11109 Old Carriage Rd, Glen Arm, MD 21057, USA

Left Baltimore at 8:30 AM and reached Breezewood PA after an exciting drive. We saw a car being lifted by a crane out of the trees on 70, got pulled over for going 72 in a 70…thank goodness for cruise control 🤣…Jeremiah found his journal from Aunt Therese and now we are enjoying Starbucks on our way to the turnpike!…

2
Mad Mex Monroeville

Lunch Stop with Aunt Jan and Uncle Barry at Max Mex! We even remembered to take a picture!

It was all quesadillas and fajitas. Adrian had a crab quesadilla that he said tasted like a crab cake…new meal plan item for the school year… 🤔

3
Dairy Queen

Adrian and Jeremiah’s first Dairy Queen Blizzards! It was a quick meal so we could go back to the hotel and rest. Loved the baseball theme on the cup and that the O’s were front and center!

Today we traveled through three states, stopping in a fourth to rest overnight.

We traveled 417 miles over 7.5 hours. We saw license plates for 24 states, including Alaska, and 1 for Quebec.

We drove through some interesting places including a town called Flushing and a county called Licking where we passed Fitzgerald Sanitation…

The Target we stopped at outside of Pittsburgh was located on Bullseye Blvd—Adrian got a kick out of that.

4
Target

Starbucks stop…he got some kind of Pineapple Passionfruit Refresher…he didn’t want me to take his picture but I caught him smiling.

5
Reptile House

Bucket List Item Checked! After 2 years of patiently waiting, Adrian finally said hello to Kudra, the Gabbing on Viper at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Kudra’s head was back by the door but she was awake and moving around.

The building she lives in is the oldest zoological building in America.

Some fun facts about the Gaboon Viper…

6
Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

What a great visit to the Cincinnati Zoo!

The Bald Eagles are all rescued and sadly they are injured and cannot be released back into the wild. It was so cool to be so close up to them.

We were very excited to see the Gorillas (or at least I was). They were in the middle of an “intro” to create a new troupe.

We met a volunteer at the zoo named Jim who told us that Ndume (the silverback) is 41 and considered middle age.

Ndume seemed restless and kept pacing and tugging hard on the ropes to get the attention of the females,

For some reason our family is drawn to manatees…or it just reminds ours of being in Epcot.

Love, love, love the name Swim Shady!

7
Nine Irish Brothers, West Lafayette

Having dinner at the place Jeremiah found. The restaurant was founded by a man who’s lifelong dream was to own an Irish Pub. The food was delicious and the boys LOVED the wings. Jeremiah especially loved the house favorite “bomb” sauce (short for car bomb). The Irish soda bread was very good, too.

Wing Brothers… Jeremiah got “bomb” sauce and Adrian got BBQ

I tried a 9 Irish Red Ale.

Hampton Inn & Suites West Lafayette

Daily Recap:

It was a GREAT day! Including some late night swimming! Doggie paddle races, dolphin dives, and a pool shorter than Canpus…

Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio

Frank Lloyd Wright Day for Jeremiah

1889-1909 Frank Lloyd Wright builds and lives at his Oak Park home. He was 22 when he and his first wife began living here.

In 1894 he did his first addition.

10
Palmer House a Hilton Hotel

The original Palmer House Hotel was a wedding present from Potter Palmer to his wife. It was open only 13 days before the Great Fire of Chicago.

Palmer and his wife rebuilt the hotel and Mrs. Palmer filled it with beautiful mosaics, artwork, and Tiffany chandeliers…

I tried the 1871 cocktail.

We had fun just staring at the ceiling and soaking up the surroundings. Jeremiah loved it and wanted to just “hang out”.

Live music is played on the weekends.

Adrian loved sending our postcards through the chute to be mailed.

11
Wrigley Field

Hoping the rain stays away cause it’s time for a Ball Game!

12
Wrigley Field

The only member of our family to ride the EL train, Tommy flew out of BWI this morning. His flight was delayed due to vomit on the previous flight 🤢

Two happy boys, very excited to see their Daddy!

It’s Kids Day at Wrigley Field! Adrian got to run the bases!

While we were waiting in line, we saw the New York Mets getting onto their buses.

