Our home for the next 5 months is an aft cabin #6098.
The world cruise is upon us, 66 days until we board. \240We have booked dining, shore excursions, applied for our VISA’s and are starting packing lists. \240We have many awesome shore excursions and look forward to all the amazing adventures. Last week we got several travel shots and we are getting more this week to include typhoid and polio booster. \240 In early November we will get flu shots and a COVID booster.
We are gathering items to pack for luggage forward to be picked up December 9th.
Our home for the next 5 months is an aft cabin #6098.
Today is an exciting day we board 30 days from today. \240We were able to check in and print our boarding passes today, the trip is getting closer and more real everyday!
We received FedEx notice that our passports with visas for Australia, New Zealand. India, Vietnam, Isarel and several other countries will be delivered tomorrow. \240 Great to have pur passports back. \240 Jeff also completed our VeriFLY application with Viking today. \240We are nearly ready to go aside from packing.
Our bags are packed and ready to be picked up tomorrow by Luggage Forward. \240 We primarily packed 5 months of personal care and grooming items. \240 I hope we use them all and won’t bring any back. \240Jeff also added several pairs of shoes and I added a couple jackets and sandals. \240 We are so excited only 16 days until we fly and we board the next day. \240
Jeff went to the bank to get cash for the trip he wanted banded money in $1.00,$5.00 and $10.00 denominations. \240We aren’t going to get currency for each country as most will take new US dollars. \240One passenger did get currency for each location. \240
We played our final round of golf, prior to our trip today — The Reindeer Dash at our club. \240 We didn’t win, but had a great time
Our kids came down for an early Christmas celebration. \240In the afternoon we watched football and enjoyed a Bloody Mary bar. \240We opened gifts and had a wonderful dinner of salad, rare prime rib, noodles, and asparagus. \240 \240Jeff served a 1995 Burgess Cabernet with dinner. \240 Great times!
One of our last Tucson sunsets
Today we packed for our 5 month cruise. \240 Frankly it was daunting, what to take what not to pack? \240The cleaners were here early and when they left at noon we got started, finally finishing after 5:00 pm. \240It was a long afternoon followed by a shower and cocktail. \240I’m not sure I have what I need for 5 months, \240but we will make it work. \240 I think when we get back I won’t wear these clothes for a long while.
Tomorrow we are taking Olivia to her Aunt Alane and Uncle Steve’s house for 5 months. \240 She doesn’t have a clue how much her world will change tomorrow. \240 We will miss her! \240 We have friends taking us to an airport hotel as we fly at 6:00 AM on Wednesday. \240 We are so excited!
We zipped up the suitcases and added a “few” last minute items. \240 Haha ! \240Olivia wanted to participate. \240We sure are going to miss her! \240We wish we could take her with us. \240Our friends picked her up and she had so much stuff, her favorite pillow, rug, blanket not to mention her litter box, water bowl, food bowls, toys and other stuff we thought she might need. \240Her Christmas present is under the tree at the Asp’s, we hope she likes it. \240
And we are off to the hotel for a 4:30 AM shuttle pickup.
We flew from Tucson to Fort Lauderdale on December 21, 2022 and are boarding the Viking Neptune on the 22nd. \240Fort Lauderdale was an ideal cruise port as one of our favorite restaurants, Martoranos is located there. \240 We have 7:30 reservations. \240Yummy!
When we boarded we had our traditional Bloody Mary to start our trip. \240Boarding a little after 5:00 AM is too early.
The ship is new with only one cruise from Istanbul to Fort Lauderdale prior. \240 We booked this cruise on December 10, 2020, after years of research and planning, starting in 1999. \240We decided to take this type cruise when we both retired.
A very long day, but we arrived at the Westin around 4:00 PM and have a lovely ocean front room. \240 We will see a lot of ocean over the next 5 months. \240
Viking left a gift of champagne and cheese and crackers in our room
Dinner at Martaronos was outstanding. \240 Steve was cooking and we had a wonderful meal which included lobster Diablo! \240Yum!
After booking over 2 years ago we board tomorrow. \240 I feel like a kid going to Disney for the first time \240 \240
We boarded our ship today a little later than expected due to the Coast Guard inspection of the ship. \240 Finally at 1:00 the ship was released for boarding. \240We completed the safety drill and promptly headed for the pool deck for lunch and a Bloody Mary. \240 After lunch our luggage arrived and we unpacked and attended a cruise critic welcome party in the Explorer’s Lounge. \240We met many new folks that we hope some will become friends!
The ship is beautiful and still has new car smell. \240Tomorrow is a sea day. \240So I will add some more pictures of the ship. \240
Today is a sea day, much needed after the last few days of packing and travel. \240 The weather is a little dreary and gray but much better than most of the country with the winter storms
We are in the Atlantic headed for Cozumel, arriving tomorrow- Christmas Eve. \240
Map of our ports between Fort Lauderdale and Cabo
Olivia is settling in and she and Dottie decided to stop hissing and play this morning. \240 Here’s hoping they become BFF’s!
Christmas Eve 2022, we are in Cozumel and the weather is frightful. \240It is gusting, raining and not pleasant at all. \240Our snorkeling excursion was cancelled due to the weather so we visited the cruise port briefly and then returned to the ship. \240You can see by my hair the winds are brisk.
Tonight we attended the Sissel Christmas Concert. \240 It was spectacular. \240 Then we had dinner in the Restaurant with some new friends
The ship is decorated for the holidays but, the most interesting thing are the gingerbread houses. \240 They are lovely!
Anchored next to our ship is the Virgin Scarlet Lady. \240The balconies are interesting. \240 We aren’t sure if these are hammocks or chairs. \240With this wind either might be dangerous
Christmas Day. Another rainy day as we cruise toward Cartagena. We FaceTimed with the Asp’s and said hello to Olivia as she opened her Christmas gift. \240Such fun!
Later the weather improved and we walked a little over a mile around the track. \240The winds are still gusting about 30 mph and it was a tough walking against the wind.
Later we have a massage and dinner at Manfreid’s and attended the Christmas concert on the ship. \240Overall a busy and fun day
Another sea day porting in Cartagena tomorrow morning. \240 \240We did a mile walk and enjoyed lunch. \240This afternoon we are off to the pool. \240The weather is sunny still windy and rough seas.
Olivia is getting along well with Dottie. \240They are playing with their Christmas toys and really love the tunnel gift from the Asp’s.
Tonight’s show is a performance of Broadway show tunes. \240The singers sang some of our favorites.
The food has been very good and we discovered a new liquor Nero Bottago. \240Very good after dinner.
The real trip starts tomorrow with the arrival in Cartagena and our shore excursion. \240 The weather is to be warm with no rain. \240Goodie!
We ported in Cartagena at 6:00 AM this morning. \240 This is a brief stop as we depart at 1:00 PM. \240We are taking the included driving tour of the city and landmarks. \240It is very hot and the winds have retired.
Tha port is a large commercial port and very busy.
We stopped at the old fort for pictures. \240 This is. UNESCO world heritage site and there are many individuals selling crafts and ladies in national costume that ask to have their picture taken with you for a fee. \240There was also a cute burro who wore flowers and a hat for pictures. \240 I simply snapped candies of both.
Upon return to the ship there is a nature park. \240We were able to see an Anteater with her baby on her back and of course if there are flamingos we need pictures!
We returned to our beautiful ship for lunch and our early departure.
Dinner tonight at the Restaurant. \240 Jeff enjoyed a curry dish and the high point for me was the beef carpaccio. \240 It was awesome! \240 Tomorrow Colon and Panama, we have been on board 7 days, but it feels like yesterday. \240 Let’s see how we feel in 40, 60, 90 days.
The old city walls were erected in the 1600’s and still stand today. Many places there are still cannons in the wall. \240We stopped at a local market for a brief time. The bay is beautiful featuring the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. \240The new area of Cartagena has been high rise building
Tonight’s show was Broadway after dark a series of American and British show tunes. \240 Very enjoyable. \240
We ported in Colin and decided not to take the included tour to Panama City as it entailed a 1,5 hour bus ride each way. \240On prior cruises we have done both the tour of Colon and Panama City as well as locked through the canal on a ferry which was cool.
The cruise port is rather depressing. \240They have a beautiful empty building and a duty free shop. \240The harbor is mainly commercial.
We walked through the duty free shop and also saw some dancers who greeted us. \240 That was the high point.
After we worked out in the gym \240I walked a mile on the deck and Jeff walked 4. \240Then off to the pool and lunch. \240We don’t depart until. 11 PM so we probably have another walk or so before the day is over.
We have a sea day the next two dsys and then we dock in Puttanesca on Saturday.
Dancers
I dug up some old pictures from the canal
Tonight during cocktails a couple arrived in the Explorer’s Lounge and they were getting married. \240 Below are some pictures. \240 They were adorable. \240 We also discovered a new favorite cordial!
Empty cruise port building
It still windy not as humid
Today is another sea day cruising toward Costa Rico. \240The weather is warmer and humid. \240We both walked this morning Jeff got in about 5 miles and I was able to walk 1.5 miles. \240 The conditions were more difficult today.
Jeff is working on his book and after lunch we are going to the ship gym and pool. \240We love the heated ceramic loungers in the spa,
Sunset was beautiful tonight
Tonight’s show is a ventriloquist, Don Bryan and Noteworthy, that should be fun.
The ocean is beautiful today.
We have been on the ship one week today and the time has flown by. Today we are locking through the Panama Canal. \240 Such a work of engineering marvel. \240 While we have gone through several of the locks on a ferry (pictures in prior day) we have never cruised the canal on a large ship and locked through all three of the locks.
The weather is a little cooler and not quite as humid. \240We went through the first lock , the Gutan Lock, around 8:00 AM and now we are waiting for our turn in the second lock. \240The process is fascinating with the organization of ships waiting to enter the lock and those coming through. \240It certainly is a timing orchestration.
There are many tankers and cargo ships coming through the canal. \240A little while ago we passed the first cruise ship we have spotted \240headed toward Panama, a large Princess ship.
Our second lock of the day around 1:30 PM. \240 The Gamboa Lock.
Locks closed in front and back of ship as water level is lowered
Locks open at new lower level
Mules or tow trains in Panama Canal are train locomotives that help steer large ships through the canal, preventing them from hitting and damaging the canal.
Our third and final lock arriving about 1:30 PM at the Mariflores Lock, exiting about 3:00 PM. We have passed from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.
Water has dropped and locks will open
Locks just closed
The locks are closing
Once the locks close the drops over 500 feet
As the lock opened a large gathering of Panama citizens were there shouting happy new year to us. \240
Tonight’s concert is a series of southern sounds including many country hits. \240Another full day, we had a great time! \240It is great to spend so much time together after all the yeats of school, long work hours and travel.
Today I walked 2 miles and Jeff is still out on the track probably getting 4-5 miles in. \240 It is much cooler and much less humid.
Olivia has taken up a new hobby of bird watching. It is great for her as the Asp’s have trees right outside their windows, which her forever home doesn’t offer. \240 With this additional activity and fun at her temporary residence she might not want to come home.
Today we port in Puntaarenas, Costa Rico. \240 We are doing the coach tour of the area.
This morning a large sailboat was docked next to us in port. \240 There was also a cute train to take guests down the large cruise dock. \240The ship Star Clipper was registered in 🇸🇪 Sweden and had over 100 passengers.
The harbor was lovely. \240
Coffee plant
Sample of cart used to move coffee from the field
Coffee pod
On deck dancing at midnight. \240The hair tells the story, very humid, but loads of fun!
We enjoyed the excursion today we learned a great deal about Costa Rico. \240We drove to Esparza and enjoyed some dancing and music. \240Leaving the cruise port there was a small beach. \240 Along the trip we passed a small river that the guide said would dry up before May when it rains again. \240
Our port picture
Olivia had a busy day yesterday, \240she helped Alane sweep and mop the dining and living room. \240Having experienced her help before it makes the task take much longer. \240 Alane said she was tired last night, but up early for bird watching.
We had dinner with new friends Kathleen and Bill Stafford at Manfried’s tonight. \240Dinner was great and dessert was wonderful a soufflé. \240 We enjoyed dinner then went to the pool deck to dance on deck with the band until after midnight. \240 Lots of fun!!
Sea day today and for the next few days. \240 Since we didn’t come in until nearly 1:00 AM we will sleep late and go to breakfast. \240We are cruising to Cabo San Lucas for our last stop before LA.
The ocean is fairly calm today and it’s not scalding hot and humid. \240I walked a mile and Jeff walked 3 miles this morning.
I took a photo of a model of the ship and also the aft where our cabin is located . This model also show the infinity pool on the aft
I think we will go to the outdoor pool this afternoon and rest after staying up past 1:00 last night.
Dinner was yummy wedge salad and mussels followed by port. \240 Early evening due to late night last night.
Sea day 2/4 another nice day. \240I was able to walk 2.5 miles a personal best. \240Viking has a lovely walking track, 4 laps around equals a mile. \240On that note it is necessary to mention that there are many styles of walkers and runners on the track. \240The most annoying are the hand holders who move at a snail pace blocking the width of the track and another are those that bring large purses hanging from their shoulder. \240Interesting to say the least, but they are walking.
On another note Olivia seems to be well adjusted at her vacation home. \240She and Dottie move forward in their relationship then take a few paws backwards. \240 Stay tuned to see if the become BFF’s. \240
Tonight after dinner we played Bruce’s Brain Busters. \240 We didn’t fare as well as others, but we had a great time. \24015 questions of bizarre knowledge.
Before dinner we had cocktails in the atrium. \240The violinist was superb !
After lunch on the 7th deck I went to the pool also on 7. There are 2 pools one mid deck and one an infinity pool aft. \240 Both are heated with hot tubs and very nice.
Sea day 3/4. \240The sea is calmer, \240but it is hotter with more humidity. \240We are somewhere in the pacific headed for Cabo. \240We are nearing an area where whales and sea turtles are common. \240 That would be cool. \240If I’m lucky enough to see one, pictures will be posted.
Lamp in the bar made from instruments.
Sunset tonight. \240We had cocktails on the veranda. \240It was a little windy
Early we had wine in the Artium and enjoyed the entertainment. \240We had cocktails at Torshavn, a bar on the \2402nd deck. \240Great fun with the Stafford’s. \240 After dinner the boys had cigars.
Olivia and Dottie have a new game- lying on the floor and swatting each other around the corners of the couch. \240 Cat games
I walked 1.5 miles conditions were rough today. \240 My plan after lunch to go to the pool deck to continue working on my tan. \240Jeff continues working on his book and exercising in the gym.
Sea day 4/4. We saw sightings of land today for the first time in 4 days. \240Still no marine life that we have seen. \240The ocean is \240not as calm and the wind has picked up.
Can’t get a much better view I’m in a lounge chair by the aft infinity pool, just above our cabin
Aft pool
Sunset tonight
What more do you need? \240Water, beer, sun screen and of course sun!
I walked 2 miles and Jeff walked 6 and is going to work on his book before and after lunch. \240 My plan is the same as yesterday working on my tan.
We anchored in the pacific this morning and tendered ashore. \240 We are excited as we are doing a whale watching tour.
Olivia continues to make herself at home at the Asp’s. \240 She has offered her services as computer cat to her hosts. \240 She also is helpful in TV/ electrical projects, cleaning and other household tasks. \240
No trip to Cabo is complete without a stop at Senor Frogs. \240 Of course we had to visit. \240 We had margaritas and tacos, but declined the shots from the bottle, that was for our younger days!
We had a great excursion! \240We tendered to Cabo and we were able to get great pictures of El Arco. \240 We were so excited we saw sea lions, lots of pelicans and whales. \240 There were lots of whales! \240It was so exciting and the crew on the Cabo Excursions catamaran were amazing. \240 We learned a lot about whales and had a great time
There were parasailing folks in the sky over the Sea of Cortez.
We are at the southern most point with the pacific on one side and the sea of Cortez on the other. \240There is a cool beach only accessible by ferry to the Lover’s Beach with \240calm waters and if you walk across to the other side it is the Divorce Beach as the waters are rough and dangerous.
The ocean was beautiful and we enjoyed the time on the tender, onshore and on the excursions.
Sunset tonight
Sea day 1/2 before we dock in LA on Sunday. \240 It will be a busy day as we all must get off the ship and be checked by Border Patrol and the ship cleared before we can reboard. \240 Also about half of those on the ship are disembarking as they only cruised for 18 days from Fort Lauderdale to LA. \240 The passengers embarking on the ship are going to be with us until May and our arrival in London. \240 I was also able to book the remainder of our shore excursions for our additional 16 days in the British Isles which we added to the end of the cruise.
Our granddaughter started soft ball practice yesterday and today she was featured in a \240social media post on the Arizona Red site. \240 She is doing well and we are very proud of her. \240 She celebrates her 13th birthday Tuesday.
Sunset tonight. \240
The ocean is choppy today and it is cooler outside.
Today we also received this letter from Viking regarding the dedication of the Neptune which will take place in LA. \240 This is rather exciting! \240Pictures will certainly be posted
Sea day 2 and tomorrow we port LA. \240The sea is choppy and it is much colder. During our walk this morning we saw a school of dolphins, they were hard to photograph as they move quickly. \240There were about 8 of them playing in the ocean. Today due to weather the stop in Santa Barbara was cancelled so an extra sea day, hopefully it will warm up and I can work on my tan on the way to Hawaii. \240At least if the weather is poor the pool roof is close seed and it is warm enough to swim.
Sunset as usual is beautiful
Olivia is having a great time and right at home. \240 She had her semi monthly food shipment delivery this week and is still lobbying for a larger serving. \240 The vet gave me her serving amounts and she thinks it is not sufficient. \240
The ocean is the most choppy it has been any day. \240 The winds are gusting and the Neptune is rocking and rolling. \240I walked 1.5 miles and Jeff walked 2, but it was the most challenging day on the track yet. \240Winds are gusting at over 30 miles per hour. \240The ship feels like riding a camel. \240 Viking added another sea day and we bypassed porting in Santa Barbara due to the poor weather and winds. \240Santa Barbara was another tender port and the ocean was simply too rocky.
Olivia and Dottie have a new game, interesting. Dottie looks like she might be napping and Olivia is ready to pounce. Al’s snd Steve report Olivia has settled in. \240We sure do miss her, but enjoy pictures of her antics. \240We will try to FaceTime with her this week.
This afternoon I attended an art class with a new friend. It was interesting and fun. \240Art class will be held each sea day so I signed up. \240 Our project today was to learn skills using salt, alcohol, plastic wrap, a straw and a qtip.
Tonight Jeff is going to attempt to stream the TCU vs Georgia national championship game. \240 We have Jan and Gregg coming over for wine and appetizers. \240 The streaming worked unfortunately the game was very lop sided resulting in a Georgia win.
We arrived in LA \240at 5:00 AM this morning. \240About half the passengers are getting off and the remainder of the world cruise guests boarding here will embark. \240
At sunset tonight viking conducted a naming ceremony for the Neptune. \240Viking chairman and others were on board for the dedication. \240 Sissel sang the national anthem of Norway and America.
The ocean has tamed down some this morning. \240 I was able to walk 2 miles and Jeff 3. \240It was easier then yesterday, but still very challenging.
Today is an important day our beloved granddaughter, Maribella is 13! \240 She had a dinner out and a slumber party over the weekend.
This afternoon I have another art class and I’m excited.
Sea day 3/6. \240The ocean is still pretty wild. \240Jeff is working on his book and I have art class this afternoon. \240Today we complete the project we started yesterday. \240 I hope mine improves because it needs some big help. \240My coral looks like a disjointed crab.
Here are some views from inside our suite
The view from our bedroom. \240
Alane is trying to keep my plant alive with Olivia’s help. \240 I guess it reminds her of home. \240 \240She also likes to help Steve in the office. \240 \240Sometimes help is the operative word.
My finished art. \240 It has improved and I learned a lot.
We had a nice evening. \240Drinks and dancing at the Torshaven and dinner at The Restaurant. \240Viking has something to do all day. \240Guest lectures, wine tasting, yoga, art classes, bridge lessons, and shows just to name a few. \240So much it is hard to decide what to do.
View from inside the shower. \240Very hard to beat.
Sea day 4 of 6 and the sea is still rough. \240 I walked a mile but is was so humid and hot that I needed to come in. \240 Jeff walked 2 miles.
At lunch today I had fettuccine Alfredo with truffles, but the restaurant had hollowed out a massive Parmesan cheese and displayed it.
This afternoon I have art class and Jeff will write. \240Here is my bookmark which we made today. Mine has my favorite bird and I made it for my favorite granddaughter!
Before dinner we had cocktails at Torshaven and enjoyed the Viking Band. \240 Then we took part in a vodka tasting with French, Russian, and Polish vodkas. \240 It was fun. \240
Sea day 5/6 and the ocean is fierce. We port In Honolulu on Sunday and we arranged a private tour of Pearl Harbor. \240My dad was in WWII and served in the Navy in the pacific theater, so this is very interesting to me, Out tour includes a submarine visit.
The ship is rolling and sometimes it is challenging to walk around. \240We have a busy day with our walking, a sparkling wine tasting, my art class and Jeff will continue working on his book.
Olivia was selected as Critter of the Month by our HOA. Here is her submitted picture taken by our granddaughter, Maribella.
My art class project for the day, not done yet.
Toninght for dinner I enjoyed beef carpaccio with olive oil and watercress. \240 As a main I had smoked ravioli with tomato pesto sause. \240 It was delightful
Sparkling Wine tasting \240 \240Great fun! We tasted 4 sparkling wines, one from Germany, Italy, Spain and France.
