Our first day on the road. Decided not to bother Boondocking and found a decent site at a campground near Lake Erie. We got here how about 4:30, and spent a little while trying to find a site that was level. But it all worked out. Amy heated up some dinner for us all while I connected Sheila, and then we went for a little stroll around the campground.

2
Elkhart

A full day of driving and we arrived at the Elkhart Campground. Decent place with small sites, but they had a pool and HUGE dog park. It was great being able to run the dogs around and play fetch when we got there.

We set up and turned in for the night.

Elkhart

Today we had two places we wanted to visit. The RV Hall of Fame and the Hall of Heroes.

The RV Hall of Fame was surprisingly pretty interesting. Their exhibit walked you through the history of RVs with dozens of antique RVs to look at.

In the afternoon we visited the Hall of Heroes. Luke and Leobreally loves the place. The curator was a really nice man who was great to talk to.

The only thing left to do is the Newmar Factory tour.

Custer State Park Legion Lake Campground

Jewel Cave National Monument

Jewel Cave was more impressive than I thought it would be.

6
Badlands National Park

I cook breakfast outside this morning, and we packed up our packs and went for a hike we’ve been wanting to go on. The trail is called “The Notch .” It’s rated as a strenuous hike, because hikers must use a \240ladder to get to the top, and then walk along some cliffs. Luke and Leo were terrific. Leo lead most of the way and was really in his element. He was singing his explorer song, from some cartoon which I can’t remember. But it was one of the cutes things I’ve ever heard.

Once we were done hiking we went back to the RV to hang out with the dogs, and Amy suggested that we leave for Yellowstone early, as there wasn’t much going on. This was about the fourth of her fantastic ideas, because we had a 650 mile drive to get to Yellowstone, and I wasn’t looking forward to it. But now I could take a couple of hundred miles off which would make the next day so much better. I just love this girl. Sir we took an hour and packed up, and got on the road. We stayed in Gillette Wyoming, I don’t Walmart. It worked out great because we did some shopping after we parked and also got some gas At a flying J.

7
Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park

We got a real early start this morning, and made great time. We arrived at the East gate to Yellowstone at about 230 in the afternoon. We drove to 70 miles across Yellowstone slowly, and enjoyed all the sites.

We tried to stop at Old Faithful with the RV, but there was no room to park. So we drove around the parking lot, gave up, and went straight to the campground.

We arrived at Yellowstone Grizzly RV park in that first we were pleasantly surprised. Although the sites were very small and close together, it was an extremely well taken care of place.

We set up our camp site, had dinner, and then Amy and I went out to do some shopping while the boys stayed in the RV and watched a little TV. It was a really nice day overall.

Yellowstone National Park

We got a late start this morning, and sat in some traffic on the way into Yellowstone. We stopped to look at a couple of huge Buffalo.

Afterward, we went straight to the old faithful geyser. We ate at the snack shop while waiting for the next predicted irruption, which was at 1:04 PM.

It was amazing to see Old Faithful irrupt for the second time in 22 years. The first time was when Amy and I got married and we were on our honeymoon.

After we saw the geyser erupt, we went into the gift store and I got my passbook stamped. Amy bought a water bottle and some other little items, and we headed back to the campground.

When we got back to the campground, Leo really wanted to go to this ropes and zip line place around the corner. So Leo and I went, and Amy stayed back in the RV with Luke and play Monopoly.

Leo was really terrific, even though we had a little problem. Leo got stuck halfway across a zip line. He was in the middle of a 200 foot wire that was fout \240stories above the ground just dangling. At first he panicked a little, but then I told him to pull himself the rest of the way across one hand at a time. He composed himself, gathered some courage, and pulled himself all the way across. I was so proud of him. Afterward he was just proud of him self. He thought he was a “real adventure,“ because he had rescued himself and been courageous.

9
Norris Geyser Basin

We made a point of getting up early today, and it was worth it. We were out of the RV and on the road to Yellowstone by about 8 o’clock. We stopped first at Gibbons falls, which was a very pretty waterfall on the way over to our next stop.

After Gibbons falls, we headed over to the Norris Geyser Basin. This is a fairly large area with many hiking trails and Boardwalk throughout. It’s all on top of a very geothermal area. We saw many geysers, vents, and Hot Springs.

It was a 3 mile walk in total and it was nice getting the exercise in the morning.

Our next stop was Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. This was a truly amazing place. Beautifully colored canyon created by the Yellowstone River. We drove to the top parking lot parked and walked the north rim Trail, and then the Red Rock Trail to the bottom of Lower Falls.

On our way back to the campground we spotted a Coyote who must’ve done something to a crawl because the crowd was chasing him across the field. It was so cool.

