Lake Bled

After checking in at Enterprise rental car in Jlubljiana, we drove towards Bled in the afternoon after stopping by a little restaurant called Slovanian House in old town where we had many locally sourced and traditionally produced tasters.

On our second day, we as a family started getting into the rythm of a happy and health promoting routine.

Sleep:

Everyone is sleeping on time wanting to start the morning fresh and early to be able to explore what the day has to offer.

Social media and use of devices:

As a mom, I’m pleasantly surprise how willing and cooperative the kids are in self limiting the use of their phones. Especially considering they don’t get unlimited data.

Food

It takes too long to find and get to a restaurant for breakfast especially considering some places we are staying we need to check out by 10 am and/or it is quite a walk to get our \240breakfast. We bought locally sourced and traditionally processed meats and cheese to consume as breakfast in the morning.

We are using TripAdvisor app to find highly rated local cuisines. I’ll be seeing if there a SlowFood \240app to help us locate not only local cuisine but one uses locally sourced foods and traditionally processed methods of preparing foods.

The boys especially are looking how to pace their meals and be patient in finding the right eatery.

We are satisfying our deer tooth with local desserts. From experience we know which gelato shops have locally produced using the freshest and cleanest ingredients. We look for gelato shops where the ice cream is kept in stainless steel containers w kids.

Accounting

Because quality food and experience takes presecence and we have to meet a budget, the kids are learning the value of choosing wisely.

Armand is our accountant extraordinaire. He is able to look at a menu and choose:

  • Foods that meet our dietary standards ( locally, traditional,
  • That dishes that are satisfying
  • Delicious
  • In combination meet our budget

The process of accounting for all this didn’t just happen. It came organically and it wasn’t forced upon him. In fact, Armand stepped into this role naturally to meet a simple need: to satisfy his hungry belly while meeting our dietary standards and budget. It was to meet a necessity.

The process was fairly quick. It requires being steadfast with boundaries.

We were at the airport after checking through security. We had time before \240heading over to our gate of departure. We were hungry and knew that airplane food (albeit choosing from the menu ahead of time) was not going to be satisfying. The only descent option at that moment for us was PF Chang restaurant. The kids were shocked that I was happy to find them as an option. At first they wanted to order was their hungry belly was calling for. I told them that they can order whatever they want from the menu. I want them to exercise their independence (plus I never care to nor liked to police anyone. The want has to come from within). I offered them a fair choice:

  • They are older, have money and can pay for their choices that were not meeting the dietary standard that supported their health.
  • Or they could be my guests and I would pay for their meals with caveat that it had to be health promoting choices.

They of course complained and as a united front. I didn’t budge. They knew there was no wiggle room for negotiating.

Once confronted with this dilemma and complaining that “you are going to starve us”, Armand kicked into high gear and quickly found dishes that were clean, satisfying to the belly, \240taste buds and our budget. they were pleasantly surprised to walk away happy.

Hence Armand stepping into the role of being the best procurer of food items from the menu. He is able to spot the dishes in no time.

Now I hope they believe when I say \240“We ALWAYS have options: even if we find fast food restaurant as the only option”

Always a business man

Armand figures what a great business opportunity this was for the boating company. Each time they transport passengers and if they fill up a small boat with 20 people, \240they generate over $200 on average. If they operate from 9-6 and they have 6-8 boats on demand, you can do the math.

Accommodation

We are spending one night at this ok air B&B. It’s cute in that it is above a local baker. It is not “cute” as it is facing the Main Street leading the Bled. The shower didn’t offer hot water, we had to step outside of the room to get WiFi. \240We are learning what to look for in AirB&Bs. Location is key. Being further away is costing us time and money. Having WiFi connection is important as that is one of the only times we can check in with our worlds.

As a family we are choosing to forgo visiting either Postojna cave or Scottiana cave. The kids prefer to have the budget be spent on cave snorkeling and cliff jumping in Dubrovnik.

Appreciation mom being picture happy

I got A LOT of grief initially from boys about stopping every 5 seconds for a photo Opp. They stopped complaining when they noticed all the materials for posting on their social media.

Not sure if they get how journalizing through photos is a passion of mine.

I AM able to be in the present moment and do it better through the lense of a camera.

Today we explored Bled.

Took a boat trip to the island with the church on it. It was a bit pricy (about 59 euros for all 4 of us).

Enchanting setting.

Trieste

Woke up leisurely.

Checked out by 10 am.

Hiked up to the castle.

Armand was being a typical teenager, feeling invincible with pruning of neurons in full bloom. Against Andrew’s advise, he decided to balance on wooden beams, jumping from one to another, when one of the beams he landed broke from his weight

Video below speaks volumes. As a mom, I couldn’t say anything because by the time I saw him, he was trying to balance himself on the wooden pole. My warning would have distracted his focus plus he was going to do it anyways.

