Above $10,000 per person, travel stops being about better hotels. Instead, it buys places that are hard to reach at all: a fly-in camp in the Okavango Delta, a kingdom that limits its visitors, a ship that takes you to the bottom of the world. That is why these trips are worth saving for. However, it is also why so much money is wasted on them, because most people pay the sticker price for every single line.
So this guide treats each trip like a lot at an auction. First comes the sticker price, which is what a Civilian pays with cash at peak dates. Then comes the Operator price, which is what the same trip costs after three moves: Optimize, Convert, Redeem. Our five ultra luxury travel destinations for 2026 are Chilean Patagonia, the Maldives, Bhutan, a Botswana safari and Antarctica. In four of the five, a trip with a sticker price of $20,000 to $24,400 comes down to about $9,000 to $11,300 in cash, with the upgrade included.
TL;DR: ultra luxury travel destinations for 2026
- Five trips are worth a $10,000+ budget in late 2026 and 2027: Chilean Patagonia, the Maldives, Bhutan, the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and an Antarctica expedition.
- At sticker price, each costs about $20,000 to $26,000 per person for 9 to 12 nights, flights included. Booked like an Operator, they cost about $9,050 to $15,360 in cash, plus 140,000 to 260,000 points.
- In other words, you pay between 42% and 59% of the sticker price, and every Operator version adds one upgrade, such as a glacier hike, a sandbank dinner or a helicopter over the Delta.
- The biggest savings come from three places: points for the long-haul business-class seat, hotel points for the most expensive nights, and the shoulder or green season for everything else.
- Antarctica is the hardest lot to discount, because points cannot pay for the ship. Even so, an Operator still keeps about $10,600.

What makes the ultra luxury travel destinations of 2026 different?
A $5,000 trip buys comfort. A $20,000 trip buys things that cannot be scaled up for a crowd. If your budget is closer to $5,000 to $10,000 per person, our best destinations for $5,000 to $10,000 trips will serve you better. Above that line, though, three things change.
Access
Some places only work at the top end. For example, the best Okavango camps can only be reached by light aircraft, and only a small expedition ship lands you on the Antarctic Peninsula.
Space
At this level, you are often one of a handful of guests. A Delta camp may hold a dozen people in a private concession, and a Bhutan lodge may have fewer than ten suites.
The best guides
Finally, the price buys time with the people who know the place best: a tracker who reads the bush, an expedition team of scientists, a guide who grew up in the valley.
None of that requires paying the sticker price. Besides, the parts that make up most of the bill, such as the flight and the city hotel nights, are exactly the parts points can cover. Every price below is per person, sharing a double room or cabin, with a round-trip flight from a major US hub.
How does Optimize, Convert, Redeem cut a $20,000 trip in half?
Optimize → Convert → Redeem
- Optimize. First, set up the trip before you spend a single point: the right month, the right booking channel and the right mix of rooms. Above all, aim your everyday spending at one transferable currency. This is the first stage of the three-stage system behind luxury travel on a budget.
- Convert. Next, move points into the airline that prices your long-haul business-class seat best, and only once you have found the seat. Our guide to transferable points vs airline miles explains why this order matters.
- Redeem. Then spend hotel points on the nights with the highest cash rate, such as an overwater villa or a city hotel before the expedition starts. Finally, put part of the cash you saved into one upgrade that makes the trip.
To choose the lot, run each one through the Travel Decision Stack. Experience: name the moment the trip is for. Real Cost: compare the sticker price with the Operator price. Timing: pick the shoulder or green season; our month-by-month 2026 travel calendar shows what peaks when. Execution: book the scarce parts first, and the Goldilocks Booking Forecaster tells you whether to book flights and hotels now, wait or keep watching.
Torres del Paine and Santiago, Chilean Patagonia
First up, Patagonia is the gentlest entry to this tier and the closest to the “$20,000 trip for $10,000” promise. Its best lodges are all-inclusive, so the price covers every guided hike, ride and boat trip, and the Operator saves mostly on the flight and the season.
