We have about 29 minutes until we touch down on Tokyo soil. I have not properly converted from LA to HNL time difference and all I can say is that I’m EXHAUSTED! Like literally can barely keep my eyes open! We are arriving a little earlier than expected. I believe our flight was arriving at 17.45hrs but looks like we will be arriving at 16.43! Wow! What a difference!
So I haven’t had time of energy to post much in here because I was mega tired from yesterday’s event (flying) and the humidity here set off a flare.

Dinner
Egg salad and fruit sandos are so good here. Getting food from the kombini (convenience store) is a real thing and part of their culture. It’s not a tourist thing, per se but what they really do here as a local.
It’s a little easier for me to manage my journal when I write as it happens.
Morning has broken
This morning… I’m off to find my first Eki stamp. Clare and I found out about how train stations throughout the nation have stamps (rubber stamps) to represent each station. In a country full of trains… this should be an adventure.
Since it’s a bit early and cooler than it normally is here::: I decided to talk across the block to get my first Eki stamp at the Seibu-Shinjuku Station.
I didn’t come out as nice as the picture above but it works. I tried a few times but maybe it’s over used and the details have since gone away.
It’s a depiction of the hotel (Shinjuku Prince) that I stayed in with Pop. The subway station is under the hotel or somehow connected to it. Time to find some coffee. I know there are some in the “Kombini” (Japanese for convenience store) but instructions are written in Japanese and I don’t want to bring attention to myself and pull out my translation
Below are some things that I saw along my walk 😊
The Seibu Shinjuku Eki Stamp
The Limo Bus schedule from airport to hotel and vice versa. ^
The kids finally woke up and heading out for an adventure. But first…. Coffee!
Truffle + sausage pizza bite (?)
Cappuccino
Looks like a scorcher today. Today also looks like it will be the peak of this heat. Suppose to get rain around the 13th. We have that monsoon coming in but not expected to hit Tokyo but around the southern region such as Okinawa. It looked like it was heading into China.
Spinach feta croissant + cinnamon roll and a soy latte
We started at Seibu-Shinjuku hoping that we could take the subway to Shinjuku station. No such luck.
Cool coffee house!
The above coffee shop is still in old style inside. I would put it at 30s-40s interior or older. Not positive if that’s how they decorated it. The walls are still quite dark and I just love it. I have to take the family here to ooogle with me.
I don’t know what the rocket ship building is called anymore but surprisingly enough, Pop and I walked there and I cannot remember why. More than likely we were lost.
Looks sketchy but this is quite lively with izakayas in the evenings.
Izakayas are little alcoves that could probably fit 2 couples inside but they mostly sell bar type foods. They don’t open until the evening but it’s simple food fares for the weary salarymen or late night karaoke “party peeps!”
Shinjuku station.
Below is the same route that I took with Pop to get to the Shinjuku station to Tokyo Station.
I have to be honest with you that getting around Japan without a translator is perilous, to say the least!
We arrived at Tokyo Station with only MINOR hiccups at the Shinjuku station. The Shinjuku station was under some renovations and finding where we needed to be without some help would have been a big mistake!! But it all worked out and this is the interior of the station we arrived in.
This is where the assassination took place
Far right of station
Eki Stamp for Tokyo Station
This says: “Tokyo Station”
Outside of where we arrived
Tōkyo station
Exterior description of station
The middle building of station
This building is now a super duper fancy hotel - Tokyo Station Hotel. Next time I am in the hotel… I will give you a better idea
Closer view of middle section of station
This is the old Tokyo Station.
Naked man statue
Assignation site of Prime Minister Hara Takeshi in 1921
I have no idea what location I picked but this time in Tokyo Station it was so chaotic + crowded + hot/humid + LOST!!
We needed to find some place to sit because, it’s not customary for Japanese to have any sitting in their stations. I suspect it has something to do with the assassination and also there were bomb threats in Tokyo (reason they don’t have any trash bins anywhere in public!)
We stopped in a McD’s in hopes that there was seating somewhere! I am supposed to eat 5 small meals throughout the day and this was a perfect reason to eat.
Book shop
I have NEVER been to a book store where I felt uncomfortable… until now! I have never been uneasy with paper and ink… until today! I felt so illiterate that I nearly cried!
This map did not help us at all! I hope some blind person was more successful!
Bacon and cheese “hot pocket”
Watching them make hard candy! Worth going back!
Tatami mat for my lulu pig collection.
Pyramid watermelon?? ¥108,000 = $684.65 for 1 melon!!
Below are some truly over priced fruits we found at the grocery store in the station.
¥1296. = $8.22usd (for 4)
Oooh! The sweets look great too! I think I want one
Are kimonos making a comeback? I may want to get one too! Haha 🤣
This is called Mega Muffin -
It has double sausage, single egg, bacon and cheese.
Tomorrow’s task! Happy meal surprises!!
Kanno Coffee
I am not a coffee ice cream person but this was so delicious!!
My knee was so mad it me today that it called in reinforcements from my hip and back to make me stop and rest a bit.
Apple tartin + soft serve ice cream + coffee jelly
Square watermelon? ¥21,600 = $136.93 usd (for 1 melon)
On our way home and they had these funny signs all over the place! Took a while to understand what Touting translates to in Japanese.
In Japanese, “Touting” is more of an “advertising” sort of word. It’s used for um… “advertising goods that one carries at all times.” Fine! I will be blunt! Touting is more of a prostitution act of some sort. This particular
I have not been walking at my normal hours but maybe it IS my normal wake time since it’s the same time I woke up in Hawaii. What time do I wake up now? Around 4-4.30am. It’s okay. I’m usually greeted by a beautiful sun rise. Only problem is that I do not have any coffee to enjoy with my sunrise.
Mushroom spaghetti with Japanese twist
How to order…
Doesn’t take long for food to arrive
Bolognese spaghetti
Leaving the department store
Breakfast of champions!
Pop would disagree but cheesecake + morning java cannot be beat! Haha
Earl Grey chiffon cake
Takeshimaya welcome guy
This is the coffee shop that Pop and I used to go to…
Because they were open early and they have really good coffee! Now that we know they are open at 7am… we can skip McD’s now! Phew!
Inside the store… Pop and I oogled the windows
We stopped for lunch in this Showa Cafe in the mall
These are the buttons to operate the toilet
As I mentioned before, McD’s is the only place that is open a little earlier than the others… or so I thought!
The loo in McD’s
They don’t use seat covers but this thing above. In all honesty, I prefer this one over the paper protector. The reason being is that it’s alcohol based and feels cleaner to me than the paper protector.
Sunrise from my window
Breakfast
There are not many places that are open early in the morning here in Japan. Most places do not open until 10 at the earliest - except for McD’s.
This is NOT the Shinjuku crossing like Shibuya but it was a landmark for me to know where to go
We were returning to our scene of the crime and had to go back to Hands. One of our fave stores right now but it’s a bit further than my body can handle today.
Yesterday, I had walked nearly 18,000 steps- which, by the way is about 16,000 more than I’m accustomed to in LA!
Our bill… conversion in USD would be $15.97
I believe that each ramen bowl was ¥550 ~> $3.48 usd
The kids had add-ons so the bill was obviously higher but still! What a bargain! 😊
The morning view
This is where we usually have coffee now. A bit pricier than McD’s and less crowded than Starbies… but totally worth it!
We decided to try walking today to find our Eki stamps and we were able to get ONE so far. The day is still young.
Okay. Time to get off my bench and head behind me. Apparently, it’s a Pokemon something building. Who knows? I haven’t been on this side, and this happens to be the 30th anniversary of Pokémon.
As we exited the station (without getting lost this time), we stumbled upon this store! There is NO WAY I am going to skip out on an electronic store! No siree bob!
I did not venture into yodabashi the last time I was here and I could totally outfit my entire kitchen with Japanese kitchen gadgets and be happy. Alas, Japan plugs are similar to US ones and the EU has their own special ones. So outfitting my kitchen would not be possible… but a cook could dream!
