Most people pick a place first and a month second. Then they find out they chose the rainy season, the school-holiday week or the one festival that triples hotel prices. Operators do it the other way round. They start with the month they can travel, then go where that month is at its best and its prices are not yet at their peak. In fact, the same trip can cost 30% to 40% less just by moving it a few weeks.
So this guide to the best time to travel by month in 2026 gives every month three picks. Each one has a typical cost, a price signal (low, shoulder or peak) and the reason it shines that month. Also, every month has a “skip” week and a postcard Operator tip. If you are planning now, the months from November 2026 to October 2027 all apply, and the dates for 2027 holidays are already in.
TL;DR: the best time to travel by month in 2026
- Cheapest months to fly: mid-January to early February, September after Labor Day, and the first two weeks of December. These are the dead weeks between holidays.
- Best months for Europe: May and September. You get warm weather and long days, but not the July and August prices or crowds.
- Best months for long-haul nature: July to September for the Serengeti and Botswana, October for Nepal, and March or November for Patagonia.
- Japan has two perfect windows: late March to early April for cherry blossoms, and mid to late November for the autumn leaves.
- Typical cost for 7 nights per person, with an economy flight from the US: about $1,100 for Mexico City in February to $7,500 for a Serengeti safari in July.

How do you choose the best time to travel by month in 2026?
The Timing Optimization Framework
- Find the month’s sweet spot. First, every place has a window where the weather is good but the crowds have not arrived, or have just left. That window is what our Timing Optimization Framework is built on, and it is usually a shoulder season.
- Read the price signal. Next, check whether the month is low, shoulder or peak for that place. Peak is fine when the experience only happens then, such as the cherry blossoms or the migration. Otherwise, the shoulder gives you most of the trip for much less.
- Avoid the spike weeks. Then cross off the holiday weeks: US school breaks, Easter, Golden Week in Japan and China, and local festivals. One week either side often halves the hotel price.
- Book on the right clock. Finally, book flights about two to four months ahead for most trips, and six to twelve months ahead for peak events and safari camps.
After that, run your pick through the Travel Decision Stack. Experience: what does this month give you that another month cannot? Real Cost: is it low, shoulder or peak, and what does a week cost? Timing: which week of the month is best, and which one should you skip? Execution: what must be booked first? For that last step, the Goldilocks Booking Forecaster tells you whether to book your flights and hotel now, wait or keep watching. If you only have spring or fall to work with, our guide to the 20 best shoulder season destinations for 2026 goes deeper on those months.
Best places to travel in January
January is the cheapest month of the year to fly once the New Year rush is over. However, it is also the heart of the dry season in Central America and the Caribbean coast of South America, so the warm places fill up. The trick is to fly after January 6.
- Weather sweet spot
- Dry season in Central America and Colombia
- Price signal
- Low for flights after Jan 6, peak for beach hotels
- Book flights by
- October
Guanacaste and Arenal, Costa Rica
Peak $2,000–$3,200 for 7 nights
Dry, sunny beaches on the Pacific side, then the volcano, hot springs and hanging bridges at Arenal. In addition, January is turtle and whale season on parts of the coast, and the roads are at their best.
Cartagena, Colombia
Peak $1,400–$2,200 for 7 nights
The walled old town is at its breeziest and driest, with the Rosario Islands a boat ride away. Even at peak, it is one of the cheapest warm escapes from the US, as our guide to trips under $2,500 shows.
Tokyo and the snow country, Japan
Low $2,400–$3,800 for 7 nights
After the New Year holiday, Tokyo hotels drop to some of their lowest rates. Then take the train to Nagano for the snow monkeys and a night in a hot-spring inn, with snow on the roofs outside.
Skip: December 20 to January 4 anywhere warm. The Caribbean and Costa Rica charge their highest rates of the year over the holidays.
Operator tip
Book the flight for the second or third week of January. These are the “dead weeks” after the holidays, when airlines cut fares to fill seats. Then build the hotel nights around that date, not the other way round. For example, the same Costa Rica week can cost several hundred dollars less per person in airfare alone just by leaving on January 12 instead of January 2.
Best places to travel in February
February is short, cold at home and full of deals outside the holiday weekends. Meanwhile, Southeast Asia is in its cool dry season and the Southern Hemisphere is in late summer. Also, Chinese New Year falls on February 6, 2027, which moves prices across Asia that week.