Our last sea day before two days In Honolulu. \240 We are glad to get off the ship, although we have enjoyed the sea days and have been very busy. \240 \240I walked 2 miles and Jeff walked 4 today. I have art class this afternoon. And Jeff is working on his book. \240Tonight we have dinner reservations at Manfredi’s and we are going to try and FaceTime with the kids. \240 We will see how the cell and internet connections are.
The ocean is much calmer and while it is warmer the humidity is less. \240This afternoon we will have scenic views of Kilauea Volcano as we sail toward Honolulu. \240 I hope we get some great pictures.
Cocktails on our balcony watching the coast.
Jeff got some great pictures of the volcanic coast of Hilo.
My finished art project from yesterday and the one today. \240My toucan has a rather strange beak. \240I’ll work on that tomorrow. \240
To ignite after a great dinner the Viking Band was playing on the pool deck from 9-11, so we went up and danced. \240 Cocktails were flowing and the music was great! \240 We had a wonderful time.
We are still ported in Honolulu, this afternoon we are taking a driving tour of Oahu. \240The weather is great in the low 80’s and not terribly high humidity. \240 I walked 2.5 miles and Jeff logged 4.
The harbor is right downtown and easy walking, both industrial and commercial.
Sail out this evening about 5:30. \240We won’t return to american soil until late May, we are ready to see the world!
We ported in Honolulu and we’re picked up at the cruise port by the excursion operator. \240We had a wonderful day. \240 We visited the Missouri battle ship, the Arizona memorial including a movie on the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and last we took a tour through the Bowfin submarine.
The boat ride over to the Arizona memorial was short and gave us time to reflect on the purpose of the monument and the sailors buried in the ship hull for 80 years.
Mica , Bill and Kathleen- we met on the first leg of the cruise. \240They disembarked in LA and flew to Hilo then Honolulu extending their vacation. \240We were able to meet up and do the Pearl Harbor tour and dinner before they flew back to Kansas.
Model of the Bowfin submarine. \240
Olivia had a great day watching a bird dvd, napping and generally looking cute
The Bowfin Submarine was astonishing. \240 We were able to tour the deck and below on an actual wartime submarine.
Today is another sea day the first of 5. The ocean is rocky and I only got a mile in as it is very humid. \240This afternoon I have art class and Jeff will work on his book.
Olivia continues to enjoy her home away from home. \240 She is watching TV one of her favorite things. \240 She loves Paw Patrol.
My toucan is complete. \240I worked on his beak.
Sea day today, it is rather choppy. \240We are about 1500 miles from Bora Bora. \240The Ship has a new Executive Chef, Willy Moors who boarded in Honolulu. \240Food has been kicked up a notch. \240 Today at lunch we had mussels and clams fresh from the Honolulu market. \240 Wonderful
This is a busy day, we attended a Rose wine tasting class, I went to art class and Jeff worked on his book. \240 Tonight we are having dinner with another couple from Tucson.
Art class today we continued working on our card. \240 Mine is coming along this has been a 3 part lesson and we will finish the project tomorrow. \240 Also tomorrow we cross the Equator, apparently there will be a ceremony on the pool deck.
Olivia is doing well. She and Dottie still have a love hate relationship but it is getting better. Olivia still loves her favorite spinnng ball toy. \240 Sitting on it is her preferred spot.
Cocktail hour and the ocean is really rough. \240 It’s raining and windy
Sea day 3/5. \240 The storm has passed but the ocean is still rough. \240 We are crossing the equator at about 11:00 PM tonight. \240There is a celebration on the pool deck, this afternoon at 2:00. \240I also have art class afterward. \240 Tonight we are having dinner with my art instructor Deb and her husband Jim.
The Equator crossing ceremony was fun, and many officers, \240staff, and guests jumped into the pool after kissing the masked fish and a shot of Aquavit. \240
We received certificates for crossing the equator this evening.
I completed my art project a card for crossing the equator in art class today. \240
Sea day 4/5, then we port in Bora Bora, Papeete, and Moorea. \240The ocean is still rocky and our anchor Sunday is a tender port.
Olivia continues to do well and is at home at the Asp’s. \240 We miss her, but are happy she is having a good time.
In art class we learned how to do dot art. It was really fun. \240I made a box and painted the lid as well as a cardboard square which I will attach to a card. Today I will add some additional top dots to complete my art. \240More pictures to follow tomorrow.
Box lid
Dinner last night with my art instructor Deb and her mate Jim. \240 Great evening, she has a very interesting background. We walked today and Jeff is writing while I’m in art class.
Today at lunch our new chef made a giant cherry pie! \240
Card
Last night we had cocktails in the living room and met some new folks. \240Dinner in The Restaurant, a great meal lobster thermidor and grand manier soufflé! \240 Wonderful dinner. Afterward we went to Torshaven and danced with friends, Rick, Mary,Gary, and Marina.
Last sea day, but a busy one we are going to walk, then watch some playoff games, art class and later friends are dropping by for cocktails and appetizers, before we go to dinner at Manfredi’s.
Olivia got into some trouble she tried to open the treat jar and pushed it off the counter to its demise. \240 She was really sorry. \240I sent Dottie a new treat jar. \240If Olivia keeps breaking things this will an expensive cruise. \240
I completed my art today, but decided to skip class and watch football. \240Unfortunately the jaguars lost.
We held hands as there was no room on the dance floor with all the couples dancing 50’s style. I still love to hold Jeff’s hand.
Still a great evening. \240Tomorrow Bora Bora.
Bells had her first 3 games of tournament play, she has a triple at bat in the first inning, with 2 runs batted in and she played well. \240The team lost 2 games and tied the 3rd, but she played well and had a great time. \240 More games tomorrow.
Great dinner and wine at Manfredi’s, the dancing at Torshaven. \240Every cruise ship has the couple taking dance classes, here they are, they do one dance, the same dance whether fast or slow. \240 They are dancing to a country song, Feels Like A Woman.
We are anchored in the harbor off Bora Bora, it is beautiful ! We are taking a glass bottom boat tour in the afternoon and are invited to a birthday party for some friends we met onboard this evening.
Olivia has become a beggar, but at least she is liking Steve a little more
The party was fun, celebrating in the private dining room at Manfredi’s. \240 We had dinner and played two rounds of left, center, right and Jeff won the second round, \240 A fun evening and we made new friends!
The glass bottom boat excursion was fun. \240Captain Dan and Glenn were our guides and they did a great job! \240We saw lots of brain coral, many kinds of fish and sea cucumbers. \240
Bells has more games today she played well, but they lost the first game in overtime so homeward bound they are. \240Bells played well again today, and as always we are proud.
We tendered near the dock at Moorea this morning. \240We have two excursions, first snorkeling and second a lagoon tour of the island. \240We plan to go to the dock at 9 and stay until after our second excursion.
Update our morning excursion was cancelled as the weather made snorkeling hazardous. \240 We did tender over to the dock and it was such a beautiful island with white beaches and lush greenery. \240If it keeps raining our afternoon excursion will also be cancelled. \240 Bummer
Second time is a charm, we went back to the tender port a second time and were able to do the boat excursion around the island. \240 It was beautiful and the water was so blue green it was almost emerald and so very clear. \240We could see coral and the beautiful white sandy bottom. \240We saw green sea turtles, but I wasn’t able to get a picture.
Tonight at 10:00 we docked in Papeete, alongside these two beauties.
We have a walking tour planned for this afternoon, but we are going to get off the boat and walk through the city, maybe find a beach and have lunch off the ship. We walked through downtown and saw many of the sites, so we tanked the afternoon walking tour. \240We visited the open market and also the nearby park and beach. \240 While we were having beer the ferries arrived from Moorea. \240 After nearly $50.00 of beers ( this was 2 each) we returned to the ship for lunch and included draft beer. \240 We did enjoy the tempura shrimp for lunch they were delicious! \240Tonight we have a new friend we met on the ship coming for cocktails and then off to dinner. \240
Sunset from our balcony.
We have 5 sea days and we cross the International date line late in the week. \240Today, I have art class and we have dinner with Deb and Jim again, my art teacher. \240 She is leaving the ship in New Zealand and we will miss her. We will walk and Jeff will work on his book.
I did not walk today, but decided to lounge on a chaise on the deck. \240The view doesn’t get much better
My nearly completed art project for the day
Olivia is quite at home with the Asp’s
We love our girl♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Another sea day. \240We also moved the clock back an hour last night so we are now 4 hours behind the time at home in Arizona. \240 Jeff is walking and working on his book, I have art class and I think I will go to the pool for awhile today.
While at the pool I discovered water aerobics every other day at 9 AM. \240That would be great for me and fun. \240I’m going to plan to participate on Saturday. \240This will help to work off the margaritas etc.
The ocean is rocking this afternoon. The waves are 13 feet from the port side.
My last art project which I will complete tomorrow
Last night we had dinner with Deb and Jim, my art instructor it was a fun evening and it will be sad when they depart the ship on February 2. \240 Tonight we have plans to have dinner with Rick and Mary from Tucson, another fun evening. \240These are the easiest dinners with friends, no shopping, chopping, cooking or cleanup!
.
Olivia likes to interrupt her nap to look over the wall and see who is in the living room. \240She is very nosy.
My completed art project
Sea day today and I have \240my last art class. \240There will be an exhibition of all our art on our last sea day. \240Some of the students are very talented, but I have simply enjoyed the time and meeting new ladies.
My last art project \240 A shadow box
Great fun on the pool deck with the viking band. \240We had dinner with Kay and Ross Sutherland and had a great time, then off to Torshaven for dancing. \240We are setting out clocks ahead at 2:00 AM, so we have no Saturday this week. \240
The ocean is quite rocky and has been since late afternoon yesterday, much too rocky to walk
Today at 5:30 there is a celebration on the pool deck to commensurate crossing the international date line. \240We aren’t certain yet exactly what time we will cross and lose a day. \240 This is a new experience for both of us.
So we skipped over the equator and the ocean is much smoother, but we lost a our Saturday. \240 Today, is the catch-up day for art before the exhibition tomorrow. \240We are planning to walk as the deck is much calmer and the temperature is in in the low 70’s, then have a quiet day. I managed to walk 1.5 miles and Jeff 3. \240It was more humid than I thought is was going to be. This afternoon I’m going to the pool while Jeff works on his book. We don’t anchor until the 31st at the Bay of Islands which is another tender port.
Olivia sent an email today that she missed us. \240 We miss her so much. How can you not miss that cute little face?
We are having dinner with new friends tonight and I followed up with Casper the restaurant manager regarding the party for Jeff’s birthday next Saturday. \240We have 12 guests and will be gathering in the private room at Manfredi’s.
Our granddaughter has another softball tournament today and tomorrow, we are waiting for the outcome and highlights.
Olivia and her two favorite toys
Viking now has a display of traditional Olso Norway regional clothing. \240These items are beautiful.
Big day, our last sea day and in the future we don’t have any large number of sea days together for a number of weeks. \240 We have the football playoff games and the art exhibit today.
The art exhibit had over 650 entries. \240There was some very talented work on display.
At noon the caption announced that we would not be tendering at the Bay of Islands tomorrow due to the ocean swell and the dangerous conditions, instead we are headed toward Auckland. \240We should arrive around 5 pm tomorrow, we will see if the weather and ocean cooperates.
We ported today in Auckland and if we like can disembark sometime after 6 PM. \240Jeff and I have dinner with the General Manager so I doubt we are getting off tonight. \240 We are in Auckland for 3 days and have several interesting excursions planned, plus we will spend some time just exploring the city.
The ocean is calmer but it is much colder, very windy \240and very foggy. \240 We can see some islands as we are sailing.
At lunch today viking had a lovely presentation of crostini. \240They were yummy shrimp, capers, tomatoes and olive oil and many others.
We are moving toward the Queens Wharf and can see Auckland. More pictures once we dock.
After dinner we went to Torshaven and had a cocktail and danced, \240 Diner was good we can’t say the same for the other couples included. \240There was a lot of pretentious uncouthness, dumbness why do we need to spend time with these people? \240It was not a good use of our time. \240One couple did not attend they might have been the brightest of the lot. \240 \240Not one of our best evenings on the ship.
Auckland skyline
Passenger ferry to Devenport. \240
We arrived in the star theater to discover that the aquarium was closed for the next few days due to flooding. The alternate tour was to go to the top of the sky tower then preview the WEGA theater experience.
We arrived at the Sky tower and were greeted by lanterns and their new year display.
We had a beer at the Sky Casino and Jeff posed in the Blacks cutout.
I enjoyed fish and chips, the Cole slaw was wonderful as was the fish. \240
Olivia had a big day, Alane and Steve entertained and Olivia helped tidy the house for the company. \240She found a rug tunnel to play in and discovered the romba automatic vacuum. \240 Interesting when the company arrived she went off and took a nap.
The sky tower provided great views of Auckland and since it was raining no one attempted the bungee jump from the top, but several folks did the virtual sky slide.
Tonight we had a casual dinner and then went to Torshaven for after dinner drinks and dancing.
The newest VANS
More beer
After the tour we walked through Auckland to an art store so I could get some water colors to continue my art since Deb departed the ship today. \240Then we walked down Queen Street and found all the high end stores, lunch at a great pub and returned to the ship.
Then we arrived at WETA it was so fun and interesting. \240This company does the graphics, background, \240costumes and animation for movies. \240 It was so interesting to see how they build creatures, masks, makeup and background scenes. \240 There were a number of interactive activities.
Jeff had a BBLT bagel, he said it was delicious bacon, Brie, lettuce and tomato.
Today, February 2nd would have been my mother’s 97th birthday. \240She passed 13 years ago, but I still miss her and think of her everyday.
We are doing a 2 hour driving \240tour of Auckland this morning. \240The weather is calling for rain and the temperature is in the mid 70’s. \240
Auckland is so very green, a lot of parks, beautifully landscaped homes and gardens and of course many many sail boats and boat docks. Since it is volcanic land it is very hilly and the terrain very rugged.
We all should play here!
After the tour we had lunch on the pier at Shucker & Brothers. \240Oysters and fish and chips. \240Dinner tonight with Marina and Gary from Australia. \240 Such fun!
We also found out today Deb our art instructor and her husband Jim are on until Sydney. \240 Yea!!!!
America’s cup ship building facility. The next race is in Barcelona in 2024.
Today we are doing a 3 hour walking food tour of Auckland and our plan was to take the ferry to Devonport, however it was quite rainy after the tour so we made our way back to the ship. \240 We did stop at a gift store and picked up some New Zealand honey. We are having dinner with Ray and Mara tonight, they are also from Arizona, living in Marana.
Along our walk we passed the famous Cornerbar, it is an Auckland icon.
We did pass this shop which I thought was a bar but upon closer inspection it was a clothing store. \240Who would have guessed from the name?
To gain access to our next stop on the North Shore we had to walk across a draw bridge and just as we arrived it raised to allow one of the America’s cup tourist sailboats to cruise through. \240 This boat was used in a prior Americans cup race and is now used to take tourists out to enjoy the experience of sailing on an American’s cup boat. \240Yesterday we learned that for every race they develop new boats using new technology in order to produce the fastest vessel possible. \240 \240Currently they are building the sailboats for the 2024 race in Barcelona. \240We also saw a sample of an older sailboat not in use any longer.
We are a little wind blown and wet as it is raining pretty hard now, but it didn’t dampen our spirits. \240 Great fun!
My big purchases for the day chocolates and local honey!
Olivia has discovered the hummingbird feeder outside the window at Asp’s, I’m sure they are driving here wild. \240 She also has taken to lying on the sofa during TV time. \240 She is right at home. \240We know she is well taken care of, but we miss her so much.
When we left the cruise port for the tour it was sprinkling, and we walked through a great deal of downtown, stopping at 3 places for food and several more for viewing of sites. \240It was a remarkable tour and even with the sprinkles that by the end of the tour became full scale rain, we had a delightful time and experienced some great food. \240 Also we met another couple from the Seattle area, Deb and Jim who are staying on the ship until Bergen. \240 It will be fun! \240 We have met so many really nice people.
All decked out for the rain
As we were leaving the cruise port we were able to see both new and old architecture in the buildings as we walked. \240New high rise apartment buildings as well as restored old buildings from the 1800’s.
Throughout the city local New Zealand artists have painted hearts on buildings as part of a beautification process. \240 Here are two examples
Our next stop was at Sanford and Son’s fish market. \240This is one of the oldest seafood markets right on the pier and is a market and restaurant featuring a lot of seafood, but also pizza, Asian cuisine, a bakery and many other foods.
Our final stop was for lunch at Wynyard pavilion featuring seafood including mussels, oysters, shrimp, calamari, and a fish slider. \240 So much food and very tasty.
Our first stop was the Debretts hotel and kitchen where we enjoyed local New Zealand cheese, honey, fruits, and a chocolate fruit tart, along with coffee, tea or hot chocolate. \240 The blue cheese was especially tasty. \240The hotel is very old and at one point was used as a hostel then abandoned for many years before being remodeled and refurbished. It was a grand mix of new and old and beautifully completed.
Our second stop was a chocolatier, Honest Chocolates. \240We tasted 3 different chocolates, all were very good. We have friends celebrating an anniversary onboard soon and we purchased chocolates for them as a gift.
From here we walked to the reclaimed wharf and the ferry station. \240Ferrys depart on a schedule to Devenport, Waiheke, and many other islands. \240 This area was once Harbour, but has been reclaimed and filled and the waterfront area is lovely with shops, bars, restaurants and also includes walking and bike paths as well as lots of benches and park like areas. \240There were many native trees and this is also where a WWII memorial is located. \240Many kiwi use Lime scooters to traverse the city.
Today is Jeff’s 65th birthday. \240We have a excursion planned that will last until 12:00 and then we are going to walk through the port town and possibly have lunch if we find something interesting.
On the way back to the ship we passed several beaches, some with large waves and a number of surfers as well as much calmer beaches both were only about a 10 minute walk from the ship.
Jan and Pam
Jan and Gregg
Acting our age and having a great time
Russ and Jan
Rick and Mary
Mary and Stephen
We left the harbor and traveled about and hour through the New Zealand countryside. \240The main exports are fertilizer, lumber, dairy, and kiwi. \240The area around the cruise port to the right was very commercial with container cargo ports, fertilizer production plants and sawmills.
We stopped at a community center and met a kiwi grower and enjoyed slices of kiwi as well as kiwi juice, liquor, and jelly from both the green and gold varieties. \240Currently the grower is developing a red kiwi fruit.
This afternoon we talked to the Asp’s and \240caught up. \240The cellular connection was good and we were also able to talk to Olivia. She hears our voices and looks around like where can mom and dad be? Last night we caught up with our granddaughter and our kids.
We sailed out tonight at 5 PM heading for Napier where we dock tomorrow morning. \240
Tonight, I have reserved the private dining room at Manfredi’s and invited 5 couples to share dinner and cake with us. \240 The sommelier, Jorge has selected some special wines and the chef is making carrot cake which is one of Jeff’s favorites.
This morning Caroline and Slam our cabin stewards sang happy birthday to Jeff. \240 Viking sent champagne and cake for him.
The party invites !
The food and wine was great, \240Jorge served champagne, our favorite French Boudreaux and a great red wine,
After the tour we walked to the downtown area for lunch. \240We have had a lot of fish so we opted for Burger King, our first Whopper in over 50 days. \240On the walk we did see this 5 person motorcycle which takes tourists on rides around the area.
Green and gold kiwi
The birthday boy and his bride
We drove through significant farm lands and viewed the kiwi groves as well as farm land with cattle and sheep. \240Kiwi orchards resemble grape vines in the field and are harvested in late April or May each year. \240We learned New Zealand had 50M people and 100M sheep. \240We passed a few lovely country churches also.
After dinner Mary and Stephen, Jan and Pat and Jeff and I went to Torshaven for drinks and dancing. \240 We had a great time
After dinner we tried to play the dollar game and then we had carrot cake. \240Chef came out to thank us and wish Jeff happy birthday. \240The cake was yummy!
Today we don’t port in Napier until noon. \240We have a wine and cellar tour before we leave to sail to Wellington tonight. The ocean is beautiful and the weather is wonderful. \240We are looking forward to the day!
As we disembark the ship several classic car owners were taking passengers on a personal driving tour of Napier. \240The port has a wealth of cargo containers as well as lumber for export.
The countryside is green, filled with foliage, sheep and cattle as well as apple orchards.
When we returned to the ship a small combo was playing portside to welcome us back
Tonight on our way to dinner there was a large pod of dolphins outside the window playing and having a wonderful time. \240We had never seen that many together. \240 Unfortunately we were not able to get pictures. \240 They move really fast. \240It was still thrilling to see them!
Our first stop was at Abbey Cellars, we tasted 6 wines and enjoyed some light snacks and cheese. The winery has a large outdoor pavilion and on weekends there is entertainment. \240We also met Ash the winery dog.
Our second stop was at Brookfield estate winery and we tasted 4 wines. \240Our host, John was very entertaining and he selected me as a volunteer to help him check a wine to determine if it was corked. \240We enjoyed the experience and met the owner/winemaker Peter Robertson. \240We purchases four wines and had a great time. \240 Once again the winery had an outdoor pavilion and weekend entertainment.
Peter Robertson
Driving out of Napier we were able to see some of the Art Deco buildings which are prevalent in downtown. \240There were also many beachside parks and a WWII memorial
Today we are porting in Wellington, our last stop in New Zealand. \240 We are taking a full day excursion to the Wairarapa region. \240The day will include visiting with seals and enjoying New Zealand wines in a tasting during lunch.
Olivia is doing well and she is really trying to be a good girl. \240 We FaceTimed with her but mostly she just looked around like I know those voices, but why are mom and dad in that box. \240 Her favorite toy is the Christmas tunnel and Alane says Olivia will still fit through the tunnel when we get home, unlike Dottie.
We stopped for a potty break, tea and treats at the Royal Hotel, they had a great bar!