I also do NOT know why this is the only place with rows of benches that I have found. It’s quite unusual to see. Even when you see concerts, it’s standing only.
All weekend, they had these girl bands performing in the afternoons and evenings. I got in trouble for taking this pic by security but I don’t even know who they are! The guard just told me 🙅♂️
Got the point and I rushed away. Boe said it was probably because I was on the wrong side of the road.
By the way… we are used to driving on the left side and also the same side that we walk. Here in Japan, they drive on the right side and also walk on the left side. I cannot tell you how many times Boe pulled me out of the walkway for being on the wrong side. I’m used to walking on the right side but not here. The things you learn. Hopefully, I will get it correct before the end of the day.
We were trying to find the Keio stamp but it is not so easy to find. I think I am wearing down the kids!
This was the first place we ate with Pop.
We called it the #78 store. It was because Pop was waiting patiently (or as patiently as he could) to get into the Rolex store. Then after about 30 mins, I had to check on him and he was still waiting. He was #78 and they were on something like 75. Pop had not gotten inside the store when his patience ran out. Piman! So I took him upstairs to get something to eat and wait.
Hopefully, we can find this garden upstairs.
Fruit Sando
Going to see if I can find an “Einstein” patch for my hip and lower back after we are done here. Then to venture outside before the rain starts for the WEEK! Nice!! Can’t wait for there to be a break in the heat.
Beef stew
I got separated from the kids because they wanted to go this way and I wanted to go that way.
In return, I got lost in the Shinjuku labyrinth! It’s insane in there and I was having major anxiety attacks because it’s happened before in Tokyo station. That being said, I ended up in ANOTHER exit.
Chokorēto cookie + yuzu sparkling lemonade
Tourist Info centre
This is how I knew they had chokorėto chip cookies
The person sitting in front of me had one!
We have one of these between the Bradley Building and Grand Central Market in DTLA. I finally found an acceptable “Chokoreto” (chocolate) chip cookie and it happens to be in Japan! Go figure!
Tourist information centre
On the hobble to the info centre, I found a bench! Doesn’t look like one I’m used to but I know it’s a bench.
Important information
This is a nice mall that is connected to the station… if anyone wants to visit
I knew that if I turned 180° that the path would lead me to the tourist information center where I was heading anyway! Phew! Less pain trying to get to where I wanted to go.
Eki Stamp
This is what I came for. I tried to find the Pokemon limited edition ones but they were more difficult to find with my anxiety levels. So, I decided to abandon that challenge.
Half Butt bench
Taken from the NeWoMan building. Lost again!
Finally got a happy meal!
I highly recommend getting their exclusive dipping sauce. I have found that each country has their own exclusive sauce and it’s worth trying.
Statue Pop and I found.
When I got out, I found this statue. In another chapter of my visits to Japan, Pop and I got separated here too!
Translation of my Eki Stamp
Had to rest my knee and hip a little before looking for dinner. Lots of selections but wasn’t in the mood to walk more than necessary. So we picked KFC.
Smaller than in the states
The flavour here and texture is different than in the states. A LOT less breading and salt but tastier. Only problem is that it seems greasier too!
Tastes like Calpico drink. Nice and light for dessert
Some sort of mochi. Cannot say I recommend.
That’s it for my day’s venture.
Funny sign
On the way back to our room, there are lots of places to choose from and this place is bluntly honest! I like that!
We decided to go to 7-11 (right below our rooms) and get dessert.
I found some fruit in 7-11 last night and now breakfast is served.
The labyrinth they call Shinjuku Station
Perhaps, we could venture into Shibuya today to see Hochikō.
Early morning view
Expecting a storm to come in later this afternoon, but the sky looks too bright to have rain.
Decided to have this for lunch since it’s close by and RIGHT before we made it into the building it started raining.
This is what you can ask for refills
Tonkatsu lunch
Ton = pork
Katsu = cutlet/ chop etc.
Iced tea
They serve tea like we have water.
Dessert
We were sampling one of fave desserts back home. It’s a mochi like dessert with roasted powdered whatever that powder is and you drizzle the molasses on it - depending on your desired sweetness level. \240It hit the spot! 😊
Cabbage salad dressing in the glass
Katsu sauce in the spouted ceramic ware
Our favourite miso with Pop
Tiny clams Miso
Server buzzer
When you want to order, you press this button and your server will come. I think it’s nicer than them hovering all over you like buzzards! 😡
They also do not come around and check up on you. They only interact with you when you press this button ^
Translation of above
After Boe and I ate, we ventured through the subway mall. They call it a subnade. A mix between subway and promenade. Anyway, we stopped at the capsule store to see if there was anything of interest…
As we continued discovering what else was in the subnade we found 2 markets. The stuff below is their granola that we usually pay big bucks for in LA. Here it is only… $2.37 (if you get the ¥400 version.
We found these duo snacking away
I was looking for Baymax pictured below but we couldn’t find it. 😢
We also found a way out to the regular train station and when we came out of the tube… it was raining. ☔️
Looks fancy but not
Melon soda, regular cola and bubble water
Fried chicken
Bar food only
This should be interesting. We should have gone for the $3 ramen at this rate! Haha
Beef garlic rice
Hamburger egg dish
As you can tell by my lack of descriptions… this was NOT up to our normal Japanese experience.
Time for ramen!
We tried to be Anthony Bourdain and embrace the food culture
Garlic chicken ajillo
Showing comparative size plate
Garlic toast
Size of this plate
So the last place was a bust! Back to our tried and true.
We had rules when we were in Hawaii- Only try ONE place once but because we had a couple of places here we did not really like… we decided to bend the rules for a couple more days.
Grown up chicken nuggets
Ahhhh! That’s much better! Thank you Hidakaya! You saved the day!! 😊
Tonkatsu ramen with garlic and gyozas
Lens filter that I hope will work.
Zunda ~ kiwi crepe
Earl grey peach
I like how they described this!
Sugar mini donuts
We made it to Nakano where Pop wanted us to go immediately! We were about 2 hours too early but we had made it here (2024) without as much problems as we have had in present day. I think it’s all the construction going on in Shinjuku that is throwing us off.
I would have never thought I would see Randy’s Donuts here since it’s an LA thing but good for them. Unfortunately, Randy’s donuts were sold a few years back and the recipes don’t taste the same anymore.
Look at the arrows
Our train just left and now it’s time to visit Nakano Broadway.
Can you figure out this sign? Me neither!
Izakaya Row
That’s what I call it because there are lots of them on the way to the train station.
Red bean paste + sweet potato
Tayaki
My back is killing my hip and we stopped to sit and replenish some lost water from sweating! 🥵
It may be raining but it’s humid rain
Red Bean Paste
This is a thing here in Japan and it was freshly made. So, we stopped to try them. My opinion? 🤙
Sweet Potato
Then we split up for a little bit so I could some place to rest my back and I stumbled upon the hidden food court in the basement!
12 August 2026
Happy birthday, Pop!!
… and found this wonderful looking bakery!
Yakiniku- Japanese style k-bbq
We are here with Pop and for his birthday. In December 2024, Pop and I found this place by accident. Looked good and we said, “why not?!”
Time to head back before my body parts start falling off!
My stash from Nakano
This was all that I picked up in Nakano. Going to the capsule store is always fun! You never know what will come out of the machine.
The Miffy (Nintje) ones actually light up! Lemme turn it on for you… hold da line q
Time Walker
This was the reason we had to go to Japan for a weekend with Pop in 2024. This time around, it was the perfect place for the kids for find some manga and other anime stuff.
Look how many scoops/flavours she got!
The line looked long and my back was killing me… so I passed it up
We ventured deeper into the mall …
Aren’t they the cutest??