- Weather sweet spot
- Cool and dry in Thailand, late summer in New Zealand
- Price signal
- Shoulder, except Presidents’ Day weekend
- Book flights by
- November
Chiang Mai and Bangkok, Thailand
Peak $1,800–$2,900 for 7 nights
Clear skies, cool mornings in the northern hills and street food on every corner. Once you land, the cost per day is low, which is why it also tops our list of the best places for digital nomads.
Mexico City, Mexico
Shoulder $1,100–$1,900 for 7 nights
Dry, sunny days, and the first purple jacarandas by late February. It is also a short, cheap flight and one of the world’s great food cities, which is why it leads our guide to incredible food and walkable cities.
Queenstown and Milford Sound, New Zealand
Peak $3,600–$5,400 for 7 nights
Late summer brings the warmest lake water, long evenings and the most settled weather for the fjords. Moreover, February is after the local school holidays, so the trails are quieter than in January.
Skip: Presidents’ Day weekend, February 13 to 15, 2027, at US ski resorts, and the Chinese New Year week for flights within Asia.
Operator tip
If you fly to Asia, check the Chinese New Year week before you book. Flights within the region and hotels in places like Singapore and Hong Kong rise sharply around February 6, 2027, while Bangkok’s Chinatown is at its most festive. So either plan around the festival on purpose, or arrive a week later and pay less for the same trip.
Best places to travel in March
March is a turning point. Spring arrives in Japan and North Africa, while autumn begins in Patagonia. In contrast, US spring break and Holy Week push prices up in the beach towns, so March rewards the traveler who goes somewhere other than the beach.
- Weather sweet spot
- Spring in Japan and Morocco, autumn in Patagonia
- Price signal
- Shoulder, but peak for cherry blossom week
- Book flights by
- December
Tokyo and Kyoto in cherry blossom season, Japan
Peak $3,000–$4,600 for 7 nights
The blossoms usually open in Tokyo and Kyoto in the last week of March and peak into early April. It is the most beautiful week of the year in Japan, and our guide for first-time solo travelers explains why Japan is so easy to do alone.
Torres del Paine, Chilean Patagonia
Shoulder $3,400–$5,000 for 7 nights
Autumn turns the beech forests red and gold, the wind eases and lodge rates fall about a third from January. For more trips like it, see our guide to big nature adventure.
Marrakech and the Sahara, Morocco
Shoulder $1,700–$2,700 for 7 nights
Warm days, cool desert nights and snow still on the Atlas peaks. Ramadan runs to about March 9 in 2027, so go from mid-March, when the souks and restaurants are back to full hours. Before you go, the Local Language Helper gives you the French and Darija phrases for the medina.
Skip: mid-March spring break in Cancún and Florida, and Holy Week, March 21 to 28, 2027, in Spain and Latin America, when hotels sell out at top rates.
Operator tip
The cherry blossom date moves by a week or more from year to year. So book refundable hotel nights in both Tokyo and Kyoto, then decide the order once the official bloom forecasts come out in early spring. Go to whichever city blooms first, then follow the blossoms to the other. A rigid booking is how people end up seeing bare branches.
Best places to travel in April
April is Europe’s first great month. The days are long, the flowers are out and the summer prices have not started yet. Also, Easter is early in 2027, on March 28, so most of April falls after the holiday rush.
- Weather sweet spot
- Spring in Europe and the Middle East
- Price signal
- Shoulder after Easter week
- Book flights by
- January
Lisbon and Porto, Portugal
Shoulder $1,700–$2,700 for 7 nights
Sunny, warm and green, with the hills of Lisbon and the port lodges of Porto three hours apart by train. The Walkable Route Designer maps a day on foot through the steep old quarters without the worst climbs.
Petra and Wadi Rum, Jordan
Shoulder $2,200–$3,400 for 7 nights
Spring is cool enough to walk Petra’s trails all day and sleep under the stars in the desert. It is one of the moments in our guide to a “wow” experience that will be remembered.
Amsterdam and the tulip fields, Netherlands
Peak $2,000–$3,100 for 7 nights
The Keukenhof gardens usually open from late March to mid-May, and the fields around them peak in mid-April. Rent a bike and ride through the stripes of color, then spend the evenings by the canals.
Skip: Japan from April 29 to May 5, when Golden Week sends the whole country on holiday and trains and hotels fill.
