Los Mochis

The Copper Canyons (Barrancas del Cobre) are FOUR times bigger than the Grand Canyons and located in the state of Chihuahua in Northwestern Mexico. The best way to enjoy the scenery is on the famous El Chepe train. You can start from either Chihuahua (the capital of the state) and make your way east towards the Canyons OR start at Los Mochis and board the train westwards towards Chihuahua. I strongly starting from Los Mochis because the most beautiful scenery is between Los Mochis and Creel, which is a stop 5 hours before Chihuahua. Between Creel and Chihuahua there is not much scenery except for some vast pieces of land and some mountains.

In fact the best way to do this trip is to start at Los Mochis (2 hour flight from Mexico City) and then get off at Divisadeo stop which is where the stunning views of Canyons are at their best. Spend the night at the Mirador Posada Barrancas hotel and next morning go to the adventure park which has a cable car and the second longest zip lining in the world (not for the faint hearted).

We did the above itinerary and absolutely loved it. From Divisadero we hired a private taxi (we got the best driver in the world honestly) and took a quick tour of Creel and then drove onwards to Chihuahua from where we took a night flight back to CDMX.

Below are some of the pics from our starting point in Los Mochis and then the scenery on the train ride as well as from the hotel and the adventure park in Divisadero.

Will arrange and include specific comments on the pics later but for now pls scroll through to get an idea of what it is like.

Starting our day at the El Chepe train station at Los Mochis.

Really comfortable seats. Barely anyone here so feel like we have it to ourselves.

Just boarded the El Chepe train. Old school look from outside but a real luxurious train inside with a restaurant multiple bars (coke and coffee only of course for us🙄🙄). Still our tables got messy fast with some homemade sandwiches and orders from the bar (halal stuff...relax)

Nicest staff ever.

The viewing car was my favorite part of the train

El Chepe crossing first of \240the several bridges.

View from the left side of the train

View from the right side (terrace car)

These are the hot springs apparently.

Mom busy taking her own photos (almost dropped the phone outside the window) 😂😂

The train ride more and more beautiful as we ascend into the mountains.

It’s like a dream come true. My mom had not been able to get a good shot of the cactuses (didn’t know she had an obsession with those). Finally came across a cactus valley and ....

More cactuses...

This train ride should be a bucket list item for everyone...

The train goes over dozens of bridges. Just look at the video below.

Checked in to this amazing views

Living on the edge...literally

The difference between the Grand Canyons and the Mexican Copper Canyons (other than the copper canyon is being four times the size of the Grand Canyons) is that there is greenery on the Mexican canyons.

Cute little town of Creel. It’s called Puebla Magico which literally means a magical town.

Got to see some really cool history for Chihuahua. Didn’t realize that it played such a key part in the revolution of Mexico.

Right before heading to the airport took a tour of the beautiful town.
