#18: Sailing in Santorini: Day 2

Throughout this trip we have had experiences where I think to myself, it just can’t get any better.

And then it does.

For our 2nd day in Santorini, we went on a private catamaran tour around the island - HUGE thanks to Taylor!

But first, we endured a harrowing ride there. Our driver picked us up in a large van, and as with most locals, drove fast, with little regard to traffic laws - often on narrow, winding roads, overlooking the cliffs.

It was a nail biter; little did I know, it would get much worse.

There was a long narrow road leading to the bay. And I mean long. I’m not talking about the length of a driveway; I’m guessing it was at least a mile, although it felt like ten.

Our driver proceeded to turn the van around and start driving backwards down said road. Fast. With lots of other tour vans, cars, and quads on the road.

I thought we were going to die.

I couldn’t bear to look most of the way, and I wasn’t the only one in our group who covered their eyes.

Below is a video I took the next day of a different van doing this same thing, but this driver was going much slower than ours.

This video is tame in comparison, but it at least gives you an idea.

It was insane.

When I got out of the car, and found my voice again, I meekly asked him why; he said it was because there is usually not enough room for them to turn around at the bottom.

I think they do it to scare the tourists half to death.

Anyway, the harbor was beautiful, and I was relieved to be trading the van in for a boat.

We quickly set sail. This is looking back...

We had lots of fun taking pictures on the boat. Between all of us, we took well over 1000 pictures.

But don’t worry, I’m only posting a fraction of them here.

My girls...

My guy...

There were two large nets on the front of the boat that were a lot of fun to ride on.

Note in the picture above the different colors of the water. It was like this everywhere and even more beautiful in person.

Santorini is so many shades of blue.

We stopped several times to swim.

One of the places is near a volcano they say could erupt in a few years.

They explained the water in that area is full of sulphur. It can stain light colors and your skin if you touch the rocks. But they also said it has healing properties and is really good for your skin.

The water was so clear you could see all the way to the bottom, even in deep water, and it seemed more salty than the ocean back home.

We had lots of fun jumping off the boat... David was up first...

Midday, the crew made us the most delicious lunch; no easy feat with a very small kitchen.

It was so relaxing and so beautiful. It was just perfect and we were all thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

*Most of you know Glenn has 3 boys and I have 3 girls, so we often get teased about being the Brady Bunch. After lunch, we decided we needed a new nickname; David came up with The Boujee Bunch.

Later that night when we went to dinner and consternated over whether to order the amazing looking $15 cocktails, reality came crashing back in and we reluctantly agreed a more appropriate name would be The Budget Bunch. 😆

All too soon, it was time to start heading back. It was really cool to see the island from a different perspective.

Can’t even imagine trying to walk up that path.

At Taylor’s request, we sailed the last part of the tour, which was a really cool experience

The whole day was a really cool experience.

And that evening, we once again enjoyed wonderful food, with another beautiful sunset. We even ordered a couple of those fancy drinks.

I could get used to this. 😊