The chocolate one is Nintje after spending too much time in Hawaii! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! Haha
I don’t know which -chrome I’m in but that is definitely the right place we had dinner tonight. It’s an upgraded version of yoshinoya and cheaper too!
Matsuja on the right side + Times Square in back left
Bowl size difference - regular vs small
I included last night’s bath surprise so I can remember the order.
Pikachu, totodile, charzard, umbreon, charmander, Sylveon.
Happy Birthday, Mama and Pop!
Well… I don’t have a microwave so Boe recommended Dutch style.
This morning…
Coffee, watermelon and apple tart
We picked up the apple tart yesterday in Nakano Broadway. It was a bakery that I passed with Pop but did not go in that time… so we went in this time and it did not disappoint.
Morning view
On the way to the shrine this is what we found… King Kong!
Mexico in Japan?
Wonder if that says “restaurant”?
Shrine
Naked lady
I found naked guy statue in Tokyo and naked lady statue in Shinjuku.
You see billboards like this all over.
King Kong
Park pathway
Left to right:
Success, mind and good luck
Alter along the way to shrine
This is where you return your amulets
Hanazono Shrine
Steps to shrine
To me this is lunch but here… this is breakfast!
Gulay inside soup
Morning miso soup
We found this place that is supposed to have good bread products. It’s kind of a kombini (convenient store) but for grab and go food.
Coffee jelly
Mystery gate for a thin meter reader
This thin gate was next to daily Yamazaki but it’s thinner than the handle and made me wonder how anyon could fit in there!
Egg salad looks good
As we were walking back, we found a big Muji store and kinokuniya! It’s only of one of our fave bookstores in LA. Below is a sample of the English books I found.
On our walk back to Homebase, I spotted this sign …
Not as cool as my other signs but always 👀
We decided to venture outside because I needed more sumo wrestler bath salt 🤫😊but when we went near the outside door… it was pouring rain so we grabbed a cab.
Pictures can say 1,000 words
In the cab (on the window) was this sticker that says what you can and cannot do in the cab. One would think that in a country as conservative as Japan, they would refrain from doing those things but one did not take into account the tourists.
The cabbie had drop us off somewhere else because the road was closed it too much traffic. I don’t know. Whatever the reason, we had to walk. Good thing too because we found this café inside one of the malls. It was called “Le Cafe - Joël Robuchon”.
I know not many people would know who he is but I do. He’s a famous Michelin star chef that was once Gordon Ramsey’s mentor. Sadly, he passed away on 2018 from pancreatic cancer. In his wake, he left behind these goodies for us to sample 🥰😊
Curry bread (kare pan), focaccia á la saucisse et croissant aux amandes à crème de myrtilles
I cannot say enough how amazing my almond croissant with blueberry filling was. It was perfect for a rainy day with some tea- alas, the line was too long for hot tea & I ended up indulging without it. Oh well! Have to go back again! Haha
Perilous street walking
It was perilous walking the street in the pouring rain and not knowing where you are or where you’re going. You could barely see anything and I was soaked to the bone… even with an umbrella. Okay. I get it. It was my uv parasol but it is still a rain umbrella too. We ended up stopping at Don Quixote to get a slightly bigger for us. It was too much. Yep! You guessed it. As soon as we were done purchasing the rain stopped.
We stopped at the hotel lounge for shaved ice…
Apple soda & apple juice
Earl grey & Peach Shaved Ice
Time for dinner! Haha
As we were making it back to home base, we passed the shrine one last time and asked the cabbie to take us Pepe’s- which happens to be the name of the mall connected to POP’s Prince hotel. He dropped us off in a weird place AGAIN!
We decided on ramen for our last night here because of the weather and it’s great cheap eats!
Tonkatsu Ramen
Cut through this building - something Tower
We took the escalator down, so you can see the crowd size.
Gyoza and miso soup
NOW it’s time to head back to dry land home base.
Potato wedges
Grown up chicken tenders
Can you believe all that was only $15??
There was another ramen not pictured because it happened to the same.
That’s it for walking outside in the rain. Time to head back to…
Oh dear Lord! Is there another concert going on?
Yep!
Some boy band this time. So we had to walk up to go down to our home base somehow.
We check out today and into the Hamacho area (Chuo/Ginza).
Yesterday’s mishap
Red apple croissants
Clouds starting move a little.
Dango - mochi balls with teriyaki sauce
My last morning view
Time to say goodbye, Godzilla!!
Last time we see Godzilla!
Meat pasta with French fries
Found a place to have lunch…
Our cute server
Our new Homebase - Hamacho Hotel
We made it to Nihombashihamacho! A lot different from where we just were. A LOT quieter without that Hollywood feel to it. If you know what I’m implying.
Looks like a small shrine in the “city”
Off to check out the small neighbourhood grocery near the shrine.
Nice loo handle!! 🤩
Tonkatsu meal set
Strawberry ice with dango & black tea biscuit
Chicken cutlet set meal
Our little brown bird came to visit us
We found a 24 hour market across the street from Homebase.
Desk
… and like that… our room is ready
Smaller loo. Much smaller loo
Oooh! Fancy bed lights!
I was waiting for my crew to arrive before heading out to dinner.
The bed
Rained pretty hard in the area last night. In Natita area, 6 people drowned from the torrential downpour.
A sign that the passing storm is over.
I took the crew to Wako tonkatsu (like the one in Shinjuku) in Yodobashi Akiba.
Tonkatsu
Then we headed back to Homebase where we sat in the bar and relaxed.
Peach Melba ice cream with meringue thing
Sorry. Not much to say because I’m tired.
Someone is jet lagged. Poor Mate! I know it will be difficult for him for a few days but he will be okay. Besides, he’s too excited to sleep! At least I know when sunrise is here.
Off to Shinjuku to show him around and maybe the kids will meet up with us there.
Off to Shinjuku to show him around and maybe the kids will meet up with us there.
An early morning walk to the train station produced these finds.
Common benches found here in Japan
How to find out next stop
On our way to Shinjuku
Can’t help but think of Mama ♥️
Someone got his wings! 🥰
I thought he was supposed to be in Bruxelles (Brussels)
Stopped for breakfast at Matsuya (I’ve been calling it Matty’s)
Below is the food court in kabukicho Tower
Our last stop in Shinjuku was to visit Joël Robuchon bakery
Funny warnings in the subway lift in Shinjuku san- chrome station
In Hamachō
A little prayer shrine for animals and childbirth
Simple Japanese breakfast (mine)
Below are some sticker graffiti I see throughout Shinjuku.
Big breakfast but not mine
Got my new Eki stamp from Hamachō Station ♥️
Visited Godzilla one last time
Bus stop benches face the other way here.
Here in Japan, the bus benches face the sidewalk rather than to look at traffic or your bus arriving.
We waited for the kids and found this chocolate cafe in the lobby of Hamachō Hotel. So we decided to give them a whirl.
Hot milk chocolate
Hello Mama!! (Asian Swallowtail)
As I was trying to find a table, I picked this nice one that kept calling out to me. When I looked over my shoulder, there was Mama! ♥️
Iced chocolate milk with ice cream
(Chokorēto ice)
Looks good doesn’t it? Well… the iced chocolate thingy was difficult to eat and we managed to make a mess all over the table! Of course we did! That’s what we do best! Haha
We got bored waiting for the kids so we went to Ginza Tokyo Hands
In Japan there is a HUGE distinction between medical clinic and health clinic. We did not know the difference until just recently - such as last week.
Medical clinic is where you see your doctor for simple or chronic issues; a “health”clinic is, to be blunt, more of a brothel like setting. I don’t know why they call it that, but that is the distinction. That explains the directory picture below.
Meat pasta
We had done a lot of walking today so we just went to the diner across the street. The “robot” diner. I think we will just our not, Lenny. Sounds like a good name for it.
Someone is trying all the beer in this country - Asahi on tap!
Wow! That’s something like $3!
Back home, we were getting this for like $10 on sale!
