bus ride so we’re going to figure out where to catch the bus and tickets today so we don’t have to scramble tomorrow when we leave.

11
Sunny Pizza and Grace Kitchen

We went for a walk to the airport to see how long it took to get to the bus station

Having a sun hat is pretty huge cause we don’t have any sunscreen yet

On the way back we stopped for food at Sunny Pizza and Grace Kitchen

After this we’re gonna stop at a grocery store to finally get some sunscreen so we don’t get burnt as hell

12
Nadi Airbnb

We’ve looked at quite a few places and can’t find sunscreen anywhere and I’m already starting to get a little burnt.. We’re gonna try our luck at a pharmacy nearby in a couple hours of staying out of the sun

13
Nadi Airbnb

We got the illusive sunscreen finally! Jake and Scott went to the store to get some more bread because it was such cheap and easy food and Jake got a $7 Fiji dollar bill as change when he paid

Fun fact Fiji is the only country with a $7 bill!! They made it when Fiji won the bronze and gold medal for women’s and men’s rugby at the 2020 Olympics

The money here looks like monopoly money.. but people probably think that about Canadas money too

We’re back playing cards for beds so wish me luck!!

14
Nadi Airbnb

Scott ended up winning cards but took the couch again with his 1st overall pick

Look at how happy he is!!!!

15
Bus to Suva

We made it to the bus! We got to the stop about 20 minutes early and it left within 5 minutes of us getting there so it’s huge that we left early. It’s about a 4 hour ride to Suva so I’m gonna try to look at the some of the scenery! If I see anything cool I’ll update this post!

On da bus

The only speaker that was playing on the bus was the one above Scott and Jake and it was playing fairly loud so Devon and I found it amusing

16
Suva Airbnb

Just arrived at our Airbnb in Suva! Looks really nice here and we can already tell there’s a lot more to do. We’re about a 10 minute walk from the city center. The host is super hospitable and she has a son that is about our age that gave us some recommendations on where to eat and said he would show us some waterfalls tomorrow which is super cool.

We’be somehow managed to avoid walking in the rain our whole time here even though it downpours sporadically throughout the day

Our Airbnb in Suva

We’re gonna go out and eat at a restaurant that was recommended by our hosts son in an hour or so and I’ll probably have another update by then

17
Maya Dhaba, Suva

Went out for Indian food at Maya Dhaba nearby and tonight we’re just gonna have a chill night and watch a movie and play cards again

18
Colo-I-Suva Forest Park

Just got back from Colo-I-Suva park! It wasn’t too far away and it was super nice, it’s still like 30 degrees out constantly and wasn’t too rainy when we got there at around 10:45am, but it started to thunderstorm at like 1pm and the rain really came down

Devon chillin in the rain

We’re probably going to go out for food again with our Airbnb hosts son in a couple hours but for now we’re just gonna hang out and relax after swimming for 3 hours

19
Paradiso Restaurant, Suva

Walked 30 minutes to eat at a recommended restaurant called Paradiso! It seems very well kept here and there’s live music and the guy who’s singing has an unreal voice. We just ordered our food and after we eat we might go get a drink.

Scott ordered a coke (shocking) and Jake was feeling saucy too

Devon and I stuck to water cause we’re classy

The restaurant is Italian so we ordered some pizza and pasta dishes!

20
Suva Airbnb

It’s our last day in Suva, we’re just about to head back to Nadi because we’re going on a boat excursion tomorrow morning! Tonight we’re staying in a hostel for the first time and it says it has decent security so I hope that’s true.

It’s another 4 hour bus ride back and once we get back we’ll probably have to taxi since it’s about a 10 minute drive. Tomorrow should be a lot of fun and might be the first chance to take a good amount of photos assuming it doesn’t rain and I don’t have to worry about my phone getting wet.

21
Bus to Nadi

We said bye to Zayid (our hosts son) and made it to the bus

Zayid and the boys

Once again our timing was really good because the bus left 20 minutes before it was scheduled to leave, so it’s a good thing we’ve been pretty prepared in advance.

Back on da bus

22
Bamboo Hostel, Nadi

Just finished our check in to the hostel, it took about an hour and a half to check in for some reason because the front desk was taking his time but there was a group of people sitting outside and socializing so we joined them and met some new people! We have 2 rooms at this hostel each with a queen bed so it’s hardly like a hostel and more like a really small apartment building.

Scott approves of the sleeping situation

We don’t plan on hanging around the hostel too much because we have a big boat/swimming/sun day ahead of us tomorrow but if we have energy in the night we may do something with the people we met!

After living out of a backpack for a week, I feel like we have all gotten a pretty good grip of things. We haven’t had any issues travelling so far because we have all been pretty responsible. We’re just getting used to the fact that everybody drives on the left hand side of the road. When we got our first cab at the airport I instinctively went to the right side of the vehicle to get into the passenger seat but the cab driver was like “What are you doing” and joked that it would be an extra $50 to drive the vehicle. We also feel pretty adjusted to the humidity, heat, and jet lag, so all and all things are going quite smoothly!

23
Ramada Inn, Nadi

Just about to get picked up for our boat excursion! We’re boating for 2 hours around some islands, then we stay at an island for 5 hours and swim/hang out, then boat back. We’re gonna have a lot of sun today so we’re going to layer on the sunscreen!

Devon is always taking business calls #nodaysoff

It seems fairly overcast today but that could be because it’s still early in the morning. Hopefully it will clear up later.

While I was making this update the bus came and we all loaded on, so we’re on our way to the Denarau port where we’ll be picked up by the boat.

24
Denarau Port

We just finished our boat excursion and it was definitely the highlight of Fiji so far. We were there for about 4 hours and swam for about about an hour and a half. The island was beautiful and the water was so warm.

The scenery on the island

While we were there we swam, played volleyball, played keep up with a soccer ball, and chatted with some locals. We played volleyball with a Fijian that had been to 291 out of the 333 islands of Fiji but has never been outside of Fiji! We didn’t get a picture with him but he was very nice.

A little video of me Scott and Devon playing keep up on the beach

The water was super blue and the scenery was awesome

A quick self timer photo

The boat ride there and back took about an hour and it was smooth sailing. We sat in the captains lounge and I taught the boys how to play euchre. Dev and Jake caught on pretty quick but Scott was on the struggle bus. One of the perks of the captains lounge was that we got free alcohol and snacks so we had some wine and Fijian beer and chips. The lady that was working in the lounge was super nice and interested in what we were playing so she watched and cheered us on!

All of us in the captains lounge

We’re now on the bus back to the hostel and we don’t know what we’re going to do tonight but we might head to the beach and hang out.

25
Bamboo Hostel, Nadi

After getting back from the boat tour we went straight to our hostel. Some people we met yesterday were playing beer pong so we grabbed some drinks and joined them! After playing for a bit we grabbed some food at a beach front bar that had live music and chatted for another hour.

We’re heading out tomorrow and had a long day in the sun so it wasn’t a very late night. I’m sure we’re going to have a bunch of late nights ahead of us and we’re travelling tomorrow so we wanted to have a good sleep tonight.

26
The Beach Club, Wailoaloa

We checked out of the hostel at 10am and stopped in for some breakfast at The Beach Club nearby!

The pancakes were unreal and I even ordered eggs (shocking) because I wanted a bit more nutritional value

We’re heading to the airport in about an hour because my flight to Sydney leaves in 3.5 hours and we don’t have much time for anything else. We might walk around to kill time until then.

27
Nadi International Airport

Just made it to the airport. My flight doesn’t leave for another 3 hours so I’ve got plenty of time. I’m on a different flight than Devon, Scott and Jake and they fly out about 2 hours after me.

Me at the Nadi International Airport

Since I’m here super early I’m going to check my bag then probably hangout and play cards before going through security.

All checked in and ready to go!

28
Nadi International Airport

My flight to Sydney was delayed \240little bit, not sure how long as of yet but it’s not that big of a deal since I would have to wait in Sydney for the other guys to land.

My flight is the only one that is delayed. Classic.

While sitting and passing time my legs got itchy and I just realized how many bug bites I have. Not really sure when I got them but they feel like a bunch of mosquito bites. I know Devon also got bit a bunch and he’s pretty itchy too. Hopefully they’ll go away soon.

Less than ideal. I can count at least 7 distinct bites in this picture alone. My other leg is just as bad and it’s all over both my feet/calf as well

29
Nadi International Airport

Made it onto the plane! Have about a 5 hour flight ahead of me. There are an outrageous amount of kids on this flight and they’re all noisy so I’m super thankful I have noise cancelling headphones. I have a kid behind me that was kicking my seat but he stopped. Hopefully he falls asleep or I might have to knock him out (joking of course).

I got a window seat on this flight so I might take a picture or two if I see nice scenery

30
Sydney International Airport

Just landed in Sydney! I’ve got my phone all set up and now just have to wait about 2 hours for the other guys to land. Since it’s Summer here it’s still pretty light out.

First selfie in Sydney

The sky at 9:30pm

The itcheness on my legs/feet is still brutal so I’m really hoping it passes soon. I’m going to go find some food because I slept on the plane when they brought food around.

31
Sydney International Airport

Jake, Devon, and Scott just arrived! Scott said their flight also had a ton of children on it too and they were screaming and crying.

Safe and sound in Sydney

The guys haven’t eaten yet so we might get some food after we check in to our Airbnb.

32
Airbnb in Sydney

Just got to our Airbnb, we’re right in the city center and it’s a saturday night so there’s a fair amount of foot traffic on the street. We’re all pretty tired though so we’re just going to be heading to bed.

Big ol thumbs up

My feet feel a little bit less itchy after taking my shoes and socks off but they certainly don’t look too great.

After a little google I think it could be flea bites but I’m not positive. Devons feet look pretty similar but Scott and Jake are totally fine.

33
Airbnb in Sydney

Jake and Scott woke up early to go to a bar and watch some football and Devon and I stayed back to get some antihistamines and calamine lotion. Walking is not very comfortable right now and we had to walk to the store but at least the temperature is nice!

Devon and I are thrilled to have these goodies

My right foot got it the worst for sure and it’s hard to tell if it’s getting better or worse but hopefully the meds will help.

34
485 Crown St

Devon and I ended up going to FourAteFive because it had really good reviews and the food was amazing. We’re still getting used to the fact that the price that it says on a menu is what you pay and it’s so much better than what it’s like in Canada.

I got a Beef Kofta and it was delicious

Since Scott and Jake are still watching football Devon and I decided to walk around and we’re going to go to the Anzac Memorial which is about 15 minutes away.

35
Anzac Memorial

After walking for a bit we found a fun street name that we had to take a picture with!

Devon on Devonshire

Then we made it to the Anzac (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) Memorial which is a memorial for World War 1.

The Anzac Memorial from the outside

On the inside it had a bunch of ground samples from different areas in New South Wales.

The center of the building

On the ring on the ground there are more samples from other countries that were significant battle grounds from the war

A closer look at the samples

Devon and I are now gonna meet up with Scott and Jake because they’re done watching football!

36
Sydney Opera House

We decided to go to the Opera House to check it out! We went for a walk along the water

The Sydney Opera House

It’s super busy here because it’s Summer and the weekend.

pt 2

We were looking at some places to get food around here but everything is super jacked up because of the tourism.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge

There’s a massive cruise ship currently docked here. We googled the max occupancy and it can hold about 5000 people which is pretty nuts.

We ended up walking around the harbour and are currently stopped at City Extra for a beer

Tonight we’re probably going to get some pizza because we want something cheaper that will fill us up!

37
Four Ate Five, Sydney

After getting back from the Sydney Opera House yesterday we got pizza and watched a movie at our Airbnb. We were all pretty tired so it was an early night.

We woke up at about 10am and we’re all heading to Manly Beach for a little beach day, but first we needed to eat. Right now we’re at Four Ate Five again which is where Devon and I ate yesterday because it was so good. I ordered a milkshake this time cause I was feeling adventurous.

Scott loves the coffee here

Jake can’t wait to eat!!!

After we eat it’s about a 30 minute walk to a ferry which will take us across the Sydney Harbour to our beach.

38
Bronte Beach

We actually changed our minds and headed to a different beach called Bronte Beach. It’s also super highly rated because it was a little bit closer and easier to get to.

We’re probably gonna stay here for a couple hours so we’re on a quest to find a ball to play with.

39
Bronte Baths

Scott and I decided to check out this little pool that was beside the shore because there was a little spot you could jump from.

The pool beside the ocean

Everybody that was jumping off was like 13 years old and we thought it was deeper than it was. I jumped off first and skinned my ankle on the ground. I warned Scott so he jumped off injury free.

My feet are really going through the ringer

It honestly hardly hurts so nobody worry too much. Scott and I only jumped off once because I didn’t want to put my bloody foot back in the water so we walked back to meet up with Jake and Devon. When I got back to them I realized my watch fell off though so it just have fallen off when I jumped. Scott and I went back to check if it was anywhere near where we jumped in but couldn’t see because the water wasn’t very clear. Scott grabbed a pair of goggles that were lying nearby and swam around but couldn’t find it. He gave them to me to see if I wanted to try and within 30 seconds of looking I found it right around where I jumped in!! So all is well around here now.

Reunited and it feels so good

I’m lucky I was with Scott because he’s notorious for losing things and then finding them somehow. He’s been pretty good on the trip so far though!!

40
Hotel Ravesis

The UV index was an 11 here for most of the day so we made sure to stay in the shade. We’re going to look around for a small ball that we can toss around so we have more to do when we’re hanging out at a beach. After some time in the shade we walked over to the famous Bondi Beach.

A view on our walk to Bondi Beach

Another little view of a smaller beach nearby

Bondi Beach!!

We’re going to do a big day at Bondi Beach some time in the next couple days when we’re at our hostel so we decided to go for a drink nearby at Hotel Ravesis because it was recommended by our Uber driver.

Us at Ravesis

After we have a drink or two we’re going to head back to our Airbnb and make some food!

41
Sydney Airbnb

Made it back to the Airbnb, Jake is making some spaghetti while we all watch The Hangover pt 2

Masterchef Jake

While we were getting some groceries Devon and Scott went to check out liquor prices and you can get a 4L bottle of wine for $11 which is nuts.

