I am jet lagged as hell but still had the energy to do some exploring of the city before it was time to check into the hostel - did a lot of wandering and saw the trevi fountain, presidential palace, Spanish steps, and villa borghese park (which had amazing views of the city). There is so much going on in this city it is unbelievable, every time you set a destination you end up stumbling into some random historical site or monument. So cool!

Porta Pia, not sure what this is but apparently designed by Michaelangelo

Randomly walked by this, apparently it is called Fontana del mosè

Trevi fountain - this place was unreal, the pictures don’t do it justice

I think but am not sure this is the presidential palace. Walked by and had no idea what it was until I saw a sign.

Some random statues I walked by on a corner. Each of these were on opposite corners of an intersection. This is what I mean by there is so much going on here.

The Spanish steps - didn’t realize this is what they were until I looked it up later! Very cool

Views from the top of Spanish steps

Peculiar statue

Stumbled onto this view in borghese park, picture does not do it justice

Some interesting buildings I walked by

The Vatican museums were interesting, the place is much more modern than I expected (apparently the only opened in 2000) and there is a very big mix of art - from Egyptian to greek to renaissance to modern and pretty much anything you could think of. Frankly it was very confusing as there were not clear distinctions between the different sections, and even with the guided tour it was hard to keep track of what century we were looking at. At the same time the art was great and I got to see works by a lot of famous artists like Raphael, michaelangelo, Van Gogh, Dali, and even Francis bacon. The Sistine chapel was the best part but unfortunately you can’t take pictures in there.

Some nice views of the Vatican gardens as well as Rome from the museum:
