DAY ONE...And we’re off!

Ready to fly ...and pull our backs out😂 When will I learn how to pack?!😭 Not pictured...another extra large checked and another carryon...and that extra, extra checked bag we had to fill when we realized each of \240our checked bags exceeded 70lbs😬

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

Married a child...pretty sure he will do this the entire flight😭

Kent’s view facing backwards...

Non stop NOLA to \240London.... Business Class on British Airways😎 Seats face each other which is awkward when you don’t know your seat mates. Just ask Kent who sat next to Chatty Cathy🙄😂

Connecting flight was short and sweet and they served tea (aka wine)😉

Next stop....MILAN!

2
Via Alessandro Manzoni, 29, 20121 Milano MI, Italy

DAY TWO..:Greetings from Milan!

Typical ugly “airport to city centre” drive in, but then the European charm just popped up out of nowhere and was breathtaking! So much of it looks just like Paris! I was not expecting the streetcar system, and I was definitely not expecting the Mario Andretti (as Kent named our driver) style of driving in/out/around said streetcars! It was something out of a movie/video game and I wish I had the time/balance/lack of grip on Kent’s arm to grab my camera and film it😱

HOTEL ET DE MILAN is exactly as pictured, historic and magical!

Here is a peek into Room 123....

{VIDEO BELOW}

We dined at DON CARLOS (the restaurant and hotel \240are owned and managed by the same family) and had a wonderful first night dinner. I had Veal Milanese, and Kent had Ossobuco, since I know y’all want to know😎...and both were amazing!

Stay tuned...more of MILAN and off to LAKE COMO tomorrow!

Milan

DAY THREE...Quick tour of Milan and then off to LAKE COMO!

To no one’s surprise, we were not very energetic this AM and the “self guided walking tour” we had planned to see the top sites of Milan quickly morphed into the “let’s at least say we saw LA SCALA” and we headed out.

http://www.teatroallascala.org/en/season/2017-2018/opera/index.html

LA SCALA is definitely not the most impressive Opera House to be seen \240(of \240course we only glanced at the exterior) but we know the history and magic is inside, so another visit to Milan is obviously in order☺️. We did at least spot a super cute Alfa Romeo outside while there, and we later drove by the Alfa Romeo manufacturing site/museum on the way out of town, adding it to the list for next time.

https://www.museoalfaromeo.com/en-us/Pages/MuseoStoricoAlfaRomeo.aspx

...

...

LA SCALA has a little plaza out front where they honor DaVinci...

This is also where artists gather to perform...we were treated to a nice cover of “Stand By Me”😂

{VIDEO BELOW}

Off the Plaza, we stumbled into the entrance of GALLERIA VITTORIO EMANUELE II (my new happy place😍)

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

Lucky for Kent we discovered this with about 5 minutes to spare before leaving Milan🙄

...

Met our driver, Roberto, back at the hotel and upon hearing we’d never been to the city before, he refused to let us leave without seeing a little more, so he drove us past quite a few highlights on our way out of town.....

First up, THE DUOMO😱

Pretty cool pic considering we were in a moving car😎

Next...the ARCO DELO PACE

We then drove by \240SFORZA CASTLE which even has a moat! \240I showed my European ignorance asking whether or not there is still \240an Italian monarchy...FYI, there is not.😉 But I did confirm that the Royal Family (which only stopped ruling after WWII) is still around and prominent. Always Royal-watching😎👸🏻

...

About 45 minutes later we were entering COMMUNE DI COMO (Como City). Roberto pointed us to the lake where we found a great little place to stop for lunch - RISTORANTE LA DARSENA . We timed it perfectly as the boat races had just begun!

http://www.la-darsena.it

...

...

...

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

After lunch we took a quick stroll to see a little more of the city centre. Como is a small city, but a lot is packed into it and it’s beautiful...taking more notes for next time as this would also be a great spot to stay.

Pictured below is the \240main square in the City Centre. In the far distance is the Como Cathedral. Unfortunately, we were out of time and this is as close as we got to it☺️

One quick selfie attempt before getting back on the road...

...

It was another hour to Bellagio and all of it was along the winding NARROW lakeeside road. It was as gorgeous as we’d imagined, but the drive did not play nicely with the wine from lunch😬

Fortunately there were breathtaking distractions like George and Amal’s little pad...VILLA OLEANDRA

They invited us over for drinks, but our time in Bellagio was \240brief and their villa is in Laglio, much closer to Como, so “drinks with the Clooneys” \240will also have to wait until next time☺️

...

