Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort

We arrived today - started travelling from Birmingham at 5am and didn’t settle into bed until 10:30pm Mexico time. Nearly a whole 24 hours!

I got bumped by one of the guys in the hotel. He gave me rum under the pretence that it was included in the all inclusive package.. By the way he was flicking that wrist with this pinky out I should have known…

Ebs said to ask one simple question before I say yes to anything…

‘How much?!’

It was a £10 mistake, it could have been worse!

The hotel is beautiful, very lavish. Tomorrow we shall explore it more! \240

A lazy start to the day, can you blame us?

This called for room service.

We explored the hotel and sunbathed a little, still a bit tired from the travelling too I think. But we’re \240feeling like we’re getting a lovely rest and just going with the flow. The flow of the unlimited drinks! 😂🍸

In the evening we decided to check out the hotel entertainment which was Aladdin - The Show. It took us a couple of margaritas to get through it but it kept us entertained!

The weather was disappointing today and where we are staying there isn’t much to do if you can’t be outside. This meant food, sleep and drink!

We decided to make some plans for the rest of the trip. We are hoping to visit the Mayan Ruins, go to a cenote and visit a water park, either Xplor or Xcarat.

We already have a day trip booked with Ronnie for Tuesday to go to Isla Mujeres which apparently has the most beautiful beaches and is just a good vibes island which we’re looking forward to.

Highlight of the day for me was trying the sushi restaurant called Sunan.

My starter was salmon sashimi 🍣

My main was fried squid sushi roll, fried rice and robatayaki - a spread of barbecued tuna, meat slices, octopus and king prawns.

Dessert was mochii and green tea sake roll cake.

I thoroughly enjoyed it all, was great to try new things and can’t wait to go back again!

Sunday. We started with the meeting so we could have optimal time sunbathing today and the weather has improved!

We literally spent all day outside and had a little stroll down the beach. Enjoyed a few strawberry diaquaris, tacos for lunch and tenderloin for dinner.

Tomorrow we’re going outside the hotel to Cancun to explore the city a bit more, maybe spend some pesos if we can find a cute market.

Mercado 28

Instead of ordering room service we had breakfast in the buffet section. Ebs was happy with his selection!

Today we decided to venture out of the hotel and see a bit of Cancun. There was a free shuttle service from our Hilton to the Hilton Canopy based in the city. We took the shuttle there and took the R2 bus to a market called Mercado 28.

There were stalls after stalls of bags, magnets, T-shirts, souvenirs etc. But with each stall came at least one person trying to sell something to you. The novelty soon wore off! At one point we were trying to figure out what restaurant to take a break at and these people swarmed around us like flies! It was an experience to say the least!

For the evening they had a fire show on the beach. They were doing acrobatics and tricks, it was really cool!

For the evening we had a steak dinner and some red wine… Let’s just say waking up in the morning was near impossible! 🍷😵🎉

Isla Mujeres

Today was the day we had planned to go to Isla Mujeres 🚤 🏝

So quick story….

On the day we landed at Cancun airport, there were a line up of people selling Cancun experiences. This guy called Ronnie stopped us to talk to us about going to Isla Mujeres for the day. It’s a little island that you get a boat too and it’s listed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Kind of like Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight 😂 Anyway, Ronnie promised we would get breakfast, 4 return tickets for the boat, a bottle of tequila, beach bags and golf cart hire for the day. All for $20 per person. He was a happy guy, we decided to go for it! We always knew there was going to be a catch and today was the day we’d find out what it was….

The shuttle collected us at 7:30am and we made our way to another hotel to have breakfast. There we sat down and saw Ronnie as promised! He handed us the tequila and told us someone would be with us soon. He said that as part of the deal, there would be a 90 minute presentation we would need to sit through. That was fine, we had time, it was early, we’d have all day at the beach. We were introduce to a guy called Luis who took us to breakfast and wanted to ask us a few questions about how we travel - a quick survey. He then proceeded to show us around this newly built complex. On the outside it looked like a hotel but on deeper inspection Luis told us they were luxury apartments. He took us around, explaining if we were to purchase one of these apartments the perks we would receive and how it would benefit our travel worldwide! Forget timeshares or fully owned properties abroad… this was called ‘The Residency Club’.

This picture was on the balcony of our new home 😂😂😂

With each new element of the club being explained to us, we found the hours slipping away. To cut a very long detailed story short, we had to firmly insist that we didn’t want the lifestyle this club had to offer us - nor be tied down to monthly payments for the next 50 years of our lives! 😂

There’s a lot more to the story which we’ll explain one day but after nearly 5 hours we finally made it to Isla Mujeres!

We rented a golf cart, rode the island, got some lunch and relaxed on the beach.

The water was all different shades of blue and green. It looked like a jewel! It was so clear and beautiful!

We got back around 9pm, had some dinner and then we were shattered! We had to get as much rest as needed because tomorrow we plan to go to a Cenote and Chichen Itza - one of the 7 wonders of the world!