Corn Potage.
Chicken mushroom dinner
Not one of my most fave dinners
Unagi-don
Pancake with bananas, cream and chocolate drizzle
After dinner, we went to the market for some breakfast for tomorrow.
Introducing Lenny, our server.
I tried Japanese corn postage and it’s actually pretty good. I have to look up a recipe for it.
My latest bathtime find - Dratini
Good night all! See you tomorrow
I wonder what the cost of living is out here!
The prices for fish seems reasonable to me.
Apple pie
One of my better selections! It’s flaky like a puff pastry.
Wow! Perhaps I should apply for training here! Haha
Shrine
It was busy this morning. I wonder why.
On our way to Asakusa to see some shrines and temples but also to see some Japanese crafts. I’m so excited!!
Sign for the shrine below
We made to Asakusa!! I decided it would be nice to check out true Japanese craftsmanships and see what they have here. I’m on the look out for furoshikis and tenuguis. This should be interesting. Apparently, there is a special chopstick craftsman too! Who knew??
Finally found the kids at our meeting stop. We got a little separated by different exits from the train station. Which reminds me… a got a new Eki stamp!
Tōkyo tree and Asahi merch store
Asakusa train stamp (Eki stamp)
Black coffee and strawberry dragon fruit yoghurt drink.
Stay tuned. More to come! 😊
I suppose with it being a weekend, it’s a bit… hella crowded!! 😡
On a good note though, it’s a lot cooler than one would expect!! I forgot to show you that I got my own personalised PASMO card from here (Japan). I also have a Suica card on my phone but the Pasmo is cooler with my name on it! 😊
Blood orange sometning
Whatever sweetness I lost in the apple, it all magically appeared in this drink. It was so so sweet! Not fond of it but at least, I can say I tried it.
Sensō-ji Temple
We went to the tourist information centre and went to the observation deck to get a bird’s eye view. Doesn’t it look scary crowded? Well… I will have you know, it was scarier in person!
Funny name for a bar
Strawberry Mochi
Kaminarimon
Tōkyo Sky Tree
The Number 1 apple pie in the world
I cannot say enough how delicious this was! It was flaky and sweet but not overly sweet.
Kaminarimon in all its glory
Other side of Kaminarimon
We headed back home because it was a bit too crowded for these introverts…
Tachibana Inari Shrine
5+ storey Daiso??!
Looks like some place I may have to check out!!
As we were wandering back from our adventure in Asakusa, I stumbled upon this cute shop close to home.
I guess it’s good to slow down and walk around. Sometimes you see things you take for granted.
Near our home there is a bakery (or 2) within a minute walk! So we tried this place and they were so nice!
Ooof! Cannot recommend this place. Well… I CAN recommend it but holy HELL! It was spicy! I had a level 2 spice and I think it went as high as level 30! I am not a spice wimp but dear Lord! I could not enjoy it.
Level 3 spice with chicken cutlet
Curry version of Salisbury Steak
Mild level 0 spice and it was still spicy!
This was so cool! The little guy inside was talking to us and would turn on each side to talk other people.
It’s getting late! Will chat with you all later!
おやすみ - Oyasumi - good night
おやすみなさい。素敵な夢を。- Oyasuminasai sutenkinayumewo - good night, sweet dreams
My poor guy still has a touch of jet lag but it’s nice for me because that means I get early morning pictures! Haha
Love their vehicles around here!
Nice smooth streets
Latte
Tokyo Stock Exchange
Front of shrine near the grocery
Long Flight latte (latte with an added shot)
Menu of coffee shop
Cold drink menu
Cool bridge structure
Hamachō station to Shinjuku
Waiting here at the station for train to arrive and take us to Shinjuku and then to Nakano Broadway.
Why are we going back, you ask? Thank you for asking! We are going back to play with the capsule stores. Yes it’s plural! There or so many of them! Haha
We are also going back to have Yakiniku for lunch and maybe grab some pastries for later. We shall see.
We were supposed to go to Tōkyo too but it may be too much in one day. Perhaps, Tōkyo needs its own 2 days for exploration. I don’t know yet.
We should see the imperial palace and other tourist places but it’s a bit difficult with the actual tourists around. Some are quite rude!
We made it to Nakano via the train with only one connection. Yippee! Not as many turn arounds as we normally do! Haha
Went to the basement to find a kimono for a co-worker but found the ice place instead. Looks good, eh? \240My flavour was soda ice and my guy’s flavour was coffee (kōhī) I can honestly say, I liked mine! Haha
We stopped at the capsule store and found these little Miffys and decided to have them pose for us! Haha
Excelsior coffee
I was looking for yogurt and got iced latte instead. Oh well.
I will have to remember to get this rice seasoning
I need a haircut!
Not so illiterate NOW! Haha
Hello! Everything is delicious—it’s a delight! We pride ourselves on being a beloved, handcrafted bakery. We prepare a wide variety of fresh-from-the-oven breads, including curry bread, maple melon pan, Camembert cheese bread, and our smooth bacon-wrapped creations. Please be sure to stop by and try them! (French translation^)
I can read the big sign but not what is written on the post! Go figure.
My Japanese is quite limited to:
Ramen o tabemashita
Tonkatsu o tabemashita
Kyō no gogo, ton katsu o tabemasu.
Kazuku to resutoran ni ikimashita.
Ko kazuku to resutoran ni ikimashita ka?
Oh wait! I may know a little more…
Arigatou gozaimasu!
Itadakimasu🙏 (we say this at the beginning of all our meals) it translates to: “we gratefully receive this meal.” In Shintoism they don’t just thank God for the meal but to the plants and animals that gave up their lives so I can live. Mind you we say this and do the sign of the cross too.
Gochisōsama deshita. 🙏😊 translates to: thank you for the feast I gratefully received.
We made it safely back in Hamacho and just in time for a rest. Phew!
I didn’t know there was a Sumo place here!
This is where the train platform lets us off.
The (S10) line of the Shinjuku train
See you all later after I rested and thought of something to do this evening.
This is Italian food with a Japanese interpretation..:
This is what the place was called. I highly recommend.
By the way… you may be wondering what is with all the Pokémon. Well, it’s because this happens to be their 30th anniversary. So why not celebrate all year with them?? Besides, I am not here for much longer. Another 13 days so I want to make the most of my time with them.
Lasagna like but…
Over risotto (also known as short grain rice). You would think it’s a weird combo but I KNOW that Cynch would ❤️ THAT sort of combination! It really was much better than I make it sound. Of course they had pizza but I was in the mood for something saucy.
See? No pasta
My latest buddies - Ditto and Sprigatito
Bath time is over and it’s time for bed. I hope soaking in the hot tub will help my AS (ankylosing spondylitis). It’s gotten better in some ways but in others, it’s getting worse.
Oh well.
I hardly take selfies because that’s just the way I am - especially if I’m not wearing make up but I don’t know how to wear make up in humidity. This is what I look like today:
Someone took his early morning walk to Tokyo Station. Not the same as the one I posted but to think that he walked ALLLLL the way there from Hamacho. It’s a 30 min walk from here. He must have had a nice quiet walk.
We met this senior Japanese guy yesterday at the Nakano train station \240who spoke in English to us. He was telling us that he had studied English (in England) in his youth but had also learned German too. He is a big baseball fan and when he was in San Diego, he went to a Padres game. How cute!
He was also proudly telling us that Japan is #1 in safety. We had to agree 100% with him. It is so safe out here that people do not lock up their bikes! They just kick stand it. Crazy how they are the complete opposite of the Philippines. They self govern. Meaning that they do not need the 10 commandments posted on every corner to remind them of their obligations. They just do it or perhaps, they don’t do it.