We soon arrived in BELLAGIO ...and fell in love♥️

HOTEL FLORENCE is basically ON the water, right in the midst of all you want to see and do, \240and stands next to the ”Grande Dame” of Bellagio, VILLA SERBELLONI. While I had originally dubbed Florence the stepsister hotel, she’s got a lot going on for a fraction of the price and is in our opinion, by far the better value. So much charm, only 30 rooms, and the same family has owned/operated it for generations. But even if the charm of a good bargain was missing, we’d stay again just for this view😍

...

http://www.hotelflorencebellagio.it/en/

{VIDEO BELOW}

Our room shared the terrace with another room, but being the end of season, no one was staying there so we had it \240all to ourselves😍

Here’s a peek into the first floor (technically the second, but Europe☺️) where breakfast is served and access to our room, #3

{VIDEO BELOW}

Kent went to the hotel bar for a cocktail and returned to the room with reverse sticker shock! His drink was only 5E (roughly 6 bucks!) The food and drinks elsewhere also proved to be incredibly reasonable during our stay in Bellagio...adding that to ever growing long list of reasons to go back☺️

“I don’t always go to Lake Como, but when I do, I wear Sketchers!”🙄

We watched the sunset from our balcony then headed out for drinks at BAR ROSSI waterside before risking the daunting stone steps leading to dinner al fresco at RISTORO FORMA E GUSTO.

https://www.ristorantebarchetta.com/ristoro-forma-gusto/

Dinner outside in the fall is as lovely and romantic as it sounds...but the imagery doesn’t take into account the FALLING LEAVES. Our little table for 2 was perched just right so that every time the wind blew, the leaves rustled...and then DUMPED right onto us, along with everything on the table! We thought it was happening to everyone else until a sweet couple from Atlanta stopped on their way out to say we were their dinner entertainment and they loved watching Kent debate with each wind gust whether he should protect his food or his wine😂

...

...

...

Hard to see but those are leaves on Kent’s head☺️

...

Never gets old☺️

My entertainment for the night (other than my charming, leaf-fighting husband, of course) was watching a woman leave the restaurant in 4 inch stilettos and proceed to descend that stone staircase😱

...

...

After dinner, we opted not to walk down those same steps post bottle of wine, so instead we finished the climb up and found a little road. Heard some music and activity (which was odd, off season late at night) and stumbled into the locals’ sports bar, CAFFE BAR SPORT☺️ Again with the cheap drinks, and dogs who as Kent pointed out “don’t speak English” so didn’t understand “sit”😂

Quick stroll and we were back at Hotel Florence ready to call it a night but the bar was still open...barely. Love me a bar that serves gelato!

Perfect ending to a perfect day♥️

Restaurant de l'hotel Florence

DAY FOUR....Belissimo Bellagio, Varenna, and Villa Carlotta

It was next to impossible to tear us away from the hotel this morning. Adding to the already “best bargain of the trip”, the fact that breakfast - and not just a European continental breakfast - but a nice full “bacon & eggs” breakfast- is included with the rate! So between that, and my usual “can’t get out the room before noon” travel style, we lingered☺️

...

...

...

Spent a little time enjoying the picture-perfect weather around the hotel....

...

...

Every so often I make a mature decision. Today was one of those days, and recalling the stone steps from last night. I slipped off those fancy boots in favor of my tennis shoes...no regrets😉

We decided to take the ferry to VARENNA, not realizing the ferry options to get there are quite different. Luck of the draw and we got the best one - a passenger only, steam powered beauty, complete with bar😉 Always one to smell out an upgrade, I found one of 2 private balconies... I guess no one thought they could use them..score!😎

VARENNA was delightful...equally picturesque and peaceful. We had a lovely lunch at CAFE VARENNA, but if (when) we return, we’ll venture a little further to eat, maybe where we stopped later (RISTORANTE DU LAC) for wine with an even better view.

We may have missed the wisteria of Bellagio but I can’t imagine a more beautiful time here than when all the leaves are changing colors🍁😍

While waiting for the ferry back to Bellagio, another passenger boat came along and we couldn’t help but laugh at the ”large and in charge” woman who led her group of several \240couples off and quickly back ON the boat having seen the dock and declaring...”Ew, there’s nothing to see here!”...and we wonder why American tourists get a bad rep😂 Just to be clear, there is most definitely something to see in VARENNA😍

Ferry ride back to Bellagio...

