Adel

Our first night in Iowa, we went searching for a good meal. \240Downtown Adel, just west of Des Moines, is 100% small-town America. \240The biggest building is host to the county seat, the town leadership, the courthouse, and the library. \240The streets around it are cobblestone and most of the neighboring buildings are on the national historic register.

We talked about how this clock tower and the street in front of it looked suspiciously like the one in a popular movie about time travel...

We came across a snapping turtle on the busy road...

...Jim donned his gloves, and despite the resistance ( he/she was ready to battle)...

...Jim found a safer place than the highway.

Sunrise this morning!

Madison County

Today, we went in search of covered bridges. \240There were a few with original timbers.

All but one of the bridges are painted red -not sure why. \240

We find lots of notes to loved ones, and hearts with names. \240Many are written and many carved into the wood.

In one of the bridges is a notebook where you can leave a message. \240Here Jim is reading a few of the notes. \240He wrote one as well-

A fun day in a county known for its covered bridges.

Nancy waaay down at the other end.

This turtle was near a pond.

The corn here was almost waist high. \240Corn is the highest domestic export for Iowa, and you can see it growing everywhere. We crossed the width of the state and corn is TOPS!

Davenport

As we enter Illinois, we cross the mighty Mississippi River.