He landed on his left shoulder and secondly on his left cheek.

I’ll have to keep an eye on him.

Pula

Our trip to Croatia begins today.

Spend 2 nights in Pula.

Stopped by:

  • Porec
  • Rovinj

Reasons to visit Istria

https://www.frankaboutcroatia.com/istria-croatia/#Istria-destination-guides

https://www.frankaboutcroatia.com/istria-croatia/#Accommodation-in-Istria

Although majority of visitors to Istria visit this region for sun and sea, beaches are not Istria's strongest point. The coast is rocky, but also beautiful, and well-preserved. You won't find lots of construction right at the coastline; you'll instead find lots of space for everybody. Thick pine forest, and sometimes olive trees, grow all the way to the sealine, creating lots of shadow.

Within tourist resorts, like Zelena Laguna or Lanterna, in Porec, or Lone Bay in Rovinj, you'll find man-made pebble beaches. The best beaches in Istria are on the east coast of Istria, particularly in Rabac. Here rocky coast interchange with wonderful pebble beaches.

Some favorite beaches in Istria are Brsec, and Ravni at the east coast; beaches at Premantura in the south, and Delfin beach in Porec.

Top sights include: \240Euphrasian Basilica in Porec, Rovinj' s Old Town, Brijuni National Park, and the hilltop towns of Motovun and Groznjan.

Food:

https://www.frankaboutcroatia.com/best-restaurants-in-istria/

It has links 👍

https://www.frankaboutcroatia.com/5-genuine-istrian-dishes/

Istria is the best region in Croatia when it comes to food and wine. Black and white truffles, cured meats, goat cheese, olive oil, home made pasta, steaks, … you name it, Istria has it

In Istria you can expect three kinds of restaurants: tavern-style restaurantsserving traditional Istrian food like bean soup, homemade pasta, fuzi and pljukanci with various sauces, and steaks; fish restaurants serving lots of yummy and fresh sea food;

Novigrad is a small fishing village halfway between Umag and Porec. Best seafood restaurants in Istria.

https://www.frankaboutcroatia.com/dalmatia-croatia/#Accommodation-in-Dalmatia

Food is important part of country's identity.

Traditional food in Dalmatia is very light, based a lot on fish, and other seafood, green and leafy veggies like Swiss chard, and kale, then broad beans, artichokes, olive oil, garlic, parsley and other Mediterranean herbs.

As for meat, Dalmatians eat mostly baby beef, veal, and lamb. Pork is almost always eaten cured in a form of prsut, cured ham similar to Italian prosciutto, but in Dalmatia, ham is not only salt-cured, but also smoked; and panceta, salt-cured and smoked pork belly.

Some of typical Dalmatian dishes are baby beef stew with gnocchi (pasticada), squid risotto in a black ink sauce (crni rizot), and a fish stew (brudet).

Rovinj Croatia is, according to many, the nicest town in Istria, if not in the entire Croatia. The old town is situated by the sea, on a hilly peninsula, with the tower of St. Euphemia Church marking its highest point. Rovinj is very picturesque town. It is considered one of the most photogenic places.

Its colorful houses are rising from the sea. Rovinj’s steep pedestrian streets are full of art galleries and lively bars and restaurants. Town’s harbor is busy with small pleasure and fishing boats.
Rovinj is one of those towns where you never feel bored. Its beauty is just so inspiring, it makes you feel good just to walk its narrow cobbled streets up and down.

Amphitheater in Pula. The Pula Arena (Croatian: Pulska Arena, Italian: Arena di Pola) is the name of the amphitheatre located in Pula, Croatia. The Arena is the only remaining Roman amphitheatre to have four side towers and with all three Roman architectural ordersentirely preserved. It was constructed in 27 BC – 68 AD[1] and is among the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the World.[1] A rare example among the 200 surviving Roman amphitheatres, it is also the best preserved ancient monument in Croatia. It is surprising that the Arena is not listed on UNESCO world heritage list

The arena is used as a venue for many concerts.

It was a lazy day. By the time we got up and got ready, it was 1:30 lunch time at our favorite local hangout: Jupiter restaurant.

Unprotected Ruins amongt more modern buildings

We got rained out of our plan to go Premantura a ..safari cafe which many locals don’t even know about.

The kids really wanted to go to this inflatable water park....until they saw it was for little kids.

They seesawed before heading home.

Stopped by at a local olive oil dispensary where we got to experience an authentic Istrian olive oil.