Operator tip
Use the gap between Easter and the May holidays. With Easter on March 28, 2027, the first three weeks of April are quiet in most of Europe, but the weather is already warm. As a result, flights and hotels in Lisbon or Seville cost far less than they will in June, and the lines at the big sights are short.

Best places to travel in May
May is the best month for the Mediterranean. The sea starts to warm, the islands wake up for the season and prices are often a third lower than in July. In other words, you get summer without paying for it.
- Weather sweet spot
- Early summer in the Mediterranean
- Price signal
- Shoulder, except Memorial Day weekend
- Book flights by
- February
Milos and the Cyclades, Greece
Shoulder $2,000–$3,000 for 7 nights
White villages, sea caves and quiet beaches before the summer ferries fill. Late May is warm enough to swim, and Milos is one of our picks for a romantic escape.
Palermo, Taormina and Syracuse, Sicily
Shoulder $2,100–$3,200 for 7 nights
Street markets, Greek temples and Mount Etna, all in mild weather. It is one of the best values in Italy, as our guide to $2,500 to $5,000 trips shows.
Cappadocia, Türkiye
Shoulder $1,700–$2,600 for 7 nights
Calm spring mornings mean more balloon flights go up over the fairy chimneys. Then pair it with three nights in Istanbul before the summer heat sets in.
Skip: flying home on Memorial Day, May 31, 2027. Fly out the Tuesday before or back the Tuesday after.
Operator tip
Book the Cappadocia balloon flight for your first morning, not your last. Flights are often cancelled for wind, and the operator will usually move you to the next day. With the flight early in the stay, a cancellation just means another try. With it on your last morning, it means no flight at all.
Best places to travel in June
June is when the north is at its best and the Andes turn dry. School is out, so prices rise through the month. Even so, early June is still shoulder in many places, and the long days give you more trip for the same money.
- Weather sweet spot
- Midnight sun in the north, dry season in the Andes
- Price signal
- Peak from mid-June
- Book flights by
- March
Reykjavík and the South Coast, Iceland
Peak $2,800–$4,200 for 7 nights
Almost 24 hours of daylight means waterfalls at midnight and no rush to get anywhere. Puffins nest on the cliffs from about May to August.
Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, Peru
Peak $2,400–$3,600 for 7 nights
The dry season brings clear mornings over the ruins, and Cusco celebrates Inti Raymi, the festival of the sun, on June 24. Our guide to $5,000 to $10,000 trips shows the upgraded version.
Montreal and Quebec City, Canada
Shoulder $1,300–$2,200 for 7 nights
Terraces open, the summer festivals begin and it feels like Europe a short flight away. That is why it leads our list for minimal logistics and maximum reward.
Skip: the last week of June in southern Europe, when school holidays start and beach hotel prices jump.
Operator tip
Book Machu Picchu before you book the flight. Entry tickets are timed and limited for each route through the site, and the June dates sell out months ahead. So lock the ticket and the train to Aguas Calientes first, then build the flights and the Cusco nights around that one date.
Best places to travel in July
July is peak almost everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere. So the smart move is to go where July is the reason to go, not where it is just hot and crowded. That means the migration in East Africa, the cool green of Ireland and the wild summer of Alaska.
- Weather sweet spot
- Dry season in East Africa, cool summer in the north
- Price signal
- Peak
- Book flights by
- March
The northern Serengeti, Tanzania
Peak $4,800–$7,500 for 7 nights
The herds usually reach the Mara River from about July to October, and the crossings are the most dramatic wildlife scene on earth. Before you pay a deposit, paste a camp’s reviews into Review Genie for the red flags.
Dublin and Galway, Ireland
Peak $2,200–$3,300 for 7 nights
Long, mild evenings, the Galway arts festival and the cliffs of the west coast at their greenest. Unlike southern Europe, it is never too hot to walk all day.
Kenai Fjords and Denali, Alaska
Peak $2,600–$4,000 for 7 nights
Whales and glaciers by boat, bears at the salmon rivers and the best chance to see Denali’s peak. No passport needed, and the season is short, so July is the heart of it.
Skip: Rome, Athens and the Spanish south from mid-July to mid-August, when the heat and the crowds peak together.
Operator tip
For the river crossings, stay in the far north of the Serengeti, near the Mara River, and book at least two nights in the same camp. The herds move unpredictably, so one night is a gamble. Many camps in the north are mobile and follow the migration, which is why they fill a year ahead for July and August.