Children are different here as well. At the restaurant last night, there was a group of moms and their children who sat near us and once settled in, the small children (all around five and/or younger) started to do their chores. It was a sort of all you can eat place (more like all you can drink) and they grabbed some children size bowls/plates and began setting the table for themselves. They also grabbed chopsticks to be given to each person, parents included. They seem to be more well behaved and they already know their obligations to society. Their religion/philosophy means they believe in karma hitting them NOW rather than being judged later.
Stopped for breakfast. Not my cuppa coffee. I don’t like warm sandwiches with lettuce inside. Maybe just get some ham and bread separately next time. The boulangerie next door makes fabulous baguettes and the grocery on the corner carries sandwich meat. Done & done 😊
You would think that with my jumbo suitcases, I would actually have some clothing inside but the reality is, I do not 🤫. I had to donate a few of my belongings when I was in Hawaii because they were too big. So we’re off to Shinjuku … AGAIN, to find something to wear.
I think my guy’s body has finally decided to make him slow down because he has a minor cold. Oh well… a bowl of ramen would have been just the ticket for him! Haha \240 Alas, he is not a ramen person so he has to remain grounded.
We are back in Shinjuku to find some clothing. The horrors! 🤣🤪
Found this cute guy!
This little guy sparks much joy!!
My new travel buddy!
I forgot my sunbrella (both for shade and rain) in the car at home so I had to invest in another and this one is faaaaaar less heavy than the last! “I am satisfied with my care.” - Big Hero 6 (Baymax)
We needed a place to rest my hip and what better place than a coffee shop?! Maybe some place that serves food rather than snacks but I’m okay with it here at Excelsior Caffé. They have nice ice.
I was finally able to find clothing and I do hope it fits!
Yep! That IS a hole in the ground!
Hard pass from me! ^
Oooh! Maybe I can make a tiny Japanese village for my bookcase
Oooh! Special blend (quite satisfying!)
Prosciutto and arugula pizza
Both were quite tasty. I think, weirdly enough, I preferred the carbonara version.
Brown sugar shaved ice.
This is the not so fancy toilet sign
Shrine/temple
This is where the monks come to learn how to go on missions.
This building shares space with our fave store - Hands
Takashimaya is a FANNNNNNNNCY store. Similar to our Nordstrom’s or Bloomingdale’s but I think there is one fancier than this one called Isetan. I THINK it’s fancier. Not certain.
Anyway, at this “fancy” store/mall, I figured that the toilets would be fancy too. Ummm… that doesn’t look fancy AT ALL!!
I did not know exactly how to use it without falling or wetting myself… so I waited for the other stalls to open.
Ready for my coffee
Carbonara Pizza
Mint Blanc cake
Oh noooo! I forgot the other cake! Earl Grey Sponge cake. 🍰
As we were making it back down through the store… I stopped this cool nano block creation
Ultraman turns 50 this year!
We stopped at a place called Mia Bocca. It’s basically Japanese interpretation of Italian food.
I must say… it’s really not THAT bad but what do I know about Italian food? I haven’t been to Italy yet.
Egg living room and me
That is my translation of the above sign. Unless they are using Salon as salon and no translation needed then it would be Egg Salon and me. Go figure! Haha
This place is good but it was so crowded so we passed for lunch but came back around for coffee and pastries - normal mirienda time.
I found this cool nano (mini version of Legos) and they had pretty much everything that represents Tokyo. Pretty cool, eh?
Oh no! Too blurry to read the others but people were rushing me!
I don’t know what it is about Sumikogurushi that I just adore! Maybe because they have the same body type as me?! Hehe
The bus stop bench is facing the other way
And THIS is why I did not rent a car here
Call me Wimpy but I was not about to drive here in Japan. I cannot read the signs and they drive on the other side like the Brits. I would be too freaked to even TRY it.
My latest addition from the capsule vender! Haha
Ah! Our beloved ramen place - Hidakaya
There is my ramen!
Gyoza Girl got her dream dinner
One last stop at Family Mart and I will call it a day 🤫
I absolutely needed fruit! This is what I could find at the Kombini store. It works, although I’m super full!
My poor guy is still sick. He probably caught something before he arrived here and it manifested yesterday. Oh well… he’s knocked out and it’s sad that he’s missing Japan because he’s sleeping.
Breakfast at Cafe Gusto (affectionately called Robo Cafe!)
Mine is only the toast, egg and miso soup.
Clouds look a little ominous! I hope it doesn’t rain because I forgot my umbrella.
… I have parasol but not really an umbrella. The rain here comes with wind and my poor parasol flips and I end up getting wetter than without cover.
Oh well… we decided to go into Shibuya today to see what we can find there.
There is our downward descent into the bowels of the metro system. I wonder if I have time for a nap! Hehe haha
The famous Shibuya Crossing
We made it to Shibuya. I think we need to come back so My Guy can see it too. I know he would love it. I think it would be nicer in the evening but since he’s not feeling well, I don’t know how much I can push him.
We also found…
Hachiko!
Story has it that Hachiko greeted his master everyday after work but one day, his master did not return but Hachiko kept waiting by the station until he passed away.
We found this place that had an open table for us so we rushed in to grab it!
When was the last you saw me drink beer?
Smash burger (with fried egg)
Truffle fries
Wow! They call it a WC here too! Hehe haha
Oh what a long way up!
We stopped at the chocolate cafe in the hotel. They really DO know their coffee and chocolate.
Chocolate shaved “ice”
The one above is chocolate shaved ice… cream. Not just watery ice but actual ice cream! Holy Moses! Was it good and I don’t like chocolate ice cream that much. Actually, I’m really picky about my chocolate and it’s not one of my go-to anything.
On our way BACK to Shibuya for dinner. It will be interesting to see if at night. It should be a bit cooler but also all lit up 🤩
But first a walk to the metro station
What sort of door is THAT ^?
As we were walking to the metro station, I saw this little door besides the entrance door. Looks peculiar but what do I know? It could actually be a window for all I know.
We made it to Shibuya… AGAIN- but this was only to have dinner and see the Shibuya Scramble happening.
Barefoot drummer
The Shibuya Scrample
Hachinko
Paying our respects to Hachinko
Yakiniku time
Ready, get set GOOOOOOOOO!
The crowd waiting to do the Shibuya Scramble
NGL ( not gunna lie), there were a lot of dumb people doing weird things at the Scramble! They would just STOP to take a dumb selfie as people were trying to walk by. It’s okay if you didn’t get stuck behind the selfish selfies… but I got stuck a few times. So irritating!
Dance, dance revolution!
Don’t know what he was dancing to but he was grooving along as if to his own drummer! Haha \240Or was he dancing to the barefoot drummer? Who knows!! Maybe he’s taping an audition? Well, whatever he was doing, it was entertaining! Hehe
Found some cool art work at a Pop up
That’s it for tonight. Made it home safely 😊
We finally figured out the train station maze with less and less confusion. Actually walking through it as if we know where we’re going! Haha
Looks like the villagers have been fed
We found this coffee shop by chance and thought we would stop in. This is our second time here but first time taking the kids.
We had no idea what it was called. At first we thought it was “no death to coffee” because of some art work around the place. So I had to look it up. It’s called “Single O”. I think “No Death to Coffee” sounds better.
I digressed, as usual. Below are snaps of our lattes.
I think my guy is feeling better.
Banana bread cold brew latte
Regular milk latte
Oat milk latte
We spotted these planters on our walk. As you can see, they can be moved and placed anywhere but also can be stored when not in use. They are made of recycled material! I will need to find one when I get to my home. I’m sure somewhere in the EU, there will be some sort of similar design.
On our way to Tokyo station to find a hop on, hop off bus to take us on a tour. See you all soon
Phew! Finally made it out of the room. The problem was that my hip has been acting up a lot lately. It’s because of my AS.