42
Central, Eddy Ave, Haymarket NSW 2000, Australia

We’re off to our next accommodation, Wake Up! Sydney, which is a very highly rated hostel around here.

On the move

It’s about a 5 minute walk away but we can’t check in quite yet so we’re going to drop our bags off and go get some breakfast somewhere nearby. We’re staying at this hostel for the next 4 nights and they have some activities like trivia night. Once we check in and have breakfast we’ll probably have a better idea of what we’re going to do today.

43
Roadhouse Burgers, Sydney

While waiting to check in we googled good places for food and stumbled across Roadhouse Burgers which has a 4.9/5 on google.

Jake can’t wait for a burger

We can check in at 12pm so we’re going to take our time eating!

The food here looks so tasty

44
Wake Up! Sydney

Just made it to the hostel! We’re getting settled and dropping our bags off then we’re going to go look for a good ball to bring to beaches.

The beds are nice and clean and ready to go

The security here is quite good and there’s lockers for our bags but my lock doesn’t quite fit so I might have to get a new one.

45
Victoria Park, City Rd

We found a good ball and a park was nearby so we played a little football game that we made up! We didn’t bring the sunscreen or too much water with us because we didn’t think we would be outside for too long. That said we ended up running around quite a bit for an hour and a half.

We tried to stick to the shade as much as possible

Scott made a good sliding catch but he wasn’t wearing a shirt so he’s probably gonna be super itchy now. Despite his efforts, Jake and I were victorious and won the game 7-3. Im sure we’re gonna have another match soon now that we have a ball.

Big win for the good guys

We’re gonna head back to the hostel and shower then head to happy hour at the bar in the hostel at 5pm. At 7pm there’s trivia night going on so we’re going to go to that too and see if our hostel roommates want to join because we’re in a shared 8 room dorm.

46
Wake Up! Sydney

After getting back from the park we all took a shower and rested for 15 minutes. 2 more of our roommates showed up and they’re from England. We have one more person in our room but he’s set up his blanket and he’s been in his bed since we checked in. Jake and Dev went to go get some Burger King nearby and Scott and I weren’t too hungry so we went to a little mart and got some ramen noodles as a little snack.

We love our ramen

Once we eat we’re going to go down for happy hour and have a drink or two before trivia!

47
Wake Up! Sydney

We got to happy hour at about 6pm so we had around 3 beers each and played trivia!

We were there pretty early so it was empty

We got 26/33 which I think is pretty good for 4 people. The winning table had about 10-12 people and got 32/33. The place was fairly busy when trivia started and after trivia finished a DJ came on and started playing music and the place turned into a club. We didn’t really feel like drinking tonight so we left to find a little snack and go for a walk. We ended up stumbling across a grocery store so we got some things for sandwiches for the next couple days.

48
Wake Up! Sydney

We woke up at around 9:30am and had some PB&J sandwiches for breakfast. We’re just about to catch the bus for our beach walk and there’s a lot of other people from the hostel that are joining, so hopefully it will be pretty social.

Dev Scott and Jake are ready to go

Once we bus to the beach walk we’ll be walking for about an hour or so in a similar place we walked yesterday!

49
Bondi Beach

Just finished our beach walk and we’re back at Bondi Beach.

Some cool ribbons. No idea if there’s any significance.

The walk looks similar to the pictures yesterday but this time there was a crowd walking with us.

It kind of felt like we were back in elementary school on a little field trip.

Don’t mind my sweaty forehead, it’s hot out

We walked about 5-6km in total so it wasn’t too crazy and we started chatting with another Canadian from Toronto who’s been here since August so he gave us some recommendations on other places he’s been to in Australia.

Another good view on the walk

Bondi Beach from a distance

Now that we’re at the final destination of our walk we’re going to set up our towels, throw the ball around and swim for a bit!

50
Bondi Beach, Campbell Pde, Stand C, Bondi Beach NSW 2026, Australia

Just finished up at the beach! We were in the water for quite a while throwing a waboba ball around and the water was a perfect temperature out. It’s a little windy but it’s nice because it’s keeping us cool in the sun.

Starting to tan a little bit

Now we’re on the hunt for some food so we’re going to go to a wing place called El Camino that Jake has been to because they have a deal for drinks and wings on Wednesdays!

51
El Camino Cantina The Rocks

We made it to El Camino! They have 10 cent wings with an order of a drink which is nuts. The Pepsi was $6.50 though so it evens it out a bit but still $8.50 for a meal is pretty unreal.

Of course Devon gets his food first

They’re definitely not the best quality but they’re actually not that bad so it’s still a sweet deal

52
Wake Up! Sydney

After wings we headed back to the hostel and all showered/rested up. There was a wine and cheese night going on tonight at 8pm so we got ready and went downstairs. The wine was free so we all had a cup or two and socialized/played so beer pong.

A little cheers! Scott was late to it so we got a head start.

After about an hour or so we went downstairs to the bar/club called The Side Bar. We didn’t feel like drinking so we went to a table and played some cards. We met a 32 year old from Argentina and taught her the game we were playing. We’ve met two people from Argentina and Devon has been super quick to ask them about the big World Cup win to which they’ve both replied that they were ecstatic. We had a pretty early night because we’re going to a place called Blue Mountain tomorrow at 8am!

53
Central Station

We all woke up around 8:00am this morning and had some more sandwiches for breakfast. We’re planning on going to the Blue Mountains which is a small mountain range not about 2 hours away. Our train left at 9:18 so we had about an hour to eat and get ready to go! It was only a 5 minute walk to the train station so we left at 9am and headed over!!

Inside the Central Station

We found our train pretty quick and we hopped on with about 4 minutes to spare!

Devon loves his trains

We’re get off at the last stop so we’ll be on the train for the next hour and a bit!

Scott is still sleepy so he might take a nap

Once we get off the train we’ll be hopping on a bus for about 30 minutes and start our 7km hike up the mountain to the top of the mountain!

On a completely unrelated note, both my and Devon’s feet are feeling way way better.

The redness is still a little there but the itchiness is completely gone at this point.

My heel looks way better too

I’m glad that it’s going away cause we’ve been walking quite a bit and it wasn’t super comfortable to walk around a couple days ago. We’ve walked around 15km three of the last four days and are probably gonna top that today. I’m also super glad I found a good supportive pair of shoes because my feet don’t need any more problems.

54
Blue Mountains

We just finished our hike at the Blue Mountains! It was super foggy so there wasn’t a ton of visibility but it was some pretty cool scenery!

The 4 of us starting off our hike

As we were leaving the hostel we met 2 people (Anders and Maria) that happened to be going to Blue Mountain as well so we’ve all being travelling together!

The start of the hike

There was a super light rain so we all had our rain jackets

We started our walk by doing the Giant Stairway which is 998 steps down and about 300m of elevation

A little view of the steps

Once we got lower we could actually see the ground but it was still quite foggy

There were some steps where you could see a steep drop below

A fun tree we saw on the way down

Some steep steps heading down further

Once we got to the ground level it was more flat which was a nice break on the knees

We had to keep our eye out for small leeches that snuck onto our shoes and socks! This one was a bigger one.

Some small waterfalls!

Another little waterfall

One of the bigger falls of the walk

Then we had our climb back up! The waterfall on the left in this picture is where the picture before was taken

In total we walked about 7km with a 400m elevation change. There were quite a few switchbacks up and down so it was rarely flat ground. It was a nice workout on the quads and calves for sure!

By the time we finished we were all very ready to eat

We just so happened to catch the bus as it was coming which was unreal timing! We had to wait no more than 20 seconds.

Now we’re going to find somewhere to eat before we head back to Sydney!

55
Aunty Ed's Restaurant and Bar

We found a little restaurant called Aunty Ed’s so we decided to eat there!

Some hungry hippos

I ordered a falafel bowl because I wanted to eat something healthier for once

We catch our train in about an hour and a half so we have plenty of time to figure out the route home.

56
ivy Sydney

After getting back from Blue Mountain we had a little rest and shower. We wanted to go out for some drinks at a club called Ivy that is pretty popular around here so we bought a 4L box of wine to share and played some cards to pre-drink. We left the hostel at about 9:30pm and walked there which took about 30 minutes. When we got there the line was pretty huge but it moved quickly.

A little view of the line behind us

After getting in the place was pretty packed. It was fun but drinks were $12 for a single highball and $20 for a double which is just absurd. We didn’t want to spend too much so we mostly just chatted with random people.

Inside Ivy

There were two floors so that picture is just a little snippet of how big it was.

We didn’t stay too long and left at about 12:45pm because we had such a long day and we’re getting tired. We all went to bed and don’t have too much planned for tomorrow as of yet.

57
Wake Up! Sydney

This morning has been pretty lazy so far which is the first day we have lazed around since leaving Canada. We’re going to have a big laundry day today and maybe just walk the streets but I don’t think we’re going to be doing anything too eventful since we leave Sydney to Byron Bay tomorrow.

Devon and Scott hanging out while we wait for our laundry

Our flight to Byron Bay leaves tomorrow at around 3pm so we will have plenty of time in the morning to gather up our stuff and head to the airport.

So far Sydney has felt pretty similar to Vancouver since it is a bigger city but it’s quite a bit nicer and warmer here. I think all of us are excited to get out of Sydney and experience what it’s like outside of the city.

58
Wake Up! Sydney

We just finished folding and putting away all our laundry! It feels super nice to have a full bag of clean clothes now and it also makes packing a whole lot easier.

All nice and rolled up and ready to pack away

We still don’t really have any plans for the day so we’re just going to hang out and relax for the most part.

59
Wake Up! Sydney

After laying in bed and doing nothing productive for a solid 6 hours (other than going out to the grocery store to get some food) we decided to get up and play some cards downstairs! \240Today I taught the boys how to play hearts and it was an absolute slaughterhouse. I did have an unfair advantage knowing how to play but I had a flawless game with 0 points by the end of it. Yet again Devon managed to come last but he was getting the hang of it by the end.

Playing cards for about the 15th time

We played for about an hour or so and the area we were sitting closed at 10pm so it was perfect timing for when the game ended.

The final score of the game

Devon and Jake are pretty tired so they’re going to head to bed and Scott and I are going to go downstairs to the lobby and hangout cause we still have a bit of energy.

60
Wake Up! Sydney

Back at it again playing more cards of course!! Scott and I played crazy 8 countdown and just hung out and chatted for around another hour and a half. We have to check out at 10am tomorrow so we’re heading to bed now.

I beat Scott 2-1 in the best of 3 but it was really close each time

While we were playing the music from the club was booming through the floor and we could feel and hear the bass easily. If there’s people that sleep on the first floor I find it hard to believe they can’t hear it at all but maybe where we’re sitting is right on top of the speakers.

61
Wake Up! Sydney

Just finished packing all our stuff up so we could check out! The fire alarm went off at 4am and 8am throughout the night which is ridiculous. Once it went off the second time we just got up for good so we would have adequate time to get our things together.

All packed up and ready to go

Now we’re going to go for some breakfast because we won’t have another opportunity to eat until we land in Byron Bay since we don’t want to pay extra at the airport. Our flight leaves in 5 hours so we have a little bit of time to kill anyways!

We can leave our bigger bags at the hostel which is huge cause we don’t want to lug them around while we find somewhere to eat

62
Shift Eatery

We stopped at Shift Eatery for food! It only had vegan options and we were going to pick somewhere else but Jake ordered his food so I stayed with him and ordered as well. Devon and Scott weren’t feeling the food options so they decided to eat elsewhere.

Jake and I both got salads and they were pretty tasty

Devon and Scott ended up going to a cafe nearby and ended up ordering a vegan smoothie bowl.

63
Sydney Airport

We’re currently waiting at our gate at the Sydney airport! Our flight leaves in about an hour.

We took the train to the airport because it was way cheaper than taking an Uber and we had plenty of time

We don’t leave for another hour, so we’ve been tossing the ball around playing a little made up game for fun.

We called our game “Fun trivia rock game”

We get in to Byron Bay at about 4pm and we might try to go to a beach or go for a bike today. Tomorrow we’re going to have a big beach day because we get free surfboards at the hostel we’re staying at!

64
Sydney Airport

Made it on to the flight to Byron Bay!

Devon is sitting all by his lonesome so he wasn’t able to fit in the photo

So sad (he’s joking don’t worry)

65
Ballina Byron Gateway Airport

Just landed in Ballina/Byron Bay Airport!

The airport is super small here

Tarmac selfie!

I wasn’t supposed to use my phone on the tarmac and a worker told me not to but I still got the photo anyways.

We have about a 1 hour bus ride to get into Byron Bay

Once again our timing was impeccable and we had to wait no longer than 4 minutes for the bus. Once we got on it stuck around for 5 minutes so we wouldn’t have missed it if we were a bit later but the next bus comes in 2 hours so I’m glad we caught it.

66
Wake Up! Byron Bay

We got to our hostel at about 6:15 and checked in/moved all of our bags in. After getting a little settled we went to the beach while it was still a little daylight out! We threw a football around and juggled a soccer ball! The beach here is super nice and we’re probably going to go surfing tomorrow.

Juggling on the beach

After playing around for a good hour and a half, we were real hungry and decided to grab some food! We ended up going to a place called Treehouse which is right by our hostel.

Jake showed up a little late so we ordered without him but his foods on the way

67
Wake Up! Byron Bay

We all woke up at about 8:15am but Scott and Jake wanted to watch the football game so Devon and I decided to go to the free yoga class that they have at 9am every morning here!

Devon outside the yoga tent

It sure makes me realize how much more flexible other people are but it was a really good start to the day! After we finished both Devon and I felt very relaxed and ready to take on the day. Scott and Jake are still watching football so Devon and I are going to head into town to get groceries because we’re going to make our own dinner tonight and get breakfast for tomorrow morning.

68
Wake Up! Byron Bay

Devon and I just got back from our little grocery run and we definitely saved money by buying out own food. In total it’s going to be about $12 each for dinner tonight and breakfast for the next 2 days which is much better than spending $25 each at a restaurant for one meal.

Devon and his groceries

It was only a 20 minute walk into town and we challenged ourselves to get to the grocery store without google maps. We ended up having to ask some people for directions and they were super helpful. One person we asked happened to work for a tour guide company and she is going to give us some free vouchers to kayak with dolphins because it’s the end of the week and she has a surplus. She also talked about her experience backpacking the east coast of Australia and gave us some suggestions. She strongly recommend checking out Fraser Island. While Devon and I were in the grocery store we were talking about how we could plan out the next couple weeks and a local also really recommended we check out Fraser Island and that it was his favourite place to go, so there’s a really good chance we end up going there.