7
Chichén Itzá

Today we booked to see one of the 7 Wonders of the World - Chitchen Itza. Our day started at 8am, a shuttle picked us up to take us to a big coach ran by a company called Cancun Passion. We spent the day with them looking after us as we travelled to Yucatan.

It was roughly a 3 1/2 hour to Chitchen Itza but we made a few detours along the way which made it seem less! In Mexico they have places called cenotes. They are natural underground reservoirs of water. Some are deeper than others but they average around 49 metres deep. We stopped off to visit one in Valladolid called Cenote Saamal. They ask you to take a quick shower before you go in to get rid of any toxins that are in any creams that have been used. In the water were little fishes that keep the water clean and disinfect it. We had to wear a life jacket (thank goodness) - Ebs jumped in and I carefully walked in! It was cold to begin but quickly warmed up and it was so nice to chill in there for a little while! There was a waterfall, it was just so nice to see Jehovahs creation in a wonderful way.

We were there for around an hour and set off on the rest of our journey. We drove through some old towns along the way and the tour guide explained the history and culture of the area.

We finally arrived at Chitchen Itza. It was quite busy, we broke off and had a walking tour. There was so much information to take in explaining the Mayan people and how they used to live. They were a pretty violent kind of people and used to believe in many false gods which meant offering sacrifices to them in order to receive things like good weather and fertility. There were many pyramids built like the Chitchen Itza, bigger and better in fact. But what made the one special was the sheer mathematical efforts put into it. It was known as the calendar of their time helping them to keep track of the year, therefore helping them to know what sacrifices were going to what gods at what point in the calendar year.

There was limited shade around it and it was 34 degrees so we had umbrellas and sunscreen!

Along the walkways were market stalls selling carved masks, jewellery, T-shirts and memorabilia of Frida Kahlo (the famous unibrow Mexican painter). Some of their favourite phrases were ‘Only 1 dollar’ ‘Almost free’ 😂😂

Then it was off home! The long journey back. We had a good sleep that night ready for more plans the next day!

Xplor

Today we planned to go to a theme park called Xplor. It’s one of many in a chain called Xcaret.

We did a lot of research to make sure we picked the right one to go to. But with that meant I had to overcome at least one of my fears.. Caves 🤦🏽‍♀️ It was basically like this the whole way through!

As soon as we arrived at the park we had to walk through the entryway to buy tickets and put our things in lockers. It was at least a 15 minute walk... a very long 15 minutes for me!

The activities they had were underground swimming, rafts, zip lines, hammock zip lines and ATV driving.

We swam underground in caves (which I had to quickly get used to!), they had an obstacle course which included Ebs and Natty sabatoging me and Shan trying to get through it!

Zip lining through the jungle was literally one of the scariest things! It had to be done alone and once you began, the commitment was made. You had to go through all 14! Some were higher, some were longer, I think the highest one was 45m and took 49 secs to get across. It’s amazing what you think about in that time..

Imagine if a bird flies into me, how far from the ground am I, is this what Jane felt like when she hung onto Tarzan, 🎼 Jehovah, Jehovah, there is no God like you..’, is this classed as an extreme sport, I wonder when they last did the maintenance on these things…..

But hey, I made it through and survived! We had to put everything in lockers for the whole day and we were to cheapskate to buy a photo pack so we don’t have any action shots of the day but the memories were great. My favourite was the hammock zip line. You literally sit in a hammock and zip line into the water.. it was so fun!

In the evening, we met with some of Ebs friends he had previously met. We went out to a restaurant and had a very expensive meal 🤦🏽‍♀️ There we also tried cockroaches!

Our friends took us for a traditional dessert called a marquesita. It’s basically a crepe mix with loads of fillings and toppings. You can have all kinds in there but traditionally you also have inside a mature cheddar cheese to give it a kind of salty sweet taste. Me and Shan shared one and we just had Oreo’s, strawberries and the cheese.

It was an acquired taste but I’m glad I tried their delicacies! Then we got a taxi home and crashed for the night!

Today was an ultimate chill day. After all of the excursions, every part of my body was aching so we had a cheeky lie in! We got breakfast downstairs in the buffet and spent most of the day sunbathing by the pool.

We tried a lunch at the Asian restaurant called Sunan. We had pork ribs and rice. It was delicious 🤤

For our last meal we had a steak cooked to perfection at Auma, the steakhouse restaurant. We played some games and chilled out for our last night!

Cancun International Airport

Farewell Mexico!! Thank for some wonderful memories but it’s on to the next one!!

We had our last room service, our last lunch and made our way to the airport to go to Los Angeles.

Our friend, Matt, is looking after us. We’ve got lovely accommodation in a condo by the beach apparently. I’m sure tomorrow we’ll see it in all its glory.

He planned a party but honestly with all the travelling we didn’t get to the condo until 12 and we heard the party had finished so we’ll catch up with everyone tomorrow!