Since I have time, I can explain what AS (ankylosing spondylitis) is- \240Ankylosing spondylitis, also called axial spondyloarthritis, is a type of inflammatory disease that mainly affects the spine. Over time, the inflammation can cause some of the bones in the spine, called vertebrae, to fuse together. This fusing makes the spine less flexible and can lead to a hunched posture. If the joints in the chest are affected, it may become harder to take deep breaths. (Per Mayo Clinic). My internist suspected I had AS but it needed to be confirmed by a rheumatologist. My blood work came back that I was positive for HLA-B27. Then my images came back that my spine was starting to fuse in the lower LOWER back (sacroiliac spine). My cervical spine on the other hand, had already been fused by my neurosurgeon who had diagnosed me with OPLL (ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament). Cervical spine is from your skull to your shoulders (c = cervical). My fusion is from C2-T1. T= thoracic. The thoracic region is the middle of your back. It’s from your shoulders to middle. It’s T1-T12.
I know it sounds all technical but I hope I explained where you can understand me better. I often wonder WHY I am inflicted in my spine but it has also affect bilateral (both sides) shoulders, chest and hips. That’s why I have problems with my knee. It’s bearing the weight that I take off my hip to compensate the numbness in my leg. It’s not the same as sciatica. Sciatica is when the sciatic nerve is trapped causing numbness and tingling in your upper leg. Looks like our train has landed in transfer platform.
This place has the most amazing coffee soft serve with coffee jelly! It makes navigating through the Tokyo station maze worth it. I know you may say not but you haven’t tried it!
Anyway… as I wait for it to arrive… this is what we had for lunch
Anchovy + black olive pizza
Japanese beef curry
I can only say meh. It was a beer hall so what do I expect?
This is the reason I came here. The only reason I agreed to coming here! You would too if you could taste this coffee soft serve with coffee jelly.
But… the apple tartin is nothing to sneeze at! It is so delicious! I even had to look up at recipe for it! I will get it done one day.
German platter of meat
We made it to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. It’s so beautiful here
You would never guess there was a place so serene in a concrete jungle!
Cross the bridge
The moat of the palace?
Looks a little like Central Park
Time for me to move a little bit so I don’t stiffen up more. See you all soon.
The Imperial Palace
Since I cannot walk all the way to the palace… I decided to hang back at Starbies until my hip recovers from the trek we just made from the station.
This is what the inside looks like at this Starbies that is connected to the “Rest House”.
Just passing on the street
This is pretty cool that when you read it… you can smile too.
Ham pizza
Chicken cutlet dinner
Doria?
Tonkatsu set dinner
Reminds me of “Graveyard of the Fireflies”
Apple “pie”
Apple pie here is different. It’s more like puff pastry with apples on top. Love it! Not thick crust like an American apple pie and not overwhelmingly stacked with apples inside like a Dutch apple taart.
Forgot to mention that we’re at the Robot diner… again! Only because it’s so close to home and my body hurts a lot!
Here in Japan, we pay what they say. No tip included in there because it’s considered an insult. There is no hidden fee. In the Philippines, they were adding in the gratuity already and some places in the states, also add the gratuity in too. Here in Japan… you don’t have to worry. Food is a lot less expensive here too.
Blue soda shaved ice
I know, I know… here again?? As I said, it’s close to home and inexpensive. For 2 people breakfast, it’s ¥1208 ($7.60 usd). I seriously doubt you can find something like that stateside. But what do I know? I haven’t eaten breakfast in LA in forever! Or what seems like forever.
My latest addition
Meet Ditto and Quaxly
Our “home”
Most expensive breakfast on menu
I keep forgetting to tell you that it’s an all you can drink when you get the set meal. \240Anyway, the above meal is ¥980= $5.71 usd. It comes with the hamburger patty and gravy + salad + soup + toast, rice or pancake (that’s an up charge on pancake) and drink bar. Where can you find THAT stateside??!
Toei Shrine
The Toei Shrine (陶栄神社, Toei-jinja), established in 1969 within the grounds of Hamamachi Shrine in Nihonbashi-Hamacho, Chuo City, Tokyo, honors Japan’s ceramic heritage. It preserves the history of an Edo-period wholesale district historically known for chinaware and tile merchants. (Per Google Gemini)
I guess you figured out that our home base is Nihonbashi-Hamacho. There is another town close by called Ōtemachi. The translation is: Great Hand town. I like that name. Sounds kinda cool like Driehuis/Driehuizen or Koedijk - Dutch towns (3 house/3 houses (- different villages) and cow dike).
Okay. Time to get ready to head into Tokyo again but also, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Asakusa and Akihabara today. Sounds like a lot to me. This evening we are supposed to go to a celebration/festival.
I cannot eat a big breakfast …
Never could but I need the energy to walk around town! 🤪
Going on a tour today to see all those places on the map. At least we’re not walking it! Phew!
The Sacred Gingko Tree
Whilst sitting under the Sacred Gingko tree… I spotted this!
Fresh squeezed iced orange juice vending machine!! \240🥰🤩
I should have taken a pic before I started drinking
This is a tiny door!
Buddha statues
I’m not great at knowing my Buddha statues but here are some near the Buddha temple.
The ice cream place we tried in Nakano Broadway should have had these 2
Someone was definitely parched
Cool ramen guy
Some testing bird
Mini wooden tsinelas! 🥰
I think this is the shrine for mothers
Perhaps, this shrine is for people trying to have children? I don’t know. I stopped and prayed for my own mama to ask her to watch over us and Pop but also to thank her for being my mama.
Tōkyo Sky Tree
My guy barely fits!
He’d have to go in sideways like a crab, but then how big is inside???
Resting after walking in the heat.
Pretty cool! May have to stop there one day- Huis Ten Bosch!
I finally found the Japanese strawberries on a stick
Kabuki.
Akihabara ^
Dragon decoration on this bridge
Our tour bus 😊
Pasta vongole
Sake cocktail with Japanese whisky
Ending the evening with cocktails at the Hotel Restaurant/bar ♥️😘
Sausage pizza
Doria with meat sauce
On our way to the Tōkyo Skytree for breakfast. We are using the subway or metro or whatever to get there and I must say, the Japanese punctuality is remarkable! Love it lots. I wish they had a reliable metro system in the Philippines. It will still take decades for something to happen. I don’t know. May not even be in this lifetime.
Anyway… I will continue to live in my Japanese wonder bubble for a little longer 🥰
As you can see, we made it to Skytree!
Who knew there was a whole mall in here too?!
Looks like orange chocolate croissant
We found this place called “Penny Lane”. \240I think it’s sort of a tribute to the Beatles. Cute little cafe.
We made it up the Skytree and now to finish getting last minute things like more bath bombs! Haha \240joking lang, Sinigang!
Z line from Hamacho to Skytree then (Z)Sumiyoshi line to (S) Shinjuku line
All that to get here…
We are trying to embrace our inner Anthony Bourdain but some things are not easy to do. For instance… reading.
We have NOOOOOO clue what this is but it looks like it could be cold but it was warm and pudding like.
Interesting texture but I think we agreed that we like it! 🤫🫣
My latest bath buddy - Wolfchan and my Tokyo bus (from last night)
Black sesame cheesecake
Lamb
My shirt is supposed to be light beige not mocha
Below are pix from Hamacho
Some sort of melon dessert
Grilled pork shoulder
Some tea cocktail
There was an earthquake at 2am today. The center was Ibaraki but we’re in the Tokyo area. The swaying was in a “Blessing” motion north-south then east - west. Before ALL the shaking was felt, my phone was screaming at us EARTHQUAKE (in a calm voice) repeatedly (about 5 times, I think). That was pretty cool.
After the shaking, we waited a little for aftershocks and then went back to bed. We heard some frantic running in our hallway, the floor above and below. Being from California, it’s nothing new to us. But coming from certain parts of Europe like the Netherlands (we heard some Dutch spoken in the lobby) or Germany, they would be trying to escape.
Today, we are off to Ginza. The sun is out now but we have 60% chance of rain. We shall bring out umbrella with us this time.
I also want to see the Nihonbashi Kirin Bridge up close and personal. They are close together.