The sunset tonight was lovely, we had lobster and filet for dinner then went to the pool deck to dance for a couple hours.
Interesting there were all these boats along the shore with rusty old tractors. \240The tractors are used to push and pull the boats into and out of the sea. \240The other fact we learned was about bach’s. \240These are summer homes by the sea \240 Here are several pictures of some in the area.
Continuing on toward the sea the views were astonishing and the hundreds of seals delightful. \240There was a lot of farm land, sheep and cattle, There is also a lighthouse on the point with exterior Stairs. \240 The winds were gusting 40 mph so few people elected to climb them.
See if you can find the seal
We docked a little late due to high winds and left the port about 1/2 hour late. \240We headed toward the Hutt Valley and over the Remutaka mountain range to follow the ocean coastline and see the seals. The drive is about 2.5 hours over to the seal viewing. \240Our driver was a bit over sharing telling us she was a naturalist (nudist) and pointing out her camp as we passed it going and coming. \240She also liked to talk with her hands and taking them off the wheel. \240That is scary when traversing all the curves going over the mountain. \240The drive reminded me of the road going up to Gates Pass in Tuscon.
When we arrived at the bay sometimes it was hard to see the seals, as they blend into the rocks especially if they are wet. \240It is breeding season and there were hundreds of baby seals. \240 This was a wonderful experience.
Out final stop was in Martinborough at a local winery Luna for some wine and lunch. \240 During the drive over the scenery changed again from this morning with more wooded hills and certainly less step from going over the mountain. Everything was tasty and the wine pretty good as well.
Micah, our guest relations manager. \240 He is a great guy and a lot of fun!
While we aren’t able to attend today was the annual Friendz celebration at Reid Park Zoo. This reception is held each year to honor donors to the zoo of $500.00 or more. \240 Many of our docents, board members and donors attended to learn of the progress we have made on the World Of Play, the Asia Expansion and the new parking lot. \240 They were also treated to a preview look at the new giant bugs display opening soon. \240 My friend and fellow board member Steve Larson also sent me a picture of my favorite bird.
OUR FAVORITE THING TODAY : \240 The seals bypassed everything else today it was memorable.
Sea day today as we head for Hobart Australia. \240We have a 1:00 PM meet and \240greet with our private tour group going to the blue mountains in Sydney. \240Then in the afternoon I have art class. \240 Jeff is going to work on his book.
Olivia and Dottie still have there on again then off moments like these, but for the most part they are getting along most of the time. After a busy day she is sacked out.
Art class was fun. \240I created two stenciled projects
This afternoon we had a meet and greet with the group going on the Blue Mountains additional tour on our first day in Sydney. \240It is great group of 37 people, 20 per bus with a personal guide. \240It will be a fun day. \240 This evening we are having dinner wih Story’s and Buddras.
Today I sent my tennis shoes to the laundry and tonight they came back not washed. \240 Apparently the laundry does not wash tennis shoes. \240Sooooo I took them to the laundry room and washed them with a towel and 26 minutes later they were clean. \240Duh!!
Another busy sea day. \240We are cruising the Milford sound from 7-11 and the Doubtful Sound from 4-7 PM. We have a behind the scenes ship tour at 11:30 then a Sauvignon Blanc tasting at 1:00. \240I have art class at 2:00. \240Very busy!
The Behind the Scenes tour was cool! We visited the kitchen, composting area, laundry, walked I-95 ( the center hallway that goes from one end of the ship to other) and visited the offices. \240Unfortunately we were not able to visit the engineers office as they were navigating the sound.
The wine tasting was one French, one south African, one Australian and one New Zealand wine,
Our route today, first the DoubtFul Sound the the Milford Sound
So the ocean was so turbulent that we had to skip the Milford Sound and cruise around to the south end and enter the Doubtful Sound.
Art class was new we worked on Valentines Day cards, which is a two day project. \240 Here is a picture of my first days work. Does anyone recognize this cat? \240Also here is a picture of my art class table, Jan, Karen, Michelle, Mary, Deb, our instructor and me.
Activities for the cruise. \240They do lots of fun things
Olivia and Dottie are playing and she still loves the hummingbird feeder. \240 Jeff is going to move our feeder near the bathroom window for her when we get home
At 4:00 PM the captain announced we were entering the Milford Sound. \240 It was breathtaking. \240We cruised into the sound and turned around to exit into the Tasman Sea. As we entered the sound it was sunny, however shortly it began to rain really hard, then suddenly stopped. \240The pictures reflect the foliage differences with the rain and without sun.
After dinner we played trivia in the Explorer’s Lounge. \240We faired ok, but did not win.
Ship Manager , Ron
This machine is cool, table cloth goes in wet and comes out on the other side dry, pressed and folded.
We are cruising the Tasman Sea. \240It is very choppy with large swells. \240It is far to choppy to walk. Today, Jeff is working on his book and I have art class to complete my Valentines Day card. \240This evening our friends, Jan and Russ Story celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary with a special dinner.
As we cruise toward Hobart,Tasmania the waves are ranging from 12-15 feet. \240We are 757 miles from our next port.
I completed two Valentines Day cards today. \240It was fun. \240Tomorrow we are doing dot paint in art class.
We had dinner with 6 couples and celebrated Jan and Russ’s anniversary. \240The evening was lovely.
Olivia and Dottie relaxing. \240 This is about as close as they get unless they are sparring. \240I think Olivia is plotting an attack on a sleeping and unsuspecting Dottie.
A busy sea day today, the sea is a lot calmer and we are going to walk this morning. \240 This afternoon we have a Shiraz tasting and I have art class. \240Tonight we are having dinner with my art instructor Deb and her partner Jim. \240
Olivia and Dottie are busy some play some sparring. \240
Art class project not quite done, I need to do some work on his toes.
At noon we are about 300 miles from our port tomorrow in Hobart and have traveled over 1500 miles since we left Wellington, New Zealand. Lunch today had a coconut water drink in the coconut. \240Interesting. \240I think some vodka would improve this drink a lot.
P
The wine tasting was good, we tasted 2 French, one New Zealand and one Australian wine. \240Sad news Dorge is leaving us tomorrow and is headed to the Viking Star as Food and Beverage Manager. \240 This is a great promotion, but we are sad to see him leave.
Today we port in Hobart, and Jeff and I are doing a tour of an oyster farm to learn how they are raised, farmed and also enjoy some samples. \240 From there we go to a winery for some Tasmanian wines.
We visited the oldest brewery in Australia, Cascade brewery.
After lunch we walked back to the ship and were able to see many of the tall ships in the Harbour.
Tonight I met another passenger who had gone to the animal sanctuary and she had pictures of the Tasmanian devil which she shared with us.
We are visiting Hobart during a holiday weekend and downtown is very busy with the Saturday market along with an exhibit of Tall Ships and other festivities.
As we leave the cruise port and drive toward the oyster farm there are many old homes built in the 1800’s. \240The landscape is green with foliage and flowers. \240There were also many old churches.
Tonight we are having dinner with Ray and \240Mara Rigel also from Tucson. \240 They are coming to our cabin for cocktails prior to dinner. Sunset tonight was beautiful
From the brewery we journeyed to the Barilla Bay Oyster Farm. \240 We were able to see how oysters are raised and farmed. \240They also demonstrated the various sizes of oysters from 3 months to 10 years. \240 There was also an oyster shucking demonstration.
We completed our trip to the oyster farm by sampling a plate of oysters. \240 The oysters were so fresh and cold, very tasty.
Also we visited Gillespie’s ginger beer production plant. \240This is a small family operation. \240 We tasted 3 kinds of ginger beer.
At this location the next to last stop was at the Candied Abolone drying venue. \240 Abolone is not farmed it is secured wild by diving. \240 The process was interesting and Tasmania exports 15% of all Abolone world wide.
There are no Olivia pictures today, but there is a picture of Dottie. \240 Note how angelic she looks.
After leaving the oyster farm we visited Cold Valley Winery. \240The property was beautiful, the wines fair, \240but the cheeses served with the wines were exceptional.
On the way back to the ship the driver offered to drop us at the market, so many folks got off the bus and ventured out into the market and the Harbour. \240 Jeff and I walked around for awhile then we went to a restaurant where we had a beer and a lobster roll. \240 It was wonderful! \240After we visited a local grocery store and purchased some cheese.
We are porting in Geeling, Australia and our excursion is taking us to the Ballarat Wildlife Park. \240After we tender ashore we will have approximately a one hour drive to the park. \240 We are excited as this park has free roaming kangaroos, kolas and other critters.
The Super Bowl is on here at 10:30 this morning and we will miss it. \240The ship is replaying the game this evening at 7:30, but by then it will all be over. \240 We will see.
Wow what a great experience at the animal park. \240The drive over was about an hour and one half. \240Leaving the port and Geelong there are very old traditional houses, but quickly we were driving through farmland on our way to the animal park. \240We passed many small towns and golf courses on the journey. \240One town was named Meredith, after our daughter I’m sure.
The park also had a wonderful meerkat exhibit, very similar to the one at Reid Park Zoo in Tucson.
As we are leaving th park Jan and I had to have some fun with pictures of us in the kangaroo \240cut outs
Fencing consisted of a rock wall with posts and 3 strands of barbed wire
While we didn’t get to go to Melbourne, as we chose kangaroos and koalas here are some great pictures shared by a fellow passenger who did get to make the trip. \240 Next time!
Returning to the harbor Jeff poses with the carved wooden man greeting guests.
Interesting the park had a wonderful reptile house and they had many snakes , but they had alligators and crocodiles. \240 We got to see their male gator, Crunch and his female mate Bella. \240Bella and Crunch are the parents of an alligator born at the park.
The offspring
We saw dingos, tiny penguins, emu, giant tortoises, llama, lots of snakes, birds including an eagle, Tasmanian devil \240and a Komodo dragon. \240The park was very modern and the exhibits were very well maintained.
We arrived at the Animal park and wow! \240The kangaroos are roaming loose in the park. \240 We were given a bucket of feed and you are able to walk right up to them and they eat out of your hand. It’s fun to watch them hopping toward you. \240 One kangaroo put his paw on my hand while he ate.
The high point of the afternoon was the koala cuddle. \240 We saw many koala, but we were able to pet and feed a family of 3. \240 There was the male Bentley, very handsome, female Yoda, and her son, OB2. \240All the koala were so cute
The full family
There were many other animals at the park. \240 They had a very large male tiger, 6 years of age and the keeper demonstrated feeding him some raw meet as well as letting him search for food hidden in the exhibit. \240 This was the largest tiger I have ever seen.
What a great day, we returned to the ship via tender and had dinner with Jan and Gregg. \240 We also spent some time with Milos the new SOM.
We are sailing to Phillips Island and tendering late this afternoon for our excursion-the penguin parade. \240 We left Hobart at 5 PM yesterday and anchor at 5 PM today for the excursion.
The sea is very rough today, very gray, cloudy and on and off rain. \240 I’m not saying it’s rocky, but we have white caps in the toilet water. \240 LOL!
Another busy day with trivia at noon, art class and then the excursion. \240Apparently the penguins return to their nests at sunset after a day of hunting in the sea. \240This is the largest colony of small penguins in the world. \240We are pretty excited.
My final art class project is complete. \240This has been fun and when I get home I think I will continue to paint. \240
Penguin update what an experience! We tendered over to the island from the ship and ported on Phillip Island. \240The tender ride was smooth and when we landed there was a remarkable carved wooden statue at the port.
It is 4:16 and we can see land, it is very windy and cool. \240We haven’t anchored yet. \240After we anchor we are taking a 30 minute tender ride then a 30 minute bus ride to the beach where the penguins come ashore. \240It will be a long evening. \240Our tickets are for 6 and we should arrive at 7, this is about 2 hours before the penguins arrive. \240 Our plan is to put down our stuff and then find something to eat and drink. \240
Pictures of the penguins, unfortunately no photographs are permitted at the site so these photos are from the gallery of the Penguin Parade.
Our guide
The stands
We headed over to the Penguin Parade. \240We arrived a few hours before they parade, but Jeff got us great seats. \240The vistors center had some great displays of penguin information.
The park is wonderful, there are wallaby’s, geese, and several birds I couldn’t identify. \240I was also able to get some pictures of the penguin hutches and the landscape they make home.
The area for viewing the penguins is superb. \240There are sets of concrete bleachers build around the area where the penguins cross the dune after leaving the water. \240 We learned so much, these are the smallest penguins in the world, about 13 inches tall and 2.2 pounds. \240 They go out to sea then return to their hutches. \240 These penguins only leave the water at sunset in groups. \240 They are afraid of birds such as the owl, hawk and other large birds who are predators of the penguin. \240 When they leave the sea they cluster together in groups and once they gain courage they make their way up the sand over the dune and to their hutch, \240we learned these penguins are friendly with each other and very social. \240We arrived during molting season. \240 Penguins molt each February and prior to molting they feed very heavy, doubling their weight and then they stay on land for 17 days and lose all their feathers and grow new ones. \240 During this time they will return to their normal weight of 2 pounds.
The park has built an extensive boardwalk over the dunes and down to the beach. \240 This allows guests to see the penguins leave the ocean and then follow along on the boardwalk as they make their way home. \240 Many of the penguins, once up from the ocean and under the boardwalk rest right beside the boardwalk. \240 I took a couple illegal no flash pictures.
Jeff held down our seats and I walked along the boardwalk to photograph the hutches and some of the wildlife. \240 I lucked out! \240I found a penguin sticking his head out of his hutch.
After the viewing we walked back to the visitor center and caught an awaiting bus to return to the harbor. \240 What a surprise when we got off the bus viking staff greeted us with mulled wine and donuts!! What a treat. \240 We were fortunate there was a tender loading as we made our way down the dock and we were on our way and back to the ship by 10:30. \240When we docked another Viking surprise awaited us, soup and sandwiches in the library and the explorer lounge. \240Yummy!! What a wonderful experience.
Today is Valentines Day and we are at sea, heading toward Eden. \240We had breakfast, I finished my last art project and we are playing trivia at noon.
We exchanged Valentines Day cards. \240I was so proud that I brought a card from home only on closer inspection today,it was a Christmas card so I marked that out and wrote Happy Valentines Day on it. \240 Jeff didn’t have a card so I made a card for him to give me in art class. \240Interesting.
Silly cat
Valentine’s Day dinner tonight at Manfredis with Stephen and Mary, that will be fun. We started dinner with Cava and enjoyed our entrees. \240 After Jeff and I went to Torshaven to have another drink and danced. \240 Some guy was very close to me and I poked him with the pick from Jeff’s martini.
The pricked, I was the pricker. \240 He moved away after that. \240 lol
The martini pick
Olivia with her Valentines gifts. \240
There is another art exhibition this afternoon and our new artist will be arriving next week.
This afternoon there were multiple pods of dolphins around the ship. \240Unfortunately I was not able to get pictures.
Jeff and I arranged to get massages late this afternoon before dinner. \240This was our valentines day gift to each other. I know we will have a wonderful relaxing afternoon.
Olivia is doing well and continues to be right at home at the Asp’s. \240 Reports are it is cold and gray in Tucson, so we are really happy out here on the sea.
We had the included tour today and departed the ship about 9. \240We drove to 3 locations the last being the port of Eden where we docked. The population of Eden is about 3200. \240Our cruise ship was the first to dock here since 2020. \240The town people were very friendly and it was a lovely city. \240 More about that later.
We walked back to the ship, taking the scenic route and stopped for pictures along the way
Jaw bones of a killer whale
Lighthouse at the museum
It’s windy
Olivia is doing well, we miss her so much!
Murals outside the museum describing the history of whaling and other commercial business in Eden.
We enjoyed lunch, pizza and fresh oysters at the Australasia Hotel. \240The hotel was beautiful and fully renovated keeping a large amount of its prior elegance. \240The hotel was built in 1904.
We then departed for the next stop Pambula, it was a quaint town and we stopped at the local pub for our first beer of the day, a Carlton. \240 On the \240walk back to the bus we photographed several of the towns murals painted on the front and sides of buildings.
No wild kangaroo today
The town, Merimbula was right on the harbor and there was a large oyster farm we could see from the dock. \240A large seahorse greeted us as we disembarked from the bus.
Yard art
When we reached the ship a host of staff were out to greet us, serving drinks and making us feel welcome. \240I started the wave, that was fun.
The drive to the first town about 30 minutes away was lovely. \240It is amazing how quickly Australia becomes rural. \240There was a golf course along the way that typically has wild kangaroos roaming around.
Last stop was Eden and the whaling museum. \240 This is quite a place. \240They have the skeleton of a whale named Old Tom and the museum was built to display his remains. \240 Very interesting place
Today we sailed into Sydney around 5:30 AM, we got up so we can enjoy the view of the harbor and the opera house as we port.
Our Tucson group and our guide, Adam. \240 He called us the Adam’s Family all day.
Following lunch we stopped at one more overlook.
We did get some great pictures of the tiny penguins that we saw a few nights ago.
I picked up these souvenirs at the gift shop today.
Ok, \240we have been onboard for almost 60 days and the usual accident prone Mica has been held in check until this morning. \240While I was rushing to get out on the balcony and see the sail in I jammed my left foot into a chair. \240So….. my toes are swollen and the top of my foot is black and blue. \240 I had been doing so well.
The skyway provides a great view of the waterfall and the gorge. \240 There are also additional views of the Three Sisters Rocks.
The second adventure was riding down the side of the mountain on the steepest train in the hemisphere. \240 What a ride and you can adjust your seat to increase the incline. \240What an experience!
After another hour in the bus we arrived at an animal sanctuary. \240There were many animals including kangaroos, koala, many birds and other wildlife. \240 The interesting fact is all of these species are native to Australia and many are endangered.
One particular kangaroo \240caught my eye as he reminded me of Felix our Siamese cat who had a “control problem” when it came to eating food. \240This kangaroo was inside the feed trough eating.
We did see the largest pelican we had ever seen! \240They were over 3 feet tall.
Our driver Adam then picked up our tickets for Scenic World, 4 experiences on the mountain. \240 There is a skyway, railway, walkway, and cableway.
The next adventure was a lovely walk through the rainforest. \240The entire area is built on a reclaimed coal mine. \240Mining started in the area in the 1800’s and continued until the mid 1900’s.
We completed the experience with a cable car ride back up the mountain. \240From here we left the mountain and drove to a local restaurant for lunch.
We returned to the ship, showered and had dinner. \240 Many of our fellow passengers attended a concert tonight, but we returned too late from our Blue Mountain excursion to attend. \240 At 9 Viking served late night desserts and appetizers on deck 7. \240 The food was beautiful!
We are taking a 9 hour Blue Mountain tour with a small group of fellow travelers organized through Anderson Tours. \240 It is a long day, but promises to be memorable. \240We leave the city and head toward the Blue Mountains about 2 hours away from the cruise port. We arrive at the first stop The Three Sisters Rocks. \240The view is breathtaking!
We stopped on our way to the Blue Mountains for a brief break. \240 Jeff had coffee and I captured these pictures at one of the stores.
Our second day in Sydney and we are off for a tour of the Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach. Originally we were booked to do a behind the scenes tour of the opera house, but it was cancelled by the venue. \240 We were very disappointed so this tour was the backup.
We leave the cruise port, which is very commercial and also experiencing tremendous growth and construction. \240There are both new and old buildings.
Our lunch drinks. \240 Chardonnay and a 4 pines beer.
Sail out is around 6 tonight and the view from out suite should be spectacular. \240 Jan and Gregg are stopping by for cocktails and to enjoy the sail out.
The fascinating part of the tour was the way the concrete shells were formed and the building was constructed over 16 years and 1.5 M cost. All the materials came from Australia with the exception of the glass(France) and the tiles(Sweden).
After the tour we located the Opera Bar a place Meredith suggested we visit, so we located it and had a beer.
We arrived at the Opera House to discover it was a limited tour and no pictures were permitted in the performance theaters.
Still we were able to see the three minor theaters, the Playhouse, Studio and Drama. \240I was also able to get some pictures in public areas which is permitted.
We walked about 1.4 miles toward the cruise ship shuttle bus pickup and stopped along the way at a resturant on the Harbour for lunch, fish and chips. We passed the Marriott Jeff called home when he worked for HP, also we saw some lovely flowers and the Thunder boat cruise, which utilizes purple raincoats due to the excessive amount of water on the tour,
Our first stops was just passed the Botanical Gardens across from the Opera House. \240 We got great pictures of the building and the Harbour.
Note the two colors of the tiles that form the pattern for the roof. \240 White and off white.
While we couldn’t take pictures inside here are some photos that I was able to capture from their monitors.
Here are some pictures of the opera house from the harbour at night. \240 It so beautiful.
We have a sea day today and I trotted off to the calligraphy class which will be held the next 6 sea days. \240This is something I have always wanted to learn. \240 The weather is warm and the sea is calm. We have trivia at noon and then an Australian wine tasting. \240 Very busy.
Olivia has been very busy watching birds and playing with Dottie. She is quite at home! \240Steve said yesterday Olivia has such fun watching birds and they have fun watching her. \240That’s great.
Calligraphy class was very interesting we learned some basic strokes and 6 letters. \240Our instructor Patricia is assisted by Penny, they are fro Sydney and with us until Bali.
It is a beautiful afternoon. The temperature is in the high 80’s and it is very smooth sailing.
This morning we dropped anchor in Mooloolaba, Australia. We are going ashore around 10:00 and visiting the aquarium on the island. Some passengers are taking a coach to Brisbane, about 45 minutes away.
It is lovely outside today, in the mid 80’s and sunny. \240This is the view from our cabin.
Tonight we are having dinner with John and Ethel Ruth, another nice couple we met on the ship. After dinner we attended the evening guest speaker, Dr Robin Lee, his topic The Story of Mutiny on the Bounty. \240 The topic was very interesting. \240Viking has done a great job with the guest speakers and their topics.
