Annandale

Up at the crack of midnight (or 4am) for our flight to Chicago. Quick layover there, and got our bracelets to say we are cleared health-wise (Hawai Safe Travels with a vaccination card check) and we are on our way again

We scored big time when we booked aisle and window seats and the middle seats remained empty. Kinda stressful but worth it with the extra space. With the United app we could check the seating map right to doors closing, so it was nice not to have to wonder if they were our middle seat person every time a stranger approached.

Saw great views of Big Island as we passed (we visited in 2005)

Below is Kaho’olawe, between Big Island and Maui, small, dry island that can only be used for Hawaiian cultural purposes.

Crossing into Maui. Following the coast line is the road we would follow later to get to west Maui

Kahului Airport

Arrived on Maui just after 1pm, exhausted but excited. Despite a rental car shortage (during Covid, cars were moved to the mainland to save cost) Mike picked up our car with ease while the kids and I picked up the luggage. Small but efficient airport, despite the thousands of travelers coming in around that time, we we out and on our way in 30 minutes.

First stop: lunch at Dunes Cafe o’lei. I knew we were all going to be hangry coming off the plane, so with still 45 minutes to the condo, this was essential.

First Mai Tai!

Ahi tuna nachos

Calamari

In addition Mike and the kids had sandwiches/burgers and I had Panko crusted ono with lilikoi butter

Haleakalā

Up and out at just after 3am to do the 64m trip to the Haleakala National Park to view sunrise from the summit. We arrived at 5am and waited in 40 degrees F and wind for sunrise.

Mauna Kea on the Big Island:

To the left is Mauna Kea, 80 miles away, and to the right is Mauna Loa, 100 miles away, both on Big Island:

Iao Valley

Snorkeling at Olowalu reef. The reef looks great, but the visibility today was not good.

Maui is famous for food trucks and have several food truck parks. Here we are having lunch at a food truck park with the highly recommended Thai Me Upp. Best food so far this week!

The road to Iao Valley

Iao Valley State Park, incredibly lush and beautiful

Coastal road is so beautiful with the tree canopies.

Mid afternoon snack: shave ice from Ululani’s. Dinner: take out from The Fish Market, ceviche, fish and pork tacos and fried shrimp.

Another beautiful sunset

7
Hana

Up at 5am and we get to see another sunrise as we head to Hana

The Road to Hana (52 miles) took 2.5 hours plus an hour to get to the starting point. We headed straight for the end point, which for us was the Haleakala National Park about 30 miles on the other side of Hana. It is very windy, narrow, and passes over 59 very old bridges, of which 46 are only one lane wide. There are around 620 curves along the road. And then you have to turn around and drive back

Enormous tree on the other side of Hana

Wailua Falls. This was our one stop before HNP

We entered the Haleakala National Park for the second time this week to walk the Pipiwai Trail and to see Oheo Gulch, aka the seven sacred pools. First stop on the Pipiwai Trail is Makahiku Falls

Then this tree

It grows roots to support its branches

Another waterfall on the trail

And then one of the main attractions of the trail: the bamboo forest

Entering the bamboo forest

When the wind blows the forrest sounds like wind chimes

The other main attraction: Waimoko Falls. It’s like entering a horse shoe shaped gully with small waterfalls all around you, but this one is the biggest

Then onto the Oheo Gulch Trail

Hala tree

Oheo Gulch pools

And it finally ends in the ocean

Quick lunch at a food truck area in Hana: poke bowls and grilled pineapple

Wai’anapanapa State Park

Nakalele Point Lighthouse

Lazy morning at the condo, brunch and enjoying the view. Low tide so the reefs are very visible

Maui Sands Condo grounds. I chose this accommodation because it was ocean front, ground level, with great snorkeling right in front of us, very small resort in terms of number of units per square whatever (22 years and still not used to the archaic measuring system) and had AC in

Last time we passed this, Mike said: Look, a rock waiting for a bus!

Nakalele blowhole. Bought some banana bread, choc chip shortbread and macadamia nut shortbread from Mama Lei’s stand

View of Honalua Bay where we snorkeled on Saturday. Couldn’t fly the drone because of proximity to Kapalua Airport

Banana bread stalls are everywhere. Here we taste test one from Mama Lei’s and one from Farmers Market, with Lilikoi cream cheese from Farmers Market

Another beautiful sunset

Poke for dinner. Without a doubt, Foodland Deli has some of the best poke we have ever had, and a huge variety. This is ahi furikake and ahi with wasabi.

Two Nene geese came to visit. They are super tame and come on to the lanai and right to the door. My guess is someone has been feeding them. Very cute!