Scott and Jake are done watching football so we’re going to meet them at the beach now!

69
Belongil Beach

We’re at the beach now! It’s only about a minute walk to the beach from the hostel. We’re going to spend about an hour here then head back into town as 4 so we can pick up those free vouchers!

A little view of the beach

We’re all sunscreened up and ready to go

70
Belongil Beach

We ended up heading back into town to get those free vouchers and also planned a good chunk of our time from mid-February to early March. We had to spend a fair amount but at least we got it out of the way and know how much the trip is going to cost us now.

After getting back from town we headed to the beach to try surfing for the first time in Australia.

Carrying our boards to the water

The boards the hostel had weren’t the best quality which isn’t surprising considering they were free. We met one of our roommates named Layton from California and we invited him to come along with us! We threw the football around for awhile then went into the water.

Ready to surf!!

Jake and I have surfed before but both of us aren’t the most experienced. This particular beach wasn’t very good for surfing so we weren’t really able to stand up but it was good experience having the board in the water for next time we go!

71
Wake Up! Byron Bay

After the beach and relaxing for a little bit we went and made our dinner which was our first decent meal that we’ve made on the trip! We had stir fry and it was the perfect amount of food for all of us.

Yummy

Devon couldn’t wait to dig in

We were all pretty tired so after we ate we just went back to our room and crawled into bed. There’s a sunrise walk to a lighthouse tomorrow morning at 5am and Devon and I signed up for it but Dev isn’t feeling super good so he would rather get his sleep. I think I’m still going to go on it but I might re-evaluate after when I wake up at 4:30am. Tomorrow we’re doing a kayak with dolphins because we got those free vouchers and that starts at around 10am as well so I might be running on fumes if I go for the walk as well.

72
Cape Byron Lighthouse

I managed to get up at 4:40am to make it to the sunrise. We got a shuttle to a lighthouse lookout area where you could see the sunrise over the water as far as the eye could see. It wasn’t the best sunrise I’ve seen but the scenery was really nice.

A view as the sun just peaked through

The water and waves looked so nice in person

The lighthouse

The coastline nearby

73
Cape Byron Kayaks

We just finished our dolphin kayak which took about 2.5 hours. We spent the whole time in the sun battling the ocean waves so it was pretty tiring! None of us brought our phone so unfortunately we don’t have many photos but better to be safe than sorry. There’s going to be plenty other things we can take photos of.

Jake prepped and ready for action

Devon showing his rowing technique

Devon and Jake were in one kayak and Scott and I were in the other. Jake and Dev struggled to get out initially and fell out a couple times but were smooth sailing after that. Scott and I got our first try but we capsized halfway through the tour, so we both had a nice spill. We did see a few dolphins but they weren’t the most active so it was mostly from a distance. 3 dolphins did swim right underneath Jake and Dev though and they were worried the dolphin was going to take them out somehow.

After 2 hours of being out in the water, I definitely had enough and my stomach did too. Dev and Jake saw someone throw up during the tour but I managed to keep it together. By the end of it Devon and I were so tired we just went back to the hostel and Jake and Scott went to go eat some food at a burger place!

74
Wake Up! Byron Bay

We didn’t have a super eventful afternoon. We got back from kayaking and layed around in bed for quite awhile. I don’t know about the other guys but I think I slept from about 1pm until 5pm. After we continued to lounge around for a bit longer we went to the kitchen and made some more food/played cards. Since we weren’t doing much we took the time to plan further ahead in the trip and we now have everything in Australia pretty much planned except for 2 weeks in February. We’re going to be doing a lot of exciting stuff in later February like scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef so stay tuned for that and some other fun surprises!!

I didn’t take any photos after kayaking since it was a lot of lounging around so here’s a selfie before bed.

A bonus picture of Scott

75
Wake Up! Byron Bay

We’re back on the move! All checked out and heading up to Gold Coast where we’ll be staying for a week.. Our bus leaves in about an hour and it’s an hour and a half ride.

Packed up once again but this time we’re more tanned

I got some crazy tan lines going on from kayaking yesterday

Scott’s thighs are just as bad

76
Legends Hotel

We made it to Gold Coast! Our bus was about 30 minutes late so we had to wait around in Byron Bay for a little longer than expected but the travels went by quick.

Jake practicing his surfing

We’re staying in a hotel room here for the next week until the 31st then we’ll be heading to Brisbane. It’s a hotel room but we found it on Airbnb so we aren’t really sure how it works but it’s only $41 a night per person which isn’t bad at all.

We got to our room nice with no issues

The room also has some amenities like a hot plate, toaster, and other appliances so we’re going to try to make our own food for most of the days we’re here.

Our view! We’re only about a 5 minute walk from the beach

A view of the city as well, not as crazy

77
Legends Hotel

We had a pretty relaxing day today because Devon is still feeling under the weather and it was stormy outside.

We went and got some groceries for food today and tomorrow. Jake and I went for a walk afterwards to check the beach out and there’s some really nice beach volleyball courts which I’m excited for.

We made some tacos for dinner tonight!

Since we weren’t doing much today we decided to just have an early night and watch a movie. We settled on watching The Dark Knight Rises because we all haven’t seen it in so long.

Go Batman

We don’t have much planned for tomorrow yet but we will likely do something a bit more engaging!

78
Legends Hotel

We all woke up at about 8am today and Scott and I wanted to check out the pool before it got too busy so we headed down right away.

The pool area at our hotel

We went in the hot tub and it was more of a warm tub cause it was probably only about 90 degrees fehrenheit. It definitely didn’t need to be super hot though because it’s already 25 degrees celsius out at 9am.

Lounging around

Scott and I are going to dry off in the sun then walk around a little bit to explore!

79
Legends Hotel

After lounging around for a bit I went for a walk back to the beach volleyball courts to see if anyone was playing but they were all empty. I’m gonna have to give it another go later because I really wanna play.

A picture of the beach right near our place

Since there’s nobody playing volleyball I headed back to the hotel because Scott is at the pool and Jake might head down soon too. Devon is still getting as much rest as he can because tomorrow is Australia Day and we might be drinking a fair amount.

Back at the pool with Scott! We’re probably going to throw around the football

80
Legends Hotel

After playing catch in the pool for awhile Scott and I went to the steam room and it was super nice on the sinuses but we could hardly handle longer than 15 minutes.

Nice and sweaty

Now we’re going to go for wings at El Camino again for the cheap deal because it’s Wednesday!

81
Legends Hotel

We didn’t have too eventful of a day again today which has been nice to just relax. It’s also nice cause Devon hasn’t had to miss out on anything for being under the weather. He’s starting to feel better which is good but not sure if he’ll be 100% by tomorrow. Tomorrow is Australia Day and we’re meeting up with a friend from Kelowna that moved out here pretty recently! Again not many photos taken today so heres a nice photo before bed.

Scott got a head start and is already asleep

82
Legends Hotel

We’re just leaving to our friends now where we’ll be for pretty much the whole day! It’s about a 30 minute drive away so we’re going to Uber. Devon is still under the weather so he’s going to just rest up which is too bad.

Ready to rumble

83
Burleigh Pavilion

After getting to our friends place we had a couple drinks and walked down to the bar the was close by called the pavilion.

The view from our friends apartment

This place turns into more of a night club when it gets dark out so we went a little early to get food

84
47 Hayle St, Burleigh Heads QLD 4220, Australia

We didn’t end up staying out too late and left the pav to get some more food at about 8pm. I wanted to go for a swim in the ocean and asked a couple others and they were down to as well. After getting a small snack we went down to the beach and swam for a bit and the water was so nice. Apparently there was a shark spotting earlier in the day and it bit someone’s leg off but I’m not sure if it’s true or not. I don’t have any pictures from the beach because it was too dark out and I wasn’t on my phone much.

Here’s a picture of the view after we got back from the beach. That smaller white building near the water is the pav!

85
GC Aqua Park

After a pretty slow morning we made our way out to the GC Aqua Park with some friends here! It’s basically like a giant wibbit!

The aqua park

We were on it for about an hour which was more than good enough because it was pretty tiring running around on it.

The boys and Abby (our friend from Kelowna that moved here)

Afterwards we threw a football around while we dried off more then walked across the street to get some groceries. Now we’re going to head back to the hotel and relax for a bit.

86
Legends Hotel

Once we got back to the place and rested up for a bit we went out for some food. Scott and I already ate some sandwiches from the groceries we bought so we were mostly just joining Devon and Jake. We went to Wahlburgers and the burgers were pretty underwhelming for what they cost.

Devon was really excited for his Wahlburger burger!!

We’ve noticed at quite a few places that servers aren’t much of a thing and there are QR codes at tables where you just order online and they bring the food to your table instead. It was a pretty quick meal since they paid before the food came out so we all went back to the hotel room and Scott and I went for a swim/sauna before the pool closed at 9pm.

Now we’re back in the room watching another movie to wind down before bed!

87
Surfers Paradise Beach

We had a nice beach day today! We’re still on the hunt to play volleyball and they took down the volleyball nets by our place which is super rude.

Jake and I went for a little walk to scout out a spot on the beach while Devon and Scott ran to the pharmacist

Since we couldn’t play volleyball we found a spot on the beach that wasn’t too crowded (which was hard since it’s Saturday) and played some more of our football game.

The football was super sandy because the sand was sticky and the ball kept going in the water

The UV index was an 11 but it was cloudy so it helped us out a little bit. We still got a good amount of sun so now we’re going to go get some food, shower then probably play some cards

88
House of Brews

We ended up going for a sauna then showered and went out for a beer. Alcohol other than wine is super expensive so we had to get the biggest thing to share to save money of course.

We got a 2.5L beer tube between the 4 of us for $60

That probably seems a little intense but it ended up being about $15.00 for 2 sleeves which isn’t too bad at all.

89
Surfers Paradise Mini Golf

This morning was fairly laid back again, I went to the beach for a couple hours while the other guys stayed back and relaxed.

I’m definitely starting to get a tan on

After I got back we took advantage of the fact there was laundry machines in the building and cleaned our clothes.

It took us until about 4pm to get out and rolling today and we decided to play mini golf for a little $15 wager.

Team Jake and Scott wore black on black

Team Devon and Grayson went for the classier grey on beige

It was a tight game. Devon and I were up by one stroke going into the 18th hole and Jake made the tying putt to send us into to a playoff hole. On the second playoff hole Scott made a bank shot off the wall and Devon and I both missed our putts so Scott and Jake came out on top. We haven’t had a ton to eat so we’re going to go get food now!

90
Legends Hotel

Today was also a pretty laid back day. We woke up in the morning and watched football until about 1pm. Devon and Scott had a couple drinks while the two games played and they crashed pretty hard so they both had a nap afterwards. While they were sleeping Jake and I watched a movie then we all got up and went for a little walk.

The boys in front of a little sculpture

On our walk we got ice cream and just explored a little bit. After an hour or so we got back to the hotel and Scott, Jake and I went for a swim in the pool. We were the only ones in the pool so we were tossing a ball around. When I was getting out of the pool to get the ball my shorts caught on something and ripped which is super sad because I really liked them!

My ripped shorts

Patagonia has a pretty good return/repair service so next time there’s a patagonia store nearby I’m going to see if they can help me out.

Tomorrow we leave for Brisbane at about 5pm which is where we’ll be for the next week!

91
Legends Hotel

We just cleaned up the room we were staying in because we had to check out at 10am. Our bus to Brisbane doesn’t leave until 5:45pm so we have a bit of time to kill..

All packed once again!

Jake and Scott went for a little walk to find some souvenirs from Gold Coast and Devon and I are gonna stay back with the bags. When they get back we might just hangout in the lobby and play cards for a couple hours then maybe grab some food.

Devon chillaxin on the couch

92
Greyhound Bus Stop Surfers Paradise

We played cards for a bit and I taught the boys how to play canasta. We didn’t have time for a full game because we wanted to get food so when we get to our place we might play cards for beds again. When we went to get food we went in 2s so we didn’t have to bring our bags with us and when Scott and Jake went they found someone’s wallet on the ground but we found the person on Facebook and got it back to him so all is well.

Scott and Jake just before we left the hotel

Right before we left it started to downpour and thunderstorm. It’s about a 5-6 minute walk to the bus stop but it was coming down so we had to stay under cover as much as possible.

The rain just outside our hotel

We made it to the bus safe and sound with a bit of time to spare though and didn’t get rained on too badly since we were under cover for a good chunk but I stepped in a puddle and now I have a wet shoe and sock for the bus ride. Hopefully I don’t get trench foot.

Our home for the next hour or so

Scott and I are going to watch and episode of game of thrones now assuming we don’t get motion sick.

93
46 Manning St

We made it to Brisbane! The bus ride went by super fast, Scott and I didn’t even make it through our episode! After the bus ride we threw the football around to see who would be the first one to drop the ball in Brisbane and it was Scott off of a tough throw by Jake.

Just after our football throw around

We typed in the address and it was 2km away so we decided to walk it. It didn’t take too long and we got to see some cool buildings here at night.

A couple buildings were lit up with purple light, not really sure why

When we got to our place we took our bags off and got a little settled. The place here is super modern and nice. We’re very close to the city center which is awesome.

Dev and Jake in the Brisbane

After we got all settled we decided to finish our game of Canasta and Devon and Jake won! They had a really 4th hand because Scott and I didn’t even get open so it set us back quite a bit but we almost made a comeback.

The scores of the game

Now we might just watch a show/movie then go to bed. We’re going to explore a bit more of the city tomorrow and find something to do. Sometime within the next couple days we’re going to an animal reserve to hold a koala and pet some dingos!!

94
Gallery of Modern Art

When we got up this morning we did a little grocery run to stock up since we’re staying in Brisbane for the next week. After we got back to our place we played another little game of Canasta. Scott and I won this time so we’re now tied 1-1 in the series and this game was to determine who picks the movie tonight so the power is in our hands.

Playing Canasta in the morning

After we played our cards we decided to walk over to the Gallery of Modern Art nearby!

