Tell Me Why the Fish Jump

“The universe is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.” Eden Phillpotts

I recently met a woman, who was discussing her work, and her area of expertise to a large group of women. She said something similar to, “If you are one of those who walk a beach and the fish jump at your feet, I can tell you why.” Now, that was one of those moments where a thousand memories come rushing into a split second, and I thought, “holy shit…that happens to me all the time.”

It’s not an exaggeration to say this is a regular occurrence whenever I am near water. I walk the shore, the fish walk along side. They hop, jump and skip beside me. I see fish jump that no one else does. Once, and I swear this is true, I had a beluga whale follow me. He chattered and chirped, certainly trying to carry on a conversation. This went on for minutes, up on his/her tail, talking directly to ME. The only thing that wasn’t beautiful about that day is that I wasn’t able to talk back. At least not in a way I was certain that he/she truly understood.

All of these moments, these memories, instantaneously slammed to the forefront, and I absolutely had to know, why DO the fish jump? As soon as I could make my way to her, I walked up to this woman and said, “Please, you have to tell me why the fish jump.”

Now, I am not going to ask you to believe the everything you read from this point on. It may be beyond your realm of conviction. Your personal deductive logic might tell you it could never be so. However, what I will ask is that you use your imagination. And for a moment, if you can, remember, we have not solved all the world’s mysteries. We do not understand nature, the universe in totality. There are many different gods in this world. Even science, specifically the study of quantum physics, tells us that things may not be exactly as they appear, that we, everything on this earth, we are all energy. What happens between us, nothing but a transference of energy. The plants can speak using this energy. We, all the magical creatures, things of this earth, are connected through energy. So with that in mind, read on.

When I sat down with this woman she asked me about my my experience with fish. I told her all I remembered. As well, I told her I’ve always loved the water, needed to be close to it. It was calming for me to just be near it. This was especially true when it came to the ocean. She asked me about my parents. I told her what I knew, which isn’t much from my father’s side. She asked where was I born, near water? Sort of. She asked where was I conceived. The same area as far as I know. Wait though! I told her that when my mother was in the early days of pregnancy, and I believe it was when she told my dad that she was pregnant, they were in Florida. She said, “Ok, well are you open to the idea that perhaps, that was the time that you, your soul, entered that growing little body, and that also perhaps, your soul came from the water?” She went onto explain that because I perhaps came form the water myself, sea creatures recognize me, my energy, and therefore respond to me when I am close.

There are people that will dispute the fact that humans have souls. It’s been proven, souls have mass. If they have mass, are a “thing”...certainly they are then energy. There are people that will dispute the theory that a soul could have come from the ocean. But we humans, who don’t really know how we started, or where we go when our bodies can no longer contain us, who are we to disregard any and all possibilities?

For those of you who may be bucking against what you’ve already read, hold onto your panties because it’s about to go well beyond what we’ve already touched on. We proceeded to discuss my ancestry. I told her that I had recently had it analyzed for the express purpose of learning more regarding my paternal heritage. I am mostly German and English Welsh, which I knew, and assumed. As it turns out, I am also Irish. Not just Irish, but from a very specific part of the Emerald Isle.

My mystical woman probed some more and asked about games I would play when I was young. Turns out, one that I remember vividly was not a board game or a card game, but one that came from childlike inventiveness. I loved to pretend I was a mermaid. My aunt would frequently take us swimming, and I waited for those days. I made my cousins pretend they were all mermaids too. Everyone had to describe themselves, their mermaid selves, in minute detail. What color was your tail, your hair, what kind of crown did you wear? What type of jewelry, was it made of shells, or from sunken treasure off of a shipwrecked boat?

My guide asked if I had ever read or heard about selkies? They are seal people, or shapeshifters, known in Scottish lore, as well as other places like Ireland, and Sweden. As well, Ireland also has stories that rotate around merrows, or mermaids. Laugh if you must, I know some of you will, but again, imagination and possibility. Do we really know all there is to know about evolution? Can we say for absolute certain that while some creatures evolved after dragging themselves out of water, there wasn’t more than fish that evolved below the surface? \240I’m not trying to convince anyone, of anything, just again pointing out, possibility.

After my sit down, I did a little more research. Would it be very hard for you to believe that my ancestral lands have deep and long stories connected to the water, and creatures that do, or may live within them? As it turns out, there are many legends of the selkies, and of merrows. Actually, there is a story related to merrows, or mermaids, and the VERY part of Ireland I come from. At Kilone Abbey, in Co. Clare, there is a legend of a merrow that would swim up to the lake, and then enter the crypt of the abbey and steal the wine. Unfortunately she was caught and stabbed. Now it is said, that every forty years the water of the lake turns red with her blood. There are more, that is but one.

It so happens that this summer I will be traveling to Dublin. I already had plans to drive to the area of Munster, where my Irish ancestors are from. Surely I will also be making a visit to Kilone Abbey.

Why I am telling you this story now, why am I even sharing it? It truly was something I wanted to keep close because I didn’t want the naysayers asking how I can believe such things. I believe in a lot of things. If I don’t believe, I am certainly open to more than some. All I know, is that for me, it truly felt like stars aligning, there was suddenly a line, traveling from dot to dot and they magically all joined together. Things I had witnessed, feelings I had, they all made sense, and, they all were connected. Unexplainable pulls towards places, ideas, feelings that had been there my whole life, now seemed to have a reason.

Maybe it’s all my own personal fairy tale. Maybe not. I share it now because who doesn’t need a fairy tale to remind them things aren’t always what they seem? Who doesn’t want to know they, things, are connected, even if you don’t see it yet? It exists if you look for it. Who doesn’t need to be reminded, that no matter how bad things may be, there is always possibility? You will find it if you search for it.

We don’t know why the world is in chaos right now, not really. Some say it’s man’s doing, others say it’s nature’s. You’ve seen the news, read it. You hear the scary stuff, but also the unexpected. Pictures taken from space of how the air over horribly polluted cities is now clear. The canals of Venice are blue again. People playing music and singing to one another. People, who perhaps, have never spoken a single word to one another. Connectedness. Maybe the world was at a tipping point, that somehow we were about to topple over a cliff, one that we would never climb our way back up from? Maybe this is nature’s way of pulling us back from that cliff? Even if it’s only enough so that we have a chance to then walk back down the mountain on our own? Possibility.

You may choose to debunk anything you like from the above. One thing I will go to the mat with you over is the belief, backed by science, that we are all energy. We can all receive and transfer it at will. With each other, with the planet and all things that live upon it. We are all connected. So during this time, please remember that. If you are feeling alone, remember you aren’t. Reach out by whatever means necessary, however you best communicate, the phone, email, music from your balcony, someone WILL answer. Connectedness. Remind yourself, that as it does, when given the chance, nature balances itself. It’s what it’s designed to do. Possibility. And please, remember whatever what you put out into the world travels and transfers. So, especially now, in times like these, put out only that out into the world, that which you would want in return.

PS...This by no means is meant to defelect, detract or in anyway diminish anyone’s loss, suffering, or just plain sadness. Just a reminder that no one, not any of us, are alone, there are still amazing things happening in the world along side the scary, beautiful people doing beautiful things, and as always, possibility. Much love. 💗