Istrian olive oil is of a excellent quality and absolutely yummy.. In Porec, you can visit Agrolaguna tasting room, to learn more about olive oil, and taste Agrolaguna’s olive oils.

The olive oil is one of the most important foods in Istria. Due to its geographical location, and a type of soil, Istrian olive oil is of a superior quality. \240In a 2000 year old cookbook De Re Coquinaria, you can read about manipulating Spanish oil, adding salt, roots and leaves to it, to fake a superior quality Istrian olive oil.

Drive to town to get ingredients

Kids wanted to make breakfast and enjoy eating in the kitchen with the best views.

Had to source locally grown (easy to find in Croatia) AND sustainably grown (not so easy to find) ingredients.

In croatia, almost everything is locally sourced but not necessarily following the traditional rules of growing or processing food.

There are regular grocery stores called Konjun that carry many option.

Then there is local Tržnica that carry more artisan, more local and \240traditionally grown and \240processed foods.

We bought a dozen eggs, 8 slices of procuitto, local cheese from fully grass fed cows, seasonal local fruits.

We used the fat of the bacon to cook the eggs in.

We used olive oil we bought from the Istrian olive oil producer to season the avocados.

The nicest quaintest cemetery in town

Boys HAD to release pent up energies

While kids were on the inflatable water playground, I visited a nearby Remax office.

Wanted to check it out for investment opportunity. May be cheaper to buy and harder to rent.

Vs Opatija and Lovran have better yields. Lovran is less expensive than Opatija

Bojar \240at Remax office of Opatija said that an apartment in Opatija May cost less than a house, but a house w a pool would bring in 60k euros/ year after all the management expenses..

Late lunch at highly rated Ružmarin restaurant

Checked out of our favorite Air B&B.

Headed towards plitvicka national park.

Being interested and curious about next place to live/ invest/ conduct business, Drove through the towns \240of:

  • Matulji (recommended by Venus. cute but not upscale)
  • Volosko (cute, small, not as busy or accessible as Opatija).

Easton, Slunj

The cutest charming little village 1/2 hour before Plitvicka National Park. We explored and got to see mini versions of the waterfall before our hiking trip into the national park tomorrow.

Plitviče Lakes National park

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is nature at its best. Surrounded by amazing lake views and waterfalls as we walked along the picturesque walking trail. It’s \240one of the top things to do in Croatia!

The cascades of spectacular waterfalls and crystal clear water reflecting green, Grey, and blue against the lush landscaping is something to feast your eyes on.

We found out when we arrived that we had MANY better accommodation options.

Krka National Park is a beautiful stop on our way to Split. The stunning paradise is known for its waterfalls and nature trails.

Krka national park was similar to plitvicka waterfalls except it was a shorter hike to get to the main pool and we were allowed to swim in it.

It was a pleasant hike watching wildlife along Krka river.

Spend 1 night . See emperors palace within the walls. Take “trabskula” small boat to islands.

Possible accommodation if we keep car::

Get away from the crowds, you can get in touch with nature by hiking the “lungs of Split” aka Marjan Hill. Marjan Hill is a unique sight among dense forest that offers gorgeous views of the Adriatic Sea and is the perfect place for a picnic lunch.

Trogir: Decorated by Romanesque, Renaissance, and baroque buildings, you’ll love strolling through this well-preserved, charming, medieval UNESCO World Heritage town. After all, it is considered one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe.

Hvar island day trip: If you don’t want to stay in Hvar for the night, you can also do it as a day trip from Split. However, due to the limited ferry schedule during the off-season, we recommend you only do it as a day trip if you’re here between June and September. You can check the ferry schedule here.

https://www.jadrolinija.hr/

Korcula: This island is full of natural beauty. The best thing for you to do is park your car, and journey through the city on a bike. There are plenty of shops around that will rent you a bike from 7-15 euros per day. Vineyards and beaches are just a few things you’ll discover on your bike ride.

You can even snorkel or kayak through the crystal clear waters, and if you want to take a swim, just make sure you take a few minutes to play “Marco Polo”, since Korčula is where he was born :)

Once you’re ready to hop off your bike, take a walk through Old Town Korčula. There you can indulge in fine Croatian wines and tasty local cuisine you just can’t leave without trying. Some of those must-tries are brodet, pašticada, zrnovski makaruni and pogačice.

the crown jewel of the country, Dubrovnik. And if you’re wondering, yes, you can take a Game of Thrones tour. While Game of Thrones made Dubrovnik more famous, there’s so much more this city has to offer.

The Old Town is full of fantastic architecture and is probably the most preserved medieval town we’ve seen during our travels. Though crowded, it’s truly breathtaking and a must visit. From the churches to narrow alleyways and everything in between, you won’t even have time to put away your camera.