A cool graphic wall we saw on the way

Inside the Gallery of Modern Art

Devon and I debated going to see the Air exhibit that they had showing but it’s $20 to get in. We might come back another day because apparently it’s quite immersive. For now though we just decided to look around at the other art that was displayed because we didn’t have to pay anything.

A cool piece of abstract art

Another really cool piece (Devons favourite)

Now we’re going to head over to the Queensland Museum since it’s so close!

95
Grill'd South Bank

We went to the museum for a bit and saw a couple exhibits. There was a “science world” type part of the museum that was closed which is too bad because I think that would be been a lot of fun. After about an hour at the museum we went to Grill’d for a burger because we have heard from quite a few people that the burgers there are really good.

The boys at Grill’d

They ordered their food before me because I was slow to decide so I got mine after they had all finished.

Me and my burger

All the boys including myself loved the burgers. Devon was especially fond of his and claimed it was even in his top 3. We might end up going back there because it was pretty tasty.

96
Gallery of Modern Art

After the sun went down we went to check out a building’s exterior that was designed by James Turrell. He works with light primarily so the whole exterior was lit up. Devon is a huge fan of his work so he was over the moon when he saw it.

Devon by the James Turrell art

The light changed colour every now and then and was ombré at times. It was pretty fascinating to look at.

You can see a bit of the ombré in this one but it was on the tail end

Once the sun went down the colours looked a whole lot more vibrant.

Every colour looked really cool

It was hard to capture the yellow-ish colour because it came out grey so I didn’t take any photos of it but I think it was my favourite.

97
46 Manning St

We had a slower morning because it was pretty cloudy and gloomy outside. We decided against going to the Lone Pine animal reserve because it was about $50 per person or $80 if you wanted to hold a koala and get a picture with one. We googled and it’s quite a bit cheaper in Perth so we’ll probably do that there instead.

To pass some time in the morning we played another game of Canasta to settle the best of 3 and Scott and I came out victorious!

Jake couldn’t believe he lost!

Instead of the animal reserve we’re going to go check out Mt Coot-Tha which has a lookout, a planetarium, and some botanic gardens!

98
Mount Coot-Tha

We got to Mt Coot-Tha at about 2:30pm. The planetarium closed at 4pm so we decided to check it out first!

Inside the planetarium

We spent about an hour inside and learned about our solar system. I find it super fascinating so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

After the planetarium we did a little loop that was set up for self guided tours. We took about 2 hours to go around the loop and saw a bunch of cool plants. They had a Japanese garden, cactus garden, fern garden, rainforest area, and a bunch more! I’m surprised by the variety of plants that are able to even grow here.

A cool looking cactus tree, no idea what it’s called

Jake couldn’t contain his smiles

The Japanese garden

Walking on the path

A big ass tree that is probably older than all of us combined

There was a ton of spiders as well that were pretty large. Jake was not a big fan of them and didn’t want to go close.

One of the spiders we saw. It’s called a golden orb weaving spider because it has a yellow silk web that’s super strong.

Now we’re heading back to our place to make food because we’re getting quite hungry!

99
Fortitude Valley

Today was Scotts birthday!! In the morning Scott and I watched 2 episodes of Game of Thrones while the other guys hung around. We decided to get an early-ish drink on so at about 1pm Scott and I walked to a liquor store nearby to get a 2 boxes of wine for all of us to share. We then played some drinking games and chatted for quite awhile until about 8pm when we decided to head out. We went to Fortitude Valley which is the main district where vars and clubs are. We didn’t have any big plans in mind so we hopped around to whatever caught our eye.

The guys in one of the bars

We went to a total of 3 spots for a drink. The first place had pitchers for $15 which is probably the most reasonable place we have found all trip. We then went to a bar where beers were about $9.50. We only stayed for one then went to McDonalds for an ice cream break. Afterwards we went to an Irish bar and I got a guinness and Devon and Scott got a baby guinness which was a shot they had heard about. They said it was awesome and I’ll take their word for it.

Jake and Scott in one of the alley ways of Fortitude Valley

We didn’t have a super late night and just got back to our Airbnb at about 1am. We are moving Airbnbs tomorrow to one that’s about 300m from where we are because the one we are at didn’t have availability for our full time in Brisbane. That said we have to wake up and check out by 11am!

100
Starbucks South Brisbane

We packed up this morning and we have to wait about 2 hours before we can check in to our new Airbnb which isn’t too far!

Jake and Dev all packed up and ready to go

Since we have some time to kill we went to a Starbucks nearby so we could take our bags off of our backs.

Chilling in Starbucks

Devon and Jake are going to a little music festival called Laneway today and Scott and I are staying back because we weren’t super keen on it. Instead we might just watch some Game of Thrones, drink the rest of our wine, and walk around the city near us after Dev and Jake head off.

101
30 Boundary St

We just checked in to our new Airbnb where we’ll be for the next 2 nights! We decided we’re liking Brisbane so much that we’re going to stay here for another 2 nights afterwards. We’re going to have to move Airbnbs but it isn’t too big of a hassle.

Big ol thumbs ups!

Our view from the balcony

We have a rooftop pool on the 32nd floor of this building which is super sweet! Scott and I are going to check it out when Devon and Jake head off to their music festival and I’ll make sure to take some pictures!

102
30 Boundary St

The sun was starting to set so Scott and I went to the roof to go to the pool and see the sunset \240Turns out there’s only a hot tub on the roof but it’s still very cool. There’s a little barbecue area which could be pretty fun but I’m not sure if we have enough time to do that.

The view out of our balcony when the sun was beginning to set

A view of the sunset from the 32nd floor

There was a pool but it was down on the 7th floor, so Scott and I made our way down there.

The view of the sunset from the pool deck on the 7th floor

Scott and I are going to go to the grocery store for a couple snacks then watch some Game of Thrones while we wait for Jake and Devon to get back from the music festival.

Tomorrow we’re going to Moreton Island for a long day trip. We have to get up at 6am and be at the port at 7am. On the island we’ll be kayaking in transparent kayaks, sand tobogganing, and more! It should be a fun day and I’ll make sure to take lots of pictures.

103
Port of Brisbane

We made it to the ferry to Moreton Island! We didn’t have much wiggle room for time so we had to pay $70 for our Uber ride, but at least we made it.

Ready for our trip!

We’re going to start off snorkeling which will be the first time we have snorkeedl on this trip. It’s about an hour and 15 minute ride to the island and we spend a good 8-10 hours there.

104
Moreton Island

We just finished our little tour around Moreton Island!

Arriving on Moreton Island

When we got there we walked around a little bit but got right into it.

Walking to our base camp area

We were in the group that started off with snorkeling which was a ton of fun! We got wetsuits and gloves because we were snorkeling around intentionally sunk ships that fish lived in. There was a bunch of barnacle on the ships so if we didn’t have a layer and the current pushed us into it, it would have probably cut us.

The boys putting on their wetsuits

Plus a selfie in my wetsuit!

Jake and I with more of our gear on

Scott and Devon couldn’t wait to get in the water

We snorkeled around for about 45 minutes to an hour. The current was really blowing one way so we got towed by a jet ski to the far end and just coasted along with the fish. There were so many fish swimming around in a bunch of places. There had to be at least 30-40 in your vision pretty much at all times.

Devon and Scott after the snorkel

Once we finished snorkeling we went for a kayak in the transparent kayak in the same area we snorkeled. It wasn’t as fun as snorkeling especially since we had already seen most of the area.

Jake and I were kayaking together and Scott and Devon went together. Jake and I together weigh at least 40 pounds heavier than Scott and Devon so our kayak was quite a bit deeper in the water. Because of that when a wave came a bunch of water got in our kayak and we ended up filling up with water then sinking. Someone on a jetski had to come help us flip the kayak and get all the water out. It was all pretty funny and Jake and I found it amusing.

After kayaking we had lunch and they provided wraps that you could build yourself with various proteins and vegetables.

After eating we took a bus ride to the desert/sand dune area of the island. There’s no roads on the island because it’s all made of sand so the bus was super bumpy and ended up getting stuck for about 15 minutes, which ate into our time sand tobogganing.

The desert

They had sand toboggans which were basically just a plywood sheet with a slippery side and a grippier side. The sand was pretty hot but it was bearable. It said we could go up to 70km/hr sand tobogganing but we probably went no faster than 25km/hr so it was a little underwhelming.

A side view of the dune we slid down

A front view of the dune hill

We were in a bit of a rush to get back to the ferry because it leaves at 2:30pm but when we got back to the bus we found out it had a flat tire, so now they’re in the process of fixing it.

The flat tire on the bus

We aren’t going to catch our ferry at 2:30 so instead we have to catch the one at 6pm. They have a spare tire but it will probably take another hour to get it fixed so we can head out. When we get back to the main beach we might just jump in the water and hang out. We’re getting a little hungry so we’re hoping they have some extra food for us. We’re going to end up getting back to our Airbnb at about 9pm at this rate and we’re probably just going to head right to bed.

105
30 Boundary St

After getting back to the main beach we still had about an hour and a half to kill before the ferry came so we laid down for a bit then went into the water to throw a ball around.

The boys in the water

Selfie with Scott!!

We just got onto the ferry and are on our way back to the mainland! We should arrive at about 8:30pm

106
30 Boundary St

We made it back to the Airbnb and we’re all super gassed. We’re probably just each going to take a shower then head to bed and call it an early night. We did a random list generator to see what order we would shower in and I got first, big win!

Post shower thumbs up

Tomorrow we switch Airbnb’s again to another place in Brisbane because we decided to extend our stay here by another 2 days.

107
Mt. Gravatt Mini Golf & FootGolf

We had to move Airbnbs today and couldn’t check in to the new place until 3pm, so we called a mini golf/foot golf place that was nearby and asked if we could store our bags while we played. They agreed which was super nice so we made our way out there.

It was an unreal deal to play. They had two minigolf courses and one 9 hole foot golf course. It was $12 to play one course and $5 additional to play another course. In total we played 18 holes of foot golf and both mini golf courses and he only charged us for 3 rounds, so it was $22 each!

Scott Dev and Jake on the first gold

We had a fun little money match and the teams were me and Jake vs Devon and Scott. Jake and I came out on top and won $10!

Hanging out at a bench

After our 2 rounds of foot golf we went and hung out in the shade and got some drinks. We went on to play minigolf for $5 and the teams were Scott and me against Jake and Devon. Scott and I won by a decent margin so Devon had a tough day.

We played the final course and Devon was feeling a little tired so he just went back and hung out at the picnic bench. Scott, Jake and I played the last course for $5 and Scott won by one stroke.

We ended up passing about 4 hours at the mini golf and foot golf place, so afterwards we got an Uber to our Airbnb. It’s now 2:40pm so we’re just going to wait in the lobby until we can check in. Afterwards we are probably going to relax for a bit, grab some groceries, and watch a movie.

108
62 Cordelia St

Today we had a super chill day and just stayed inside. We caught up on sleep, did laundry, and lounged around the whole day. Because of that I don’t have many photos or many updates but the sunset was pretty nice so I took a picture of that!

The sunset

There was a church obstructing a bit of the view but it was a cool looking building. Tomorrow we bus to Sunshine Coast at 9:30am where we’ll be for the next 4 nights!

109
62 Cordelia St

Just finished cleaning up our Airbnb and we’re on our way to the bus to Maroochydore (in Sunshine Coast).

On the move!

We can’t check in until 3pm yet again so we’re going to have some time to kill. We might go to the beach with our bags or go to a bar to watch the Lakers game because Lebron James might beat the all-time points record today.

110
42 Fourth Ave, Maroochydore QLD 4558, Australia

We’re all checked in to our new Airbnb! The host let us check in early because it was ready before 3pm which was very nice.

Scott and Jake loungin on the couch

We’re going to watch the Lakers game now then probably go for a little grocery run!

111
Maroochydore Beach

Scott and I went to the grocery store this morning to get a bit of food. After eating we decided to go hit the beach nearby. It was pretty overcast out but there were pockets of sun every now and then.

Loungin on the beach

None of us swam in the water but we are going to head back to the Airbnb and go in the pool there to get the sand off.

112
Maroochy Squash Courts

We decided to hit the squash courts because we didn’t know what else to do today! Jake, Devon and Scott have never played before so I had to teach them the rules, but they caught on super quick.

Devon and Jake in the middle of a tight match

We booked the court for 2 hours and by the end of it we were all super tired. We just got back to our Airbnb and are going to shower and make food! Afterwards we’ll probably watch a movie and call it a night.

113
Sunshine Plaza

I decided to do laundry today because I was running low on clothes! While I waited for it I lounged around and we all had a laid back morning. When my laundry finished at around 1pm, Jake and I went to a little mall that was a 15 minute walk away to look around and get out of the house.

Jake has been getting himself a little collection of postcards so we were also hunting around for one of them and they’re pretty hard to find.

Jake with his pickaxe and sword

In the mall there was a big tree set up for Valentine’s day and a bunch of people wrote little love letters and tied them to the tree. Jake and I saw one written by a girl admitting to him that she has had a crush on a boy for 6 months if he ever found the note, which was pretty funny.

The Valentine’s day tree

We’ve decided that since we’re under budget today we’re going to go out and try a restaurant that was recommended by our Airbnb host!

114
All' Antica Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria

We ended up going to an Italian restaurant called All’ Antica! Me and Scott got a pizza, Devon got lasagna, and Jake got a risotto! The pizza I got had lamb on it, which is a rare order considering I’ve had lamb maybe twice in my life.

Right when the food came

My pizza!

It all tasted pretty good but it was nothing to rave about. It was nice getting out and having a more decent meal that wasn’t something we were cooking for ourselves in a budget.

Before our main course came, Jake and Devon decided to splurge and get an appetizer. Jake was feeling extra good so he also decided to get a dessert as well. I thought why the hell not and joined him too.

The desserts! Yummy.

Tomorrow we’re going to do a high ropes course not far from here. Because of that we’re probably all going to wind down and head to bed when we get back to the Airbnb!

115
Next Level - High Ropes Adventure Park

We just got back from the high ropes course and it was a ton of fun! We weren’t allowed to bring our phones onto the course so I don’t have any big action pictures but here are some from before and after!

Devon was nervous but excited!