The experience in specific terms
Begin with two nights in Santiago, with a private day in the vineyards of the Casablanca or Maipo valleys. Then fly south to Puerto Natales and drive into Torres del Paine for seven nights at an all-inclusive lodge facing the mountains. Each day, the lodge guides choose a route to suit the weather: the hike to the base of the three granite towers, the turquoise lakes of Pehoé and Nordenskjöld, a horse ride with gauchos across an estancia, and a boat to the face of Grey Glacier. Evenings mean Chilean wine, lamb from the grill and a sky so dark you see the Milky Way. Before you go, the Local Language Helper gives you the Spanish for the estancias and the drive south.
Entry reality. US citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in Chile. Park entry tickets for Torres del Paine are sold online through the official park pass site, and many lodges arrange them for you.
Real cost range
At sticker price, budget about $20,000 per person for nine nights, flights included. Booked like an Operator, about $10,640 in cash plus 140,000 points, and that includes a private ice hike on Grey Glacier. The biggest lever is the flight: business class to Santiago costs about $5,000 in cash, or about $150 in taxes on points. Then the season does the rest, because the same lodge costs about a third less in March than in January.
Lot 01 · Chilean Patagonia
Sticker price$20,000
Operator price$10,640 + 140,000 points
| Per person, sharing | Sticker | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| Convert Business class to Santiago, round trip cash vs points | $5,000 | $150 |
| Redeem 2 nights in Santiago cash vs hotel points | $800 | $40 |
| Optimize 7 nights, all-inclusive lodge in Torres del Paine January vs March | $12,600 | $8,400 |
| Flights to Puerto Natales and transfers | $700 | $700 |
| Tips, wine and extras | $900 | $900 |
| Upgrade Private ice hike on Grey Glacier | — | $450 |
You pay 53% of the sticker price in cash, and the Operator version includes a private ice hike on Grey Glacier.
Timing verdict: March to mid-April, or November
The season runs from about October to April. December to February is the peak, with the longest days, the highest prices and the strongest winds. In contrast, March and early April 2027 bring autumn color to the beech forests, calmer days and lower lodge rates. Likewise, November 2026 is spring, with fresh snow on the peaks and few people on the trails. Most lodges close from about May to September.
Operator tip
Plan one spare day for the wind. Patagonian gusts can close a trail or cancel a boat with little warning, so ask the lodge to schedule your must-do hike, usually the base of the towers, early in the stay. Because everything is included, a weather day costs nothing extra, and you still get your big hike if the first try is blown out.
Baa Atoll and an overwater villa, the Maldives
Next, the Maldives is the lot with the biggest discount, because both of its expensive lines can be paid with points. The business-class seat and the overwater villa make up more than half of the sticker price, and an Operator covers both.
The experience in specific terms
Fly to Malé through a Gulf hub, then take a seaplane over the atolls to your first resort. Spend five nights in an overwater villa with steps down into the lagoon, a private deck and reef fish under the glass floor. Then move to a beach villa at a second resort for five more nights, with a private dinner on a sandbank at sunset and, from June to November, a boat trip to swim with manta rays in the Baa Atoll. Your connection may leave you hours in Doha or Dubai, so the Layover Maximizer shows whether it is worth leaving the airport. And before you plan the bar bill, the Wobbly Pop Index shows how much a drink really costs at a resort.
Entry reality. Visitors of every nationality get a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival. You also need to complete the online IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours before you land, and you need a confirmed resort or hotel booking.
Real cost range
At sticker price, budget about $21,400 per person for 10 nights, flights included. Booked like an Operator, about $9,050 in cash plus 260,000 points, including the sandbank dinner and the manta trip. The biggest lever is the flight, at about $7,200 in cash for business class, followed closely by the room: five overwater nights at a top resort cost about $5,250 per person in cash, or hotel points plus about $200 in fees.
Lot 02 · The Maldives

| Convert Business class via the Gulf, round trip cash vs points | $7,200 | $350 |
| Redeem 5 overwater nights at the top resort cash vs hotel points | $5,250 | $200 |
| Optimize 5 beach-villa nights peak vs shoulder | $5,250 | $4,500 |
| Seaplane transfers | $900 | $900 |
| Optimize Food and drinks half board booked ahead | $2,200 | $1,600 |
| Spa, dives and excursions | $600 | $600 |
| Upgrade Private sandbank dinner and manta trip | — | $900 |
You pay 42% of the sticker price in cash, and the Operator version includes a private sandbank dinner and a manta trip.