We decided we had the energy to go to VILLA CARLOTTA (FYI we did not)...so we detoured to CADENABBIA...

Kent’s idea to get the mirror shot😎

...

...

...

I snapped this from the ferry office in Cadenabbia where I went to get the ferry ETA...we were totally spent at this point and I wasn’t thrilled to find the office closed and locked shut. This is also about the time Kent, who was analyzing the Italian ferry schedule, realized we’d missed the last boat from there and needed to walk to the next village to catch the car ferry. Remember what I said about that mature decision and tennis shoes?!😭

Ferry view of Bellagio, coming in at sunset...

Despite the little hiccup getting back to Bellagio, we couldn’t let our last night there end without rewarding ourselves for that hike to the ferry ..,so dinner at BARCHETTA♥️

We were at the open air table looking over the planter box seen here...just perfect😍

Stay tuned for our farewell to Bellagio and journey to a new country for both of us!

Acropolis/Parthenon in the distance. Our room had a lovely view with 2 balconies. We went upstairs for a nightcap in TUDOR HALL which had an even more impressive view of the landmarks.

Getting a good night’s sleep so we can be up and out early tomorrow👍🏻 (Spoiler Alert: this did not happen😭)

6
Pireas

DAY SIX...Athens and OCEANIA RIVIERA

Let the GRISWOLD GAMES begin!!😂

What was supposed to happen this morning:

-RIse & shine 7:00 AM

-Breakfast with a view upstairs at TUDOR HALL

-packed and downstairs \240for 10:00AM pickup by our driver who would give us a tour around the city before heading to the port in PIRAEUS.

What really happened:

NONE OF THE ABOVE😭

Maybe it was the fact that I was on my phone at 3 AM and couldn’t fall asleep..., maybe it was the change of time zones...again...or maybe I’m just a traveling idiot😝 All I know is this morning I was not on my A game. I wasn’t even on my C or D game. This AM gets the big F😭

I lingered in bed and decided to order room service so we could relax while getting ready instead of going upstairs for breakfast. Kent asked if I was sure what time the driver was coming and did I really have time to wait for room service before getting in the shower... I wasn’t (and apparently I didn’t😬).

Me: “Ummm...pretty sure it’s 11:30”

Kent: “Really? I thought we have to be at the port for 12?!”

Me: “Look, I’ll pull it up on TripIt to prove it” which is when I see the 10:00AM pickup that I’d arranged...and the time was 9:54AM.

$@?&!!!

So cue the theatrics...the frantic calls, email, and Facebook message to the car company. They were so kind but had to report they couldn’t move or cancel our reservation since the driver was already downstairs waiting!😬

A quick compromise and plea and the driver agreed to wait, but we wouldn’t have time for that tour we wanted (and fortunately had not paid but about 20E extra for)....so the world’s shortest showers, spastic packing and a hasty exit were in order. But I did find time for a Acropolis selfie while Kent dealt with the luggage☺️😂

Oh, and let me just say that this AM is why I’m hoping for another 25 years...the only one cursing or freaking out was ME. Kent just gave me that look he saves for me \240and started shoving things in suitcases. He later admitted he was shocked and also a little amused that I’d made such a goof when I’m the ultimate organizer and planner... I do like to keep him on his toes😎♥️

...

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

...

Our driver, Dmitrios, \240was patient and friendly. He felt terrible that we missed our tour so he tried to give us as much info as he could on the quick drive to the port.

Unexpectedly there was NO traffic, super quick check in and security entry and...

WE WERE ON THR SHIP AT 11:37AM😎

That’s right, people, WE WERE EARLY!!😂

...

...

...

“Your cabin’s ready!”😎

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

...

...

...

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

Another video of the cabin because we are so impressed with the layout and storage!

Since we were so early to board (and didn’t sail away until 6pm) we had plenty of time to settle in with champagne, and get to know the ship.

While walking upper deck we paused for a second and overheard from the deck below...