Jake all harnessed up

The nerves went away and Devon couldn’t contain himself

Two thumbs up for safety

Peace on earth

We all did an intermediate one and a hard one. The circuits consisted of 23 obstacles that ended in a zip line back to the start. Some were pretty difficult but it was a lot of fun!

Here’s a little view from the starting tower of the courses

We were harnessed in the entire time and even if you slipped on an obstacle you wouldn’t fall very far. That said I slipped on one of the obstacles on the harder course and hit my shin pretty hard. It honestly didn’t hurt that bad but I was bleeding pretty aggressively.

Nice and bloody

After I cleaned it up it looked better but it’s a pretty good one

After we finished the hard course there was an expert one we decided to try as well. Devon was a little tired so he sat it out but Scott, Jake and I continued on to try it.

Before starting it I went down to the lobby area and got all cleaned up and put some bandaids on.

I went through first and by the end of the course I had started bleeding again so I ran off downstairs to clean up while Jake and Scott finished. I cleaned up quickly and ran to the viewing area so I managed to get a last second action shot of Scott struggling on the final obstacle of the expert course.

Almost at the end!

We were about 60 feet up at our highest point (which was on the expert course). The expert course only had 8 obstacles and it was much more tiring than any of the other courses.

Even though we’re all sore and tired and I’m a little banged up we all had a ton of fun and now we’re back at the Airbnb and going to shower, eat, and relax for a little while.

116
53 Sixth Ave

Just in the process of switching Airbnbs so we stopped in at a cafe because we have to kill 2 hours.

Scott and Devon got a coffee

We’re going to check into our Airbnb in about 15 minutes then probably take a little swim in the pool. I’m trying to stay out of the water while my cut heals so I’m just gonna hang and stay dry.

117
53 Sixth Ave

We ended up having a laid back day today. When we got to our Airbnb, Scott, Jake and Devon went to the pool for a bit but I stayed back. I realized my shin was bleeding a tiny bit through the bandaid from throwing around a football with Jake for a bit, so I’m now trying to limit my physical activity.

My bandaged up leg.

I haven’t taken the bandage off yet to re-evaluate the damage since I only have smaller bandaids but I’m probably going to hunt for some Steri-strips tomorrow.

After they got back from the pool they ran to the grocery store, we made food and then watched some New Girl. After finishing our food we had another round of Canasta, this time it was me and Devon against Scott and Jake. Scott and Jake took the cake, meaning Scott is 3-0 in Canasta and the rest of us are all 1-2.

Devon thinking hard about his next move

Tomorrow we head to Noosa but before we do that we’re going to watch the Super Bowl in the morning and maybe have a beer or two!

118
The Sands Tavern

We ended up going to The Sands Tavern because they said they were showing the Super Bowl starting right at 9:30am. When we got to the front doors they were locked but a staff member came at about 9:40am and opened the doors. American football isn’t too popular down here so I think she wasn’t aware of the game being on.

The TVs weren’t the best quality but beggars can’t be choosers

We all ordered a beer at 10am and Scott Jake and I got food at around noon. Devon wasn’t too hungry so he decided to hold off and get some food after the game.

Cheers to sports

The refs were really good for the whole game but the holding penalty at the end to give Kansas City first down was ridiculous. Philadelphia got robbed.

Now that the game is done we’re going to have walk over to the McDonalds near our bus stop to charge our phones and stay in an air conditioned building.

On the walk over I found some steri strips, but they aren’t sticking too well. Once we get to Noosa I may stop in at a walk-in clinic to see if I can get stitches because I want to heal before I swim around a bunch. We have an island excursion in about a week so hopefully it’s a little more under control by then.

119
Greyhound Bus Stop Maroochydore

We’re now at the bus stop waiting to head to Noosa! It’s only about a 40 minute bus ride so it’ll go by quick.

Waiting at the bus stop

120
152 Moorindil St

Made it to our Airbnb!

Getting settled in

Scott with his beans

I’m going to call the nurse hotline for some advice on what to do with my shin and then we might get some groceries!

121
Noosa Hospital, Noosaville QLD 4566, Australia

A little injury update:

I’ve applied steri strips a lot better and called a nurse hot line who recommended I see a GP to be safe.

It looks like it’s getting better but it’s hard to tell

The only GP that I can see right now is at a private hospital that needs a $400 upfront fee that may not be covered by insurance. I tried calling the hotline that my insurance company provided and said was 24 hours but it was forwarded to an after hours answering service that said the service I was looking for wasn’t available and to call back tomorrow morning. Pretty annoying so it’s a good thing I’m not dying right now. There are some clinics that open tomorrow that I’m going to check out and hopefully they will be public and able to help me out better.

122
Noosa Heads Main Beach

Today we decided to go to the beach for a little bit and check it out! There was a little strip of road with markets nearby so we walked down it and Jake found his postcard from Noosa.

The boys at the beach

None of us brought our swimwear because we didn’t feel like swimming today. We kind of wish we did because the water was so warm but we’re probably going to have a lot of beach days in the next week.

The Noosa River

Our Uber driver gave us some random facts on the way to the beach and apparently the Noosa River is one of 3 rivers in the world that have a sand base rather than a dirt base so the water is nice and blue/clear all the way up the river.

No spear fishing allowed here

Since we didn’t have any formal plans we stopped at a little cafe for a coffee and saw what there was to do around here on Google. We decided that we’re going to go lawn bowling because none of us have tried it before (other than Scott who played one game).

123
Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club

We got to lawn bowling at about 3pm and it was only $15 to play. We had to learn the rules first so we watched a quick youtube video. Right after the video someone that was bowling nearby came over and explained it and clarified some of the rules.

Getting ready to bowl

The rules were pretty similar to curling and bocce so we caught on pretty quick. We decided to play a little 2v2 with random teams and it was me and Scott vs Jake and Devon. We originally planned on playing to 21 but the rain started coming down a bit when it was 10-9 for me and Scott. Jake and Devon tied it up 10-10 and we said next point wins. After shooting 2/4 balls each some staff came out and told us to come inside because of the lightning so we each took one more shot and Scott and I pulled away with the victory 11-10 with a little asterisk because we couldn’t have our 4th shot.

Winner winner chicken dinner

Now we’re heading home and gonna make food since we haven’t eaten since this morning!

124
Noosa National Park

Today we went to Noosa National Park for a little walk! We left at about 3pm because we wanted to be there for the sunset. The park was right by Noosa Heads Beach, which is where we were yesterday!

The first thing we did when we got there was check the map to see which route we wanted to walk.

Checking the map

We ended up doing the coastal walk and looping back through the forest. There was supposedly koalas in the area but we didn’t see any! We still have yet to see a koala or kangaroo but hopefully soon.

A view of the beach on the walk

The ocean

Devon on the forest path

The sun was coming down on our way back but we still had about 45 minutes to kill until the sunset.

Another beach view with the sun coming down

It looked a little cloudy and we weren’t sure how good of a sunset it would be because the visibility seemed a little low. We ended up deciding that we would just call it and head back to our place because we would see plenty of good sunsets on the island trips we are doing.

It would have been nice to stay though because it turned out the sky looked unreal back at our place.

The ombré sky

We’re now gonna cook some food and have a pretty early night because we are going to go surfing tomorrow at around 10am.

125
Noosa Golf Club

We decided to golf today instead of surf because there are hardly any tee times tomorrow. It was only $75 for 18 and club rental which isn’t too bad. We were all using lower quality clubs than we have back home but it was an equal playing field at least.

At the first tee box ready to go

We played a little 2v2 it was me and Devon against Jake and Scott. Devon and I won by 3 holes on the front 9 so we decided to switch it up and play me and Scott vs Jake and Devon. Jake and Devon won by one hole by the end so it was a lot closer!

We saw our first kangaroo!

We’re all super tired after being in the sun for 4.5 hours so we’re going to head back to our Airbnb and make some food and possibly take a nap. Tomorrow will be reserved for a beach and surf day!

All wiped out after golf

126
152 Moorindil St, Tewantin QLD 4565, Australia

After napping and eating food we played a little bit of cards and chatted! This one was just for fun so nothing was on the line.

Playing cards

Now we’re just going to watch a show then head to bed. Tomorrow we head off to a hostel called Nomads for one night then we head to Fraser Island the day after, which has been a huge recommendation from people. While we’re between places tomorrow we’re going to go surfing and bring our bags to the beach.

127
152 Moorindil St, Tewantin QLD 4565, Australia

We’re all packed up once again and hitting the road to another place! We are staying in a mixed 16 person dorm for the night so that should be interesting.

Waiting for our uber

While we were waiting a bird pooped on my bag so hopefully I have good luck because that sucks.

128
Noosa Heads Main Beach

The waves weren’t very good when we got to the beach so we decided to have a little swim/beach day and re-evaluate in a couple hours.

The sand was pretty compact and it was really good for playing football. We drew out some lines and played a little game.

Playing football

After football we went over to another beach that was nearby that had a couple sand bars.

The unnamed beach we went to

The tide was pretty low so we were able to walk pretty far. There were little puddles of water on the shoreline that felt like a hot tub because the sun heated them up so much.

We got quite a bit of sun and the waves are still pretty bad for surfing so we are going to stay in the shade and go get some food now.

129
Grill'd Noosa

We ended up going to Grill’d again because it was so good the first time. We all got different burgers to spice things up!

My burger

Everyone was so happy!

Now that we are all full we’re going to check in to our hostel because it’s after 3pm.

130
Nomads Noosa Youth Resort

We’re all checked in to our hostel now! We played a little bit of beach volleyball when we first got here because there was a court right by our place.

The beach volleyball court

Afterwards we showered up and had to head to an information session for our Fraser Island tour tomorrow. We have to be in the lobby at 6:30am tomorrow morning so if we want breakfast we might have to get up at 5:30am or earlier.

Devon and I with our headphones at the information session

The sky after the info session

We got free drink tickets when we checked in today and it was redeemable between 7-8pm so we’re now grabbing our drank and chatting a bit!

Jake lost his ticket so he got a burger and drink deal instead

131
15 Goondi St, Rainbow Beach QLD 4581, Australia

We’re all ready to go to Fraser Island! There’s about 30 of us going in a group and they’re all around our age. We might not have reception on the island so I’ll continue to update the travel journal but it might not upload if there’s no internet connection.

We come back on Monday at 6pm our time.

The group we’ll be driving around with

We’ll be driving on sand with a right hand drive so it’ll be a whole new experience! I drove from our hostel to the place where we leave to the island and it was pretty odd. Going around round abouts and signalling was the weirdest part but I got the hang of it pretty quickly.

132
Lake Mckenzie (Boorangoora)

We got on to Fraser Island successfully and I continued to drive first on the sand! We have been chatting as a car and getting along really well! The tour we’re doing is called a tag along. We are 1 of 4 cars in a little convoy and we’re all camping in a large group. There is one tour guide in the front car that is going to show us around the island. There’s 8 people in each car so there’s 32 of us in total!

We were car 3 in the convoy

The first thing we did when we got there was go to a small village for breakfast. There isn’t a lot of infrastructure on the island because it’s pretty much all sand.

The guys in the village during lunchtime

After lunch we went back to the car and drove to Lake McKenzie, which is a freshwater lake that’s only source was rain that filled it up.

In the backseat now!

We decided to switch up drivers for Lake McKenzie and Devon was willing to give it a shot!

Everyone in the car when Devon was driving

It takes quite awhile to get from place to place but it’s a fairly fun ride because we don’t always drive on sand.

Fraser Island was the first freshwater body of water that we’ve swam in since being out of Canada (other than the odd pool) so it was super refreshing. The water was really clear and nice looking.

We got in the water with our car and we threw a ball around. We invited anyone who wanted to play and ended up having about 13 people playing!

Lake McKenzie

We’re now gonna head to our campsite where we’ll be for the next 2 nights. We’re switching up the driver again and Scott’s gonna get a go this time.

133
Talinga, Esplanade, Eurong QLD 4581, Australia

We switched it up once more and this time Jake drove!

We all felt safe in Jakes hands

There are wild dingos on the island that usually travel in packs and look like a mid sized dog but they’re evil. Apparently they’re very smart and will try to separate you from a group and gang up on you. When we’re walking around outside our campsite we’re supposed to walk in group of at least 4 so that the dingos don’t even approach us.

Dingo spotted!

The sun started going down but the sunset was on the other side of the island so we didn’t get a very good view. That said, the sky still looked really cool.

The pretty sky on our side of the island

Our tour guide said it would be an easy 40 minute drive and it ended up being like an hour and a half, but we got there safe and sound.

134
The Pinnacles

After we got all settled in we met up in the central tent area to eat. The tour guide asked for 3 volunteers to help him out and me and two other people from car 3 were sitting close to the cooking station so we decided to help out to keep busy.

Car 3 cooking up a storm

It wasn’t very strenuous work. My job was to watch over a bunch of sausages and flip them accordingly. I self appointed myself as grill master for the night.

A whole lot of sausages

An added benefit was that we got to eat first as well. Everyone was super hungry because we hadn’t eaten since about 1:30pm.

A gourmet meal

After we ate and had a couple drinks we thought it would be best to call it an early night. Scott and Jake went to bed and Devon and I did a quick trip to the beach nearby with two others from our campsite and we made sure to keep our eyes peeled for dingos! The stars were super visible because there isn’t a lot of light pollution on the island. Right after Devon and I also went to bed.

We’re going to save the late night drinking for tomorrow because we will have more time at the campsite in the evening.

We have to be up at around 7:00am tomorrow. We’re sleeping in tents and it’s quite warm so I’m sure we’ll be up fairly early anyways.

135
Champagne Pools

We woke up at 8:30am and started our day right away. Scott and I skipped breakfast to get a little extra sleep and Devon and Jake woke up to get the food. We switched up the driver once again and Letty (One of the girls from Netherlands) drove this time around. We drove to the champagne pools which were little pools along the ocean side, but first we stopped at a little campground to fill up our water jugs. We had to fill about 25x20L jugs so it took a little while. Afterwards we continued driving to the pools.

Car 3 hanging out at the campground

The drive to the champagne pools wasn’t very far after the campground so it only took about 10 minutes.

Walking on the boardwalk towards the champagne pools

Another view of the ocean from the boardwalk

We hung around for a couple hours and now we’re going to head back to the campsite to drop off our water jugs.