The kids found this contraption and it’s awesome! We may have to find one for ourselves too! What is it, you ask? It’s a travel clothing dryer!
We have discovered that all things here are awesome - as in, you’re awestruck by the ingenuity, except their coin laundry dryers. Even their washers are questionable but I have been hand washing a lot of my things and drying has been difficult.
I have not tried the Baskin-Robbins out here because I can get it stateside but now I’m wondering how it would taste here. So far any sweets that we have tried have MOSTLY been on the Asian side - meaning, less sweet than American standards. So I have been enjoying it plenty!
As with EU, I am also not lactose sensitive/intolerant here as I am with the states. They must do something differently r
Starbucks Reserve - Ginza
Phew! Finally some coffee! We are a tad late today for obvious reasons last night but with a jolt of caffeine, I should be just fine. I have gotten used to Auntie Zeny’s breakfast- 1 hard boiled egg, toast and orange (juice) with coffee. They have LOTS of places here that specialise in sweet potato everything- buns, sticks, plain steamed sweet potatoes etc! I must say that it is delicious. Everything is usually nicer when I don’t have to make it 🤫. \240Most days, I really don’t mind but for some reason, making breakfast has not been something that I have ever enjoyed making - well, except for bread! Haha
Today’s agenda is to make our own chopsticks! This will be a fun souvenir! I can’t wait! 🥰
We got turned away from this Spanish place (obviously… maybe because it was a Michelin restaurant) because we did not have a reservation. So we ventured on the street and found this tonkatsu place
Lady version tonkatsu
And tropen tonkatsu
Regular tonkatsu
Not that I can read the name
As we started exploring again, we found this cool window display and…
White peach with lemon powder
It’s so good! Mine was refreshing but maybe because it was fruity flavour. 🥰
This cute chocolate factory. So we ventured in.
Left to right: white peach, passionfruit and chocolate
Boy! I look tired and like I got a LOT of sun out here!
Left to right: Seiko building and Brown building is original luxury shopping in Japan
Ginza
I don’t know why but the streets were barren today of traffic. They closed off the street, which is great for pedestrians, but not cabs.
It’s Pop again!
Pop and his luxury goods 😳🤩
Thinking of Pop ♥️
Looks like we’re fading! Haha
On our way to dinner… this little pup was waiting for their master. Made me miss Lola ♥️
Chicken kariaage (Japanese chicken nuggets)
If you get a chance to try these anywhere… you should. Then again, not all places are equal
I know it doesn’t looks like much but this has been one of my new finds here in Japan. It’s called…
Corn potage
It’s creamed corn soup but usually has no “chunk” of anything in it. It’s supposed to have only 2 ingredients- cream and corn. That’s it. It’s so simple and naturally sweet. It’s served warm but could easily be enjoyed at room temp or even cold for breakfast.
https://www.teamlab.art/e/planets/
Today we are going to an art museum (link above). We have not hit ANY museums on this trip but this one is special.
Back to the Skytree
On a mission for Marvel goods for Sean and Brian. I hope we’re successful because the other store he sent the link for is waaaaaaaay over there.
Breakfast is served
This tastes like pear and almond croissants. The pastries here have not disappointed us yet. We can only eat so much and some we have repeated frequently because by the end of the day, we’re just so tired and cannot explore more than our bodies will take us.
I’m sure my writings are boring to you because it’s stuff that we like to do and I apologise for being repetitive and boring but then again, it IS my journal after all! Haha… So \240sorry, not sorry!
Not so easy to read but it DID have some stuff in a language I CAN read! Haha
You would think that we gained at LEAST 100kg with all my foodie pix but this is from Penny Lane which is a bakery pub. Sounds funny but it works for them.
#2 with yuzu \240butterfly pea tea.
Okay. Off to complete our mission.
Today’s sampling tray #1
We found this cute cafe for all those who love Curious George! It’s super cute inside too.
This guy is popular
I should have snapped a pic of the development of the tower. It was built as reception for everything. Or was Tokyo towers? No. I think I was right. It’s for communication reception like tv, mobile phones etc.
We got a little turned around and ended up at the aquarium when we were not supposed to be there. Completely different building! 😳
But… have no fear! Miffy showed us the correct path.
Shaka-Shaka,Spidey! 🤙
Made it back to the sub station
Can’t believe we made it to the station in one piece! I have been pushing it with the walking (sweating more than walking!) and at times felt like I would leave my hip behind!
Mission completed
I can’t believe that we have not gone to the Pokémon centre yet! I hope we can find it before leaving the Kanto region.
I hope this is the correct location.
What is different from all those overpasses that I posted?
I will give you time to think.
Same thing with these sidewalks. Notice anything different?
This looks like a cool place. Don’t know what it is
Monsoon heading our way
Around here, things are significantly different from other places I have visited the last 12 months. I don’t know if you could spot the differences but Pop brought it to my attention when I was here with him - and now I’m sharing with you
Here is my beef bowl with miso soup
They always serve with miso soup, which I don’t mind at all.
Reminds me of Black Bear Diner
The things you don’t notice when you live here or there. I did not notice the bear last time we were in the area but as I had time to pay attention, it was nice to see.
Matsuya
Welcome to Team Labs Planet. Such a cool experience!!
My pictures do NOT do it justice but something you have to experience for yourself. Really… do not miss this place when you visit Tōkyo! They did a remarkable job 🤩
The next room is not advised to enter because well… Boe called it the vertigo room
Explanation of the vertigo room
The next room to experience is the Garden
Close up
The waterfall
The next room has no picture because I did not go into it. It’s like walking on a waterbed. There are ropes along the wall but with my knee and hip, I had to take the detour! Haha
The Vertigo Room.
It had things falling and the images were swirling at a tilt that honestly, you felt like we’re having a bad vertigo spell. I have included a vid clip of how it looks
It looks murky and muddy but not
You walk into THIS room with the koi fish swimming at your feet and around your legs
Have you ever gone to an art museum where you are barefooted? Well, you need to come here and find out what it’s like.
Explanation of the art piece
Then the next room, the water came up to our knees (as Boe is demonstrating)
Looks like we are frolicking in the garden
This room had live orchids that move up and down as they grow.
As you walk in, you have to remove your shoes and socks. You walk up this small hallway when you feel you’re walking in water. It’s because you are! There is a waterfall at the end of the road
The bubble room
Like I said, my pix are not as great as being there in person
The room of infinite lights and crystals
See all the orchids??
Lastly we went to the moss room.
Below are all clips of my experiences at Team Labs art museum
It was all nice a cool inside but when we went to the garden… it was like a greenhouse! Hot and humid! More humidity is all I need! So we took a break and grab some ice cream and green tea.
Goodbye this ward of Tokyo! It was so much fun!!
After all that schlepping… this is what I ended up walking. I think my metrics are lying but I will take it! Haha
Yuzu sorbet + green tea
The yuzu was so tart!! Not trying THAT again
My latest bath buddy ^ the “Ice Bear” (as it’s called in Dutch but spelled differently)
Her name is Shirokuma ♥️
To get rid of the yuzu (which normally I love in small doses) Boe picked up this ice cream sandwich for me. Ohmymelonstars!! Truly the best I have had here!!
Peacock store is a 24 hour market across the street from home. This is the view from the plaza.
This building has an Aston-Martin training centre. I wonder if it’s for training the testers because I’m all for it! More than likely it’s for the sales team but one likes to think positively! 😊
We’re waiting for the kids to arrive for a meet up breakfast before our next adventure. I will keep the suspense going for a little while longer!
I know that we will be in a state when we get home tonight so… I’m preparing myself for doing barely nothing tomorrow. I have to start packing and doing last minute things like getting a new pair (or 2) of glasses. 🤓 or maybe just do the simple route and get convertible glasses and sunglasses. Who knows! I will cross that bridge tomorrow in Shibuya.