Guy # 1: “I’m from New Orleans” (no shocker given the “If I’m drunk call my wife, Misty” T-shirt he was wearing😂

Guy #2: “Hey, my buddy here is from Lafayette!” So basically we flew halfway across the world to get on a boat with Cajuns😂

We were expecting the ship’s population to include a lot of canes and scooters and while there are a few “senior moments” to be found, that is not the case. I’ve only see one scooter. It is not the “floating nursring home” some have described...at least not on our sailing. LOTS of multi generational family trips (including small children)..no teens but quite a few millennials and young 30somethings...and definitely many in our Empty Nester age bracket😎

Oh, and half of Asia is on board ...so we are sailing with Cajuns and Crazy Rich Asians😂

...

Talked Kent into touring the spa with me \240which led to him taking advantage of the free Acupuncture consultation...you know Kent and things that are FREE☺️ I was allowed to go with him and I’m so glad I did or I would have missed the doctor’s shocked \240expression when he inserted the tool used to analyze into Kent’s ear, took a deep breath, and asked him if he’d been drinking😂Apparently you can tell this from your ear😉 So ensued the lecture that if Kent wants to eliminate his gout, he has to give up his “rich man’s diet”...gee, thanks Dr. Killjoy for stating the obvious🙄 We haven’t even set sail and just paid to upgrade to the unlimited prestige liquor package....your timing is great😂

Nonetheless we are booked for a stone massage for me and acupuncture for Kent on Friday😎😂

The SPA SANCTUARY😍

Just a small part of the massive library/lounge area. It is right by Baristas, a fantastic coffee shop 😍😎

So back to the age thing, we have zero room to judge because as we realized tonight, these people go to bed well after us😂

{VIDEO BELOW}

We did manage to get dressed for dinner (but forgot to take pictures) and had a great meal in the main dining room. OCEANIA is known for its food and beds and so far neither disappoints! For what it’s worth I’m sure we looked fab since our waiter kept calling us ”Wonder Woman and Superman”. He then changed it to “Lewis and Clark” which seemed odd. We didn’t realize until bed that he meant LOIS and Clark😂

Goodnight!💤

Aegean Sea

DAY SEVEN...Uh-Oh!

I didn’t want to add this to yesterday’s report so it could end on a high note, but last night we hit a bit (quite a bit) of a snag.

We were about 3 hours out to sea when the captain announced that DUE TO MEDICAL EMERGENCY we would be RETURNING TO ATHENS😱

We later learned that some poor man had suffered a heart attack not long after we set sail. The good news is the ship is capable of stabilizing someone in that situation, but he did need to get off the ship ASAP. There is also a helicopter evac option but either he didn’t have the insurance/money to pay for it or it was deemed medically preferable not to go that route..(lesson learned, get the insurance!) ....regardless we docked back in Piraeus around midnight. We watched it all unfold from our balcony but I didn’t want to take pics b/c at the time, we weren’t 100% that he was alive😬 No one was rushing or doing anything whatsoever resembling an “emergency” ... eventually he was unloaded to the cheers of those with a closer view.

And dejavu, we set sail from Piraeus again.

Early this AM the Captain once again came over the PA system to inform us that we would no longer be stopping in RHODES😰 We lost six hours with the situation last night plus the weather in Rhodes was making for a rough/near impossible docking situation...so the Oceania head office called it.

SEAS THE DAY....DAY AT SEA!!

Making lemonade...we were not too upset even though we’d rented a car (refunded) and were really looking forward to seeing Rhodes. Our cruise \240itinerary was port-heavy with no sea days so this forced day of R&R was welcomed.

the weather started getting rough, our (not so) tiny ship was tossed...”

We had dodged the rough storms the captain had warned us of the day before and it was GLORIOUS up on deck....until it wasn’t😱

{VIDEO BELOW}

Changing our path for Crete avoided some weather drama by Rhodes but still brought us some crazy wind gusts \240...enough that my dress actually unbuttoned and flew open while walking across the deck😱😂 The winds of course brought waves 🌊 ...and a lot of rocking😬

So we headed inside and to the top (HORIZONS) where every day at 4pm passengers are treated to the most delightful tea service accompanied by a string quartet😍 I wish my seasickness allowed me to take more pictures and video and \240capture the elegance of it all...definitely impressive and something that stood out for me about the cruise...but before anyone starts to worry about us, and wonder if we’ve traded “5 o’clock somewhere” for “tea time”...they had a full bar😎😂

I really wasn’t feeling much like dinner but tonight was our first specialty restaurant, JACQUES, and I didn’t want to miss it. Kent, of course had no problem rallying😎☺️

OCEANIA’s restaurants were developed by Chef Jacques Peppin...this one is his namesake.

https://www.oceaniacruises.com/experience/dining/jacques/

This was some sort of crabmeat concoction....reminded me of the jello mold “build a cell” projects that the kids had to do in middle school...except those tasted better. ...sorry, Jacques😂. But the restaurant was lovely, service was good, and I wish I was hungry for the prme rib which arrived next.