136
Eli Creek

After spending a bit of time at the champagne pools and dropping off the water we went to a little stream where we could float on tubes that were provided for us or just hang around.

Just after we got to our destination

The stream we could float on

There we’re about 8 floaties between all of us so we took turns. The walk to the start of the stream only took about an 2 minutes so we rotated fairly quickly. The water was shallow enough that we could walk along so we let the girls go first and followed behind them.

The girls from car 3 going down the stream

The guys following along

After the first trip, Jake and I went for a little ride.

Jake couldn’t contain his happiness!

Once we were done with the stream we went back to the car and hung around for a bit. There was a ball so a couple of us kicked it around. While we were kicking the ball around a dingo was wandering around our cars. It was only one so it wasn’t a big deal.

The dingo we spotted

While we were near the stream we set up a net between two of the cars and played a little volleyball. Not many people in the group played volleyball so it was a little chaotic but it was still entertaining. We’re now heading back to the camp for dinner and to socialize!

137
The Pinnacles

We drank a little last night and socialized with a lot more people. There are a bunch of really nice people on this trip and one of the girls from our car is going to be the same island trip to Whitsunday in a few days.

We went to bed at about midnight last night and about 12 of us woke up at 5am to see the sunrise. I was still a little drunk when I woke up because I didn’t have a very long sleep but it passed fairly quickly and turned into just being tired.

The sunrise on the coast

The sunrise didn’t last too long because there were a lot of clouds but we got a couple decent pictures. I was the only one out of the guys that got up because they all wanted to sleep.

The lot of us at the beach

We hung around the beach for a little longer and I decided to build a little sand castle for fun. Another guy joined along and we had a little competition for fun. We both made pretty good sand castles so we called it a tie.

Me and Vincent from France building our sand castles

After the sunrise we went back to the camp for breakfast. It was about 6:00am and I was debating going back to bed for a bit but decided to just have some coffee and tough it out. We had some pancakes, fruit, toast and cereal for breakfast.

Just before heading out we saw a lizard climbing a tree!

Spot the lizard

We’re going for a little hike now and we’re going to have lunch then head off the island at about 3pm.

138
Lake Wabby

On our way to the hike we stopped at a shipwreck near the shore. It was beached a long time ago and It was used for target practice during world war 2.

Hangin by the shipwreck

A group photo of everyone on our tour

Car 3 also got a group picture

We took a picture by our car as well!

We got to the hike location not too long after. I got the chance to drive again on some rougher terrain which was fun. The hike was about 2.5km in sand but it wasn’t too bad.

Walking on the trail

At the end of the trail it opened up into big sand dunes

The sand was so soft

We were excited to be done the hike and go into the water

The lake was at the bottom of a steep hill

The water was pretty warm and it was freshwater like the last lake.

Devon and Scott in the lake

We’re now heading back to the little town to have our lunch before heading to the ferry. We’re all quite tired and excited to get back to the hostel and shower/relax.

139
Nomads Noosa Youth Resort

We’re all checked out of our hostel. They let us store our bags there for free which was nice. We have about 5 hours to kill before our bus leaves. It’s a little rainy so we might not go to the beach. We might just end up going to get some food and chill around for 3 hours. Right now we’re trying to find a portable charger for Jake!

Walking around

140
Greyhound Bus Stop Noosa

We made it to our bus! We have a 17 hour ride ahead of us and we’re stopping every couple hours. We’re bussing overnight and we’re scheduled to get in at about 10am so hopefully we can get some sleep. The chairs recline a little bit more than airplane seats and there’s a bit more leg room too so it isn’t too uncomfortable.

Scott and I are not excited for the bus ride

141
Greyhound Bus Stop Traveston

We stopped for a little stretch break and for a bite to eat. While I was getting food, Scott and Devon decided to sit down and take some massage chairs for a spin

Scott was so calm for once

142
Greyhound Bus Stop Airlie Beach

We finished our 17 hour bus ride! It honestly wasn’t that bad at all and went by fairly quickly. We all think we could have done another 5 hours or so if we had to.

Off the bus!

It’s raining a little bit and the visibility is quite low right now. We had 2 friends from Fraser Island on the same bus as us and one of them is going skydiving now.

143
Nomads Airlie Beach Hostel

We’re all checked into our Airbnb now! We leave to Whitsunday Island tomorrow at 11am so we have today to relax and get some water/alcohol for the trip.

Walking to our room

Our reservation showed that we had an 8 person mixed dorm but when we got to the hostel they had a 4 person dorm for us so we have our own private room with an ensuite which is super nice. We aren’t going to have to worry about locking our stuff up at all which is an added bonus.

Relaxing in our beds

After a little down time we’re probably going to check out the city a little bit.

144
D'viet House

After a little rest from the bus ride we went out for a little food. The town we’re in is quite small and touristy so there’s only one main strip of shops. The sun was starting to come down so the sky looked pretty cool.

A cool mural

The main strip

We decided to go to for Vietnamese food and it was delicious! Scott and Jake got pho and Devon and I got different noodle salads. I think my meal was the best food I’ve had in Australia so far, it was super tasty and felt pretty healthy.

The waitress was nice enough to come over and ask if we wanted our picture taken when she saw me taking one!

Since we’re doing the Whitsunday boating tomorrow we’re probably going to have an early night. We might play some cards or just lounge around in our beds for a couple hours.

145
Coral Sea Marina

We’re on our way to leave for Whitsunday Island! It might be the same as the other island where I won’t have service for the next 2 days so the update might be a little delayed.

Walking to the meeting point

We’re on the boat with Bodine from the Netherlands who was on our Fraser Island trip in our car!

At the meeting point

i’ll make sure to take a lot of photos!

146
The Rocks

We had a blast today! We found the catamaran to be a lot more social than on Fraser Island because we were all one big group rather than separated by cars.

The group all together

It was raining quite a bit sporadically so we all stayed under the tarp together. When we got our beds, Scott and I were originally in a bunk to ourselves but we got the short end of the stick and have to sleep with 3 guys to one bed that’s a bit smaller than a queen sized bed. Devon and Jake got their own private little room so they are living in luxury.

The bed for the 3 of us. We’re with another guy from Ireland.

The main area under the catamaran

After boating to one of our destinations we snorkeled around a bit. Because of the rain the visibility in the water was pretty bad but it was still fun to swim around. We got thin wetsuits that were just there for protection against any stingrays that might come our way (but we didn’t see any).

The boys getting ready to snorkel

We bought an underwater case to try out but again the visibility wasn’t very good so you can’t see much going on underwater.

Devon underwater

Snorkel selfie

After snorkeling we boated off to another place where we would sleep for the night. Once we got there we had some food and drinks and socialized a bunch! I learned a bit of dutch from two girls from the Netherlands for fun.

The sunset was pretty cool but I just caught the tail end of it.

The dark sunset

We continued drinking and talking into the night time and we’re out in the middle of nowhere so we can be as loud as we want (unless other people on the boat are trying to sleep).

The group of us listening to music and talking at night

Tomorrow we’ll be going to the famous Whitehaven beach which is known for having sand that’s so pure you can polish your teeth and jewellery with it!

147
Whitehaven Beach - Northern End

We woke up at about 6:30am today for breakfast and headed off to Whitsunday Island.

Selfie in our little boat ride from our ship to the island

It felt quite nice to stand on solid land after being in a boat for pretty close to 20 hours. We had a 10 minute walk to a lookout over Whitehaven Beach and some surrounding beaches.

I’m our hike

During the short walk I almost ran into a spiderweb accidentally. It was definitely not a small spider..,

iSpy the spider

It was low tide when we got to the beach so you could see a lot of sand bars rather than just water.

148
Mantaray Bay

After getting back to the boat and sailing elsewhere we went snorkeling!

The cove we ended up in

I kept looking at the water and was amazed that it was so blue every time!

Another view of the cove

I have a few video clips that I have to go through and will in the future but here’s a small one of the first snorkel we did.

The snorkel video

After seeing a bit, we got back on the ship and went to another snorkel location. The second location wasn’t too special but one small group of people saw a turtle! We never saw one because we went back to the catamaran right before they saw it. Once everyone was back on the ship, we sailed back closer to Airlie Beach so that we wouldn’t have to go as far in the morning.

Back on the ship

Hanging around and passing time by socializing while we drove to our next destination

The 4 guys right after sunset

We didn’t really drink tonight and instead listened to music and chatted with a larger group! We’re calling it an earlier night too because we’ve all had a long day.

149
Nomads Airlie Beach Hostel

We got all checked into our place! We got off the boat at about 9am and just walked back to the hostel. We could check in early but we wouldn’t have access to our room because it was getting cleaned so we had to kill a couple hours. We ended up just hanging out in the lounge for quite some time and our room was ready early so we moved all of our bags at about 2pm. We got a private room for 4 again which is awesome.

Our room for the next 2 nights

Now we’re going to lounge around and charging our things up for a little while.

150
Airlie Beach Lagoon

Scott and I decided to head to the lagoon nearby (which was actually just a pool) to meet up with some friends. Jake and Devon hung back to relax and recharge more.

The view of the ocean from the lagoon

The lagoon pool

We just chatted and hung out on the grass nearby. We didn’t end up going swimming at all though. After an hour or two, a couple of us wanted to play volleyball so we headed to the courts at our hostel.

We rounded up about 8-10 of us to play but nobody here really knows how to play so it’s mostly just chaos.

Scott and I are now showering up then we’re going to meet up with Jake and Devon who went out for food. We might also get a couple drinks because there’s an after party with our catamaran group at a bar!

151
D'viet House

After showering up we messaged a couple of the friends and saw what they were up to. One didn’t have any plans so we asked if she wanted to come for to the Vietnamese place that we went a couple days ago because it was so good!

Cheers to friendship

Her name is Marlene and she’s from Germany! She’s 25 years old and she’s already a surgeon!! She was on our trip to Fraser Island and is staying at the hostel that we’re currently at.

After eating we’re going to get a couple drinks with some other friends including Devon and Jake!

152
Midge Point

Apologies for the delay but we wanted to keep it a surprise until we had photos! For those of you that don’t know, Jake and I went skydiving today!! Devon and Scott stayed back which is totally understandable and they just hung around the lagoon instead.

As we were leaving we got a picture before the nerves set in

It was about a 10 minute walk to the meeting point then a 40 minute drive to the place we would be skydiving. Once we got there we didn’t have to wait too long before the ball got rolling. We didn’t have to do much of a brief because we didn’t really have to do anything during the dive except when we left the plane and when we were landing.

Me with my instructor Anthony just before getting in the plane

I’ll post some videos at the bottom but here are some key pictures first!

Just before jumping out of the plane

And I’m freeeeeee.. free falling

My instructor had over 4000 dives so he was a little more used to it than I was..

A bit of the view after the parachute was out

It all went by so quickly, I have no idea how long we were free falling or parachuting but it was probably around 45 seconds and 5 minutes respectively.

They even let us fly around the parachute for a bit

We had a smooth landing on the beach

After landing, both my arms and legs were tingly probably due to the circulation being a little cut off from the harness but it went away fairly quickly!!

Jake and I in the bus after we both landed

After being in the bus it felt surreal what just happened. We would talk about it on and off on the way back to our hostel and just realize that we jumped out of a plane and fell 15000 feet. Pretty crazy stuff.

We thought we deserved a meal afterwards so we got some Subway back in town.

Us eating our Subway

Now here are some videos that I have cropped to show the highlights!!

A little hello before getting into the plane

Jumping out of the plane

The first couple seconds of free falling definitely made me feel butterflies in the stomach but after like 2-3 seconds it just felt like you were staring at the ground with a very intense fan in your face.

Once the parachute was pulled as well it was almost like you were sitting in the sky, it really never felt that scary in my opinion! The most nerve-racking part was jumping out of the plane but again it happened so fast that it wasn’t too bad.

Flying around with the parachute

Our smooth landing on the beach

It was truly quite the experience and it’s possible I would do it again. We both had a lot of fun and at no point did I feel like I wasn’t safe. It all went by super quickly so I hardly even had time to worry about anything.

153
Nomads Airlie Beach Hostel

After skydiving Jake and I both felt a little tired, probably because of the huge rush of adrenaline that we had. After napping for a bit I joined Scott and Devon and we went to the lagoon for about an hour or so. We met up with 2 friends from Germany (David and Marlene) and just hung around and chatted.

Afterwards we decided to head back to our rooms and relax for a little while longer then play some volleyball at the court right by our room!

Scott, Devon, and Marlene at the cojrt

David and a French girl from his room joined us as well and we had a little 3v3 match for fun! We played from about an hour or so and it was starting to get dark so we stopped playing and went and made some food.

After eating we invited a few people back to our room to hangout. David and Marlene came as well as Frankie and Letty who were both on our Fraser Island trip. Frankie is hilarious and has a ton of stories so for a good chunk of the night he was just cracking us up. He speaks english pretty well but because it’s not perfect it makes his story telling that much more funny.

All of us hanging out in the room we were staying in

Unfortunately after the night was over we had to say goodbye to Letty, Marlene and David because we wouldn’t be seeing any of them again! We’ll see Frankie one more time in Cairns though.

154
Greyhound Bus Stop Airlie Beach

We had a bus to catch at 9:50am so we packed up our things and walked to the bus stop.

On our way to the bus stop

Frankie was on our bus so we all walked together. He’s getting off a little early but we’ll be meeting up with him again in the future!

Waiting at the bus stop

We have about a 10 hour bus ride to Cairns which will hopefully go by just as fast as the 17 hour bus ride a couple days ago.

Devon came prepared with a snack

155
Gilligan's

We made it off the bus! It wasn’t too bad this time around as well but I had the seat furthest at the front and the person behind me didn’t have a lot of leg room so I didn’t really recline my seat. Because of that I didn’t have the best sleeps but oh well, we made it.

Walking to our hostel

The hostel we’re staying at is called Gilligan’s and it’s known for being super loud/party like because there’s a pretty large club attached to the hostel. There’s reviews that say the noise goes until 3am and their room vibrates because of the bass from the music. To be safe we looked up Airbnb’s nearby and we found one for $92 a night (so $23 each) starting tomorrow and we just decided to book it because we don’t want to have bad sleeps before scuba diving and going on our crocodile expedition in the next few days. I also have an interview for school coming up and need to have a quiet place for that. That said it doesn’t seem to hectic right now but it is a Monday.