When we arrived back at the campground, the boys went to the playground and we did some laundry. We cook some sausages on the grill, and after dinner Amy and I went for a nice bike ride and spoke to some people about their entire career coach. I was impressed that it was only 280k.

10
Wild West Rafting

Today was our day for white water rafting. We woke up early and left by around 7 AM. We brought the dogs with us which was very exciting. Lucy missed behave a little bit, barking at people and such, but once they got on the rafts they did just fine. The boys had a terrific time as well. Smiles ear to ear the whole way down the river. We couldn’t take any pictures, but the rafting company is going to send us some and I’ll update later.

Everybody was exhausted so we came straight home and had some lunch and rested for a while. Then the boys went to the playground while Amy and I did some laundry and cleaned up the RV. In the afternoon we headed back out to Yellowstone so the boys could finish their Junior Ranger programs. We went to a Ranger led program at Norris geyser basin and the boys were sworn into the junior rangers there as well.

Afterward we went to Canyon Village for a quick supper to celebrate.

Amy was looking over our itinerary and figured out that we lost a day and had no place to camp tomorrow night. So I was able to book our site for one night at a KOA.

We took our time packing up and headed over to KOA Mountainside. Definitely not the nicest KOA we’ve been to, \240but actually we enjoyed it. It had larger sites, albeit not very level, and a very nice store.

Amy and I took a ride into town and had a long talk about Leo and our home. We had ice cream at a soda fountain and met a nice lady from Indiana. We went to the hardware store and then headed home.

Today we switched campgrounds again. We headed South through Yellowstone and into Grand Teton. Amy and Luke had a monopoly marathon on the way.

We arrived too early to check in, so we parked in the Flagg Ranch lot, and I played chutes and ladders with Leo. He was really into it and beat me twice! After he tied his shoes for the first time! It made me weepy.

Our campground, Headwaters Flagg Ranch RV, isn’t all that great. No cell, WiFi, playground or any other amenities to keep the kids occupied. Amy and the boys had nothing good to say about it as soon as we pulled into our site.

We decided to take a ride to Colter Village and look around. We walked the edge of Jackson Lake and browsed the visitor center.

Afterward we headed back to the RV and had dinner and killed some time. The weather was bad so there was not much to do.

After breakfast we thought we would head down to Jenny Lake so the boys could get their Junior Rangr badges and certificates, and afterward we were toying with the idea of leaving for Moab to get a head start on the drive. When we left I forgot my coffee and asked Amy to go back to the site. On the way back I suggested we pack up Sheila quickly and just stop at Jenny Lake on the way to Moab. We broke camp at lightning speed and made it to Jenny Lake in time for the Ranger program. Thee was no parking sonI waited for Amy and drove around. I took some great pictures of the Tetons while I was waiting.

We headed down to Moab afterward, and Crack-docked in Springdale Utah. We love Cracker Barrel!

We woke up early and headed into the Cracker Barrel for breakfast. We all ate our usual breakfast and had the place pretty much to ourselves. Amy and I noticed that Leo was actually staring at the waitress, we think because she was pretty. Leah was growing up so fast! I hate it.

We arrived at the KOA Moab at about 1230. it’s so hot in this part of the country, it was about 100° and very dry. this campground is very nice. The pool was terrific and it was very well-run and well-maintained.

Once we set up camp, we headed to Arches national Park for a little while. We just wanted to pick up the boys junior rangers books and maybe see a site or two.

After the visitor center we went to see a small collection of walking in arches.

We’re headed back to the RV for dinner and experienced our first desert monsoon together. After the monsoon was done, I took a terrific picture of Amy and saw the most vivid rainbow I’ve ever seen in my life.

I just love this girl.

That was it for the day. Time for cookies and bed.

11
Devils Garden

After yesterday‘s strenuous hike to delicate arch, we decided to go a little easier on the hiking today. We drove to the top of Arches national Park, and it’s Devils Garden area. We hiked to landscape arch. Landscape arch is one of the longest arches in the park. It spans 306 feet.

After our hike we went back to the visitor center and the boys got sworn in as junior rangers for Arches national Park.

We then headed back to the campground for some pool time. It was hot again today and we needed to cool.

After spending about three hours at the pool, we went back to the RV and relaxed for a bit. Amy and Luke played some monopoly, and I just putzed around at the RV. We then decided to head over to canyonlands national Park so the boys could pick up their junior rangers books. I was surprised by how beautiful canyon lands ones. It exceeded my expectations and we never even explored it yet.

We headed back to the RV stopping at Denny’s for dinner. This made Leo exceptionally happy! The kids just loves Denny’s \240restaurants.