We arrived at the SeaLife Aquarium for our tour. \240The facility was very nice and well done. \240 We saw many fish, seals, penguins, and coral. \240 It was a wonderful experience.
After the aquarium we walked around the port then settled in for lunch at The Dock. \240 Of course there was Australian beer. \240 Gregg and Jan happened along and we had lunch together.
Olivia is still doing well. \240 We miss this little face.
The penguins are moulting, it looks very uncomfortable to us.
Today is a sea day, but we are busy. \240 I have calligraphy, then we have trivia and later a wine tasting, \240 Tonight, Rick and Mary Buddras, \240a couple from Tucson, are coming for cocktails before we have dinner at Manfredi’s.
The day is warm and the sea is pretty calm. \240We are cruising the Coral Sea on our way to Whitsunday Island.
After the wine tasting we enjoyed some carefree time on our cabin balcony reading and relaxing.
After dinner we went to Torshaven to have a final drink and enjoy the band. \240Great evening
Calligraphy is coming along we have learned to make all the letters and in our next class we will move away from markers and actually use ink. \240Scary I’m not the neatest person. \240Class is fun and today I practiced writing the names of our kids. \240 Improvement is needed.
While I was in class Jeff walked 3 miles. \240 I need to get back out on the walking deck.
The wine tasting was 4 Australian wines, two white and two red. \240 We sat with Ray and Mara also from Tucson and part of our trivia group. \240 The non winning trivia group I might add. \240
Today we anchor and take the tender to Whitsunday Island. \240 Jeff and I are doing a catamaran tour and snorkeling. This was one of the excursions that was at the top of our list. \240 The challenge may be the weather, as in addition to the rain there may be lightning. \240 We will have to see. \240We are having cocktails with Russ andvJan tomorrow evening when we return
I’m working on an independent art project, I took a picture of Olivia and traced it onto onion skin paper and then transferred it to art stock for painting. \240 My goal is to paint several pictures of our beloved cat. \240 Here is the picture I used, we will see how it turns out.
Our friends Mary and Pam
Well below is the excursion we signed up for and later a recap of the actual experience.
Well we start the day off it is warm, but sprinkling, however the ship indicated the tour would proceed. \240We tendered over to the Whitsunday cruise dock, and as we were late we were immediately taken from the tender and boarded the catamaran. \240The boat is lovely, a nice lilac color and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. \240
After an hour we arrive at the area, but instead of snorkeling off the back of the boat the crew takes us in a RIB to the beach where we can put on our fins and snorkel, but they indicate the visibility is poor and we will probably not see anything. \240So we ride in the RIB to the beach carrying our fins and when we arrive it is all rocky, the waves are very high and it is almost impossible to stand up. \240We sit down, put on our fins and go to the water, but there are so many small rocks and shells that my fins are immediately filled with debris. \240 We take off our fins in the water and try again, this worked a little better. \240 We snorkeled for about 1/2 hour rarely seeing bottom and not one fish or coral.
Sooooo…….we got back on the RIB, that would make a sad Utube video, as the sand kept sliding and getting back in proved very challenging. \240 Good news we made it back on and proceeded to the awaiting catamaran.
Pretty much everyone came back to the vessel in short order as the conditions were so bad. \240We dried off and shared a beer while enjoying lunch.
Now the real fun begins, not that there has not been enough. \240 We arrive and the tender is on its way and the cruise director indicates we should wait on the catamaran as the tender will be along shortly. \240 So we wait, then after 15 minutes or so we are walked to the visitors center to discover a long line of passengers waiting for the tender. \240We don’t get on the first tender after another 20 minute wait, but that’s ok as the next one is right there and ready for us. \240Yea!!! We board and we are the last tender of the day as we are embarking for Cairns late this afternoon. \240Ok, we should be back in about 15 minutes, but no while doing the final count guest services determines that 4 people are not accounted for. \240We wait nearly an hour on the tender in the rain, two are found on the ship, two are still MIA. \240The captain says they must be found and we can get off the tender and wait, or remain on the tender in the rain. \240We remain on and a guest leads the tender in Row, Row, Row your boat in rows. \240 This moves to 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall and goes downhill from there. \240 Two hours later we are able to return to the ship, two passengers are still missing, but mutiny was getting close to occurring on the tender. \240Later the passengers called the ship, they were still on Whitsunday island as they were lost and missed the tender. \240 \240Viking made arrangements for them to be transferred to Carins the next day.THE END!
Olivia had a big day she climbed up on the window sill to get a closer look at the birds. I’m not sure how she managed this, but it was cute.
On one last note our landscaper, Joe installed the new yard art which has been placed between our driveway and the Turner’s, a joint effort on all our parts to accent our driveways. \240 Bonnie found the art and she and Chuck executed the ordering, Jeff worked to get the installation approved by the HOA. \240 All is good and it is beautiful. \240
We are given a stinger suit as we board and then instructed on the sea conditions ( poor, low visibility, highest tide of the year and windy), the plans for the morning, assignment of flippers and masks and snorkels. \240 We have our own masks and snorkels, so we only needed fins. \240 We donned our stinger suits and got ready for the fun as we leave port. \240Good news the ship does have a liquor license. \240We are going to need it.
We learn the safety measures and how to call for help and to signal if you need to be picked up out of the water, before we enter the water.
While waiting for everyone to finish lunch some of us danced to YMCA and other tunes. \240 Of course I joined in, Jeff did not, surprise.
We returned early to the pier. \240There were many nice houses and resorts along the way.
We port in Cairns this morning and are here until 10:00 PM tonight. \240 We have a 7 hour tour to the Great Barrier Reef with our friends Jan and Gregg. \240 This will be a fun day especially if the weather will cooperate.
As we left the reef it began to rain again and the choppy water returned, after a brief period of calmness.
The boat has 3 decks, two inside and there are 150 of us on the excursion. \240 We were never crowded and there was plenty of room for all of us. \240It was about an hour and a half to the reef, the water was choppy, but it was fine.
Jeff attempted to return all of our lunch plates and silverware, but on the steps he dropped a few. \240We enjoyed laughing with him about this,
We returned to the dock about 1.5 hours later, \240it was a great day. \240On the way back to the ship there was great art.
When we arrived at the reef, we put on our stinger suits and headed for the back of the boat to get off into the ocean. \240Jeff’s suit was too small, who gives a 44L guy a large suit? \240So round two for an XL suit, it works much better. The water was so choppy that life jackets were recommended and we both put one on. \240I got in the water, but Jeff had issues with his flippers and his mask so we were separated. \240The waves kept pushing me left and finally one of the guides asked if he could take me to see the coral. \240The experience was fabulous we saw many fish large and small, schools of fish and a giant blue clam. \240 Unfortunately Jeff had the underwater camera so there are no pictures. \240The water was warm, and the waves were very high.
Jeff got in the water, but he said he didn’t see anything where he was swimming. \240 When I got out after about 50 minutes or so later, he was already on the deck and out of his stinger suit.
The experience was wonderful and it was one I would certainly repeat, hopefully with a camera.
We had lunch, steaks, fish and assorted salads. \240Linda and Shaun joined us and we had a hoot on the ride over and back. Of course there were beers for all.
We dock at 8 and off the ship around 8:30, a sort walk to the boat. \240On the way we pass a number of Restuarant’s and bars, all of which look yummy.
Dinner tonight with Jan and Gregg. \240The menu had oysters Rockefeller and lobster tails. \240 A great seafood night after a day in the ocean.
Olivia decided to pose for the camera today. \240 Here are some great pictures of our princess cat, courtesy of Alane.
Today is a sea day and we are sailing the Coral Sea. \240I have calligraphy class, we have trivia and a Vodka Mixology class. \240Just what we need more creative ways to use vodka.
The ocean is very calm, the temperature and humidity are higher. \240I see some islands and land masses from the balcony. \240
Calligraphy went well. \240 We got to use real pens with real ink for the first time. \240 In the past we used markers. \240I only got a little ink on my left hand which is strange since I’m right handed. \240We practiced words and sentences today. \240 Spacing is key and very challenging to make the words look correct. \240 I practiced writing several lines then concentrated on working with letters that were challenging side by side. My last page I wrote without predrawn lines, that is even harder.
Today at lunch Viking offered a truffle pasta station on the pool deck. \240 It smelled heavenly, but I abstained. \240 Many of our fellow passengers were participating. \240 Even Ron the Hotel Manager was outside cooking.
This afternoon I made an attempt to paint Olivia. \240 Here is my first pass. \240I will work on it more in the next few sea days. \240 It needs more shading.
Here is what I worked from. \240
The vodka mixology lass was awesome. \240 We learned how to make a cosmopolitan, lemon drop, and sex on the Beach(bitch) if pronounced by out bartender. \240We took pictures with each drink.
We had a great dinner with Ray and Mara, great evening!
Vodkas offered in Torshaven
Our picture behind the bar
Our friends Ray and Mara behind the bar
Olivia is doing well, she has decided to use Alane’s hand as a toy. She is so busy and still a kitten at heart. \240 Everything is a toy.
While waiting for trivia to start there were many small islands on the starboard side of the ship. \240 The water is very deep and the captain indicated it was 84 degrees.
Trivia, let by Assistant Cruise Director, Michael was fun, still out of the winners circle again. \240Bummer!
I volunteered to make the last cocktail, sex on the Beach. \240 It was fun. \240 Jeff took pictures.
We anchored in the coral sea early this morning and we tendered to Thursday Island(TI), our last port in Australia. \240TI is part of the Torres Straight consisting of over 274 islands, including Wednesday and Friday islands. \240 The island is beautiful with lovely beaches and the air and water temperatures are over 84 degrees. That’s the good news, here is the sad news, it is not possible to swim or snorkel on the islands due to the crocodiles, sharks and stingers. \240
When we embarked on the tender the sea was quite rough and rain is predicted.
The harbor was really pretty and we enjoyed the walk.
The weather in Tucson improved and the birds returned, Olivia was very happy!
Tonight we are having dinner with Jan and Russ Story and Kay and Ross Sutherland.
We arrived on the island with a population of around 3000, we walked up and down many of the small streets. There was some really cool turtle art just off the pier.
Our intent was to find a pub and have our traditional beer. \240This failed as the pub didn’t open until 11:00 and it began to rain cats and dogs. We returned to the ship, it was very rocky on the tender ride back. \240The captain determined that the ocean conditions were such that the tender operations needed to be discontinued and all passengers needed to be back onboard. \240 \240Around 2:00 we departed TI earlier than the 5:00 PM established time. \240From our balcony I was able to see many islands on both sides of the ship.
Tonight we are having dinner with Jan and Russ Story and Kay and Ross Sutherland. \240 It will be a fun evening.
We walked through the small town and found some interesting buildings. One was a laundromat combined with a car rental. \240Another the post office also selling LP, gas, frozen meat, and other supplies. \240There were several lovely churches and the people were very friendly.
Today is the first of 3 sea days and we are sailing the Arafura Sea. \240We have been at sea for 67 days, but it seems like yesterday. \240We are very busy today with calligraphy, cooking class, trivia, wine tasting and a birthday dinner for Mary at Manfredi’s this evening.
The ocean is gray and while it isn’t raining it looks like it should be. \240It is very hot and humid.
Cheese soufflé, yummy
Casper, restaurant manager and Stephen, Mary’s husband.
I made some more improvements in calligraphy class today. \240 \240We only have 2 more classes so I need to work hard. \240I am still having difficulties with certain letters such as u, d, f, l and w.
After the tasting the cafe was having a soup day with beer and cheese soup, minestrone, and clam chowder, served in a bowl or in a bread bowl. \240 All were delicious.
I made an appointment to have my hair cut in a few days. \240It has grown about 2 inches and is getting out of control. I am concerned to let someone new cut it, but I can’t look like a shaggy dog. \240 If she cuts it too short I will look like a poodle. \240 Fingers crossed it will go well.
The party was fun, Mary had ordered great wines and dinner was delicious. \240 After dinner we went to Torshaven and danced.
We are off to trivia at noon followed by wine tasting. \240 I will need to rest up for the birthday party tonight. Trivia we didn’t fair too well, but it was fun. \240 Wine tasting consisted of 3 Ports that were all delicious, \240served with chocolate. \240Milos and Andreau did a wonderful job.
Cooking class was very entertaining and we learned some neat tips. \240 Chef made tenderloin with mushroom demi and mashed potatoes. \240The pastry chef made a lovely chocolate and mousse dessert.
Great end to a wonderful evening. \240 It was fun to celebrate with new friends.
Sea day number two, I have calligraphy, we have trivia and the ship is throwing a brunch today from 9:20-2:00. \240I’m sure there will be lots of food. The grand event of the evening is the Guest Talent Show tonight. \240 We have several friends who are displaying their talents. \240Our close group of friends determined we had no talents that were worth sharing.
Calligraphy was all about making animals or zoo graphics. \240My table, including Jan and Mary decided to abandon the activity. \240We didn’t like the animals we were making nor were we having fun. \240And since it is our cruise we don’t have to do anything we don’t want to. \240Here is a sample of what I did \240before the abandoning. \240 Very poor.
Brunch was lovely, it was held on the entire pool deck and the winter garden. \240 So much food and everything was beautifully displayed and delicious. \240There were carvings stations, seafood( not see food and eat it as we have been doing), cheese, breads, soups, salads, meats, desserts and more. Oh I forgot the bar, how could that happen? The fruit carvings \240and displays were very creative.
Maribella hit a lead off double. \240
The viking talent show was very good. \240We enjoyed fellow travelers singing, playing the piano, playing the guitar, singing and also the viking \240chorus. \240It was an entertaining hour and one half. \240Our friend Gregg played guitar for several songs.
Our Friend Gregg performed several songs. \240
There was so much food I was overwhelmed and ended up with some shrimp cocktail, a ham and Swiss on a croissant and a cup cake. \240 Of course there a mimosa or two to finish it off.
After the show we went to Torshaven and danced for a couple hours. \240 We had a great time.
Our granddaughter, Maribella and her team Arizona Red had 3 games today. \240 They win 1 and lost 2 unfortunately, but Bells had a double and played well. \240As team captain she was on the field for the coin toss. \240 Her new team picture also is here.
Our last sea day and once again we are busy. \240I have calligraphy, my final class, then we have trivia and following that we want to attend the Sea Trials being held at the pool. \240Passengers signed up to construct boats from materials found on the ship. \240 This should be interesting.
We are cruising the Timor Sea and the water has become more rocky and not as calm. Sleeping last night was challenging and for the first time the captain closed the walking deck due to the waves and high winds.
I completed my calligraphy project and in the process discovered the quote I had been practicing writing I had worded incorrectly. \240 I had used spirit instead of sweetness. \240 Sooooo. \240 I needed to do it two times.

Alane and Steve went away overnight and a friend checked on the girls and fed them. \240The house was still intact when they returned. \240The girls were happy to see them and quite friendly, then 5 minutes later they were back to spitting. \240One probably thought the other one got more scratches.
We attended the Sea Trials and the pool, was so rocky that the boats had to be floated in the hot tub. \240 There were nine entries and the boats were judged on creativity, use of sustainable materials, and ability to float for 20 seconds. \240Here is a picture of each entry on dry land and in the water. \240 All entries did float! \240It was a fun afternoon.
Tied for 3rd place
Late afternoon we have an informational meeting to go over the details for our overnight in Ho Chi Minh city in a few weeks.
We are having dinner alone tonight at Manfredi’s. Great dinner then off to Torshaven to dance. \240 Big day tomorrow at Komodo National Park and visiting the Komodo dragons.
We arrived at our tender spot at 9:00 AM this morning and after breakfast headed to the tender for our tour of Rinca Island and the wild life. \240You are only permitted on the island with a guide and escort. \240We waited in the star theater for the tour to begin, moved to the tender for the 20 minute ride to the island.
They catch and tag dragons over a period of time to record growth. \240
Of course we couldn’t leave the island without our traditional beer.
We have a quiet evening and leave for 3 days in Bali this afternoon for arrival tomorrow morning.
We also saw monkeys, but did not see any crocodiles, wild pigs, sea turtles, \240or many birds, but there are 100’s that are native, including an eagle.
Our guide Firman was very informative and greeted us on the dock. \240We had 3 escorts including Firman.
The monkey is challenging to see but he is in the middle of the picture
We have a great view of the islands from our balcony. \240 It is so pretty here, but no swimming or snorkeling due to the crocodiles.
We did not enter the jungle we walked on raised board walks and immediately began seeing some wildlife including deer and water buffaloes. \240I was amazed by the tree roots in the water.
We saw many Komodo dragons and Jeff and I recalled when when our friends Tuck and Reiko took their grandson to the zoo and he wanted to see the kimono dragons! \240It was a great laugh then and now.
Olivia had a big day and needed a long nap. \240 This is unusual for her, she is really busy all day.
We stopped at the museum which was very nicely done and provided a great deal of information on the island and the wildlife making it home. \240Since Komodo dragons are carnivores they eat the other wildlife on the island and they have no predators.
When we returned I had a hair cut scheduled. \240Alex did a wonderful job in the viking salon,
We are porting in Bali today for the next three days. \240 Today we are headed for a beach resort to enjoy the sand and sun. \240As we enter the harbor people many water sports including sailing, boating, parasailing, jet skis and the water pressure thing that shuts you in the air. \240I don’t know what it is called.
We arrived at the resort and the gardens were beautiful and we enjoyed walking through the area on the way to the beach. There was also a pool with swimup bar.
Of course we enjoyed our beer of the island, a local brew that was cold and tasty.
I saw this bike and sign in the resort lobby and found it interesting
We returned to the ship, here you can see our ship from across the harbor.
We boarded the bus and there was a 30 minute drive to the resort. \240On the drive there were many interesting buildings and statues to admire.
As we left the ship for our excursion at the private resort beach there were Balinese dancers and musicians on the gangway. \240The young women were stunning.
Our second day in Bali and we have a tour that will take us to an indoor market, the Bali Museum and a temple tour.
Every house has a small temple and each day and offering is made and left outside. \240 Here is the daily offering at the temple.
Beer of the day, a local Bali Beer
Welcome dance
The museum cat. \240She seemed to love everyone who entered the museum.
Flower Dance
Warrior Dance
The 4 th floor had clothing and below is an example of native dress for both male and female.
After the museum visit we walked to the temple. \240Women must have their shoulders covered and men if wearing shorts had to put on a sarong. \240 Jeff was outfitted with his sarong, while I had a scarf with me. \240The outdoor temple was beautiful.
Late afternoon a dinner cruise ship took a group of locals out on a cruise. \240 They had a gathering on the cruise dock and played local music and all were dressed in pirate hats. \240When the group boarded the music really picked up and when the cruise began they were having so much fun and as they passed our ship they all waved. \240 \240As Jeff noted they weren’t going to sneak up on anyone with all the loud music and cheering. \240It was fun!
The ship returned to the dock still booming music, many dancing people and lite to the max at about 8:00. \240The ship didn’t cruise out of the harbor just out a small distance for 3 hours. \240 It still looked fun.
Olivia is doing well. \240 She now has a specific sound and mouth movement she makes when she sees birds. \240It sounds sort of like a cluck. \240Our cat has become a bird seeking chicken.
After the show we went dancing at Torshaven. \240While we are on Bali it is very cool, many of the viking staff are from here or nearby and the staff has had family onboard to see the ship and spend time with their loved ones. \240 They are able to dine while on the ship and tonight our favorite singer from the Viking Band, Josie had her parents on board. \240 It was fun for everyone
Tonight Viking has a special presentation of Balinese dancers onboard for entertainment. \240 What an experience, it was fascinating!
It is snowing in Tucson, a rare occasion and Dottie and Olivia are bored, so they are going to make each other into toys. Here are some backyard pictures from Asp’s and the Bane Casa. \240Not exactly golf weather.
We leave the cruise port for the drive and there are so many buildings and statues it is rather overwhelming. \240 One thing the Balinese love love love their scooters. Instead of bike lanes there are scooter lanes. \240You will see families with mom, dad and child on a scooter. \240 Very interesting. \240 Here are some assorted scooter pictures.
We arrived at the market with 4 floors of merchandise. \240 Floor 1 was dried fish and meat, the smell was challenging and we were relieved to move to the second floor. \240The women balancing and carding great amounts of goods on there heads was interesting. \240 This is not a skill that I would have.
Floor 2 was fresh vegetables and some of the offerings were very unique. \240 I don’t remember the names but many I had not seen before.
Floor 3 had nuts, candy and household utensils. \240Each vendor wanted to sell you something and it was challenging to say no and keep moving. \240
From the market we drove to the Bali museum and public temple. \240When we arrived there were many people selling wares. \240 Our guide said not to look at them and definitely do not touch the item as this will mean you are buying it. \240It was somewhat over whelming to move through the vendors to get inside the museum.
March 3rd here and it is our daughter Meredith’s birthday, but not until tomorrow in the states. \240 We wished her happy birthday via text and will call her tomorrow on her official day. Today we are going on a private snorkeling excursion with our friends Jan and Gregg and Ted and Joann. \240This will be fun, the tour is taking us to an island near Bali on a speedboat and we will snorkel in 4 different coves. \240 When we return to the ship we are sailing to Semarang. \240The 3 couples are having dinner on the ship after our adventure.
Sunrise this morning.

Below are the GoPro pictures from the snorkel in the 4 different coves. \240 There are some great pictures of the sea turtle. \240 It was an astonishing day and one that will be remembered
More sea turtle, she is eating
Jan and Gregg
The next 8 pictures feature the sea turtle. \240Look carefully sometimes it is hard to see.
A van picked us up at the ship and took us to the beach where a small motor boat ferried us to the speedboat. \240We docked for lunch and a golf cart took us to and from the restaurant. \240 In our case not plane, train and automobile but van, slow boat, speed boat, golf cart! \240What a great day the snorkeling was exceptional and we saw eel, dolphins, sea turtles and many different fish.