They were also taking up parts of the field.

It was really exciting to see the Ivy Wall!

Lincoln Home National Historic Site

Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln’s home in Springfield, IL

After touring the Dana-Thomas House, Adrian really wanted to see the Lincoln House, so we made an extra stop.

President Ford was a NPS Ranger! And hugely responsible for the creation/preservation of this historic site.

The Lincoln’s home in the “new neighborhood” in Springfield—just a couple blocks from the Old State Capitol.

When the Lincoln’s first bought this home it was 1-story, like the house in the background. They would renovate the home a couple of times until it became like it is today.

A lot of the furniture in the home belonged to the Lincolns, such as the black couch and chairs.

Lincoln’s library above.

Mary’s sewing table.

The original pattern of wallpaper—French inspired.

The “fancy” stove in the kitchen where Mary cooked food for 500 people scheduled to arrive at their home for a campaign rally! 😳

La Posada Hotel…a stunning \240Mary Colter masterpiece that has been painstakingly restored on Route 66 and the Santa Fe Railroad (the hotel remains the actual Amtrak stop).

25
Turquoise Room LLC

We arrived for breakfast at the Turquoise Room. The Turqoise Room was a luxury diner car on the Santa Fe Railway that many Hollywood stars made famous and trendy.

The modern day Turquoise Room is the delicious dining room at La Posada that pays homage to the OG.

Pictured above is a radiator cover used as the reception desk. I love how different it is from the late Victorian style ones in our old House on Guilford.

The dining room had a 1930’s feel with the rounded booths and decorated glass windows.

There were little tributes to Fred Harvey and the Harvey Girls all over the restaurant.

When you don’t have to share a bed you take up all the space and covers 😂

26
Grand Canyon National Park

Picnic Lunch at the Grand Canyon, complete with table cloth!

27
Pipe Creek Vista - Kaibab Rim (Orange Route)

Our day began before sunrise and was one of the most memorable days I have EVER had in my life!

We began with sunrise on the Grand Canyon Rim at the village by Hopi House and El Tovar.

It was cloudy but still beautiful!

We encountered an Elk on the way to the start of our tour!

Clearly the Elk couldn’t be bothered to pause breakfast for a photo! 😂

28
Grand Canyon Scenic Airlines

Arrived for the start of our 12-hour, multi-tour day! Tommy set up our tour. And just WOW! Little did we know how amazing it would be!

Boarding the flight for our aerial tour in a plane designed especially for touring the Grand Canyon.

The boys got what they called “first class” seats, but more likely due to size and weight. We all had to weigh in, including our backpacks, etc. before they gave us our seat assignments.

I don’t know if any of us truly knew how spectacularly breathtaking the views would be at this point!

Take off and we are quickly flying over the Piney Forest.

There was a slight tease as we flew parallel to the South Rim and Desert Rim.

29
Grand Canyon National Park

By 7am we had passed through the quiet zone and made our way over the canyon for some of the most amazing views! At some points we were actually below the canyon rim!

The ground changed from the Piney Forest to these little “hills” as we turned perpendicular towards the canyon.

We sat on opposite sides of the plane. Unlike a “typical” plane, the windows were quite large making for beautiful panoramic views no matter what side you were on.

The Colorado River flows through the Grand Canyon. They have been in the middle of a drought for sometime, although it’s monsoon season currently. We had a decent amount of rain overnight so instead of the typical turquoise color, the river flowed with sediment, making it appear brown in parts.

30
Grand Canyon National Park

⬆️ Not “The” Horshoe Bend.

31
Navajo Nation

This bridge goes over the canyon on Navajo land. There are two bridges, the OG to the right and the new bridge on the left. We are told we will drive over this bridge later today after our rafting trip.

32
Marble Canyon

We got very excited when the water changed colors!

We expected it to be brown the entire trip!

33
Kayak Horseshoe Bend

Horshoe Bend! Absolutely gorgeous! We were so lucky that it rained overnight and not this morning!!

34
Cameron Trading Post

On the bus ride back we drove through much of the Navajo Reservation. We stopped at Cameron’s Trading Post and they had what I call the “southern dill” pickle. It’s basically garlic and vinegar. I haven’t tasted one in so long!
