Kuala Lumpur ARRIVAL

TRANSIT

Joining Stefan in Malaysia! FYI Queenstown airport doesn’t do a security check for domestic flights 🤔

Arrived late in the evening with one big luggage (mine) still in transit from my connection in Singapore, but at least it wasn’t lost!!

LODGING @ CitizenM

Hotel bang for buck was 👍👍👍.

Get it, get it? 😂

FIRST LOOK

We wanted to see a little bit of where we were before bed so walked just a minute to the Jalan Alor night market (food). It’s definitely more expensive than local prices since it’s a popular spot with tourists, but still felt authentic!

Kuala Lumpur DAY 1

Our view in the morning!

Went straight back to Jalan Alor for breakfast, but it’s mostly a night market so only a few places were open.

We found Haianese chicken and dry curry noodle.Very delicious 😋

SIGHTSEEING

Walked around a bit trying to find Times Square shopping center.

Inside the shopping center and generally everywhere, Lunar New Year decorations were still up.

Headed to the Petronas Towers, which has a higher end shopping center inside.

Play video.

We opted out of going up the tower for views to check out a nearby park instead. There is also a space-needle like tower nearby called the Menara, but we read that the cost was not worth the view.

Across from the Petronas Towers, we saw some beautiful “green” high rises.

On the way to the KLCC Park...

There is a light show on the fountain a few times a night. We missed out, but we’ll just have to come back 😊.

Hardcore height calls for some hard core tip-toes.

Petronas Towers in the background in the orb!

I don’t know why there isn’t a single good one of Stefan here.. he wasn’t even the one holding the camera 😂.

There were parts of the park we were not allowed entry - “no baby, no entry”.

Got a better view of the fountain on our way back to the Petronas Towers where we had lunch at the food court.

Headed to the National Museum Malaysia and learned a lot about geographical, colonial history and more modern history and also the more recent political events that shape the culture and people today. My favorite part was seeing the traditional garments of all the ethnic groups that currently make Malayasia - Strait Chinese, Sikhs, Siamese, Indian, indigenous groups, and others that I can’t name. The diversity in ethnic and cultural backgrounds (and languages spoken) is amazing! Fun fact - Singapore became independent of Malaysia to avoid escalation of existing \240ethnic/racial tensions.

We also found a throne that might finally be good enough for His Royal Highness, Guinness.

More Lunar New Year decorations inside the museum.

We didn’t get to go the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, so we’ll just have to come back.

Jetlag caught up to us so we headed back to the hotel for a nap and then went back to Jalan Alor again for dinner. Forgot to take pictures 😭 but had delicious Thai noodle salad, Tomyam noodle soup, and cashew chicken. And also a dragon fruit + mango juice that I got sick from 🤢.

Batu Caves

Kuala Lumpur DAY 2

THAIPUSAM FESTIVAL

Our big and early plans for today - the Batu Caves!

But,

it is also the final day, out of three, of the Thaipusam Festival, which is a Hindi holiday. Processions started in the night and continued all day with Hindi’s making their way to worship at the Batu Caves.

The crowds were enormous and different groups of family and friend came in their marching attires, idols, drums and music, etc. One of our local cab drivers estimated that millions would pass through in just the early morning hours.

We also saw some more traditional body paint and series of metal hooks in backs. The other end of the hooks are attached to ropes which traditionally are used to drag the idols, and we saw some of these ropes were held by other people as maybe a restraint? Or some more modern form of this element of the procession? These worshippers are said to be in a trance.

So, in the end, we did not actually get to see the caves, and we wanted to limit our intrusion into their religious practice so we only went far enough to get a glimpse of the giant golden Statue.

Those are all people completely crowding the 272 steep steps that lead up to the caves!!!

We were also a little hindered by my food poisoning and the crowds, so, we’ll just have to come back for the cave, and also the dark caves with the bats, and also the nearby Imbi day market. And Bakut The where it’s best to dine before 9:00. It is reputed to be the best place for pork “tea”. Don’t look at me, this was Stefan’s find.

LAST CHANCE

I felt too sick, so the rest of the day I spent in bed, and Stefan took advantage to catch up on sleep.

But we did rally for one final traditional Malaysian meal, Nasi Lemak - apparently it’s the sides that make or break this dish.