Our lunch restaurant, the pool was beautiful, the view of the harbor and our boat unexpected and we had a great meal. \240We also ha our usual beer of the day, this time a Heineken.
Sea day today before we port in Semarang tomorrow. \240The ocean is calm and the temperature is in the 80’s. We are resting up from all the snorkeling activities from yesterday. \240We are a little sore and a little sunburned, but not bad.
We have a new artist on board and now we are doing collages for the next 6 sea days. \240It was fun today and it brought back memories of days gone by. \240Here is my project \240made from cut up pieces of paper. \240I’m anxious to see what else we do.
Andreau,Food snd Beverage Manager
Mara and Ray
Shane, the troublemaker
Milo’s and his fiancée Nancy. \240
Birgit and Erik
This afternoon we had trivia. \240We were in the middle of the pack, it seems like that is our usual place, but it was fun.
Russ and Jan are stopping by for cocktails and then we have dinner at Manfredi’s tonight with the new menu. \240Afterward dancing under the stars starts at 9, it is always fun with great music and a rocking band. Erik and Berket joined us on the pool deck along with Mara and Ray, and Linda and Shane. \240A wonderful time was had by all.
Some folks who did calligraphy displayed their work in the Wintergarden today. \240 We stopped by, however as the instructor had departed the ship in Bali there weren’t many contributors. \240The work, however was very nice.
We ported in Semarang this morning and we have a 4 hour excursion visiting 2 temples, The. Central train station and Rainbow Village appropriately named. This is a commercial port and area, there is really nothing here except the dock and welcome center
As we left the ship this morning there were dancers and musicians on the cruise dock and inside the vistors center
The temple was beautiful and there was also a temple cat
The house of 1000 doors
Our next stop was the Chinese temple, it was extravagant consisting of many buildings
On our drive back to the ship there were many modern and unique buildings. Semarang is a very interesting city.
These people love their scooters
The flowers on the island were so inexpensive. \240I got 2 dozen roses for $3.00 and all the flowers are beautiful.
We were able to FaceTime with Olivia this morning, we are 10 hours different from AZ. \240Olivia still enjoys the Christmas tunnel and plays in it daily.
Last we arrived at Rainbow village as all the houses and buildings are painted different colors. \240We walked down the street past many florist shops and interesting plants before we entered the village. Many of the walls had painting and art.
The drive to the central train station and the first temple wasn’t really that interesting. \240The train station and park were pretty and the street walking to the temple had fountains, artwork and statues.
We have a sea day and another busy day. \240I have collage class, we have trivia, wine tasting, port talk and a dinner party with Mary and Stephen at Manfredi’s tonight.
In collage class we worked on a rendition of a classic Indonesia offering that each family makes every day. It was fun. \240 While I was at class Jeff was out on our balcony and the cabin steward didn’t realize he was out there and locked him out. \240 We are still laughing about it. \240He texted me at class and said he was locked out, but no hurry to free him. \240I came back over an hour later when I saw his text and freed him.
Trivia we were second again, the questions were very hard as usual, but we had fun.
Wine tasting was an assortment of Cabernet Sauvignon wines from Australia, Chile, California and France. The wines were very different
My collage project
After dinner we played Left,Right,Center. \240Jeff won the first game, but we lost the second. When you win everyone drops dollars on you. \240 \240Fun evening!
Today is our last sea day before 3 days in Vietnam. \240I have collage class, we have trivia and this evening we have a Mixology Class making gin cocktails.
In collage class we made water lily or lotus flowers. \240I selected the water lily as my mother had a fish pond in her back year with water lilys and she loved it dearly. \240This project brought back happy memories of my mom.
My inspiration
6 guest mix each cocktail and the the cocktails are served to the audience
Mica, Joanne and Mara
Milos our host did a terrific job
Mara,Ray, Mica, and Jeff. \240The Rigel’s are from Marana near our home
My project
I mixed the last cocktail, the white lady and all was going well until it wasn’t. \240I tried to shake the martini shaker with one hand and had a little explosive action. \240 I saved most of the drink and managed not to wear any.
We attended Gin mixology class. \240We made 3 cocktails. \240
We port in Phu My about one hour from Saigon. \240 This morning we are sailing the river. \240There are a number of fishermen and fish and oyster farms. \240We are not certain of what river we are sailing as there are numerous tributaries. \240The water is calm, but brown and muddy looking.
Busses lined up for the excursions.
The river
Olivia actually jumped up and sat in Steve’s lap today. \240That is a big move for her and let us know how comfortable she is at her temporary home.
The skyline of Ho Chi Minh City. \240We are porting at a industrial sea port about an hour away with all the traffic.
The port is very commercial and it took over 3 hours for the ship to be cleared and passengers to begin disembarking. \240We had planned to stay near the port today and we walked down to some tents selling tshirts, snacks, backpacks and purses just to get out. \240 It was a very quiet day. \240Jeff and I walked down the cruise dock and took our picture
A new bridge being built
Pictures of Ho Chi Minh City tonight from our balcony. \240There is still a great deal of smog.
Today we are leaving early for Ho Chi Minh City, the drive is a little over an hour depending on the traffic. \240 \240We are staying overnight in the city and have a host of activities to keep us busy including, the market, Chinatown and a temple, a pedicab ride and the famous water puppet show. \240 We are very excited for this adventure
I always take a picture of the ship location and phone number before we depart the ship in case we get misplaced or there is extra excitement on our excursion(I.E Mica has an encounter with something strange and is injuried). \240 Those who know me well understand my ability to find this exciting opportunities.
On our drive to Ho Chi Minh City there was a tremendous amount of traffic. \240There are 14M residents and 12M scooters. Scooters are everywhere and people carry the most interesting things on them. Families will ride with very young children on the scooter, it appears there is no set age to begin driving one. Our guide told us if we crossed the street just to wait for a break in the traffic and walk (don’t run or change your pace) and the scooters will drive around you. \240This proved to be true as we are still alive and well. Here are some examples of the traffic and the scooters.
Ho Chi Minh City at night is so spectacular. \240The city is much prettier at night, but there is still an astonishing amount of traffic. \240
On the drive to the city there were some interesting buildings and structures, but certainly once in the city the landscape was very modern. There are beautiful gardens and floral parks. \240 Everything is so green.
A bridal couple were taking pictures in front of the palace
After lunch we checked into the Sheraton and then later continued our tour at the Minh Phuong Lacquer fabricator and stor. \240We were able to see the actual process of making lacquered \240pieces. \240Next was dinner and the awaited \240highlight the water puppet show. We are tired it has been a long very hot day.
While I didn’t make a purchase at the lacquer store the work was beautiful and the process fascinating.
Our touring group, we spend 2 days together and had a great deal of fun.
The courtyard and you can see how the rooms surround it.
Finally off to the Water Puppet Show. \240Each act has a theme and the puppets do the dancing and acting in the water. \240The coordination this act requires is amazing. \240 The puppets dance and move in a sequence. \240 The program and pictures from each act follow. \240 This was the high point of our day!
Courtyard in the presidents private quarters.
After this stop we went to the Ben Thanh Market, one of the largest in the city. \240Frankly it was a bit overwhelming as the vendors were anxious to sell something and they were rather aggressive. \240 Jeff bought two T-shirt’s and we agreed to go outside and wait for the bus. \240Here are some pictures of the market
We arrived at the restaurant for a delicious dinner \240 \240Far too much food, but a nice variety. \240The menu and some pictures of the restaurant and dinner follow.
The puppet masters
Here is some more information I found on how the puppetry is performed:
Water puppetry (Vietnamese: Múa rối nước) is a tradition that dates back as far as the 11th century when it originated in the villages of the Red River Delta area of northern Vietnam. Today's Vietnamese water puppetry is a unique variation on the ancient Asian puppet tradition.
Water puppetryVietnamese alphabetMúa rối nướcChữ Nôm𦨂𦇒渃Literal meaningMaking puppetsdance (on) water
The puppets are made out of wood and then lacquered. The shows are performed in a waist-deep pool. A large bamboo rod supports the puppet under the water and is used by the puppeteers, who are normally hidden behind a screen, to control them. Thus the puppets appear to be moving over the water. When the rice fields would flood, the villagers would entertain each other using this form of puppet play. \240So now we know!
On the way back we noticed many young people outside restaurants and coffee houses sitting on blankets on the sidewalk. \240 Our driver said the younger generation does this nightly and they simply gather and talk for 3-4 hours and then go home. \240 It rather looks like a homeless group of people, \240 To each his own. \240We returned to the Sheraton and I noticed these lovely flowers in the lobby.
Below is our actual itinerary as we are leaving at 8:30 today instead of noon so the schedule of events has been modified. \240We are both really interested in this trip and ready to see Saigon
Our next stop was at the Reunification Palace, the prior home of the president and now a museum. \240 We toured the third floor which housed the offices and living quarters of the president. Then we went down to the bunkers which were built for safety of the governement officials and as a command center.
Before entering we saw some tanks from the war on display on the grounds. \240 The landscaping was beautiful especially the courtyard in the presidents private quarters.
We arrived at the Vietnam Museum of History, which covers 1000 years of Asian history. \240 Very interesting items included statues, clothes, wooden sculptures, ceramic and weapons just to name a few. \240 There were gardens outside of the museum, this seems to be the norm.
The private quarters of the president were beautiful. \240Several bedrooms, one small and another large dining room , living room and a stunning courtyard with a pond and fountain. \240The courtyard is in the center and the rooms flank it in a “U” shape.
We then went to a much needed lunch at a local restaurant which was delicious. \240There was far too much food and of course beer
This morning we took a Pedicab ride around the city for about 45 minutes. \240We started at the hotel and ended at the cathedral and Post office. \240More on the post office later.
The pedal cab is interesting in that there are scooters and cars everywhere and with all the traffic and horn honking there is a lot going on and a lot to see.
There were many interesting buildings along the route
Micah guest services viking. \240He accompanied us for the two days
Our friend Jan
Shops inside these post office. \240
We arrived at the cathedral and it is challenging to see as it is covered in scaffolding. The renovation should take another 3 years. \240I did get a picture of it from a time prior to the renovation. \240 The grounds around the cathedral are beautiful also.
After the high caffeine coffee we went to the market. \240This is a wholesale market and it was astounding of the massive quantities of merchandise that were in the market. \240Someone commented this is where amazon shoppers start their stores. \240 Inventory control is non existent, merchants get large green bags of stock dropped off and the just open them and stack it up with everything else. \240Great bargains can be had with patience. \240 This was different than yesterday, there was no pressure to look or buy. \240A very different experience.
Flower shops were very prevalent in the area
Our last stop was Chinatown and a Chinese temple. \240The building was very old and historic. There was a tremendous amount of incense burning inside.
Now back to the ship, the commute could be well over an hour depending on traffic. \240The two days were very informative and interesting.
When we returned to the ship Viking \240management sent us a beautiful flowers arrangement. \240 What fun!
After this excursion we went to a coffe shop for Vietnamese coffee. \240Wow is it strong and like sweet mud. \240 The shop was quaint. \240Check out the helmet/hat rack at the door of the cafe. Yes those are rusty nails
Adjacent to the cathedral is the Post Office and what a beautiful building and who knew you could shop inside? \240Very interesting and the building was designed by the same man who designed the Eiffel Tower. \240
The roof top of the yellow building you see in the background is where the helicopter landed to remove the last Americans prior to the fall of Saigon. \240Historic yes. \240This building is a few blocks over from the cathedral and just visible.
Today we are in port near Ho Chi Minh City until 1:00 PM. \240 There really is nothing at the cruise port except commercial activity, but we might get off the ship and take a walk before we leave port. \240We are headed to Thailand tonight with a sea day tomorrow.
In Vietnam in order \240to enter the country via cruise ship we surrendered our passports for inspection and when we went ashore a Vietnamese Landing Card was issued. We were to keep this card with us while in country. \240 When we were overnight in Saigon our passports were returned for hotel check in.
Prior to departure today all landing cards and passports must be returned to the ship for inspection by the Vietnamese government prior to the ship sailing. \240Seems like an easy process? \240Well apparently not, as we are still in port and the cruise director has announced several times for passengers who have not turned in their passports and landing cards to please do so. \240 Who knows how long it will take to clear the ship for departure. \240Stay tuned. \240Ok we are departing only an hour late. \240 The people who thought the passport rules didn’t apply to them must have been tracked down and all,is good.
We had a good time chatting with friends and dancing. \240The weather was wonderful and the deck roof was partially open and the cool breeze was very nice.
Today as we depart there is a tremendous amount of barge traffic on the river. \240We are about 40 miles from down town Saigon and the smog is so thick today that from the balcony of our ship the skyline is not visible.
The city skyline at night
We had dinner at Manfredi’s with Birgit, Erik, Mary and Stephen. \240 We enjoyed a great dinner then off to the pool deck for dancing.
Tonight the ship is hosting dancing under the stars on the pool deck. \240 That is always fun as the temperature cools down, the bar staff makes crazy good cocktails and the band is always great. \240Tonight the band is featuring ABBA music.
Today is a sea day and my last collage class. \240 We have trivia at noon and the rest of the day free so I’m sure Jeff will exercise and write and I will paint and read.
Tomorrow we stop in Koh Samul, Thailand, a tender port.
The sea is a beautiful color of turquoise and very calm. \240The temperature is in the low 80’s and very pleasant without high humidity. \240Very pleasant.
Trivia was fun, but again not our day. \240 We started off strong and then we stumbled. \240 \240We have many more chances.
The roses below are the ones I bought 8 days ago in Semarang. \240 It is amazing they are still beautiful and not a dud among them.
Here is my final project from collage class along with my inspiration. \240Our instructors, Cathy and Linda have done a great job and everyone had a nice time. \240We had a really fun table and that makes the experience even more enjoyable.
The theme was silhouettes, I realized after I attached the tree that it was a little chubby. \240 Oh well next time. \240 I’m going to try and paint this silhouette and will put a new picture up
In Singapore some of the speakers and experts are getting off and going to other ships. \240 Russell Lee and his wife Gail and our collage instructors Cathy and Linda are all disembarking. \240 \240New experts will be joining the ship. \240 I can’t wait to see who joins us and the skills and expertise they will share. \240 This is one of the most interesting and exciting parts of the trip other than the experiences in port and making new friends
Olivia is doing well. \240We FaceTimed with her yesterday and she looked around for us, but since she really couldn’t see us she was bored quickly. \240Dottie and Livvy are getting along much better. \240 They might \240be BFF’s before we return. \240We miss her, but know she is very well cared for.
This afternoon Robin Petch, one of the speakers on board and a wildlife expert is sharing pictures he has taken from Florida to Bali. \240He is a very knowledgeable man and a great photographer. \240 This should be interesting. Here are some of the most interesting ones from the 250 he featured this afternoon.
We anchored near Kol Samui this morning and Jeff and I are doing a beach excursion. \240Sunrise this morning was beautiful.
We boarded the tender, not the usual viking tender, but a double decker one provided by the island. \240 It was very overcast when we departed a little after 9 this morning. \240 The tender ride was about 20 minutes to a quaint dock and town, then about 45 minutes to the beach location.
Jeff and I had our pictures taken as well.
There was even a beach dog!
We had a couple of cocktails they were so inexpensive $3.50 each.
We are moving the clock forward one hour tonight and it has been a very long day.
We also noticed that at many businesses there were shoes outside. \240 Apparently shoes are not welcome inside. \240The town was very nice with a lot of shops and galleries. \240 I especially liked these frog portraits.
We enjoyed the island and the beach. \240People were friendly, while few spoke good English they attempted to communicate.
While Jeff and I didn’t do a tour of the temples some friends, Laura and Paul Ryan shared pictures from their excursion. \240These are very beautiful and very old.
We were seafooded out so we decided to walk 300 meters up the street to Burger King. \240 The whopper was great, but the fries were wonderful. \240Burger King offered regional specialties. \240On the way we passed this Ronald McDonald statue.
There were hosts of vendors selling numerous items on the beach, wraps, sarongs, dresses, mobiles, \240cell phone covers, shell jewelry and more. \240They had very creative racks to carry the merchandise on a pole and then stick another pole in the sand to stand the merchandise up.
Scooters are still very much in use, \240but there were equal numbers of cars. \240 Interesting few people wore helmets and the people were very creative adding side cars and other attachments to the scooters. \240 Here are some examples :
On the way to the beach we saw many small family offering temples. \240 These were larger than we had seen on other islands and more decorative.
The waves were rather high and suddenly a sea doo came ripping across the water. \240We saw a man who was in distress. \240 The two men rescued him and brought him back to shore. \240 He seemed very nonchalant about it, he got off the sea doo and wandered down the beach.
Massages were available right on the beach. \240We didn’t take advantage of the opportunity, but many folks did. \240 The cost was so inexpensive. An hour massage was about $10.00.
We returned to the harbor for the return tender ride. \240The clouds have blown out and the landscape was much easier to see this afternoon.
We arrived at the beach and quickly located chairs and had drinks. \240 The water was warm, but the waves were very high and the staff encouraged us not to swim, but to wade near the shore.
Today is National K-9 Hero Day. \240 These brave animals serve our country everyday and should be honored. \240We saw an article about a K-9 service dog who retired and he flew home in business sitting in a seat. \240 Well deserved. Please don’t forget our brave service men and women who we also owe a huge debt of gratitude to everyday.
On our way to get lunch we saw many stores selling gasoline in bottles. \240 \240This we were told was for scooters and parents buy it for kids and they get a bottle a day and when it’s gone it’s gone, \240 \240A great way to learn about money and fuel efficiency. \240The cost is about $1.50 US. \240 These are not large bottles, but it is a scooter.
If it gets to the time that I must wear compression socks to the beach I’m giving up the sand. \240 \240I applaud this gentleman for his spirit.
Several of our friends were also on the beach. \240We had a wonderful time
Tonight we are having dinner with Ray and Mara, this promises to be another fun evening. \240 We probably will end up at Torshaven for dancing. We did go to Torshaven and had a great time. \240Andy Joy a saxophone player and a guest in the Viking Theater came in and played several songs with the band. \240 He is quite the Saxophone player
Our granddaughter, Maribella had softball games this weekend. \240Her team didn’t fair well, but she went 2 for 2 with a double and a triple. \240Good for her. \240She is swinging her new bat very well.
As we arrived in Kol Samui there was some street art. \240 It was pretty and interesting.
We have our last sea day before porting in Singapore for 4 days. \240 We are looking forward to so many things in Singapore. \240 I traveled there in 2018 with the zoo and Jeff worked there extensively. \240Unfortunately Jeff has seen nothing but airports and conference rooms so now is his chance to see the city. \240
Today was a bonus art class and I completed my final project. \240 \240We also have a exhibition of our 5 projects this afternoon. \240 There are so many beautiful projects.
These 4 are my work.
This afternoon I painted. \240 I worked on my picture of Olivia and I also did a watercolor of my collage picture. \240 Here are my efforts from this afternoon along with the inspiration.
We have trivia at noon. \240 We are feeling like our chance to win is getting closer. We didn’t do as well as we had hoped. \240But we had fun.
The exhibit of the Collage work was wonderful. \240We all were given the same project, but there are no two alike and each persons creativity takes over.
Prior to trivia there is a exhibition of work from the felting class. \240 The work has been lead by Gail Lee and started in LA and ended yesterday with a final class. \240 The Lee’s are disembarking in Singapore for 5 weeks and then they will join the newest viking ship in the Mediterranean for a series of talks and felting. \240There were gnomes, penguins and sheep along with others.
There are several types and sizes of felting needles. \240 The wool is so interesting. \240Here are some examples.
The talent of the students was superior. \240 I especially loved the elephant, penguins and the sheep, but all of it was so creative.
Olivia has turned into a little beggar. \240She and Dottie love to help Alane cook on hopes of eating a bite or something might fall to the floor. \240Each cat has their own chair. It’s a good thing the Asp’s have a large sofa and a couple other chairs in their great room, otherwise guests would have to sit on the floor as the cats have all the chairs.
There are so many public spaces on a viking ship where you can relax by yourself or with friends. \240These ladies were crafting in the Wintergarden and having a wonderful time. \240They were each doing something different, but found a common bond. \240
We ported in Singapore at noon today and we have two excursions. \240 The first is a driving tour of the city and the second is a night cruise on the river.
Singapore is very clean and very stringent about behavior and what is brought into the country. \240 Here is the list of items the cruise ship indicated we were absolutely not to bring onshore. \240This is an interesting list.
This evening we took a ride through town again and arrived at the boat platform. \240 We had a brief ride on the Singapore River to see the buildings from a different perspective and in different light.
On our drive through town from the cruise port there are many interesting buildings. \240 The Central Business Disyrict (CBD) is organized together and consists of msny skyscrapers. \240As the island is so small and compact the building is moving below ground in order to maximize space.
This is the Apple store
In years past the middle of all the street in China town and Little India had Hawker stands serving food. \240 Since I was here in 2017 the stands have all been moved to Hawker courts to improve sanitation and health of the facilities. We were so busy with all our tours that we didn’t get to go to a Hawker Court and enjoy the food.
This building was the prior police station and jail, now it is the Art Institude, hence the brightly painted windows in different colors.
On our walk across the Anderson Bridge to see the Merlion, a young couple were taking engagement pictures.
The revolving skyview of Singapore takes 32 minutes to circle and hold nearlyb700 people. \240 \240It is especially pretty at nights with the lights on that continually change colors.
We are still at least an hour from docking, but the harbor is very busy. \240There is some land off to the starboard side of the ship. \240 The weather is warm, in the high 80’s.
Not real sure what ear candling is but I didn’t try it.