Our room for the next while!

156
Zambrero Cairns Lake Street

Once we woke up we talked more with the roommates that were out pretty late last night. One of the girls is from England but has family from Montreal so she is a Habs fan!

Go Habs Go

We all wanted to grab some food so we went out to a mexican burrito place similar to Mucho Burrito back home.

Eating our burritos

We don’t have anything crazy planned today and I might just use the day to prepare for my school interview.

127 Buchan St, Bungalow QLD 4870, Australia

We’ve check into our Airbnb now and we’re just gonna relax for a bit and do our laundry which has been looong overdue after spending time on Fraser Island and on the catamaran.

As soon as we got here we immediately took our dirty clothes out of our bags and let ‘em vent a bit.

Our home for the next while (with bags galore)

158
127 Buchan St, Bungalow QLD 4870, Australia

We had a pretty quiet night tonight. We got some groceries and took all day to do our laundry since the machine acts as both a washer and an air dryer. There’s a party going on every night at the hostel but we are going scuba diving tomorrow morning so we wanted to make sure we would get a good sleep before that.

While I was at the grocery store I decided to get a sewing kit and try to do a makeshift job of fixing the hole in my shorts that happened quite awhile ago. I hadn’t sewn anything by hand before so I watched a couple youtube videos to learn about it.

My sew job from the inside

From the outside

I actually did a better job than I thought I would. The question is whether or not it is going to hold up at all. I did a little pull test and it seems to be holding together which is good news.

Also a little leg injury update: It’s been healing pretty well, definitely not restricting me from doing anything at this point because it’s sealed off well.

Healing up well

159
Reef Fleet Terminal

Today we’re going on a little ocean cruise and scuba dive! We’re probably going to rent a go pro so that we can get some good footage of us scuba diving which is exciting!

Our itenerary for the day

It’s a full day so we’re gonna be real tired afterwards. We are also going snorkeling while we wait for our scuba dive time (or after our scuba time if it’s the earliest time slot).

Walking to the boat

On the boat as we sail to our destination

We just finished up our day and are now heading back to land!

The first thing we did when we got to our destination was feed some fishies (or watch the workers feed them) for a little bit. They looked very similar to the fish we saw snorkeling on our Whitsunday tour.

Fishies!

Afterwards we went on a little boat with a glass floor. I personally thought it was a lot better than the kayaks with the clear bottom because we could see way more and could buzz around quicker.

The boys on the boat

The glass floor of the boat

A little video of us gliding along to reef

After the boat ride we had a little buffet style lunch then head to the beach for a little snorkel!

I didn’t take my phone snorkeling this time which is too bad. There was a photographer taking photos underwater and they sell the photos but it’s $24 per photo which is just outrageous, so unfortunately we don’t have any footage from snorkeling.

After snorkeling for about 30 minutes it was time for us to scuba dive. Due to safety reasons we couldn’t bring a phone with us because we had to have both hands free which is too bad. We went in pairs of 2 with an instructor so Scott and I went together. When we got back to the boat Devon and Jake were already there so they took their gear off but Scott and I still had ours on so we managed to snap a quick photo.

Post scuba picture

The scuba dive was a ton of fun! I wish it was a little longer but it was still sweet. We found Nemo but didn’t see any turtles or sharks. There was also a ton of cool coral and some giant clams that were about 1-2 meters big. It felt super cool being able to breathe underwater especially when we looked up from the depths. We went about 7 meters deep at our deepest.

The little island that we snorkeled at and started out scuba from

Once we get back to land we’re going to head to our Airbnb and make some food then maybe meet up with some friends!

160
Liquorland Dunwoodys Liquor Barn

After getting back to our hostel and showering up we decided to go out for some trivia and a beer! The trivia was a little different because they gave us a buzzer for ringing in to answer so only one group could get it right. They also had buttons for multiple choice answers on the buzzer so it wasn’t all just first to answer correctly.

The boys focusing

We decided to represent Canada and name our team the Vancouver Canucks. We didn’t do too hot though. We came 8th out of 8 but to be fair they asked quite a few questions that were tailored towards Australians (such as the name of a popular radio host). We did get a couple good answers and Scott, Jake, and I all got a question right from buzzing in which felt good!

Now Jake and Devon are heading back to the Airbnb. We’re getting picked up from the hostel tomorrow morning at 7:10am and Scott and I wanted to sleep in as much as possible so we’re going to be sleeping at the hostel.

161
Gilligan's

Today we’re doing an expedition called Uncle Brian’s Cape Tribulation Tour. It will involve walking through the worlds oldest rain forest alongside the Great Barrier Reef. There’s also a part where we’ll likely see some crocodiles in the wild! It’s a full day because we’re leaving at 7am and getting back at about 7pm.

All in the husband ready to go

I’m not sure if I’ll have good service because it’s about a 1.5 hour drive out of town. If I don’t it might be another flood of updates the next time I get connection.

162
Captain Cook Hwy, Wangetti QLD 4877, Australia

Turns out the drive was a little longer than expected. We got to the Daintree Rainforest (which is on the way to Cape Tribulation) at around 11:30am. On the way we stopped at a couple look outs while our guide sorted out the lunch orders.

The first little lookout along the highway

A view of the coastline at another lookout

Once we got to Daintree we had to take a little car ferry across a river. It only took about 5 minutes to get across and apparently the locals don’t want to build a bridge there because they don’t want police to have easy access. Our tour guide has said the people that live in Daintree/the rainforest are super freelance hippies and huge oddballs.

While driving through the Daintree Ranforest we saw a look of cool thick nature. We stopped at another lookout pretty shortly after the ferry and it was quite the view. Apparently the rainforest is the oldest in the world at approximately 190 million years old.

A view of the rainforest from fairly high up

Another angle in the same spot

Apparently a lot of the fruits on the island are toxic and the indigenous people have figured out that you can leave the fruits in the river and it will wash out the poisons making them safe to eat.

One of the rivers along the rosd

We’re now heading to a little spot to eat our lunch. We’re having burgers and fries which is a nice switch up from having wraps and sandwhiches on all of our excursions.

163
Masons Café

We made it to our spot for lunch and the food was basically ready as soon as we sat down because they had it prepared in advance. Scott and I had a chicken burger and Devon and Jake had a beef burger. Jake was the last to get his food so we let him snack on our fries so he didn’t get too hangry.

Lunch time!

After lunch we went to a little swimming hole for a dip. \240There was a rope swing that everybody was taking turns using.

A little video of the swimming hole

After our dip we went to Cape Tribulation for a little walk around.

Walking through the rainforest

There was some cool scenery on the walk and our instructor was super knowledgeable. He told us quite a bit about the way the indigenous people used plants on our walks.

A little marshy area on our walk

Some big and cool looking trees

Now we’re heading to the area where we might see a couple crocodiles!! I think we’re all getting in a little boat and going down a body of water which should be fun.

164
Crocodile Express Lower Daintree Cruises

We managed to see a couple little crocodiles on our tour!

Selfie in the boat

The rest of our boat

Pictures didn’t really do it justice because it was quite bright out but the nature around was super green and luscious.

The nature with a fun mountain in the background

We saw 3 or 4 crocodiles that were about a foot big and one that was about 2 meters big. One of the smaller crocs is in the photo below, bonus points if you can find it!

Sneaky small croc

We only saw the bigger crocodile in the water and this was the closest we got. Right after taking the picture it ducked under the water but came up a little bit later.

The bigger crocodile

Walking to our bus after the boat

This was the last thing we were doing today and now we have to head back to the hostel. It’s about a 2 hour drive and we’re all pretty tired so we might nap on the way back.

165
127 Buchan St, Bungalow QLD 4870, Australia

We’ve had a super laidback day today. This was our first day where we did hardly anything in quite some time so it was nice to just rest up. I’m starting to feel a little under the weather so I’ve slept about 14 hours today to catch up on sleep. The guys were going to go out and watch a movie but tickets were sold out so they just stayed in instead.

Jake and Scott hanging out

Devon lounging around

I have an interview for UBC physiotherapy tomorrow morning at 7am so I’ve spent a bit of today preparing for it. We have a flight to Adelaide at 10:50am as well so it’s going to bit a hectic morning but the timing works out that I won’t miss the flight.

166
Cairns Airport

I finished my interview and I think it went well! It ended at about 8:40am which worked perfectly because we were planning leaving to the airport at 8:50am. I packed last night so I was ready to go right away.

My makeshift interview set up

I had to do the interview on my phone which wasn’t ideal but I made the most of it. During one of the interview questions the lightbulb in the lamp broke off because of the heat which was a little distracting but I was almost done the question so it wasn’t too problematic. Thankfully the bulb didn’t shatter and it just popped off in one piece.

We’re now at the airport waiting for our flight. It takes off in about 30 minutes and we’re just about to start boarding. It’s about a 3.5 hour flight which I don’t mind cause I’ll be able to sleep a bit more.

Waiting for our flight

167
193 South Rd, Ridleyton SA 5008, Australia

We’ve checked into our Airbnb all smooth! We don’t have much planned for the night but tomorrow we’re going to be checking out Fringe Festival which takes place in Adelaide for the whole month! There’s going to be street performers and shows that we can go to. We are going to a magician tomorrow night and might just walk around the festival area tomorrow kill time with whatever we find interesting.

In the Airbnb

When we got settled in I decided to take a little nap because I was still tired from this morning. The plane had almost no leg room so I found it pretty difficult to sleep on it. After my nap we went out for some food because the grocery stores close early on the weekend.

The boys and our pizzas

Since we don’t have anything planned we’re just going to head back to the Airbnb and watch a movie!

168
Par 3 - North Adelaide Golf Course

This morning Scott and I went to play a little par 3 golf course for fun! Devon and Jake weren’t feeling it as much so they stayed behind.

Golf time!

We had to rent clubs and they gave us a pitching wedge, 7 iron and putter. We had a friendly little competition and Scott ended up beating me. He was putting quite well and I could not putt to save my life. We’re now heading back to the Airbnb to have some food before we head off to the fringe festival!

169
The Garden of Unearthly Delights

We made it to Fringe Festival at about 5:30pm and our magician show starts at 7pm so we walked around to kill some time.

There was a decent crowd

A little view of the fair

While we were walking around the rain started to come down quite a bit so we had to take cover under a tree. We’re all super glad we brought our rain jackets because it made walking around a lot less miserable.

Devon and Scott taking cover

The 4 of us walking around

Everything here is quite expensive so we didn’t buy anything and just lined up a little early for our show. Because of that we managed to get some pretty good seats which is a bonus!

Devon and I are ready for some magic

170
The Media Center

The show was super entertaining! It lasted about an hour and on the way out we took a quick picture with the magician!

The boys and the magician

We walked around a little bit more and headed out to the street. There were street performers all over the place but mostly at intersections.

The Garden of Unearthly Delights is where our magician was playing

The sun was coming down and once again the sky looked cool

There were a couple other park areas we could go into (almost like little independent fairs all close to each other), so we checked out one nearby to see if it was any different.

Walking around the fair beside The Garden of Unearthly Delights. This one was called Gluttony.

It turned out it wasn’t too different and there was really much else to see. We didn’t want to spend too much money and we had some food back at our Airbnb so after walking around for about an hour and a half we decided to just call it a night and head back.

Walking in the street to a place we could get picked up

It’s going to be a fairly early night because tomorrow we’re renting a car for 3 days and going to drive the Great Ocean Road. We’re planning on doing the road itself over 2 full days and taking out time but it takes about 6.5 hours to get to the start of it, which we’ll be doing tomorrow whenever we feel like leaving.

171
Adelaide Airport Terminal, Sir Richard Williams Ave, Adelaide Airport SA 5950, Australia

We’re starting our drive towards the start of the Great Ocean Road! I’m going to be doing most of the driving so I’ll get nice and used to driving on the other side of the road by the end of the trip. We might take turns on the road itself but today it’s probably just going to be me.

In the car ready to go

We got a Toyota CH-R which is a compact SUV. We managed to tetris most of our bags in the back so we’ve all got plenty of room for sitting.

172
Henry & Rose

We had a little stop at a cafe in a town called Keith to stretch our legs, go to the bathroom and get a coffee.

A nice little break

While we were sitting down and talking a bit the couple behind us (the one in the blue shirt and his wife that you can’t see) asked us where we were from and a bit about our travel plans. They said they own a bar in Melbourne (which is where we’re headed towards) and invited us to come check it out when we’re there for a free meal and drink. They said they have kids around our age that travelled and they met people who were very hospitable so they wanted to pay it forward. It probably helped that we said we were from Canada too. They originally thought we might be from Europe which is a first. They were very nice though and we’ll probably take them up on that generous offer!

Back at the car

We’re hitting the road again and thinking of stopping in about an hour and a half at a McDonalds for a quick bite.

173
McDonald's

We’re at the McDonalds now for a quick stretch and bathroom break. None of us are very hungry so we might just grab a small snack and eat a full meal when we get to our final destination.

Devon is planning something evil

174
Turn-In Motel

All checked in to the motel we’ll be staying at! The reviews said this place was “passable” so we are pleased with how it looks on first glance. We’re only sleeping here one night and the beds were noted as the only good part so we don’t mind it at all.

Motel time!

We’re gonna head out for some food now and decide what we wanna do with the rest of our night while we’re out.

175
Turn-In Motel

We’re starting our drive along the Great Ocean Road! I’m going to update the journal at each stop with a couple photos!

Hitting the road!

We’re planning on taking our time and getting to our Airbnb at 8pm so we’ll have a nice full day!

176
Bay Of Islands

Our first stop was the Bay of Islands! It’s pretty windy today but I’d take that over it being super overcast or rainy.

Selfie!

177
Bay Of Martyrs

Then we went to the Bay of Martyrs! It was only about 1km away so it wasn’t too much of a change in scenery.

178
Worm Bay

Next stop was Worm Bay. This little beach was walking distance from the last place so once again wasn’t much of a scenery change.

Beach selfie!

179
The Grotto

About 7km later we went to The Grotto! There’s a little sinkhole here and the view is nice just like everywhere else.

Grotto selfie!

It was looking really overcast on our way to The Grottoe but the sun started to peak through right when we got here.