Timing verdict: late April to early May, or November
The dry northeast monsoon runs from about December to April, and Christmas, February and Easter are the most expensive weeks of the year. On the other hand, the southwest monsoon from May to October brings more rain, but also lower rates and the manta season. So the sweet spots are the edges: late April to early May 2027, before the rains settle in, and November 2026, when the dry season starts before the Christmas peak.
Operator tip
Land in Malé by early afternoon. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a late arrival means a night near the airport, or a long and costly speedboat ride. Choose the flight that lands earliest, even if it costs a few more points, and you sleep over the lagoon on the first night instead of in a transit hotel.
Every lot on this list starts with the Convert step. The Syndicate shows Operators which program to move points to, and when the seats open.

Paro, Punakha and the Himalaya, Bhutan
Bhutan is the rarest lot here. The kingdom charges every visitor a nightly fee to keep tourism small, so you share its monasteries, valleys and festivals with far fewer people than anywhere else in the Himalaya.
The experience in specific terms
Fly from Bangkok into Paro, one of the most dramatic airport approaches in the world, between forested ridges. Then travel the country on a lodge circuit: Thimphu for its weekend market and the giant Buddha Dordenma, the Dochula pass with its 108 stupas and views of the snow peaks, and the Punakha Dzong where two rivers meet. Next, cross into the Phobjikha valley, where black-necked cranes spend the winter. Finally, end in Paro with a dawn hike to Tiger’s Nest, the monastery that clings to a cliff 3,000 feet above the valley, and a traditional hot-stone bath in a farmhouse. The Trip Day Optimizer builds the days around dzong opening hours and festival dates.
Entry reality. Every visitor pays a Sustainable Development Fee of $100 per person per night, a rate confirmed through August 31, 2027, plus a one-off $40 visa. Most travelers book through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or their lodge, which arranges the visa, the fee and a guide.
Real cost range
At sticker price, budget about $21,800 per person for 10 nights, flights included. Booked like an Operator, about $10,040 in cash plus 180,000 points, including the private dawn hike and the hot-stone bath. The fee is the same for everyone, so the levers are the business-class seat to Bangkok, worth about $6,400, and the season: luxury lodges cost far less in December than during the October festivals.
Lot 03 · Bhutan

| Convert Business class to Bangkok, round trip cash vs points | $6,400 | $250 |
| Redeem 2 nights in Bangkok cash vs hotel points | $800 | $40 |
| Flights from Bangkok to Paro | $900 | $900 |
| Optimize 8 nights in luxury lodges October vs December | $12,000 | $6,800 |
| Sustainable Development Fee, 8 nights | $800 | $800 |
| Guide, driver and visa | $900 | $900 |
| Upgrade Dawn hike to Tiger’s Nest and a hot-stone bath | — | $350 |
You pay 46% of the sticker price in cash, and the Operator version includes a private dawn hike to Tiger’s Nest and a hot-stone bath.
Timing verdict: late November to December, or March to April
October is the peak, with clear mountain views and the big Thimphu festival, so rooms sell out and prices climb. Instead, late November and December 2026 keep the clear skies, add the cranes in Phobjikha and bring lower lodge rates, although nights are cold. Similarly, March and April 2027 bring rhododendrons in bloom and the spring festival in Paro. However, June to August is the monsoon, with clouds over the peaks.
Operator tip
Take the morning flights in and out. The fee is charged per night, and flights into Paro are often scheduled for the morning, when the weather is calmest. So a morning arrival and a morning departure give you an extra half day on each end, without adding a single night of fees.
The Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls, Botswana
Botswana is Africa’s most exclusive safari, by design. The country keeps visitor numbers low and camps small, so you watch lions and elephants with only a few other vehicles, and sometimes none at all. That model makes the sticker price high, but it also makes the season the most powerful lever on this list.