The most interesting man in the world...sorry ladies, he’s taken😎

...

Once again turning in early as our elders hit the dance floor😂💤

DAY EIGHT...Spa Day - Heraklion, Crete

Before realizing we’d have a legitimate “sea day” yesterday we had decided to stay on board today and enjoy the ship, starting with some time in the CANYON RANCH SPA...

https://www.oceaniacruises.com/ships/riviera/life-on-board/canyon-ranch-spa/

{VIDEOS \240BELOW}

...

...

I don’t recall any of our past cruises offering acupuncture, (maybe we just weren’t in the market at the time), but Kent was (sorta) in the “What have I got to lose?” mood so he not so eagerly joined me.

Here’s Kent trying to assess all the places needles could go ...

ALL the places😂

He was hoping to keep his clothes on for the procedure😬 Silly boy...#spavirgin😂

For the record my massage was fantastic! And lasted a lot longer than his acupuncture ...I found Kent \240poolside and \240ready for round two of a double Bloody Mary😂

His bottom line on acupuncture...the clean version is it’’s now in the category of things he won’t repeat😬😂

...

We had a nice lunch onboard then decided to head into Heraklion and walk around since we missed a port day yesterday and this was the first oppurtunity to leave the ship.

First, a bus from our port to the other port...it’s luck of the draw where you dock and luck was not on our side so we were in the further docking port, then a long walk from the port to the city centre. The walk was mostly ugly, and LONG. Not a hard walk, just not one worth repeating. But the taxis wanted 20E to drive us there and the weather was absolute perfection, so off we walked😂🌞

My love for animals, especially dogs, does not stop at the border.....and I’ve never met one I wouldn’t pet...until now😬 They line the steeets here like a band of gypsies, each playing dead and hoping for scraps/attention...it’s pretty sad but they look content and well fed (although not well groomed) ...

...

Different dog...same old trick☺️

HARRY POTTER in GREEK!

We did enjoy the Old Town area and had a great stop for drinks, and for Kent, more octopus, on Market Street at PENINTA-PENINTA (50-50)

http://peninta-peninta.gr/

...

...

The sun was starting to go down so we headed back to the ship...this time via taxi which was only 5E (you’d think they’d price that in reverse because everyone seemed to walk TO the centre but no one wanted to do the trek BACK☺️)

Dinner in the ship’s main dining room followed by a show with the ship’s comedian. Best nap I’ve had in a while☺️

Turned in early (anyone seeing a pattern?😂) in anticipation of SANTORINI tomorrow!😍

BOTTOM LINE ON CRETE:...

Prettier than we expected and even just walking around Heraklion is worth getting off the ship, although next time a taxi from the port would make the immediate impression better.. It was our first taste of Greece since we missed the stop in Rhodes. \240Everyone we encountered was friendly \240and seemed appreciative of the tourism market. Our waiter was thrilled to trade his 20E for Kent’s $20 bill jutst to have it, even though the exchange was a $ loss for him☺️ Crete is a huge island and really needs much more than a few hours to say “I’ve been there!” so it remains on the “I’d like to return” list👍🏻

Santorini

DAY NINE...SANTORINI GREECE

...

A relatively smooth and easy tender led to my not so favorite travel experience of the trip...the swaying cliffisde cable car up the mountain to Fira. But the views were incredible and the only alternative to reach the top was a donkey ride up the same cliff (and they looked hungover and moody) so we we went with Option A...😬

...

...

{VIDEOS BELOW}

...

...

WORTH IT😍

We had scheduled the “First Impressions” tour through Viator and met our driver/guide, (another) Dmitrios, as we exited the cable car. Viator books tours by locals and in this case it was www.santoriniexperts.com

https://santoriniexperts.com

Began our sightseeing adventure with a walk through Old Town. Quickly discovered the theme of the day ...”Come to one of the most phoot-envy inducing places in the world/wait around for the insta famous wanna bes to take the same picture 49 times before you can get your chance for one imperfect shot because your husband won’t let you play millennial and follow their lead and try to be insta famous, too🙄😂”

...