There was a temple in Chinatown. \240 It is very old and beautiful inside.
Leaving the ship there were many signs warning you of tpsome of the rules of Singapore. \240 Everything was well marked and other than the long line in passport control each time ypu leave or enter everything went well.
After enjoying our drinks we returned to the ship fir well needed rest. \240 We have another long day tomorrow.
The Helix bridge during the day and at night. \240 It was very expensive to build as it is made of stainless steel.
Finally at the end of a very long day we arrive at the world renowned Raffles Hotel. \240 What a beautiful place. \240 There are no words to describe the opulent building and interior rooms. \240 \240We went to the third floor to the Long Bar and enjoyed a Singapore Sling cocktail. \240 The drink was invented by a bartender at Raffles. \240It was fun to share the drink with friends and enjoy the tradition of throwing peanut shells on the floor.
There is a tremendous amount of green space in Singapore. \240 There are parks and many trees throughout the city. \240
After the river ride we went to the Bugi’s market. \240 It was a rather strange market and really had nothing interesting to us, except they were selling durian juice. \240 None fir either of us thank you
Anderson Bridge
Singapore at night. \240The first picture is the Opera House, followed by Sand’s Marina Bay, another of the Opera House and several of the Merlion lit up for the evening.
Olivia got a new blue collar that matches her eyes. \240 She also found a new place to lay in the sun. \240 She is so happy, I’m not sure our house will satisfy her when she returns.
Jeff and mica at the entrance to Anderson Bridge.
Central Business District
From the balcony of Raffles, across the street I saw this bar. \240 \240It is right up my alley.
I passed this great bar on our way back from the river cruise. \240 It looked quite fun!
Merlion Park is a very popular place in Singapore for travelers and residents. \240
Supreme Court Building
As we are leaving Raffelsvwe run into Milos, the SOM from the Viking Neptune and his fiancé, Grace. \240 They are both wonderful people so we had to have a photo op with them
The new Supreme Court building.
This ride was seen from the river cruise platform. \240The swing is pulled back then let loose and it swings over the river. \240 \240This is not for me at all.
As we were leaving Bugi’s we saw the Cat Cafe. \240 Interesting, we think It might be a coffee house.
The Merlion, the national symbol of Singapore
We visited China Town and learned about shop houses, where the shop was on the first floor and the residence on the second floor. \240We toured a few streets and stores selling produce, clothing and other souvenirs, then had a local beer at a pub. \240 Tiger is the beer brewed in Singapore.
We are nearing port and the harbor is so busy. \240 It is much clearer now that the haze has cleared out.
Sand’s Bay Marina, 57 floors, the only casino in Singapore. \240The top floor is a pool and bar the 56th floor is an observation deck we are visiting day after tomorrow. This hotel is owned by the Sand’s Hotel in Las Vegas.
We have two excursions today. \240 One touring Singapore and the Ethnic neighborhoods including lunch. The second is the Night Safari at the zoo.
We started the day at 9:00 AM and headed for Arab Street and Kampong Glam. \240The smell of curry was prevalent as we got off the busses. \240We walked with our guide through the streets to the Sultan’s temple. \240It is unique in that it has an onion shaped dome. \240Again we saw many shop houses and businesses in the area. \240 I also encountered a chicken on the street.
We enjoyed the brief 10 minute light demonstration and then were off to the tram ride to see the animals
We returned to the ship about and I needed a little nap before we left for the Night Safari at the zoo.
The tram is a 30 minute ride through the park to see nocturnal animals. \240They were all out and easily photographed expect for the hippo. \240
I took several pictures of the fishing cat and it’s habitat. \240This is one of the Asian animals we maybe adding at our zoo.
There were numerous murals on the wall of buildings in the area. \240These murals signify the working class individual who lived in the area and the trades they performed.
. Another portion of the museum is the Story of the Forest. \240 This is a photographic emersive installation of 69 drawings that reflect flowers and trees. \240 It is very beautiful.
Following the museum we went to lunch. \240 A delicious 8 course meal mostly served family style on a large lazy susan in the center of the table. \240Several dishes were served in individual bowls including chili crab and shrimp fried rice. \240We enjoyed lunch at the Red House Seafood inside Grand Copthorne Hotel. \240Here are some pictures of the hotel lobby, our menu and courses of our lunch. \240Jeff and I enjoyed our usual -a beer. \240This time a Carlsburg. \240Yummy! \240 \240We enjoyed all the food except for the dumpling.
After the show we browsed the gift shop while waiting for the light demonstration to begin. \240 There were a number of cute stuffed animals in the shops.
Our friends Mary and Stephen
We toured some of the shops and as we were walking to the bus we saw a Chinese woman doing an Asian dance. \240 It was very interesting.
From Little India we went to the Singapore National Museum. \240This museum covered 700 years of Singapore history. \240Jeff and I were primarily interested in the history of Singapore and WWII. \240 It was a very nice museum and we enjoyed the experience
The drive to the zoo took about 40 minutes and when we arrived we went right in to the Creatures of the Night Show. \240 There were birds, finick fox, owls, otters and many other animals at the show. \240 It was entertaining and only lasted about 30 minutes.
After the tram ride with friends, Jeff and I walked the Fishing \240Cat trail one of three on the property. \240 It would be fun to come back and walk ll the trails. \240 We saw some of the animals really up close this way.
This house was built in Little India by a Chinese man who owned candy shops and he had it constructed in this area as it was near his manufacturing shop. \240 He built the house in honor of his wife.
Or last stop before returning to the ship was the gift shop at the Raffles hotel. \240 Since we were there last night we didn’t take a lot of pictures but we did browse around and i purchased a Raffles Hotel charm for my charm bracelets. \240The next we are in Singapore we plan to have dinner at Raffles at the Burger and Lobster Restaurant. \240 Sounds too good to be true.
After the trail we boarded the bus and headed back to the port. \240 We were all pretty tired as it was nearly 11 and we began at 8:30 this morning. \240 \240I had over 13,000 steps. \240
Today is our last day in Singapore, we didn’t get to do everything we wanted to do, but we certainly did a lot in 2 and 1/2 days. \240Today we have one tour of the Gardens by the Bay, a river cruise and then the Marina Bay Sands hotel and casino.
Convention center in the hotel
Opera House
Floating performance platform and stadium
Science Museum
Mica, Mary and Donna
Look at the number of boats in the harbor. \240 Some say there are over 1000 per day.

Today we port near Kuala Lumpur and the drive to the city is an hour to an hour and one half. \240 We are doing an excursion to a lake and the botanical gardens.
The cruiseport was very new and modern and there were two other ships in port with us. \240We disembarked and headed to the coach for our hour ride to the botanical garden. \240 The traffic can be fierce here but since it was Saturday it was not too bad. \240On the way from town we saw many palm trees used for production of palm oil. \240This is apparently a subject of great debate as the trees have replaced mangroves. \240
The metal mosque was not nearly as interesting as the rose mosque. \240This is why there are more pictures of it.
We returned to the ship and were happy it was a light and short day after 2 twelve hour days and another 6 hour day in Singapore. \240 Everyone is tired and we have 3 more port days after today.
On the way back to the ship I saw a number of disguised cell towers and interesting boat like things in the water.
Thee were numerous bridges many modeled after other famous bridges. \240One was fashioned after the Golden Gate Bridge, our group did not really think so. \240
We are having dinner with Jan and Pat and plan to make it an early evening. We had cocktails on the balcony and really enjoyed the sail out. \240 The view was spectacular during sail out this evening.
The botanical garden was rather disappointing for a couple reasons, we had no map ( our tour guide forgot to give them to us) and secondly we only had 45 minutes. \240We made the most of it and while we didn’t see the orchids we did see a number of nice flowers and a lovely arbor with swings inside. \240We did see one iguana, and in the pictures you will also.
Jeff and mica on the arbor swing
The metal mosque was not nearly as interesting as the rose mosque. \240This is why there are more pictures of it.
After the boat ride we drove to the hilltop convention center for a bird’s eye view of the city. \240 It is an entirely different perspective.
After the boat ride we drove to the hilltop convention center for a bird’s eye view of the city. \240 It is an entirely different perspective.
Thee were numerous bridges many modeled after other famous bridges. \240One was fashioned after the Golden Gate Bridge, our group did not really think so. \240
From the garden we went to the cruise dock to take a cruise of nearly one hour. \240 We were able to see the many bridges spanning the man made lake, as well as the many government buildings on the banks. \240There were also two mosques the metal mosque and the rose mosque. \240
Today is actually St Patrick’s Day in the US. \240 Mere and Ed sent us pictures of the corned beef dinner they shared with friends. \240 We are jealous as there was no corned beef served on the ship. \240 They also had deviled eggs.
Today is another port day 5th of 7 and then 3 sea days, we will need them to rest up. \240 We have a excursion to the mangroves and caves today. \240 Like every day of the past 5 we will take a boat ride during the excursion. \240Interesting after nearly 3 months out here and we select excursions not on land but water. Today was all about animals and water. \240 We saw monkeys, bats, eagles, and fish.
We boarded the tender for the 15 minute ride to the dock and boarded our colorful bus for the 45 minute ride to the jetty port. \240Along the way everything was green, but there were reall no astonishing sites except one mosque. \240 This island is 1/2 the size of Singapore and only had 50,000 people. \240 The island dies have several 5 star hotels including a Ritz Carlton and Foyr Seasons
Poser Monkey
Bats
Puffer fish unpuffed
Fast moving boat
Slow moving boat picture
We returned to the jetty dock and got refreshments and met the resident cat.
Spiny lobster
Puffed
Mangrove saplings
The park is a UNESCO heritage site and there are walking trails , many restaurants and other things to do at the location.
The restaurant
We took the 45 minute coach ride back to the tender dock and then decided to have a beer. \240Four beers were $6.00 far less than the $24.00 we paid for 2/beers in Singapore. \240 Friends joined us and we decided to stay for lunch.
Russ our Tucson neighbor
We arrived at the jetty and after potty breaks and admiring the monkeys which were cute and prevalent we boarded our jetty. The monkeys blend into the habitat and many times are challenging to see. \240Look carefully there are monkeys in every picture.
We returned to the ship to rest up and get ready for night time activities. \240 We also have another port day tomorrow.
Olivia continues to do well, she naps, guards her toys from \240Dottie and has made up with Alane.
The toilet, bring your own tissue non is provided
We arrived at the Jetty and our first stop was the bat caves. \240Not the one Batman and Robin used. \240We were able to walk through and only had to crouch a couple of times. \240 There were bats stalagmites and stalactites in the cave.
Leaving the bat cave we encountered more monkeys. \240 This guy photo bombed us.
We also learned how the mangrove forest grows. \240 Here is a picture of the forest and \240saplings
Joanne and Ted, Bali snorkel buddies
Carlsberg, beer of the day
Walking to the tender there was a hotel with a pool. \240 It has an infinity edge and chairs in the water and an observation deck to watch the pier. \240 There was this sign posted at the pool.
We continued on to an area where there were sea eagles and Brown Kites (not the kind you fly). \240These diving birds swoop in the water grab fish and they have a meal. \240 Interesting the kites can fly and eat at the same time. \240 Jeff was able to get some excellent pictures.
Today was exceptional and we are so blessed and excited to be able to do this voyage. \240
Mangrove forest
We learned that the monkeys eat crabs that are living near the cave. \240 These crabs are very small and have one large pincher and one small one. \240 If the crabs engage in a fight for dominance they lock large pinchers then the winner breaks off the pincher of the loser. \240 Never fear all is not lost in a week or so the small pincher grows large and a new small pincher grows where the lost pincher existed. \240 The crabs are not pincherless. \240I neglected to note these crabs are very small, only about an inch in size.
We reboarded the jetty and donned life jackets for the next journey to a cave known as the rock-o-dile. \240None of our group thought it looked like a crocodile, but to each his own. \240In low tide the boats can go all the way through the cave, but not this morning as it is high tide.
Our boat picked up speed on the way to our next stop, a fish farm turned restaurant. \240 They raise the fish and if you like you can pick out your own fish from the farm. \240Most of the fish at the farm are display only as a demonstration of local fish that can be served. \240We did see grouper, barracuda, spiny lobster, sting rays and many others. \240This bring the concept of fish farm to table to a whole new meaning.
Today we have a long excursion, we are traveling 2 hours each way to a orangutan sanctuary. \240 We are excited about this trip. \240 Again we will take a coach and then a small boat to the Island sanctuary. This is day 5 of our coach and then small boat excursions.
We departed the ship and walked to the coach. \240This is a cruise ship and commercial port. Penang also is a palm oil exporter and they also have a vast number of large manufacturers producing computer chips and other IT components. \240The skyline is very modern, but there are many local family businesses.
The cage we walked through
Mica, Erik and and Bridget. \240
One of our friends had the opportunity to get pictures inside the cage and through the fence. \240 These are the same orangutans pictured between the fencing. \240Much improved
We returned to the jetty port and the coach to return to the ship. \240 The drive was a little over one hour. \240We stopped on the return trip to take pictures of the Penang Bridge which is 14 miles long. \240 The day is really hazy so really clear pictures were difficult. \240 We also took some pictures of the skyline.
There was art along the harbor as well.
There were a number of ethnic building on the return that were very interesting. \240We also passed Fort Cromwell, nthe cannons are still present in the walls.
Our kids and granddaughter spent part of last week, over spring break at our house. \240Bells always leaves a note on the whiteboard in our garage. \240 We were thrilled she left us a note.
Once on the island we immediately saw some monkeys and started our trail walk to see the orangutans. \240There was some information on the animals life span etc displayed for information.
We were a little disappointed the orangutans weren’t roaming free, we walked in a cage and they were fenced in individual areas along the cage. \240Most times it was challenging to photograph the orangutans through the cage and the fencing. \240 We did manage to get several pictures.
The sanctuary has a breeding program and has successfully breed the orangutans. \240The foundation has a nursery and hospital used to treat abandoned or sick animals. \240 None were needing treatment at this time.
We arrived at the jetty for the boat ride to the island sanctuary. \240The ride was uneventful. \240 This jetty dock is the gateway for an amusement park, hotels, the sanctuary and some restaurants. \240We had Donna with us her husband did another excursion. \240 We took our picture with a fake orangutan. \240
Interesting in the harbor where we stopped there was a defibrillator that could be used in an emergency. \240 This is the first time we have seen this.
Near the hospital a few orangutans were out enjoying ropes and ladders. \240 We were able to photograph these animals easily. \240Many guests were throwing apples to the orangutans who would catch them and eat and nibble. \240
We are having dinner with Mary and Stephen at Manfredi’s private oom tonight. \240 I’m sure we will play Left, Right, Center. \240It will be fun! No LRC as things didn’t work out. \240 After dinner the ship had a Johnny Cash tribute singer onboard, Daniel Thompson. \240He was good, but not Johnny!
Today our last of 7 straight port days before 3 sea days we are going to a beach location with swimming and \240coral reefs. \240 We need this after the last 6 days of intense overload of mosques, animals, temples and markets. We are going with our snorkel buddies Joanne and Ted as well as Mary and \240Stephen. \240It will be a fun day. \240I’m \240wearing 50 sunblock after my scorching in Bali.
So we anchor near the island, this is a tender port. \240 It’s a day filled with multiple transportation methods. \240 First a island run tender, a long walk to the coach for a 30 minute ride, then a 20 minute speedboat ride to the island, then a 10 minute boat ride to the snorkeling location and back. \240 The reverse is done with the addition of a keep ride to the coach from the boat as it is now low tide and we are carted back to the coach parking lot. \240 So in summary: tender, walk, coach, speedboat, another boat, speedboat, Jeep, coach, walk, tender and back on the boat. \240 It was a fabulous day!
We arrived on the island and walked to the coach, there were many bars, massage and manicure places etc.
This floating water bottled ramp from the boats was like walking on waves. \240It was a challenge to keep your balance and not fall into the ocean.
Mystery drinks ef returned with when he went for beer

A seafood restaurant, the live fish are on the street in front of the restaurant. \240New meaning to pick your dinner.
Being the daughter of an electrician I have heard the words,” this is a fire hazard” more times than I can count. \240 Looking at the wires along the stores on the road to the boat would make any electrician have a breakdown
This area is also scooterville again. \240Not as bad as Saigon, but still a large number. \240They also add things to the side for use as a restaurant or to haul items.
Tonight is tomahawk steak night on the pool deck. \240 We are going to meet Mary and Stephen as well as Ted and Joanne for dinner. \240 It was a great day and promises to be a wonderful evening.
The band was playing on the pool deck and we had a wonderful time. Some members of the band did a singing Congo line through the restaurant. \240On the ocean tonight we can see green lights from squib lights.
Post snorkeling
We returned in time for lunch which was a Thai buffet and of course beer. \240 The food was tasty.
The giant budda on the hill is over 150 feet tall. \240Below are several pictures and a couple are close up so you can see the detail. \240 The budda is visible from all over the harbor. \240 The first picture was taken from our boat.
We boarded the boat and returned to the dock to board our coach. \240 A new twist, we were picked up in this pink Jeep to take us to the coach as it is now low tide.
This is a taxi
We arrived at the island and got settled in our chairs then were called to board the snorkeling boat. \240A brief 10 minute ride and we were dinning snorkels and fins and slipping into the water. \240I had the go pro so we will post those pictures later.
Newest beach look????
We get on the snorkel boat and life jackets are required so…. \240There was a giant budda on the hill as we leave the cruise port. \240We arrive at the snorkel site, the water is calm and pretty clear. \240 I hope that I got some great pictures. \240 There was lots to do on the island, swimming, parasailing, diving and of course eating and drinking.
Here are the Go Pro pictures. \240 Jeff was able to move them over. \240 Some ar better than others and they don’t even begin to display the true beauty.
Jeff and I swam for awhile and enjoyed a margarita in the ocean and then it was time to go. \240 Before e left we took some pictures to remember the day
On the drive to the speedboat there were a number of unique buildings and some art. \240 There were markets, restaurants, and hotels.
Today is \240the 3 month mark of the trip. \240 I can’t believe we have been out here 90 days, the time has flown by.
This is our first sea day of 3 then we port in Colombo Sri Lanka. \240 As usual we are busy, Jeff is working on my Go pro pictures from snorkeling and I have art class. \240 We then hop off to trivia and Italian Wine Tasting.
This morning Jeff was up early and caught sunrise. \240 It is stunning.
I went to art class, the new instructor, Christine and her husband the assistant are on the ship until London. \240 That is nearly 6 weeks so I should have ample opportunity to learn some new watercolor techniques. \240 Here is my work for today. \240
Off to Italian Red wine tasting. \240 The wines were good especially the Amarone
Here are pictures of all the courses except the second course. \240I was so excited I forgot. \240 My bad as it was the best
Olivia is doing so well. I hope when we get home she stil recognizes us and wants to come home.
Gregg dropped by this morning with a gift. \240 I guess I have said too many times how much I miss Olivia. \240 Hence Olivia II
Tonight we are having dinner with Jan and Gregg at the Chef’s Table. \240 This is a 5 course menu paired with wins. \240Here is the menu for tonight. \240I think after dinner it will be a quiet night after the last 7 port days.
We went to trivia and before it started a pod of dolphins swam by the ship. \240 We didn’t fare as well in trivia as we hoped, but we had fun!
This is our last sea day before 3 days in Sri Lanka. \240We have the usual art class and \240trivia and dinner at Manfredi’s, probably followed by dancing at Torshaven.
My art project is making progress. \240 The class is enjoyable and today we learned how to paint palm trees. They are a must for beach scenes. \240 Below is the picture we painted and my rendition. \240 I think I got the balance a little off, but I’m learning, but I really like my palm trees
We almost won trivia, just a few answers short. \240 On the pool deck it was sandwich station day. \240 Lots of sandwiches including egg, chicken and tuna salad, roast beef, ham and turkey. \240 Yummy.
We are having dinner with Gregg and Jan at Manfredi’s before they leave for a overnight safari in Sri Lanka. \240
This is our second sea day and we are busy with the usual things. \240 I have art class, we have trivia and this evening we have a Tequila Mixology class.
Olivia is still enjoying her stay with the Asp’s. \240Alane says that Dottie will actually miss her when she returns home. \240I’m not sure of that, but we will see. \240Here she is lying in her hammock bird watching and relaxing on the back of the sofa. \240 \240She has this look of I own this place.
Milos our lead mixer
Mara and Ray
We started the tasting with orange/ cinnamon slices and tequila. \240 This was a warm up.
Mara and Susan mixed the tequila sunrise.
Spicy Margarita, the bar used pepper infused tequila, it was tasty
The siesta. \240Our least favorite drink of the night
We had dinner after the tasting. There were so many choices, but we had wedge salad, onion soup and lobster risotto. \240 Ray and I shared an soufflé. \240 Then all four of us were done for the night. \240 One more sea day then porting in \240 \240Colombo.
The project today was a girl on a bike eating ice cream. \240I had a hard time with the ice cream cone so I decided my girl was lactose intolerant and therefore no ice cream. \240 Simply solved. \240 Below is the painting by the artist and mine.
We are having dinner with Ray and Mara after mixology, probably late dinner and drinks and dancing at Torshaven. \240 We will see. \240 We are trying to rest up for the next round of port days.
Here are the mixology pictures, it was fun.
Today in art class we learned to draw bodies from stick people. \240This makes the process look so easy. \240She started with a stick man and then divided into triangles to form the body. \240 Chris used bowling pins to make arms and legs. \240Seems simple. When I try it we will see.
Lunch today is giant pizza pie! \240 We probably won’t eat any, but it sure is fun to see the chefs creations.
Today we port in Sri Lanka for 3 days. \240 We don’t have a lot of planned excursions as many require a 2-4 hour drive in small passenger vans. \240We are going to take the shuttle bus into town center tomorrow. \240 Our plan is to have lunch and find internet that will allow ,e to sync our journo and Jeff is computer. \240 The internet on the ship had been poor since Singapore.