The experience in specific terms
Fly to Johannesburg, then on to Maun, and take a light aircraft into the Delta. Spend seven nights across two or three fly-in camps: gliding through the channels in a mokoro dugout canoe, tracking wild dogs and leopards on game drives, and walking the islands with an armed guide. Then fly to Victoria Falls for two nights, with a sunset cruise on the Zambezi above the falls. Camp quality and guiding vary a lot, so paste reviews of each camp and operator into Review Genie before you pay a deposit.
Entry reality. US citizens do not need a visa for Botswana for stays of up to 90 days. Check the visa rules for whichever side of Victoria Falls you stay on, Zimbabwe or Zambia, and ask your doctor about malaria prevention well before you travel.
Real cost range
At sticker price, budget about $24,400 per person for 10 nights, flights included. Booked like an Operator, about $11,280 in cash plus 180,000 points, and that includes a doors-off helicopter flight over the Delta. The biggest lever is the season: the same camps that charge about $1,900 per person per night in August often cost about half that in the green season. Business class on points comes a close second, because two long flights each way make a flat bed worth the most here.
Lot 04 · Botswana
Sticker price$24,400
Operator price$11,280 + 180,000 points
| Per person, sharing | Sticker | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| Convert Business class to Johannesburg, round trip cash vs points | $7,500 | $600 |
| Optimize 7 nights in fly-in Okavango camps August vs green season | $13,300 | $7,000 |
| Light aircraft between camps | $1,400 | $1,400 |
| Optimize 2 nights at Victoria Falls shoulder rate | $1,200 | $1,000 |
| Redeem Johannesburg hotel night on the way home cash vs hotel points | $400 | $30 |
| Park fees, visas and tips | $600 | $600 |
| Upgrade Doors-off helicopter flight over the Delta | — | $650 |
You pay 46% of the sticker price in cash, and the Operator version includes a doors-off helicopter flight over the Delta.
Timing verdict: November to March, or May to mid-June
The Delta floods arrive in the dry winter, so July to October is the peak, with water in the channels, animals around it and the highest prices. In contrast, the green season from November 2026 to March 2027 brings newborn animals, superb birding, afternoon storms and the lowest rates, although some camps close for part of it. Alternatively, May to mid-June 2027 is the shoulder, as the floodwater arrives and before the peak rates start.
Operator tip
Book the whole circuit with one camp company. When you stay at two or three camps run by the same operator, the light-aircraft hops between them are easier to arrange, and green-season offers such as “stay four nights, pay three” usually apply across all of them. As a result, the savings stack, and the guides at each camp hear about you before you land.
The Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica
Finally, Antarctica is the lot people call the trip of a lifetime, and the honest exception on this list. Points cannot pay for the ship, so the Operator saves less in percentage terms. Even so, the right month, the right ship and points for everything around the voyage still keep about $10,600 in your pocket.
The experience in specific terms
Fly to Buenos Aires for two nights of steak, tango and the old streets of San Telmo; the Walkable Route Designer links San Telmo, Recoleta and Palermo into one easy walk. Then take the charter flight to Ushuaia and board a small expedition ship. After two days across the Drake Passage, you spend about five days on the Antarctic Peninsula: zodiac landings among gentoo and chinstrap penguins, humpback whales in the bays, the ice cliffs of the Lemaire Channel and a step onto the continent itself at Paradise Harbor or Neko Harbor. On the best ships, scientists give talks every evening, and a small group paddles among the icebergs by sea kayak.
Entry reality. US citizens do not need a visa for Argentina for tourist stays. Expedition lines require travel insurance with medical evacuation cover, which often costs several hundred dollars on its own.
Real cost range
At sticker price, budget about $26,000 per person for 12 nights, flights included. Booked like an Operator, about $15,360 in cash plus 155,000 points, and that includes a place in the sea-kayaking group. The biggest lever is the voyage itself: the same ship costs far less in March than over Christmas, and the early-booking offers that lines release a year or more ahead can take off thousands more. Then points cover the business-class flight to Buenos Aires and the hotel nights there.