...

...

...

Cutest little bookstore started by 2 American tourists who visited and chose to never leave☺️

...

...

...

Had to pause to watch the lingerie photo shoot down below😎 Or as Dmitrios called it “The priest and the porn star” since there were churches on both sides of her😂

...

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

...

...

...

Kinda bummed that Kent wouldn’t let me sit and pose on the top ledge like the girls \240who were there before us😂

...

We were given a little time to explore some of Old Town on our own...

...

...

...

...

Then Dmitrios picked us up once again to take us on ”the best views“ tour of the island ...but lots of other tourists had the same idea☺️

...

So we got this shot instead😎👍🏻

Next up, we finally got to see what all the tumbleweeds we’d been seeeing everywhere were about...

Actually not tumbleweeds! Didn’t realize before visiting but Santorini is a volcanic island and has very little rainfall so much of it looks like a desert! However, this makes great \240conditions for growing grapes and next to tourism, wine is the biggest economic source for the island. These “tumbleweeds” are actualy grapevines carefully shaped and constructed for this climate and growing conditions.

We had a complete tour of the island, North, South, and everything in between! \240Dmitrios, took us to a working farm/vineyard on the South side where Maria, whose husband is 4th gen proprietor of the vineyard, showed us around and and gave a wonderful peek into Santorini’s wine making process. Her farm is both a working winery and market...great stop!

http://www.farosproducts.gr/home

This is where they (still) stomp the grapes!

The cave where stomped grape juice collects...

...

...

...

Learned that capers grow as a plant and the leaves (when cooked and marinated) are just as tasty as the berries!

Meet my new friend, Marco Polo! Unlike all the street dogs of Crete Kent kept pulling me away from, MP was super clean and pet-able...even though he totallly manipulated me and kept pushing his watermelon over the ledge to see if I’d pick it up☺️

...

...

Dmitrios ignored my fear of heights and switchback drives and insisted we experience the view at the highest point in Santorini...he was forgiven😍

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

...

...

...

...

He also brought us to a black sand beach....Santorini has black, red, and white beaches!

...

And then it was time to bid farewell to this amazingly photogenic, “everyone should see at least once”, bucket list of an island😍😰

{VIDEO BELOW}

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

What goes up must come down😬 Kent has worked pretty hard to get me over my “issues” which make travel difficult...but this falls under the “ok I tried it” category....next time we visit Santorini, I’m flying into the flat side and driving to the City Centre...no more swinging cliffside cable cars for me😝...and NO MORE TENDERS if I can help it...the submarine ride back to the ship was not one I’m longing to repeat!

...

Back on the ship and stiill shaking off the tender experience, no rest for the weary because tonight’s dinner was at RED GINGER, preceded my a little martini pregame at the aptly named Martini’s .

So, full disclosure...I really wasn’t looking forward to this restaurant. Asian cuisine is usually my last choice, but Kent lives for it and hey, it was his trip, too☺️ Besides, I’d read that this was the tops of the four specialty restaurants on board and not to be missed.

THE REVIEWS WERE SPOT ON😍 From start to finish the food, service and experience were \240highlights of the trip. The restaurant manager went above and beyond to make sure we felt special...and we watched her do this with every single table. \240She and the restaurant are true assets to OCEANIA and specifically, the Riviera.

https://www.oceaniacruises.com/experience/dining/red-ginger/

...

...

I’m so bummed I didn’t “film the buffet” and we have no food pics...it was just one of those “let’s be in the moment” nights, but at least I have this cute pic of my date and his empty wine glass when the meal was over😎

I swore I’d live in the library on board when we first toured the ship but this staged pic was as close as I got😂

And then this happened🤬 But it justifies my overpacking (17 pairs of shoes...stop judging me)

So I hobbled back to the cabin and we called it a night 💤

DAY TEN...ARGOSTOLI, CEPHALONIA

Having been completely destroyed by the Ionian earthquake in 1953, Argostoli’s architecture is relatively new ..

But its inhabitants are still very much loyal to tradition and history.

Our visit was on a Sunday and we arrived just in time to see the after party of a Greek Orthodox Mass ...everyone comes to the Square!