Olivia continues to love bird watching in the windows at the Asp home. \240 She has many more opportunities for bird watching at their house than ours. \240 I’m glad she is happy, but I hope when she comes home she is not disappointed as we don’t have windows near trees, or windows that have sills.
The mall train , I wanted to ride but it didn’t stop near us. \240 Of course Jeff didn’t want anything to do with it.
You have to love any store named Mimosa
There was a beautiful store selling Sri Lankian ladies fashions as well as 50 or so ladies clothing stores.
Wow how old could this beauty be?
Just a few there was also Rado, Cartier and many others.
The Sri Lanka port is very commercial and from the balcony we can see the sky line. \240 Interesting you are not permitted to walk from the ship to the cruise port. \240There are shuttle buses one to take you to the cruise port and another to drop you had the city center. \240 This is the second time this has occurred during the trip. \240 I’m not sure why this is done.
We roamed the mall looking for high speed internet to sync pictures, a new iphone case for Jeff and a portable fan for me. \240 We found 2 of 3. \240 No high speed internet was to be found. \240
We took the shuttle bus to the first stop which was the Galle Mall. \240It was 7 stories of shopping, many name brands and others. \240 When we first walked in after our security screening there was every high end watch shop you could ever want. \240There was also local art.
Olivia looks lovely in her blue collar, it matches her eyes.
Steve makes a nest in a bedroom chair for Olivia to sleep in at night since Dottie will not allow her on the bed. \240At least now that she has been there 3 months Dottie doesn’t lay at the bedroom door and guard it to keep her out. \240You can see her brow in her comforter next. \240
On the street, for the first time we saw a man with a snake and also he had a monkey with him. \240 He played music for the snake.
We left the first stop and reboarded the bus to go to the city center still looking for internet. \240Alas no internet, but we meet up with Stephen and Mary and decide to take Tuk Tuks back to the ship rather than wait from the bus. \240 These are interesting little cars and we managed to get back to the ship without injury. \240 There were several sites along the way. \240 I’m sure when we do our tuk tuk city tour tomorrow there will be a,by more pictures.
We returned to the cruise port and their was the cutest currency exchange. \240 There were also all kinds of shops selling a variety of merchandise.
We don’t have plans this evening, probably dinner at the restaurant and then Torshaven. \240 Who knows. \240 Well met Erik and Bierkett at the resturant and had a wonderful diner of oysters and prime rib. \240 We went to Torshaven for an hour or so and the retired to our balcony. \240 The night sky is cool
We had lunch at the British Pub, fish and chips and of course beers. \240We had the Carlsberg and the local Lion beer.
We are in Sri Lanka again today. \240 We have a 4 hour city tour on a tuk tuk this morning.
On our travels we passed the home of the Sri Lanka Air Force.
The concert hall in Columbo was very pretty and seemed to be very new.
Most people in the US recognize the name Singer. \240The company is well represented in Columbo. \240In addition to sewing machines they are rather like a Best Buy in the states selling major appliances, small kitchen appliances and other devices.
We had dinner at the restaurant and then met up with Mara and Ray. \240 Great fun a Torshaven.
Ou
Look at the detail on this car being. \240It was very very tall
We arrived at our tuk tuk, there were 50 of them all lined up ready for our tours. \240 We were in number 22, our driver had a name w couldn’t say so I asked if I could address him as Sir. \240 He seemed pkease with that. \240 Here is our driver and the line up of tuk tuks
Today is a rather sad night, our cabin Steward, Caroline and her assistant Slamm are going home tomorrow. \240 They have been superb and we will miss them. \240 They have been with us since early January. \240 Both have families and children and are anxious to get home. We are happy for them, but still a little sad.
Jeff took pictures of the telecommunications tower tonight. \240 It changes colors every few seconds. \240 Here is a collage of the colors. \240Cool!
These pictures are in the base of the building above
We stopped at the monument dedicated to the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. The building was very old yet well, preserved. \240 At the site I met two young women sketching. \240 They indicated they were part of a group that meets one time pe month to sketch historic sites. \240They were very nice and allowed me to photograph them and their work.
We left the port on a bus our viking host giving us an overview of some of the more important buildings, mosques, statues and parks. \240 There is a tremendous amount of green space, lovely art, mosques and other architectural wonders. On the way to meet our tuk tuk we took some pictures of the city
We walked through the largest park in Columbo. \240There were many paths and benches as well as trees we were not familiar with. \240At the entrance to the park there was a man with a snake again today. \240 Another man was walking around with the snake wrapped around him. \240
Of course there were buddas and temples all over the city. \240They were in a multitude of sizes and we enjoyed getting to see them.
There were a number of churches and fountains as well as very interesting art throughout the city. \240 We toured the city for nearly 3 hours in our tuk tuk.
Our delightful neighbor Bonnie sent pictures of our peach tree in the backyard. \240Spring has sprung and it is blooming. \240 I always love to see it bloom. Better yet I love the peaches in August!
Today is our final day in Columbo. \240 We were able to talk to our kids and granddaughter this morning before we left for our excursion. \240 Bells softball team has had some changes and this week the team has been reformed with a new coach and renamed. Team Hustle. \240 We hope the experience is improved over the old team.
Our excursion today is to a tea farm. \240We weren’t sure we were going to go, but we are sure glad we did! \240The drive to the plantation and factory was 2 hours each way, but there were many things to look at.
Managers bungalow
There were about 7 plus little towns/villages along the way and there were numerous markets. There were also wild water buffalo along the road.
Tush our guide. \240 He did a super job!
Traffic signs have 3 languages including English.
After the tea tasting we drove to the manufacturing plant. Along the way we learned that the plantation produces not only tea but, palm oil and rubber. The sign below denotes the size of each part of the plantation. We saw men in the field tapping rubber trees and they showed us the process and the tool used.
On the return trip we passed the new Parliment building.
Mosque at the entrance to the road leading up to the tea plantation.
While our driver was off the bus trying to determine what is going on I moved to the front of our bus to get a picture of the situation. \240 Well in the seat there was the Viking lollipop so I took my picture with it. \240 One of our fellow passengers photo bombed me. \240It was fun!
On the very narrow road leaving the tea plantation we had a adventure. \240A tractor pulling a load of logs was too close to the edge and the wagon went off the side, blocking the road. \240We arrived and there were many men there trying to decide what to do. \240Ultimately they started tossing out the logs and tried to reduce the weight in order to pull the wagon out. \240 This didn’t work, the first or second time so our guide ordered a backup bus. \240When this backup bus arrived we walked 100 yards and boarded. \240Unfortunately he could not turn around and was considering backing everal miles to a place wide enough to turn. \240 \240Just as we started backing the group was able to get the tractor and wagon out, so we walked back to our first bus and safely returned to the harbor. \240 It will be a long day for those men retrieving the logs from over the side of the hill. \240In feel really bad for them.
Here are some pictures of the tea plants and we were also able to experience ladies picking the tea. \240They only pick the bloom and young leaves which are very soft. \240 The bushes are kept at a height of about 3 feet for ease of picking.
They finally got the tractor back on the road. \240We were waylayed about 45 minutes, but it could have been much longer.
We arrived at the factory and were met by ladies who gave us tea leave lays. We toured the production plant. \240This is a very manual process supported by machines, but a great deal of human labor. \240The production process from picking, crushing, rolling, shifting, drying and packaging was explained to us. \240 The plant was very hot.
You must walk in water to clean your shoes before entering the plant.
We returned to the ship in time for the afternoon port talk. \240 As we didn’t have lunch we will have a early dinner. \240 Tomorrow is a sea day.
The sunset was so pretty tonight. \240 I went outside from dinner and took a couple pictures. \240 We had dinner with the Story’s who also did the tea excursion on a different bus. \240 We had such a awesome day and our guide and driver were superior. \240 They had the opposite experience, the guide did not speak good English and the driver got lost 5 times and even took them to a Seaborne ship. \240 So sad
Sri Lanka and Columbo feels safe. \240This is idea \240is supported by the abundance of police and most have very large riffles and brass knuckles. \240 They all dress in brown uniforms and stand out.
The flowers on the bungalow property were beautiful. \240I didn’t know the names of \240many of them, but they were varied and beautiful. \240 We also saw a Blue Kingfisher bird.
I met Benji the resident \240tea dog and Boris the cat. \240 Both were very friendly.
We saw school children leaving school. \240 They all wear uniforms, the girls white dresses with ties and the boys white shirts and slacks. \240Everyone is very friendly.
There were many buddas and temples as well as art along the route. \240Here are a few
There were many coconut trees along the route. \240 Our driver Tush, explained that it is said there are 1001 things to do with coconut, using each part.
We arrived first at the managers bungalow for tea and cake on the lawn. \240The landscape was beautiful with abundant flowers. \240The tea was served on mismatched cups and saucers \240and we we able to sit in chairs on the lawn. We were able to purchase tea also. We were greeted by the plantation GM and his family.
Today is a sea day before we port in Cochin, India. \240I have art class, we are painting an Indian beach. \240 Then we have trivia and my plans are to paint in the afternoon.
Also after the 3 hectic days in Colombo we both need a little break. We met our new Cabin Steward and his Assistant today. \240 Vito is assisted by Fe, they have very large shoes to fill after the great care of Caroline and Slamm.
Art class was fun. \240We painted an Indian beach. \240Below is the artist example and my work. \240 We learned how to keep white on a painting with various mediums. \240Today we used wax(a candle) on the painting and then the paint doesn’t stick. \240 \240This was used along the sand water line and the rock in the water. \240 We also used acrylic to highlight the white along the sand/ water line. \240We applied it with the edge of our ship key card. \240Imagine that, \240The wax was easier than the acrylic.
My rendition. \240 I think I’m improving a little especially with palm trees
We were second in trivia, but we had a great time. \240 After lunch I painted another picture of an Indian beach. \240 My palm trees have improved bit I’m still struggling with my shadows.
It has been chilly in Tucson, Olivia is still doing well. \240Our friend Steve Asp would like her to be a little friendlier. \240 He had hoped she would join him on the sofa at night, but mostly that doesn’t happen except occasionally.
Olivia always enjoyed a vigorous scratch.
We are having dinner tonight at Manfredi’s with Ray and Mara, that will be fun. \240 Tomorrow we are doing the included tour of Cochin tomorrow.
Today we docked in Cochin, India, which is really a man made island. \240 As is typical in India the city is old and rather dirty. \240We are going to a small palace that is now a museum, then a synagogue, a.catholic church and finally to see the Chinese fishing nets. Here is a description ofgthe excursion.
The port is very commercial. But we did get a good view of the shyline from out balcony
Sample of wall painting
Entrance door to museum, hand painted
Here is the menu tonight and a picture of each of the of the 5 courses.
The wooden ceiling of the museum
When we left the palace we walked to the synagogue which was nearby. \240 We entered what is named JewTown per the sign below. \240 There were many shops some just tent booths with items to buy and others were retail shops with stone, carvings, antiques or artifacts. \240The locals tried very hard to sell you something. \240I also saw the resident cat.
We arrived at the synagogue and it was very small. \240
We strolled through a park, with two resident cows, saw the oldest hotel in Cochin established in 1788. \240There were also some of the biggest banyan trees we have ever seen. \240We also noted some local school girls in uniform.
We had lunch with Ray and Mara afterward. \240
We really didn’t see anything beautiful or that memorable on the excursion. \240The people are friendly, there are numerous bake shops and markets as you would expect.
Sail out tonight. Several views view of the skyline, a beach \240and a photo of the Chinese fishing nets from the harbor.
We started the morning on a short drive to the palace, which is now a museum. \240 The most famous thing about the palace is the wall paintings and a few items of antique furniture. \240The walls reflected a story of ancient era and battles in the settling of Cochin. \240We were not permitted to photograph the walls, but I got one picture from another room. \240 The wood in the \240ceiling and floors was extraordinary.
We then returned to the bus and went to the first angelic church in India. \240The church was lovely and in the courtyard there was a statue to commemorate WWI service men. The ancient tile floor was beautiful and to visit inside shoes had to be removed.
From here several of us had to use the ladies room. \240 For the first time I bit the bullet and used the toilet hole. \240 It was discussing and smelly.
On our way back to the bus we passed the fish market. \240The smell was very unpleasant and in the high heat and humidity it would be very challenging to eat any of these fish laying in plastic bowls on the ground with no ice.
We returned to ship, made it back through immigration without incident. \240When we approached the ship staff were out front to greet us as was a local group of drummers.
Inside the ship we were greeted by lovely Indian ladies, cocktails and samples of Indian dishes. \240 The ship had also arranged a native dance to be performed.
Olivia is very happy and continues to add joy to the Asp household. She loves to play with is purpke feather and sit on the cat condo shelf in the sun. \240 She is so spoiled.
This cat was the tidiest part of the toilet trip
After this adventure we walked a small distance to see the Chinese fishing nets. \240 These were the high point of the excursion in our book. \240 The nets are on a lever and the weight pulls them down into the water, then they are raised with ropes, the fish scooped out and the process begins again,
We had dinner at the Chef’s Table tonight with Rick and Mary. \240 They also live in Tucson.
Our chef for tonight.
Tomorrow is a sea day so I have art class and we have trivia. \240 We port in Goa on Friday.
Day 100!!! \240 That’s right we have been out here 100 days today. \240It feels rather like yesterday, this is certainly the fastest I’ve ever experienced time going by.
Today is a sea day and tomorrow we port in Goa and then the day after in Mumbai for 3 days. Some passengers are taking an overland trip to the Taj Mahal, however it is a private excursion, not sponsored by Viking and we are not going. \240 Jeff is not comfortable flying in India and having everything run on time to get back to the ship, thus we are doing other things in Goa and Mumbai.
I have art class and we have trivia. \240 Chris showed us how to use five simple shapes and make them into an elephant and also how to position the animal on the page. \240 Here is her illustration and my project for today. \240We painted an elephant drinking. \240 Also included is the artists rendering. My elephant still needs some work.
At lunch it was kabobs on the pool deck. \240 They had a large variety including lamb, beef, cheicken and shrimp with assorted veggies and slaw. \240 It was very colorful.
Steve and Alain said Olivia sometimes get impatient for dinner. \240With their busy schedule they might feed her at 3 one day and 7 the next. \240 She really likes dinner at 5 which is when we feed her at home. \240 This is just before cocktail hour. \240 She has to eat on a dresser at the Asp’s as Dottie has decided she likes Olivia’s food.
This afternoon Jeff is writing and I am reading and painting. \240 Tomorrow we port in Goa. \240It is our first time in this location.
We had dinner tonight with Stephen and Mary. \240 Fun night then we had after dinner drink’s with Micha and his wife Gabriela. \240 He is in guest services and she is a viking spa supervisor. \240 We had a great time.
We post in Goa tomorrow and we are going to the beach, which they are famous for. \240 Let’s see if that is true.
We ported in Goa at 7 this morning. \240 The harbor is pretty. \240 We are only here one day then off to Mumbai. \240 We are going to a 5 star resort to sun and swim. \240A break from churches, castles, palaces and cathedrals. \240 Oh my!
There are Indian coast guard ships and the submarine docked right by our ship. There is a lot of activity this evening as we are getting ready to leave port.
Waterfall restaurant
On the drive we saw many interesting things including about 40 churches, a few temples, of course roadside produce stands.
These two escaped harm from the bus!
There were pots with flowers floating in the corridors of the hotel.
Ray and Mara
There was a welcome drink
India is an experience, in Cochin \240every passenger and crew had to meet face to face with an immigration representative and be photographed and finger printed in addition to the visa paperwork we had already done months ago. \240In Cochin they took our passports and they were returned to us the next day. \240Scary to be in a foreign country with no,passport.
Today we exit the ship and we are again interviewed by immigration and some of our friends were printed again. \240We now can board the bus and start our 45 minute drive to the hotel.
Here is a map of Goa, it is marked so you can see the cruise port and where we went to the beach. \240 There are 100’s of little coastal towns and each one has a beach named for it.
Sail out tonight. \240This is a cool sea wall. \240Jeff captured some wonderful pictures of the sunset
Today was the last day of school, the children out on break until June. \240The schools are required and each student wears a uniform. \240 Further every student learns 3 languages which are Hindi, English and one other language of their choice which might include French, Portuguese, Swedish etc.
We passed Shantytown as described by our guide. \240He indicated in recent years it was improving.
On the return trip we drove along the Arabian Sea. \240The water was beautiful. \240Here are some pictures taken from the bus.
Interesting there was a submarine outside our ship this morning and when we returned this afternoon it was docked near our ship. \240There are uniformed armed men everywhere throughout the port and the city as well as each small town. \240 They all have really big guns.
We port in Mumbai at noon today for 3 days. \240 We have a busy schedule with excursions. \240Today we visit the elephanta caves.
As we approach Mumbai we can see the skyline. \240 We are taking masks as the smog and air pollution are very heavy. \240Many sea gulls trailed the ship as we stirred up a late breakfast or early lunch for them.
Many of the booths were selling food and also a drink made from sugar cane syrup. Here are pictures of the machine that crushes the sugar cane and releases the liquid.
The skyline in the distance
We are porting and the harbor is very busy.
Th
Mumbai at night. \240 Here is the Gateway and the Taj Mahal Hotel
The jetty dock is near the Gateway to Mumbai which overlooks the harbor.
Taj Mahal Hotel. \240One of the oldest in the city.
Some of the Taj Mahal Hotel
We boarded our boat for the 45 minute ride to Elephanta Island. \240 We saw the crude oil docks where ships dock to unload crude oil through pipelines t the refinery. \240We saw the new container. Raise port as well as new bridge which is slated to open late this year and will connect the new airport to the city.
Our guide walked through the cave and explained each panel to use. \240 Jeff took wonderful pictures. \240 There were also some monkeys outside the cave. \240
We did the reverse trip, train to the jetty, boat ride back to the dock and then return drive to the ship. \240 We left at 1:00 PM and returned at 7:30. \240It was a long day. \240Here is sunset from the boat. \240 We ordered room service so we could watch the Indian dancers.
Our second day in Mumbai, we have no internet on th ship. Everyone is grumbling. \240 Jeff suggested this was due to docking beside the Indian navy and possibly it was jammed. \240 Who knows.
Gandhi stamps from around the world.
We leave tomorrow at 2. \240 We had hoped to have drink at the Harbor Bar at the Taj Mahal Hotel, but they don’t open until 3 PM. \240 Bummer!
Train ticket office
Our last stop was at the Prince of Wales museum. \240 The building is beautiful with 3 onion domes and marble floors an walls. \240There are 3 floors with specific artifacts on each floor.
We had an excursion planned for this morning and also we had hoped to swing by the Taj Mahal Hotel ro snap a few pictures and have a cocktail. \240Unfortunately I am under the weather. \240 The first time in over 100 days and I am sneezing, coughing, nose running and generally feel miserable. \240 Jeff didnt want to go alone so we didn’t do anything
We left Mumbai at 2:30 this afternoon, and now we have 5 sea days until we get to Saudi Arabia. Amazing no internet the entire tim we were docked in Mumbai and as soon as we left the harbor the internet magically returned. \240 \240Jeff thought the Indian Navy, which uses the harbor extensively jammed our internet. \240 Who knows, but it sure is strange we had no internet while docked and now we do.
We are cruising the Arabian Sea. \240 Goodbye India.
For the first time Jeff is homesick. \240 He has been to the gym and also is walking on the deck. \240 I’m sure he will work through it. \240Below is a picture of Jeff waving goodbye to India, it has never been one of his favorite places and this visit didn’t improve his opinion. \240 I must admit though Mumbai was much cleaner than Cochin which was a relief.
I saw this flamingo in the window of a store yesterday from the bus.
Even though we did not get to go to the Taj Mahal Hotel, friends did. \240 Over the top and WOW are all I can say. \240 \240It would have been a over the top experience.
We got some new pictures of Olivia. \240She and Dottie spar bu mostly playing. \240Since we had no internet and limited phone service while in Mumbai we didn’t get to talk to the Asp’s or Olivia.
Early dinner at the restaurant and I’m going to bed to get some rest. \240 There is a busy day tomorrow, art class, trivia and an African wine tasting. \240 I need to feel better.
Alane sent me a picture of her favorite new solar light. \240 Anyone \240that knows me, knows of my love of flamingos.
Our first of 5 sea days before we port in Jeddah Easter Sunday. The ocean is calm and the temp is in the low 80’s.
I went to art class, this is the first project I’m very disappointed in. The people were challenging to paint and I ended up taking the one in front of the picture out and added more waves. \240 It is amazing how forgiving water colors are. \240Here is the artists work and mine, you won’t have any trouble telling which is which, but I tried. \240We learned how to make rolling waves with a piece of wax.
We talked to the kids today. \240 We are now 12 hours apart, but it is still challenging to communicate sometimes with their schedules and ours. \240 We are sooooo busy. \240
Dinner tonight with Jan and Gregg as well as Russ and Jan. \240 I know it will be fun.
We are off to trivia and then to a African Wine tasting. \240Bummer we missed winning by one point and we had the answer and \240changed it. \240 Next time, we are determined to wine.
Wine tasting was great, South African wines and our newest bartender actually worked for one of the wineries in his prior life. \240Best of show was the last wine which was a Cabernet Sauvignon, cab franc and merlot blend. \240 \240Great fun!
Olivia had a very charged up morning and ran all over the house. \240She then had to take a rest \240in her favorite barrel chair. Doesn’t she look like she owns this chair?