Lot 05 · Antarctica
Sticker price$26,000
Operator price$15,360 + 155,000 points
| Per person, sharing | Sticker | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| Convert Business class to Buenos Aires, round trip cash vs points | $5,500 | $250 |
| Redeem 2 nights in Buenos Aires cash vs hotel points | $900 | $60 |
| Optimize 10-night expedition voyage December suite vs March, booked early | $17,000 | $11,500 |
| Charter flight to Ushuaia | $1,200 | $1,200 |
| Polar gear, evacuation insurance and tips | $1,400 | $1,400 |
| Upgrade Sea-kayaking program | — | $950 |
You pay 59% of the sticker price in cash, and the Operator version includes a place in the sea-kayaking group.
Timing verdict: late February to March, or November
The season runs only from about November to March. December and January are the peak, with long days, penguin chicks and the highest prices. In contrast, late February and March 2027 bring the most whales, fledging chicks and lower fares. Similarly, November 2026 has pristine snow and penguin courtship at early-season rates. Book a year or more ahead for the best cabins, or watch for last-minute offers if your dates are flexible.
Operator tip
Choose the ship by its passenger count, not the size of the suite. Under the tour-operator guidelines for Antarctica, no more than 100 people can be ashore at one site at a time, and ships with more than 500 passengers cannot land guests at all. So a ship with under 200 guests gets you onto the ice more often and for longer, and that matters far more than a bigger cabin.

How do you book a $10,000+ trip like an Operator?
- Pick the lot a year out. These trips sell out first at the best rates, so choose the destination and month 9 to 14 months ahead. If you have time to build points, also check our 12 award sweet spots for where they stretch furthest.
- Lock the scarce part first. Next, reserve the thing that cannot be replaced: the expedition cabin, the Delta camps, the Bhutan lodges or the overwater villa. Then build the flights around it.
- Convert for the seat. Once the dates are set, find saver business-class space and only then transfer points. Elite status can help on the paid parts of the trip, and our guide to elite status explained shows when it is worth chasing.
- Redeem for the priciest nights. After that, use hotel points on the nights with the highest cash rate. Our guide to the best hotel loyalty program shows which one suits your trips, and luxury without luxury prices shows where five-star rooms cost the least in cash.
- Spend the saving on one upgrade. Finally, put part of the cash you kept into the moment the trip is for, and run the plan through the Regret-Free Trip Audit before you pay.

What are the best ultra luxury travel destinations for 2026?
The best ultra luxury travel destinations for 2026 are Chilean Patagonia, the Maldives, Bhutan, the Okavango Delta in Botswana and the Antarctic Peninsula. Each has a sticker price of about $20,000 to $26,000 per person with business-class flights, and each costs about $9,050 to $15,360 in cash when booked like an Operator with points.
How do you get a $20,000 trip for $10,000?
Use three moves. First, optimize the trip by choosing the shoulder or green season and booking the scarce parts early. Then convert transferable points into a business-class seat, the biggest single line. Finally, redeem hotel points for the most expensive nights. Together, these cut Patagonia, the Maldives, Bhutan and Botswana to between 42% and 53% of their sticker price.
How much is the Bhutan tourist fee in 2026?
The Sustainable Development Fee is $100 per person per night, a rate confirmed through August 31, 2027, plus a one-off $40 visa fee. For an eight-night trip, that adds $800 per person, and it is the same whatever hotel you choose.
How much does a luxury safari in Botswana cost?
At peak season, a 10-night Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls trip with business-class flights costs about $24,400 per person. In the green season, from November to March, with flights on points, the same camps bring it to about $11,280 in cash plus 180,000 points.
How much does a luxury Antarctica cruise cost?
A 10-night voyage on a small expedition ship costs about $17,000 per person in a balcony suite over Christmas, and about $11,500 in March when booked early. With flights, Buenos Aires, gear and insurance, budget about $26,000 at sticker price, or about $15,360 in cash plus 155,000 points as an Operator.
When is the cheapest time to visit the Maldives?
The southwest monsoon, from about May to October, brings the lowest resort rates, along with more rain and the manta ray season. For the best balance of weather and price, aim for late April to early May or November, and avoid Christmas, February and Easter.
In the end, the sticker price is only the opening bid. Every one of these ultra luxury travel destinations for 2026 rewards the traveler who sets up the trip, converts for the seat and redeems for the room, so pick your lot, raise your paddle and win it for half.