Best places to travel in August
August is the month to look south and north, away from the Mediterranean. Indonesia is in its dry season, the Galápagos are cool and full of marine life, and Scandinavia has its warmest days.
- Weather sweet spot
- Dry season in Indonesia, warm days in Scandinavia
- Price signal
- Peak, shoulder in the Galápagos
- Book flights by
- April
Ubud and the south coast, Bali
Peak $2,000–$3,200 for 7 nights
Dry, sunny days for the rice terraces, temples and surf beaches. Five-star villas still cost a fraction of what they do in Europe, as our guide to luxury without luxury prices shows. The long flight connects in Asia, and the Layover Maximizer shows whether your stop is worth leaving the airport for.
The Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
Shoulder $4,500–$6,800 for 7 nights
The cool season brings rich water, sea lion pups and the best snorkeling with marine life, though the seas are rougher. Most foreign adults also pay a $200 national park entry fee on arrival.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Peak $2,300–$3,400 for 7 nights
Harbor swimming, bikes everywhere and light until late. Add a day at Legoland in Billund, and it is one of our top picks for family-friendly fun with kids.
Skip: Paris and Rome in mid-August, when many locals are away, some family restaurants close and the heat is at its worst.
Operator tip
In the Galápagos, compare a small-ship cruise with island-hopping from hotels before you choose. A cruise reaches the remote islands and sails at night, so you wake up somewhere new. Island-hopping, on the other hand, costs less and suits anyone who gets seasick, which matters in August, when the seas are at their roughest.
Best places to travel in September
September is the Operator’s favorite month. The sea is at its warmest, the summer crowds have gone home and fares to Europe drop after Labor Day, which falls on September 6 in 2027. At the same time, it is the height of the dry season in southern Africa.
- Weather sweet spot
- Warm sea in Europe, dry season in southern Africa
- Price signal
- Low for Europe flights after Labor Day
- Book flights by
- May
Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split, Croatia
Shoulder $2,100–$3,200 for 7 nights
Warm water, island ferries still running full schedules and room rates well below August. Moreover, the old towns are walkable again once the summer day-trippers thin out.
The Amalfi Coast, Italy
Shoulder $2,800–$4,300 for 7 nights
Lemon groves, cliffside dinners and boat days to Capri without the August crush on the coast road. For many couples, September is its sweetest month.
The Okavango Delta, Botswana
Peak $6,500–$11,000 for 7 nights
Late dry season draws the animals to the water, so game viewing is at its best of the year. Our guide to $10,000+ luxury trips shows how to book the top camps for about half the sticker price.
Skip: Munich in late September during Oktoberfest, unless the festival is the point. Hotel prices can triple.
Operator tip
Fly to Europe on the Tuesday or Wednesday after Labor Day. Fares fall as soon as the summer peak ends, but the sea stays warm for another month. Then plan the Dubrovnik old town for early morning, and check the city’s cruise calendar so you avoid the days when several big ships are in port at once.
Best places to travel in October
October is the month for color and clear mountain air. The leaves turn in New England, the Himalaya has its clearest skies after the monsoon, and Mexico gets ready for the Day of the Dead.
- Weather sweet spot
- Fall color in the US, clear skies in the Himalaya
- Price signal
- Peak for leaf season and trekking
- Book flights by
- June
Vermont and New Hampshire, New England
Peak $1,400–$2,400 for 7 nights
The leaves usually peak in early to mid-October in northern New England. Drive the back roads past covered bridges and farm stands, then push north to Quebec for a few days more.
Kathmandu and the Annapurna trails, Nepal
Peak $2,600–$3,800 for 7 nights
After the monsoon, the air is clear and the snow peaks stand out sharp. In fact, October and November are the best trekking months of the year, so the teahouses are busy.
Oaxaca, Mexico
Shoulder $1,200–$2,100 for 7 nights
The rains end, the markets fill with marigolds and the Day of the Dead runs from October 31 to November 2. It is the star of our guide to the best trips under $2,500.
Skip: China’s Golden Week, October 1 to 7, for travel in China and on busy routes across East Asia.
Operator tip
For Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, book your room by early summer and arrive on October 28 or 29. Hotels in the center sell out months ahead, and the days before the main nights are when families build their altars and the city is at its most open to visitors. So you see the build-up, not just the crowds.