12
Canyonlands National Park

Today was our first real day at canyonlands national Park. We got a little bit of a later start than we usually do, but nonetheless the park wasn’t very busy.

Our first stop in the park was Shaffer overlook. Stunning pull over and get out to walk for a little bit to look at Shaffer Canyon.

After looking at Shaffer Canyon, we went to Mesa arch. It was a short hike to the arch, but what was amazing was the drop on the other side of the arch. It must’ve been at least 500 feet straight down.

I have to Mesa, we wanted to get the boys their junior ranger badges, so we left for the visitor center. They were sworn in by a wonderful guy who was so good with them named Gary.

Leo had really been wanting to go to the dinosaur spot on the corner bar canyonlands national Park, so we did. We had a nice walk with over 100 dinosaurs and explanations and descriptions.

After the dinosaur Park we headed home. Leo and I went grocery shopping, I’m Luke and Amy played Monopoly again. When Leo and I came back we all took a little dip in the pool.

We arrived in Bryce Canyon today. It was an easy ride from Moab Utah. When we got to our campground we were pleasantly surprised. The sites were tremendous and there was plenty of room for the dogs and lots of privacy. We set up camp and headed out to take a quick look at the Canyon.

After our Quiktrip we return back to the camper and just hang out and relax for the rest of the day. I was excited to go horseback riding with Lukie tomorrow, even though it was sad that Amy couldn’t make it because she wasn’t feeling well.

13
Bryce Canyon

Today was a big day for Lukie and I. We went for a three hour horseback ride into Bryce Canyon and around peekaboo loop.

Luke was a little pouty about having to get up early, but he ended up liking it very much I think.

How are gods name was Keegan and he was very funny young man. Lukes horse was named Ishel, and my horses name was Nettie.

When we were done with our ride we headed back to the campground and had a quick lunch. Then all four of us went out to work on the junior ranger badges. We saw sunset point and price point before we headed over to the visitor center to see a Ranger program.

When we got back to the campground, Leo and I went and did laundry together.

I was really proud of the boys today, they finished their eighth Junior Ranger badge.

14
Watchman Campground

Today is leaving day. We woke up and had a nice breakfast and didn’t rush out, because our next destination, Zion, was only a couple of hours away. It was nice to take our time and pack slowly, get some exercise and enjoy each other‘s company.

The most exciting part of the trip was the tunnel inside Zion Canyon. There was only 4 inches of space and we had to get a permit so that the Rangers could block each end of the tunnel to make it a one-way road so that we could drive straight up the middle and be able to fit.

When we got to Zion our campsite was ready. A really nice side by the river with some decent shape. We set up so quickly and the boys played in the river. For some reason they just love rivers. I have to remember that next time we book campsites, that is to try and book sites that are on a river.

The boys were very tired after playing in the river and so we went into town and ate at a great little asked restaurant called meanies grill. I had a vegetable crêpe and it was delicious. Amy had a vegetable grilled cheese and she liked it as well.

15
ZION NATIONAL PARK LODGE

Today we decided to go for a hike in the morning. After breakfast we got on the shuttle and headed over to Zion Lodge and walked the lower Emerald Pool trail. There was a long wait for the shuttle, and the trail was crowded. I wish I could say I really enjoyed the morning, but there were so many people have made it very difficult to have a good time. Zion is the most visited national park in the country, and I realize that on this morning.

After the hike we came back to the RV and relax for a little while. The boys played in the river again and I returned a few emails and did some work. Later in the afternoon we decided to head out for ice cream and then to Walmart to do some shopping. When we got back to the RV we just heated up some leftovers and eat outside of the table. I played some rummy with Luke and the boys had some screen time before bed.

Today was our second day at Zion, and the big activity for the day it’s a family horseback ride. We had an amazing time.

Amy had a feisty little mare named Daisy, Luke had a sweet little gelding named Concho, and \240Leo had a mule named Fanxy, which he thought was a horse. We let him think that.

As we rode through Zion Canyon Leo continue to have hikers if they wanted to pet his horse, and telling them that there was a new sheriff in town partner.

In the afternoon we went out for a ride and made an impromptu stop at ghost town called Grafton. It was a pretty cool place in the graveyard was full of people who have died in 1866, and the whole family who have died from Indians.

Not much going on today. We traveled most of the day, I’m driving was smooth and easy. We stopped at the rock café in Stroud, OK.

One funny thing that happened is that I booked a KOA site around lunchtime and didn’t realize it was basically a parking lot for a casino. LOL. so we stayed in the parking lot of the Cherokee casino at Will Rogers Downs.