Another selfie of course

180
London Bridge

Next up was the London Bridge! The rock faces were so flat and steep it was pretty interesting to see. The waves at each place have been huge because of the wind so they’ve been nice to watch.

Sparks Gully

On our way to our next stop we saw a little point of interest on our cars map down a little dirt road so we decided to just send it and check it out. It was called Sparks Gully and I think it’s my favourite spot so far.

Gully selfie!

A little bonus video (you could hear how windy it was)

Twelve Apostles, Princetown VIC 3269, Australia

Our next stop was the 12 Apostles! The cliffs are definitely starting to look a little similar but this one is more of a tourist attraction and there’s an information building and bathrooms here. Since things are looking similar we’re starting to take less pictures unless it’s something new.

Jakes postcard looks awfully familiar

Apostles selfie!

We walked down to the beach as well and got another view of the cliffs!

Koala spotting!! We were on our way to our next pit stop and we had to pullover to snap a picture of course.

184
The Redwoods Otways

This stop was called the Redwood Forest. Devon and I loved this place and thought it was super peaceful and really enjoyable to walk through. We both agreed that it was our favourite location on the trip thus far. Scott and Jake liked it too but just not as much. The trees were about 100m tall which is nuts.

Redwood Forest selfie!

When I was walking in a marshier area I stepped thinking the ground was solid and my foot just sunk in so my shoes got pretty muddy.

185
Hopetoun Falls

The next stop, The Hopetoun Falls, was only about a 3 minute drive away.

Waterfall Selfie!

Bonus long exposure for fun!

186
Seacroft Estate

We made it to our Airbnb! We haven’t eaten since about 9am so we’re all super hungry. Once we brought our bags in we all got cooking right away.

Cooking up a storm

We’re just going to chill out for the rest of the day and maybe play some cards for beds. There’s a really nice king bed so we have to figure out a way to decide who gets to sleep in it. Tomorrow we’re going to wake up and do it all again because we still have 170km of the Great Ocean Road left.

187
Seacroft Estate

Devon and I ended up winning cards so we got to sleep in the luxury bed!

The comfiest bed ever

We don’t have as long of a stretch or as many landmarks for the rest of the Great Ocean Road so we slept in until 10am. It’s now time to check out so we’re hitting the road again.

188
Cape Patton Lookout

Our first stop was the Cape Patton Lookout. The waves were huge and very satisfying to watch crash into the shore. It’s pretty windy and chilly so we didn’t watch for too long.

Bonus video

189
Mount Defiance Lookout

Next up was Mount Defiance! The drive along the coast line has been super beautiful. Since I’m driving I haven’t been able to get any videos of it

You can see a bit of the road we’ll be driving on because there’s a bit of a clearing along the mountain side.

Bonus video!

190
Sheoak Falls

After another 10 minute drive we stopped at the Sheoak Falls. There was a 500m walk to a little cave called the Swallow Cave which we decided to do as well.

The Swallow Caves

The rock face inside the cave was a pretty odd design and we have no idea what could have made it happen.

A video of inside the cave

After coming back from the cave we walked to the main falls. It was one of the cooler waterfalls we’ve seen second to the big one at the Blue Mountains.

191
Lorne Pier Art Bazaar

We’re pretty much at the end of the Great Ocean Road now in a little town called Lorne, so the last few things we’ll be doing will all be close by each other. First stop in Lorne was at the pier!

192
Teddy's Lookout

The second last stop is Teddy’s Lookout. The road to get here was super steep but pretty fun to drive. It’s been really satisfying to watch the big waves crash into the shore.

193
90/106 Sydney Rd, Brunswick VIC 3056, Australia

We didn’t end up going to our final stop because of a road closure which is too bad but it was going to be another waterfall so we weren’t too devestated. Instead we just finished off the drive to Melbourne which took about an hour and a half and got groceries while we still had the rental car.

Scott debating his purchase

We’re staying at our next Airbnb for 6 nights so we got plenty of food to last us.

We’re all settled in now after our long trip. We returned the rental car and all showered and are going straight to bed because we’re all pretty tired.

195
IMAX Melbourne

Today was a pretty relaxed day. We all slept in and did our own thing today so there hasn’t been many updates (which is probably nice for whoever’s reading as well since there were so many the last couple days). Me, Scott, and Devon just hung around all day and Jake walked to the University of Melbourne campus to grab a sweater. The only thing we had planned for today was to watch Interstellar on the second biggest movie screen in the world. It was about 70 feet tall and 100 feet wide.

Walking towards the theatre

The sun was coming down as we were nearing the theatre and the sky and skyscrapers looked pretty cool.

Melbourne city

Another view of the city

It’s pretty hard to tell just how big the movie screen is but it was certainly huge. We’ve all seen Interstellar before and we love it so we were excited to watch it in such a grand fashion.

Today is my 24th birthday so we’re having a couple drinks then heading out for a dinner. We don’t have any crazy plans but maybe we’ll hit a bar or two afterwards.

Playing some cards

197
Strike Bowling QV

We weren’t on our phones much today because I made a birthday rule that we had to put them away unless we were using them to take pictures or if it was necessary. Because of that I don’t have too many photos as I put mine away but we started off our night by going to the London Tavern (which is where the couple we met on the Great Ocean Road told us to come in for a meal). Unfortunately the owners weren’t present when we came, but we were already there so we decided to get food and a drink then head to a late night bowling alley for some more drinks.

When we got to the bowling alley they gave us some pretty wicked shoes.

Our funky shoes

We decided to play a little 2v2 match of me and Scott versus Devon and Jake. None of us bowl that frequently so it was anybodies game.

The bowling alley

It was an absolute nail biter and came down to the last shot. Scott and I squeaked out a win with a total score of 450 to Devon and Jakes 446. Scott hit a turkey going into the final frame then hit 1 pin between his final 2 balls. We had a bit of a lead but both Devon and Jake hit a strike in the final frame so it came down to me. I hit a spare and had to hit 7 pins with my final ball and somehow pulled off a strike to win it all.

The champions

After bowling we wandered around the streets nearby and ended up going to a rooftop bar for one more drink. We just hung around and chatted with each other then called it a night. We’re now just about to head back to the Airbnb and probably head right to bed.

198
91 Galada Ave

Once again we had a pretty chill day today! We did our own thing and just hung around. Tomorrow we’re going to be a bit more active so we rested up today. We are going to be doing something mostly every day until I leave on the 17th to Europe so I tried to enjoy it as much as I could. I still haven’t planned much of Europe so I’m going to give it a bit of thought tonight so I’m not going in super blind.

Since we hardly did anything today, after supper we went outside and threw the football around. It was getting a little dark out so it was harder to see and we only stayed out for about an hour but it was nice to get some fresh air.

Another nice sky

Scott and I are also going to watch some Game of Thrones tonight because we haven’t been able to watch it for about 3 weeks now.

199
Moonee Valley Bowls Club

Today we tried to play pickleball but most of the tennis clubs we called haven’t even heard about pickleball so it was a flop. Instead we went lawn bowling again because it’s a pretty cheap entertainment for a couple hours.

Action shot of Jake

We had a little 2v2 again, me and Scott versus Jake and Devon. It was pretty close again but Scott and I had a good final round and won 13-10.

200
B'Churrasco Brazilian BBQ Restaurant Melbourne

Today we went for a nice dinner courtesy of the Jakes parents! It was an all you can eat Brazilian BBQ restaurant that served different styles of meat. We all made sure not to eat too much earlier today so we could fill up.

Outside the restaurant ready to eat

There was a little light at the table that we could flick between green and red. When it was green the waitstaff would bring by a bunch of food and when it was red they would let us eat in peace.

Inside the restaurant eating

We’re all done now and super stuffed so we’re just going to head back to the Airbnb and watch a movie.

201
7-Eleven

We had another slow morning this morning. We didn’t have anything planned for the day and the guys weren’t really feeling like playing another sport today. Jake, Scott and I went for a little walk to 7/11 because Scott wanted to grab a coffee and was willing to walk 2km to save $3 and get the cheapest one.

Since we were there Jake and I decided to get a slurpee

We still don’t have much planned for the day and might just pack up a little early and head down to the pool. We somehow lost the football even though we used it last night so we have no idea where it could be. We definitely got our moneys worth out of it though!

202
91 Galada Ave

We’re all packed up once again! We have a flight to Perth leaving at 11pm tonight so we will have to kill a bit of time before then. We don’t want to be lugging around our bags all day so we’re thinking of grabbing bag storage and walking around downtown.

We’re all still waking up

203
Crown Melbourne

We ended up making our way to a casino, not to gamble, but to see if they had any free drinks. They offered free coffee and pop so we’re taking advantage of it and lounging around on the couches. We each have $20 cash that we’re probably not gonna use anywhere else so we might just use it for fun here.

Lounging on the comfy chairs

Not sure how long we’re going to spend here but we might leave and come back if we want to go for a little walk.

204
Melbourne Airport

We made it to the airport and are now in our plane! We have a 4 hour flight to Perth but there’s a 3 hour time change backwards so we’ll land at about 12:15 local time. Might be nice for a little reset for me so I start getting up earlier.

Ready to dly

Once again the leg room is abysmal in this plane so it probably won’t be the most enjoyable. I’ll probably try to sleep out of boredom and shouldn’t have much trouble but I hope it doesn’t make it harder to sleep tonight.

205
Perth Airport

We landed safe and sound in Perth! We’re doing pick order for beds again and this time it was based on which bags came out first. Devons was first followed by Jake, Scott and then myself with one of the last bags of the entire flight which is pretty lame.

Buzzin through the airport

206
Perth Zoo

Today Jake, Scott and I went to the Perth Zoo! Devon wasn’t feeling up to it so he stayed back at the Airbnb.

Scott petting a meerkat

We spent about 3 hours walking around and checking out the animals. Some of the animals here were rescue animals and the zoo has really high standards for ethical care of the animals which is nice. It also seemed like a good amount of the enclosures were reasonably sized.

Victoria Park Hotel

After heading home and cooking our food we went out for a little trivia again. The questions were way more reasonable at this one so we did quite a bit better and had more fun answering the questions.

We ended up coming 5th and being 10 points behind the 1st place team. We got a couple hard questions so overall we were pleased with our performance.

Top 5 let’s go

208
O'Connor Landing (B Shed Ferry Terminal)

We had a real early morning this morning! We’re going to Rottnest Island for the day and our ferry left at 7am. The terminal was a 30 minute drive so we had to get up at about 5:45am.

Boarding the ferry

I was a little tired still so I took a nap on the way over so the boat ride went by real quick.

The island as we approach it

We’ve rented bikes for the day so we’ll be riding around on those to get around. The main stretch of the island is about 10km so we can go wherever we want.

209
Pedal & Flipper

We made it to the island and got our bikes! We got here at about 7:45am and the bike rental place didn’t open until 8:30am so we went and got a coffee first which was nice to wake up.

Ready to roll

The front break is on the right hand and the back break is on the left hand which is a little wonky so hopefully none of us instinctively break with the wrong hand and crash. We aren’t too sure where we wanna go first so we’re just going to bike around until something catches our eye.

210
Rottnest Island Lighthouse

We biked around for a bit and have been checking out some beaches. We stopped at one for about an hour and just relaxed and chatted. Afterwards we biked a couple kilometres to the lighthouse.

On our way to the lighthouse

The bike to the lighthouse was a little uphill at times so we’re now on the benches looking over the island.

Another day another view

A very underwhelming lighthouse

We’re getting a little hungry now so we might have a bit of a snack then head to another beach and jump in.

211
Roland Smith Memorial, Digby Dr, Rottnest Island WA 6161, Australia

It started to rain while we were out on a beach and we were 10km away from the main port area, so we hustled to our bikes and ripped all the way back.

Devon keeping Scott dry

The day has been fairly overcast all of today which is too bad. Because of that we’re going to see if we can head back a bit early. We’re currently scheduled to catch the 4:30pm ferry but might be able to sneak onto the 2pm ferry.

212
North Fremantle (Northport)

We made it onto the earlier ferry which is huge. We have about a 30 minute ride across the ocean back to Perth now so we’re going to play a quick couple rounds of cards.

Playing canasta

Once we got off we called an uber and Devon took a little rest while we waited.

Devon the dog whisperer

Our uber driver said that this is the first time it’s rained in about 5 months and the first time he’s even seen a cloudy day in over a month so that’s just awesome. Classic bringing the bad weather with us..

213
17 Gerring Ct

We’re all checked out of our Airbnb once again. I fly out to Amsterdam today at 10:15pm and the boys next Airbnb is about a 35 minute drive further away from the airport, so we might head downtown and get bag storage for the day. Our uber driver yesterday recommended we go to Kings Park nearby and watch the sunset as it overlooks the city and it’s a pretty nice spot. It’s close to the airport so the timing will work out pretty well.

Waiting for our uber outside

214
Grill'd William St

We stopped for a little bite to eat at Grill’d one last time because the burgers were so good.

Burger time!

Since we’re just killing time until the sunset we’re going to find a table and play cards one last time since we didn’t get to finish our game yesterday.

215
Kings Park and Botanic Garden

We walked to Kings Park a little early to throw a football around. If you’ve been keeping up to date you’d remember we lost ours a couple days ago, but today Scott, Jake, and Devon bought another one to bring to Bali.

Throwing the ball around

After throwing the ball for a bit we went up to the lookout area.

Selfie at the lookout!

There was a war memorial at the top as well from world war 2.

A view of the memorial

The sun was setting on the opposite side of where the lookout was looking out to. There were no good spots we could find that overlooked the other direction but the sky still looked pretty nice.

A view of the city as the sun went down

A view of the other side of the sky a little later

216
Perth Airport

I’m at the Perth Airport now which marks the end of of travels in Australia! It went by super quick but I had a ton of fun. It also means that my updates are no longer going to include Devon, Jake, or Scott. It might be a little weird after spending every minute together for the last 2 months but it’ll also be fun to do stuff on my own.

My boarding passes

I got a window seat for both flights which is huge. I have about 23 hours of travel time (a 13 hour flight, 3 hour layover, then another 7 hour flight). I won’t have much for updates but I’ll update when I land in Doha for my layover!

I’m also going to be starting a new journal on here for organizations sake so this one doesn’t get too long (even though it’s already super long).
