Italian Mutual Benevolent Society Tomb - tallest and largest tomb in St. Louis Cemetery 1 in New Orleans. This marble tomb was built in 1857. Italian immigrants could join the Society, pay dues and be buried here. Supposedly the tomb has room for 1000 bodies. A year after burial, the remaining bones of the corpse were placed in a room with other older bones so there was more room to bury others. It was an affordable way for Italian immigrants to bury their dead. The statue on top of the tomb is named Charity. \240

Marie Laveau was a famous and powerful voodoo priestess and free person of color who lived in New Orleans in the 19th century. Renowned in life and revered in death, some believe she continues to work her magic from beyond the grave. Marie's tomb is the object of adoration and the site of Voodoo offerings, with many visitors marking their pilgrimage by adorning the tomb with at least one large "X". After years of desecration, her tomb was recently restored from its vandalism and makeshift shrines.

Leaving coins, candles, flowers or fruit is a common practice as a gift or offering. Along with these mementos is the act of marking tombs, usually with three x’s. Some people believe an old Voodoo tradition of marking three X's on a tomb and saying some magic words awakens the spirit of the person interred to grant your wish.

In 2010, actor Nicolas Cage purchased two adjacent plots for his final resting place, a 10-ft. tall pyramid tomb. Latin inscription "Omnia Ab Uno," translates as "Everything From
