We got going a little later this morning due to Ellie getting in pretty late last night.
I went for a run north of our apartment up hill to Park Guell, the Antonio Gaudi designed park. \240Apparently it costs tourists 10€ to get in. I had my running stuff on and must have looked like a local. I went right past the guide and continued on my run. \240I got a great view of the sun rising over Barcelona. I also saw some more parakeets!
We started our day at when Barcelona Cathedral. \240We walked around the interior and then went up in the roof for some nice views.
After the Roman rule ended, they used old Roman stones for building material.
Henry the VIII sat there!
It was finally warm for a little while today!
To exit you have to walk through the cloisters past the 13 geese that always live there.
We grabbed lunch at a local sandwich shop. \240It must have been good since Guy Fieri ate there!
Ellie and I toured the Barcelona City history museum while Amy walked around the city. \240The museum mostly concentrated on Roman ruins and Barcelona’s Roman heritage. \240It was fun to walk around and learn from a real archeologist!
We caught up with Amy and walked around the El Born neighborhood. \240We finally had our Churros and hot chocolate!
Ellie and I went into the Santa Maria Del Mar church that dominates the neighborhood. \240The interior is quite sparse due to the fact anti-Franco Catalans burned the interior for 11 days in 1936. \240The Catholic Church sided with Franco and many Catalans were not too happy about it. \240You can still see scorch marks in the ceiling. \240They say Gaudi drew inspiration for the columns of the Sagrada Familia from this church.
Some workers way up on the top of the scaffolding.
El Born is one of the many interesting neighborhoods in Barcelona. \240The El Born Cultural and Memory center used to be an old market that shut down in the 70s. \240After a couple attempts at repurposing it, the city realized that it had a whole 18th century neighborhood beneath it and opened it to the public as a historical site.
Ellie and I are going to go on a tour of the site tomorrow.
We walked down to the water front and then up Las Ramblas (Ellie had not been there yet). \240Just off of Las Ramblas are Roman burial vaults so we stopped and looked.
We went to our place, connected with Luke, and then got dinner at a tapas place.