Best places to travel in November
November is a quiet sweet spot between the fall peak and the holidays. Japan has its second great season, South Africa moves into spring and northern Vietnam turns cool and dry. Above all, everything outside Thanksgiving week is good value.
- Weather sweet spot
- Autumn in Japan, spring in South Africa
- Price signal
- Shoulder, except Thanksgiving week
- Book flights by
- August
Kyoto and Tokyo in autumn, Japan
Peak $2,800–$4,300 for 7 nights
The maples around Kyoto’s temples usually turn red in mid to late November, with clear, crisp days. The Trip Day Optimizer builds each day around opening hours and the quietest times at the famous temples.
Cape Town and the Winelands, South Africa
Shoulder $2,200–$3,400 for 7 nights
Spring brings sunshine, wildflowers and wine estates before the December peak. In addition, the rand stretches a five-star budget a long way, from wine-estate lunches to a suite with a view of Table Mountain.
Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Shoulder $1,700–$2,700 for 7 nights
The north turns cool and mostly dry, perfect for the Old Quarter on foot and a night on the bay. Central Vietnam, by contrast, is still in its flood season, so start in the north this month.
Skip: flying within the US over Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026. The Sunday after is one of the busiest travel days of the year.
Operator tip
Use Thanksgiving week to go abroad instead of home. While US airports are packed, the week is quiet in Japan, Cape Town and Europe. If you do fly home, fly on Thanksgiving Day itself and come back on the Tuesday, our Thanksgiving travel 2026 guide has the full plan.
Best places to travel in December
December has two halves. The first two weeks are one of the best-value windows of the year, with Christmas markets open and the Caribbean dry season beginning. Then, from about December 18, prices climb to their highest point of the year.
- Weather sweet spot
- Dry season starts in the Caribbean, snow in the Arctic
- Price signal
- Low until mid-month, then peak
- Book flights by
- September
Vienna and Budapest, Christmas markets
Shoulder $1,600–$2,600 for 7 nights
Mulled wine, lights and thermal baths, two and a half hours apart by train. Before you go, the Wobbly Pop Index shows how much further your money goes in Budapest than in Vienna.
Aruba
Shoulder $2,000–$3,200 for 7 nights
Sunny and dry, south of the main hurricane belt, with calm water on the west coast. Go in early December, before the holiday rates, for the deep rest and warmth most people want from a winter trip.
Finnish Lapland
Peak $2,800–$4,300 for 7 nights
Snow, glass-roofed cabins and long nights for the northern lights, which our guide to seeing the northern lights this winter covers in full. Early December is cheaper than Christmas week.
Skip: December 20 to January 3 in the Caribbean and the Alps, unless you booked a year out.
Operator tip
Aim for the first two weeks of December. The markets in Vienna open in mid-November, the Caribbean is already in its dry season and the holiday rates have not started. Also, December 1 to 15 is one of the cheapest windows to fly, so the same trip costs far less than it will one week before Christmas.
The best time to travel by month in 2026, compared
Here is the best time to travel by month in 2026 side by side. Costs are for 7 nights per person, sharing, with a round-trip economy flight from a major US hub, a mid-range hotel, food and activities. Tap a month above and its row lights up here too. Our 2026 travel timing research report has the full data behind these picks.
| Month | Top pick | Also great | Price signal | 7 nights from | Book flights by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| November | Japan (autumn leaves) | Cape Town; Hanoi | Shoulder | $1,700 | August |
| December | Vienna and Budapest | Aruba; Lapland | Low (first half) | $1,600 | September |
Pick the month you have, then go where that month is at its best. That one switch is the whole Timing layer.
How do you plan a year of travel like an Operator?
- Start with your months, not your places. First, mark the weeks you can actually travel in 2027, then match each one to the picks above. The month decides the price far more than the place does.
- Book the scarce part first. Next, reserve whatever cannot be replaced: the safari camp, the Machu Picchu ticket, the Day of the Dead hotel or the cherry blossom rooms. Then build the flights around it.
- Watch the fare, then pounce. After that, use the “book flights by” month as your deadline, and let the Goldilocks Booking Forecaster tell you whether today’s price is good or worth waiting on.
- Shift by one week. If a date lands on a holiday, move it seven days. Usually that alone cuts the hotel bill and clears the crowds, as our guide to deciding when to travel explains.
- Plan the next trip while on this one. Finally, once you are home, pick the next month and its destination straight away, so the booking clock starts early and you never pay peak by accident.

What is the best month to visit Europe?
