Gatwick Airport

So the day is finally here. I’m flying off to Biarritz to start walking the Camino de Santiago. It starts in Saint Jean Pied de Port in France, just north of the Pyrenees and finishes, some 800km later, in Santiago de Compostela near the end of the earth in Galacia!

I’ll be taking for about five weeks, walking between 15 and 40km per day (8-25 miles). I’ll stay in bunkhouses run by nuns and monks and the odd luxurious hotel with a swimming pool.

I’ll carry everything I need for the 5 weeks in my new Osprey rucksack, one of the items that has caused my son to label me a “weight weeny!” \240The pack currently weights 8.6kg but I may jettison some of its contents before I start walking as I’m sure I’ve packed many unnecessary items.

I’m setting off alone but am sure I’ll make lifelong friends along the way. I’ll encounter all the weather has to throw at me, so far sun, rain, snow and wind \240have all featured in this week’s forecast!

Journey with me and experience the highs and lows that I’ll subject myself to.