Being here has taught me a lot about an isolated culture and how they have withstood the test of time with resilience and ingenuity. I would always tell my kids, “adversity builds ingenuity”. Meaning that when something is broken, you come up with better ideas to make it work again. It’s not always the simplest solution such as tape or rope because for some things it won’t work. But to me, the Japanese culture has shown me that their resilience and ingenuity has created such a great society. It’s not just how their country was decimated into practically nothing but they way they came out of nothing. Their society has grown from repairing their government along with their homes. They had a chance to recreate into something more prosperous than we have stateside.
Our current situation back home is leaning too much on religion as a reason to either place blame as a scapegoat or to manipulate the current events based on religion. Religion should always start in the home and heart. Not to be forced on others because we all do not share the same gods. In the world of religions, it’s about being good in your heart and the blessings from your god will be bestowed upon you. When religion is forced on you, then you rebel against the machine. It’s not how you were taught at home. Your religion conflicts with my religion and therefore chaos ensues. This is why you should allow for religion to flow freely through your heart and soul and not condemn others for not sharing in your beliefs. In the Shinto religion (to mix with catholic theology), everything has a soul and heart. Therefore, when they say grace over their meals, it means more than empty words. They truly feel grateful for the animals and/or plants that gave up their lives so we can thrive and survive. It’s not just thanking God for the food but also the thanking the cook who made it, the beings that gave up their souls to nourish me and that is the meaning of their religion compared to using it as a weapon. There is no fighting amongst them to say which religion is better- it’s not about being better than another religion, it’s about being a better you. All religions are the same in that sense- God will grant you eternal happiness when you sacrifice taking the easy route and working hard and diligently to being a better you. I know of no religion that preaches being lazy, taking others for granted, and expecting the pearly gates to welcome you.
Why did I go into a religion rant? Because here, their religion is entwined to their culture. They ALL put into practice what they have been taught since their first breath. They take care of not only themselves but their families- which includes friends, colleagues and neighbours. They are constantly concerned about others whether it is an elderly on the train without a seat or having priority lifts/sesting. They don’t wear obnoxious perfume because others may find it uncomfortable. They bow deeply when they have failed to meet your expectations. This is what I mean about your religion should come from home, heart and soul.
Don’t get me wrong. This is not a utopian society. They have their own grievances and complaints. I’m just saying that stateside, they could learn some lessons from the ONLY society that understands nuclear decimation!
Other societies also had great war devastation but they did not prosper as well as Japan. For instance, the Philippines also had to rebuild and from the gravel and ashes they rebuilt into a corrupt system. They keep preaching that they will make it better but no one has been able to make the Philippines into a phoenix. It did not burn down and grow from ashes. It’s still ashes when you compare it to Japan. In recent years, we had wars in Vietnam and Korea and they have done WAAAAAAY better than the Philippines and the Filipinos refuse to change their ways. They are too comfortable in a corrupt system. It’s sad to see.
Breakfast arrived. See you all later!
I like how long the name is at the location so I’m keeping it! 🤫
We are on our walk to the subway station and wanted to point out some simple innovation that would work back home but no one things of them.
Instead of just cones, they created these borders using PVC pipes and a ring that fits perfectly on the cone top.
Did you figure out where we’re going yet?
Train and highway overpass
Park
Memorial plaque??
The other side of the overpass
What we saw throughout Tōkyo Disney Sea. We picked the smaller park for ease and it’s not as crowded as it could have been pre-Covid but crowded enough. Makes me wonder what the Tōkyo Disney side would have been like. Maybe next time we will hit universal studios Tōkyo in the fall for Harry Potter things 🤫
Found some popcorn!
Can’t visit DL without popcorn. I’ve always been like this! So I’ve tried regular, soy sauce and butter and waiting for truffles to arrive.
There is also milk chocolate flavour and garlic shrimp which I would love to try but alas… I did not bring any Benadryl 😫
Pulled pork burger
You’re driving on the wrong side!!
Those green things are mochi balls. Texture was interesting
The mochi balls we’re a bit interesting. It came in 3 flavours inside- chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Strawberry was the best.
Orange sparkling tea, chicken nuggets and cold corn soup.
At least I know it would be okay to do my corn potage cold
These are the last of my pictures from Tōkyo DisneySea. We had such a great time in the smaller park but with the heat + humidity… caused us to be a little sluggish manoeuvring around. It wasn’t THAT crowded. We expected it to be worse but you should definitely go as Disney fan or maybe just go to bring out the inner child in you too! “…met een luisterend oor voor het kind in jezelf, zou je eindelijk weer zijn wie bent.” - Marco Borsato (English translation: -“by listening to the child in your heart, you could finally be who you truly are.”)
Next time, we will definitely have to hit Tōkyo Disney 🤫
Ended with cocktails at the hotel.
Good night all! Sweet dreams 😴
We spent most of the day in Shibuya doing last minute things. Actually, we only needed to do ONE thing and the rest was just killing time.
I got a new pair (or 2) of glasses today at Jin’s. I don’t like progressive glasses because I cannot use them correctly. But, I do believe my father was the same way. He only wanted bi-focal rather than progressive. So I needed a pair for driving and a pair for reading. It will work until I get contact lenses again. That can wait for another day 😊
On the hop on/hop off bus.
That lady in the background was quite an annoying American she kept standing up, testing different seats and whatever she wanted to do.
Grand Zee ♥️
The bull tamers! Haha

I spent most of the time on the train playing with my caricatures. What do you think?
Offer place with really good coffee
I wish I can remember the name but perhaps it was written in Japanese and that wouldn’t do my any good. Normally, I would stop to take a pic of the place name but I was in too much pain today.

The kids were raving about this burger but since we just ate breakfast, I wasn’t that hungry. I had 2 bites of my burger and skedaddled! Hehe it was good, don’t get me wrong but I wasn’t hungry.

Apple “pie”
Can’t remember name
This is a bowl of nata de coco (not in syrup & tasted as if it were rinsed of it) with fresh fruit, red bean paste and ice cream. On the side, is supposed to be brown sugar syrup (that’s what they call it here) but has a molasses taste.
The dish was actually good! No gonna lie
Chicken kariaage, unagi-don, miso soup and some radish side dish
Typical weather for us.
I could tolerate the 35°C (barely) back on sylmar, but with 78% humidity… this is torture!! I have been watching what the locals do here and have made adjustments to my attire, behaviour, and have chosen to remain cool 😎.
That’s it for tonight. See you tomorrow.
Olaf! My latest bath buddy
There was a time, that I thought, \240my bath buddy from the evening before, would tell me what the weather or day had in store for me. The last 2 seem to tell me that I am in for some cold weather in my future. We shall see.
Dinner is served (@ Robo Cafe)
I know we eat here quite a bit but by the end of the day and walking roughly 15-20,000 steps… this is the best we can do. We are thoroughly broken and exhausted by the time dinner time comes around. You won’t believe me but it’s mostly the heat and crowds that are torture for us.
This place was too good to pass up! They really only have coffee but that’s okay. It’s pretty good and across the street from home.
This was the ONLY place Pop had planned to go to.
The only way to use a toilet around here is to grab coffee (コーヒー) kōhi or iced tea.
For our last evening here in Japan, we decided to have one last drink to end our stay here.
It has been such a new an eye opener here especially since I had been to the Philippines just a few months prior and
Our last few hours here 😢 and we will actually miss Tōkyo. We have already started making plans to come back but not stay in Tōkyo for more than a couple of nights. We have other towns to see and experience. The next time though, I have to be more literate 😳. Not knowing what things say could something that I don’t want to experience.
We checked out of the hotel at around 11ish and headed directly to the Haneda to check our baggages in. Our flight does not depart until 9pm but we had to check out of the hotel but also wanted time to do something outside of the area.
After checking in our bags, we headed over to Tokyo Station so we wouldn’t be stuck at the airport for so many hours - 8 hours to be exact!