Here come the priests!

After my experience with Greek dogs in Crete, so happy to see that this one remembered his manners and sported his Sunday best😎

And then prepared to set sail again with uneasy expectations factoring the captain’s announcements about weather... (note the barf bags at the ready.......these weren’t there before😬)

Dubrovnik

DAY TWELVE...DUBROVNIK, CROATIA

We woke up to the surprise that we were still docked in KOTOR! Having been warned of the weather last night, we were expecting a 5AM departure so we could wait out the winds, but the lull didn’t occur until after 7. Apparently there were almost hurricane force winds early AM and we slept right through it!

On the bright side, the delay meant we were actually awake for the sail away so we were treated to another slow boat tour of the Bay of Kotor on the way out. \240Then it was back into the Adriatic Sea where we sailed up the coast to DUBROVNIK.

It was a hazy and rainy AM but beautiful nonetheless and so peaceful....

...

The approach into Dubrovnik led us to believe we were in for a gray day...

And then just as it has the entire trip, the weather changed right in time! \240The skies cleared and the sun came out😎

...

...

There was a 40+ min wait for the ship’s courtesy shuttle busses and due to our delay, we only had 3-4 hours to see Dubrovnik, so we skipped that line in favor of a taxi into Old Town.

Stopped for a lovely lunch at GRADSKA KAVANA ARSENAL, of the NAUTIKA family of restaurants. . I had read that it was one of the best people watching spots with its location right on the square, and it did not disappoint. But if we ever return, I’d request to be seated out back where the view is even better😍

Here’s the back terrace where we’ll dine next time😍

After touring Old Town we decided to head to greater heights for a better view.

Unfortunately this meant....yep, another cable car ride😭 But luck was on my side because the ticket seller was taking a lunch break (so they just close the office🙄) and the line quickly backed up. Factoring that, and the drivers who just happened to be standing right there offering similarly priced drives up the mountain, we hopped in a clown car and began the switchback drive😱

...

...

...

The cable car we opted not to take...

Our time in Dubrovnik was far too brief but at least we got one more great view with our sail away...

Back on board it was time for another specialty restaurant. POLO GRILL

They may have been out of prime rib but they compensated with a delicious anniversary treat!

...

...

After dinner we decided to check out the signature stage show in the Riviera Lounge. I had read that entertainment on board was just so-so and the comedian echoed that, but tonight’s show (singers and dancers) were excellent! Ditto that for the nightly piano player in Martini’s and string quartet, so I’m going against the grain and stating that the \240entertainment was right in line with the elegance and size (1250 passengers) of the ship...was it fireworks and Broadway? No, but it was delightfully entertaining nonetheless.

DAY THIRTEEN...VENICE!!

Although getting into the heart of Venice from the port can be a little confusing, there is probably no better way to catch a first glimpse of this incredible city!

...

...

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

...

...

...

Lesson learned...plan ahead! Having not attended any of the ship’s pre-port talks, and having not researched Venice much in light of being tired planning and researching given how many we places we were visiting this adventure...we got off the ship unprepared and wasted a good bit of valuable time getting a plan sorted out. Definitely not the only ones in this fix as several other passengers were quite sore about it...so it \240adds to the very short list of “things Oceania could do better”. The only thing to do \240at the port is leave...but how? The overpriced water taxi or trying to sort out the Vaporetto (overcrowded water bus)schedule with no clue where we needed to go or walk once we got off? Of course had I researched just a little bit more, would have learned that the Vaporetto literally stops AT our hotel, not just “walking distance” so that would have worked just fine...but since we were already getting frustrated figuring this out and wanted to stop wasting time, we bit the bullet and ordered...

Our first water taxi ride!

RISTORANTE NUOVA GROTTA

Convinced Kent that factoring upcoming weather, we had to do a gondola ride today! Timed it perfectly to make it a sunset tour😍😎

The part where Kent had to move to the front to balance the gondola before attempting to duck under a low bridge😬

Our gondolier was very proud to inform us that he was selected to escort Pope Benedict through the same canals we were exploring ...so basically we met the Pope😎😂

Venice

DAY FOURTEEN...DISEMBARKATION DAY and VENICE, in the rain!

Disembarkation was relatively easy, but wet...and cold, and seriously slippery!