Second sea day. \240 I have art class, we have trivia, some girl \240friends are gathering for pictures and cocktails, then late afternoon we are going to ballroom dance class. \240 The class features the tango. \240 This should be fun! \240Sea days are so busy
Viking sent a letter to our cabin tonight indicating securing measures they are taking as we prepare to sail the Golf of Aden. \240 No cruise ships have been attacked in recent years but safety first. \240 Viking is placing razor wire on deck 2 and armed guards will be present. \240 I guess this is like the times Jeff traveled to places with high security risk and HP always had a armed guard, a driver and an interpreter with him.
Here are some examples of our instructors work and a watercolor instructional site she shared with us.
We are having Brigit and Erik up for cocktails and the. We are going to dinner, \240 It is fun to entertain in the cabin.
The wire is being put on deck 2 and word is that the armed guards are on board. \240(6-8 men). When I researched the whole pirate thing it seems the last time pirates tried to board and take control of a ship, was an Oceania ship in 2008. \240 This still seems scary to me. \240 Better to be safe than sorry and take precautions. \240 I’m sure word spreads among the pirates which ships have wire and armed guards.
I met Mary,Barb and Donna in the Wintergarden for Vietnam hat pictures. \240Since I didn’t buy a hat we traded off then we took pictures of most in my bucket hat. \240We posed and took stupid pictures of each other. \240We had a blast and 2 bottles of champagne later we shared some time together in the living room relaxing. \240Tomorrow we are going to the onboard jewelry store. \240 Word isn’t here is a very very expensive piece of jewelry we can try on. \240 That will be fun.
Yours truly
Jeff said as many people who walk on deck 2 and as many people who have fallen it will just be a matter of time before someone falls into the razor wire. \240 We will see.
The moon tonight was beautiful!!!!
Mary
Art class was neat. \240 We learned about types of art paper and I worked to touch up my last two pictures. \240 I shaded the elephant a little more and I worked on shading my boat in yesterdays work so it didn’t look like it was sinking. \240There was minor success.
Trivia we thought today was our day. \240We even scheduled a victory team \240dinner for the 9th. \240 But alas we were tied for second again. \240Our victory dinner might be a runner up dinner, either way it will be fun!
Jeff is all excited at noon today the culinary staff is making taco chili cheese fries. \240Personally I don’t think this is a culinary experience, but apparently Jeff thinks so and he is very excited. \240We ended up having taco salads and the chef also roasted a pig. (Vegetarians do not look at the picture) The desserts looked wonderful today, but I still had my usual s op of chocolate ice cream.

Here is my work, hydrangeas. \240When we lived in Ohio we had three beautiful hydrangeas in our yard. \240 \240I still miss them. \240This work will glue to a card for spring.
Ok folks the tango is hard, very hard. \240 We managed to get through the steps but it is damn hard. \240 Plus Jeff install with long legs and size 14 feet. \240 We made it but I would give our ability a D- \240 \240We might practice in the cabin. \240 Here are Ray and Mara and our instructors Michael and Mara doing a great tango. \240 Jeff and Mica not so much
Sea day 3 of 5. \240The sea is calm. The razor wire and guards are in place and everything is great. \240I have art class and Jeff is working on his book. \240 We have trivia and after Jeff and I are going to the sports deck to putt. \240Tonight’s dinner is grilled lobster on the pool deck and after dancing under the stars. \240 We both love dancing under the stars evenings!
Art class was fun we painted a shark in the water with coral and learned how to use a toothpick to pull color out in thin lines. \240We have now learned and used 7 different techniques. \240 Today once again we used wax and salt to create some of the surface texture. \240 Here is Christine’s rendering and my work.
The armed guards are posted on decks 2 and 3 and the Captain announced there were also friendly weaponed ships nearby in the water and guests would see them frequently.

Here are pictures with friends during the evening. \240 \240What a great time!

Hey I’m so sweet and innocent! \240 LOL
Another neighbor Mary is taking care of my orchids. \240Frankly she wasn’t keen on doing this, because she said she didn’t have good luck with them. \240 Recently she sent me what she called “proof of life” \240Haha, the orchids are thriving. \240 Thanks Mary

It is not possible to take a trip like this without the help of many others. \240 You must make arrangements for others to care for many of your personal things. \240Our delightful neighbor Bonnie visits our house and checks to make sure it is ok. She is such a kind and generous person.
Of course Alane and Steve have stepped up big time as they have Olivia to care for. She is a handful all by herself, but so cute and fun. Olivia send the Asp’s a thank you present today.
Tonight was fun we were with many friends Donna ( her husband Rich was under the weather), Erik and Brigit, Ray and Mara, Barb, Ted and Maryand Stephen. \240 Great evening. \240The charcuterie board was yummy, the lobster and baked potato as well as the cake, ice cream and sauces was yummy! \240 Best of all it was served under the stars and all of the performers on the ship did some numbers. \240 It was great! \240 Here they are:
Before trivia there was a large pod of sperm whales beside the ship. \240 The sea is so calm and they were blowing water. \240My picture didn’t really capture any of them.

We reach the Gulf of Aden late afternoon/ evening. \240Viking has made us feel very safe with the measures taken thus far. \240 They also indicate there are additional things being done behind the scenes. \240Jeff and I chuckled as it’s dancing under the stars night . \240We wondered \240is this part of the secret security plan, have all the guests on the pool deck dancing to loud music to scare the pirates away?
Trivia was fun, just out of the winnng we still have 2 more days to win before our celebration dinner on Sunday. \240 Here’s routing for tomorrow!
Sunset tonight, Jeff capyited a great picture. \240 The moon is also full.
Today is our 4th sea day. \240 The ocean is calm, no pirate have been seen, so all is good. \240 The captain reminded us there are friendly war ships watching over the Neptune. \240 Ok!
Art class we learned how to draw a bird and a swan. \240 Just shapes put together and rounded out. \240 Chris makes it look so easy.
Here is the artists work and mine. \240 We used candle for the waves but I couldn’t see the wax and my waves were a little ovewaxed. \240 When I returned to my cabin I added some acrylic paint to the waves to tone them down.
We didn’t win trivia again. \240 Bummer. \240 We have one more chance tomorrow before our celebratory dinner. \240 We will see.
Jeff and I are off to tango less again. \240 We feel like remedial dancers. \240 \240I hope today goes better. \240We can do the first two step phases well, but then we get to the foot flick and things go way south. \240 We are going to practice. \240 Haha
Tonight near 6:30 we entered the most narrow and dangerous portion of the gulf. \240 We are in the strait and the distance from shore to shore is 15 miles. \240 We have Africa on one shore and Asia on the other. \240
We are having dinner with Laura and Paul to catch up on their trip to the Taj Mahal. \240Great dinner and after we went to the living room for after dinner drinks. \240 We met Kay and Ross, Mary and Stephen and Donna and Rich joined us. \240Great fun. \240 We have met so many wonderful people on this cruise. Here are the pictures.
Before.
Kay and Ross
After the acrylics
I also did some touchup on yesterdays work as well.
As we are waiting for trivia to start I decided to take a picture of the boys, AKA the four stooges. \240Gregg, Jeff, Ray and Erik. You select which is Moe, Larry, Curly, or Shimp. \240It took 3 tries to get a picture which satisfied the boys. \240 Here are the photos.
We talked to Alane and Steve after dinner and drinks. \240 Alane said when Olivia heard our voices she went to the window and looked out. \240 We miss her so much. \240We sent she and Dottie an Easter \240gift. \240 We hope they like the toys.
Our last sea day until we port in Jeddah tomorrow morning. \240 Some interesting update on the guards. \240Our friend Paul talked to one of the men. \240 He was \240retired British Navy and now he works for a security company. \240His job is to board a boat and stay on for 4 days, he is getting off this afternoon and tomorrow will be taken to a different ship going in the opposite direction. \240 In 4 days he gets off and does it again. \240Literally he goes back and forth for four months then he is off for 4 months. \240He said there has been an uptick of pirate attacks lately, and only about 30% of the ships are using guards now as the problem had diminished until recently. \240Very interesting.
Art class, the easy class has really been hard for me. \240We were to paint a desert scape and add camels. \240 I had ( operative word here had) a really great background. \240I added camels that were a failure, so I took them out. \240 Round 2 more camels and I took them out. \240 So I have a background that is not nearly as lovely as it was with zero camels. \240When it dries I will try once more to add camels. \240Third times a charm
Here is the artists work and my background. \240Stay tuned camels or camel non look alike coming soon.
Olivia has spring fever and is running all over the house jumping on furniture.
After dinner there was a opera singing concert in the atrium. \240 It was very nice. \240 We sat with Mary and Stephen. \240 Great fun. \240 Mary ordered a lemon drop, double sweet and sour, on ice with sugar on the rim. I only had one! \240
One of pur favorite bar servers is Nancy. \240Mashed is engaged to our SOM, Milos. \240 She is such a wonderful lady.
We had dinner with Jan and Russ. \240 I wore my Kate Spade cat shoes, which apparently two nights ago I told folks I would wear. I love these shoes, my sister-in-law also has a pair.
Trivia, alas we didn’t win again. \240Our celebratory dinner tomorrow will need to be a want to be dinner.
The wine tasting this afternoon was 7 wines from various regions of Europe. \240We enjoyed the tasting.
When we returned to our cabin Viking had delivered Easter candies. \240Also friends had sent candies as well. \240What fun. Notice the vodka in the background, we are in Saudi waters during the night. \240 All bars will be locked down and no alcohol will be served until we leave Saudi waters sometime tomorrow. \240We are hosting a cocktail party tomorrow. \240I know many of you are not surprised by this. Mica party Bane
We ported this morning in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. \240 Neither of us had been here before and didn’t know what to expect. \240It is Easter Sunday here, but the Muslims are celebrating Ramadan. This makes visiting different as the locals don’t come out until late afternoon and stay out until 2-3AM. \240From sun up to sun down they don’t eat or drink.
The port is on the Red Sea and it is beautiful. \240There is little swimming here because of the red coral. \240 The port is a very large commercial port and we were required to take a shuttle bus from the ship to the immigration center about 10 minutes away. \240After we passed passport controls and immigation we boarded our tour bus.
Of course I was on the lookout and found a cat.
Ritz Carlton Hotel
Ahmed our guide
We passed one of the oldest mosques in Jeddah and we weren’t permitted to go inside, but it was quite plain but lovely.
Here is a picture of the stores there were streets and streets of them
During the drive prior to visiting Old town Jeddah we saw the largest fountain in the world, the second highest flag pole in the world( the highest one is in Egypt ) \240we passed many hotels, and art. \240The city is very clean, modern, green, hot, friendly, very hot, a lot of great art and very hot.
. \240She and Dottie also enjoyed their Easter toys!
This building was the home of the gentleman who oversaw the city at its start. \240There is a very old tree in the yard that natives use as a meeting point.
We viewed older building that have been restored and done in the process. \240 The wood was exquisite and there was a definite French impact in some of the architecture.
We exited the bus at one of three main gates which were used to lock down the city at night. \240 Obviously these are no longer used with just the stone gates remaining.
We walked to a house to view how Saudi people lived. \240 Originally this house had no running water or electricity. \240 The stained glass windows and doors were unique. \240There was also a library filled with beautiful books.
We arrived at old town. \240The experience was diminished as the shops were closed. \240It would have added a great deal to the experience to see the various offerings expecislly in the textile area. \240 The stores seemed to be grouped by type. \240Most stores were in old buildings and the government is working to preserve many of these buildings.
As no alcohol can be served in Saudi the bars onboard ship are all shut down until we leave Saudi waters. \240We are hosting a cocktail party for 6 friends at 3 PM. \240I hope everyone fits in our space
We invited Birgit, Erik, Mara, Ray, Laura and Paul for cocktails at 3PM. \240We enjoyed cheeses and several vodka cocktails as well as wine. \240 We had a lot of fun. \240 The ship was scheduled to leave at 5, but for whatever reason we finally departed at 6:15. \240 Remember no drinks in the bars or restaurants until we leave port.
Maribella really enjoyed her Easter gift. \240We sent her a case of her favorite Kraft Mac and cheese spirals. \240They will last a few weeks.
The flag pole and fountain. \240 The fountain is only on at night. \240Maybe as we leave this evening.
After the 3 hours of cocktails we had our trivia team participation dinner. \240 We have yet to win, but we have another chance tomorrow. \240 We took some pictures at dinner, we were photobombed by friends Mary and Stephen.
Olivia can now sit in the open window at the Asp’s. \240 She is very happy
Flag pole from our balcony
The fountain from afar before it was turned on. \240 Other photos were taken after 5 when the fountain is turned on daily.
The art in the parks, green spaces and highways was very impressive. \240 Our guide indicated that artists from all over the world were invited to participate.
Today is a sea day. \240I went to art class and Jeff went to the gym. \240 In art class I added camels (for the 3rd time) to my painting from two days ago. \240You will note I am still failing camels. \240I see tonight my camels are too short/small. \240Tonight I took the camels out again, I will try a fourth time.
We have trivia and lunch and Jeff is working on his book and I am going to paint.
Trivia even after our uplifting talk by Jeff we still stumbled to second. \240 Bummer!
Tonight we had dinner in the \240Manfredi’s private room with Mary and Stephen and friends. We played the kings game and left, right, center. \240It was fun. \240I won once, yea!
IMPORTANT NOTE: One thing I have noticed as we have traversed the world is the differences in the toilet paper from country to country. The paper changes by country, but since India, it has been very thin, course and not very pleasant. \240 In Jeddah we had to delay our departure in order to get some toilet paper onboard. \240 Wow is it nice! (Not like charmin quilted at home, but certainly a step up) Two ply and soft, a great improvement over the India toilet paper we have had for nearly 2 weeks. \240 We will see how the tissue is in Egypt and onward.
Tonight in the Star Theater the opera singers on board gave their final performance. \240They are departing the ship in Egypt. \240Excellent evening. We are departing on our excursion tomorrow at 7:00 AM. \240Very early for me and it is a 12 hour day.
Today is our last water painting and we painted boats on water. \240 The boat was challenging but the background was fun to do. Here is the artist work and mine. \240 It is easy to tell which one is which.
Today is the first of two 12 hour days. \240Today we are docking at 5:00 AM and we are taking the tour to Petra.
We arrived at the Petra welcome center and proceeded into the courtyard. \240There were several shops and restaurants but we moved to the cavern. \240 This opening has been created by flash flood water moving between the rock formations for thousands of years.
We continued our walk along the trail. \240There were goats in the rock croppings and they were so colorful. \240 Mist wore collars and bells.
The next part of the city is the theater. \240 Originally it was covered with white marble, but it is still amazing. The area has caves above it so folks could sit in this area and in enjoy the performances. \240 Sort of like a very early loge. Originally the theater seated 25,000 people.
Wow what a day, we left port at 7:00 AM for our 13 hour tour. \240 We are driving 3.5 hours each way to Luxor. \240Our visit is jam packed, Karnak, lunch cruising the Nile, visit to Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. \240Then the 3.5 hour return trip. \240This was a once in our lifetime day and so memorable. \240
There are numerous statues in Karnak and it is interesting how many have withstood nearly 3000 years of wind and weather.
We board the boat which is a sail boat but the government doesn’t permit the sails to be raided due to the heavy river traffic so the boat moves with the current and another powered boat actually drags it in the needed direction.
There are many areas to explore.
Many friends were on our bus today.
Mary and Stephen
Leaving the ship this morning Viking staff were outside with snacks, juice, sandwiches and other goodies for our trip.
Jan and Pat
As we neared the port there were a number of restaurants with neon green lights. \240
On the drive back the sunset was beautiful. \240We returned to the ship about 8:30, very tired but what a day
New housing in a new city named the same as the old existing one.
Our guide indicated a house in Egypt in this area is never done as family’s of all generations live together. \240They add stories to the house when a child gets married. \240When one story is finished on the top are the necessary foundation and pillars as well as steps to add another story or wing. \240
I fell asleep on a small portion of the drive.this is not normal for me, but I was tired and had to get up really early.
There are many different types of architecture in then cities along the route. \240There are temples, old homes, new homes and interesting in areas outside large cities there is a new version of the existing city. \240 This is because of the tremendous population growth. \240 The new city is named the same as the existing one with New Cityin back of the name.
Driving through the farmland area was interesting. \240 Most of the farming is wheat and alfalfa, however the farming is all done manually. \240There is very little use of farm equipment it is all done by hand. \240Burros are used to pull wagons and work in the field. These farmers live a simple life.
Today is a sea day as we sail the Red Sea toward the Suez canal. \240 The sea is so blue, we think the bluest water we have seen. There is land visible from the starboard side of the ship. \240 There are a number of oil wells in the sea.
After art it is off to trivia and once again no cigar. Then to the South American wine tasting, and later a very late lunch.
There is a lecture on the Suez Canal this afternoon we are planning to attend. \240 It is being delivered by Geoff Peters a friend and fellow trivia team member.
Olivia is enjoying the warmer temperatures in Oro Valley and has an affinity for window sill sitting.
Sunset tonight was pretty. \240We can see land on both sides of the ship. \240 Tomorrow we enter and cruise the Suez Canal. \240
As usual it is a sea day and we are busy. \240 The ship has so many activities and speakers you can’t possibly do everything. Here is a picture from the Viking Daily.
Toilet tissue and diet tonic update: \240first since India we have had the worst diet tonic I have ever had. \240It is an India product in my opinion should have been left there. \240I’m trying to determine how many cases of this inferior liquid we have to go through to get Schweppes diet tonic back. \240 Those who know me well know I prefer Canada Dry tonic, but Schweppes has won me over especially compared to this Indian brand
On another note new TP today! \240Exciting it is quilted! \240This must have been brought onboard in Luxor. \240 This is the nicest we have had since Bali. \240 Yea!
I had art class and once again attempted to add the camels to my art from last week. \240 Alas I failed again and took the camels out for the 4 th time. \240 Bummer I’m left with a background again. \240 I’m not sure what to do now. \240 We painted a tree in art class. \240Mine is not complete but here is the camel-less landscape, the artists work and mine from today.
Today we are cruising the Suez Canal. \240It is wider in some portions than others and there are docks along the side in other portions. \240 There are even some statues. \240The water is still very blue and the canal is very blue.
Today entering the Suez Canal it will take the whole day to go through. \240The Suez Canal is an artificial waterway in Egypt extending from Port Said to Suez and connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez and dividing Africa and Asia. The 193.30 km long canal is a popular trade route between Europe and Asia.
Date completed: 17 November 1869; 153 years ago
Construction started: April 25, 1859
Ownership: \240Suez Canal Authority (SCA) is an Egyptian state-owned authority which owns, operates and maintains the Suez Canal
I also worked on my tree from yesterday adding some accents to the blossoms and accenting the block wall.
Viking gave us certificates certifying we cruised the Suez Canal
Sunset on the Mediterranean tonight
Dinner tonight at chefs table here is the menu. Pictures to follow
We exited the canal about 3 PM. Here are pictures leaving and cruising into the Mediterranean Sea
Tomorrow we port in Haifa, we are doing the city tour.
The trivettes - Mara, Mica, Brigit, and Leeann
Ray and Mara and jeff and I had a celebratory lunch. \240 The culinary team was hosting cheese fondue on the pool deck. \240 Zeus was on the deck playing and singing, the weather was extraordinary! Jeff and I did a selfie in the canal.
Art class I tried the camels again and failed, so I took them out again. \240This was the 5th time. \240My background still looks good , maybe I should try burros ?
Art class we painted girls on a beach boardwalk. \240I only painted one girl our beautiful granddaughter Maribella.
When I returned to the cabin after art and before trivia, I added camels to my painting for the 7th and final time. \240These are still not great camels, I kept working until I was able to produce something similar to camels
Olivia is still doing well. \240She loves to play. \240 Here she is with her three favorite toys.
Now off the trivia! \240 We won ! We won! We won! Finally. \240Trivia started late as we went under a large bridge and saw a small town along the side of the canal. Also we saw a mosque and some more art as well as a small train beside the canal. \240The train stopped and passangera waves at us.
Early this morning we ported in Haifa. \240Jeff and I elected to have a short day rather than a 10-12 hour day since we are going to Jerusalem and Bethlehem tomorrow. \240
You can look across the bay and see the gold dome and the hanging gardens.
Our first stop was the crusaders hostel. \240 The complex is massive and we toured several of the rooms within. \240
Cannonballs
Courtyard
A large amount of the flooring was covered with wooden ramps but here is an example of the original stone floors.
Here is the view of the sea leaving the tunnels.
Brides were nesting in these holes in the sandstone
Unfortunately the latrines were closed and we did not get to tour. \240The guide indicated that moving water ran through the area to flush the matter away. \240
Dining Hall this room would seat 800 men.
Our group minus Mara, Shaun and Linda
Ray minus Mara who is sick
Mary and stephen
Gretel our server. \240She sang for us tonight the Carpenter’s Close to You and other songs
Jeff and Mica
Jan and zgregg
Brigit snd Erik
After this stop we walked through the underground tunnel from one side of the city to the sea. \240It was a quick walk, about 10 minutes.
The port bus transferred is to the immigration/ passport control building. \240Our passports were scanned and a landing card was published which we had to scan in order to leave the building.
We proceeded to our bus and started our drive to Mt Carmel and a view of the hanging gardens. There were many apartment buildings on the ride.
Tonight we have the private room at Manfredi’s for a gathering. \240 Since it is April 15th and tax day we asked 5 couples we met onboard to join us for dinner. \240 These are by far the easiest and most economical dinner parties we have ever thrown.
In order to get to our next stop the tunnels we needed to walk through the market. \240This market sold everything from pots and pans, clothing, food, and on and on. \240 There were also several restaurants and many food stands.
We weren’t sure what this sign meant, so we asked the guide. \240This means warning wild boar. \240Apparently the city has a very high number of wild boar. \240We saw pictures of them, they rather look like javelina. \240If you are from Arizona you are familiar with these creatures.