Dear OCEANIA, FYI it rains in Venice (and probably lots of other ports).. A canopy should have been in place for disembarkation, or invest in a tarp at least🙄 Talk about ending on a damper (literally), but the cruise was almost entirely magical so we’ll let this little inconvenience slide.

We weren’t exactly sure how we and \240ALL of our luggage were going to make it to the hotel in a small boat...in the wind and cold rain😬 but apparently we weren’t the first obnoxiously-heavy traveling American tourists in Venice. Our hotel arranged the transfer service and they \240handled it all in stride. We were greeted with umbrellas and luggage assistance to \240a waiting van for a quick ride from the ship to the water taxi, then an enclosed water taxi ride to the hotel...it was actually pretty seamless, and the rain only added to the historic beauty of the hotel and surrounding area as we arrived☺️

Very pleased with the transfer company...

See how happy he is with me and my packing style?😂...

...

Quick tour of the hotel and then we headed out to see Venice in the rain while waiting for our room to be ready.

Hotel concierge had a great recommendation for a delicious dinner at VECIA CAVANI...hotel must have some pull there because we were treated like rock stars upon arrival😎

The non-feminist in me was completely enchanted to be given the “no prices for the lady” version of the menu while Kent got the one for the guy who’s paying😎👍🏻😂

Time to turn in for a great night’s sleep with no more rocking😂 Here’s a glimpse of our home for the next four nights....

Venice

DAY FIFTEEN...still in VENICE...and it’s still raining☺️

Today’s “what’s for lunch” debate took an ugly turn😂

...

...

Walked up and down the Strada Nova, then once again headed towards St Mark’s Square

...

...

...

...

Detoured to check out HOTEL FLORA where Kent’s parents had stayed years ago

Discovered the reason gondola rides are often viewed as overpriced tourist traps...there are NINE in this small canal! Going away from St Mark’s to catch one is the trick to a much more pleasant ride😎

Stopped for drinks and to check out THE GRITTI PALACE

Leaning tower of Venice!

Can you take to many canal/bridge pics in Venice? The answer is no, no you cannot😎😂

Decided to stay in for this rainy night and had dinner at the hotel restaurant, L’ALCOVA.

The food was delicious although not all courses matched the portion size of the “side green salad”😍

And fortunately only one course contained squid ink😝

DAY SIXTEEN....VENICE/MURANO

Here comes the sun!!

Took advantage of what promised to be a beautiful day and had a stroll around the Strada Nova before heading out by water taxi for Murano.

...

...

...

...

Stairwell leading to second floor at CA SAGREDO

...

...

...

...

...

The water taxi was “free” and part of the “free” tour offered by one of the Murano glass factories and our hotel. The ride was great, the tour and demonstration impressive, and the pressure to buy something really expensive at the end of the tour...HEAVY😂 So we (not so) graciously ducked out with the (unkept) promise of returning after lunch😎

...

{VIDEO BELOW}

...

...

Had a lovely lunch waterside in Murano then walked around where we found a few more reasonably priced glass shops. The trick is to buy local and authentic \240as 90% of the leather/glass for sale around Venice is created in China or Taiwan, but we managed to find a couple legit things to bring home😎

Dekucious lunch at. TRATTORIA VALMARANA

https://m.facebook.com/pages/category/Italian-Restaurant/Trattoria-Valmarana-436816323063293/

So instead of the “free” water taxi back which would have involved the walk of shame to the glass factory which sponsored our visit, we opted for the Vaporetto...and got off as quickly as possible😭. Now I know why water taxis are so expensive...people will pay just about anything to avoid that sardine ride😝

Back in Venice we stopped for drinks in this square and had to scroll through pics to realize it was the same one we’d 😍 over during our nighttime gondola ride. The building to the left is actually the entrance to the hospital and the building connected at right is one if the many amazing churches in town.

...

...

...

...

...

We couldn’t attend the theater at LA FENICE during our visit but our hotel arranged for the next best thing...dinner at ANTICA MARTINI next door.

http://www.anticomartini.com/

But the best part of the night may have been pregame cocktails at this great outdoor bar, compete with leather wingbacks😎...

Turning in early in anticipation of a 3 AM wake up call and 4AM water taxi to the airport. Definitely .ready to be home, but so grateful for such a magical adventure. Our overweight bags are traveling back with overweight hearts full of amazing memories♥️

Cheers 🥂 to 25 years😍

Thanks for following along...Ciao!😎😘
